The real question is why is my boss not tipping me.

233

u/MrLavenderValentino 8h ago

I get an annual bonus, I guess thats a tip.

In that case, last year I got <1% tip. Pretty fuckin insulting

55

u/Sawses 7h ago

I got a $200 bonus my first year working that worked out to about $120 after taxes. I was like dude, thanks I guess but I'm not exactly going to be working very hard to get that bonus lol.

Contrast with my current place. I got $5,000 for Christmas last year, and will likely get that again this year. That's a nice vacation or a big chunk of a house down payment.

u/HeyItsMeAgainBye 3h ago

This is how businesses should run. Bonuses keep employees happy and happy employees want to keep a business running

I’ve been downvoted to oblivion for saying this before too lol. Tattoo artists, barbers, stylists, etc literally set their own rates. They have full control over what they charge you. They can even turn down certain requests. If they think their work is worth more than they charge…..they should just increase the price?? Like, I get accepting tips when they’re offered, but to expect it when you’re the one setting the price is ridiculous.

I get my hair done at a tip-free salon, it’s amazing! All the stylists set their own prices and they explicitly say no tipping

Edit: For context I’m in the USA.

In the UK I don't know a single person who's ever tipped their tattoo artists. This seems like a US culture thing.

I agree. So many service providers forget that tips are for going above and beyond. If I come in and you do what I’m already paying you to do and nothing extra, what exactly would I be tipping for? There’s nothing for me to be extra gracious for so there’s no reason for me to add gratuity.

51

u/moreofajordan 6h ago

If you set your own rate, I absolutely will not tip. Have been going to my esthetician for 5 or 6 years and she has her own shop. At first I tipped for service, but after the first time she told me, “If I needed to make that, I’d charge that.”

59

u/Weak-Hamster- 7h ago

I think they view tips as "good job" even if its as small as extra two dollars

115

u/Queasy_Local_7199 7h ago

I’m paying you the price you quoted to do a good job

54

u/RabbitStewAndStout 7h ago

Right? I've never heard of tipping your plumber or mechanic, so why would I be tipping another person setting their own rates?

45

u/jaxmikhov 6h ago

I recently had a plumbers payment app ask for a tip. Default was 20% on a $4500 job. Fuck no. I agreed to pay for a service, I got the service as agreed, you only get the price we agreed on.

19

u/cykoTom3 6h ago

Holy fuck can you imagine? No man, i get quotes because we're already pushing my budget. Unless you do something out of your way, no. And unless that out of your way thing is purchasing and installing a toilet or something there's no way I'm tipping 900

I’m not tipping for a tattoo, it’s an agreed upon price that they set.

309

u/StretchLoud8844 7h ago

Got into an argument about this with a friend a few years back, I don't have any tattoos and this concept floored me.

It's literally a set, defined, unmoving price point that they can choose. "But I want to pay them fairly"

Ok, part of being a working adult is valuing your time and work accurately, therefore you charge appropriately. If you charge 200$ for a tattoo, and 100$ for your time, just say it's 300$

Do not ask the person to pay 200$ in the hopes that they will tip you 100$.

39

u/ItsDanimal 6h ago

My wife worked as a server for a long time and she is adamant about tipping servers, our housekeeper, or anyone else she deems has a "struggle" job. But our landscaper, mail person, plumber garage truck drivers, get the payment they asked for.

My tattoo artist has explicitly told my wife and I not to tip them because they do precisely that.

22

u/FiddleThruTheFlowers 7h ago

All artists I've gone to have done the same. I've never had an artist balk at getting what they asked for, because that's the price that they decided is fair. All the comments about "my guy was offended at 20%" or whatever are bonkers to me.

23

u/Conformatrix 7h ago

I tell my clients that they don't have to tip because I set my own prices, I never want them to think it's obligatory. I make this very explicit.

I also tell them that I'm not gonna turn down free money if they feel like giving me some.

I dont care if its more expensive, food just is now, idc. Thats not the problem, the problem is that you make something optional, but actually its not optional. You choose to tip, but actually you cant choose to not tip. Thats the whole american freedom, its so backwards. Like there is more freedom in europe like that, if you want there is private health care if you want to pay, but also other options. Like, if you really want, you can tip in europe as well, but that would just be your generosity, not something expected. Just include the damn tips in your prices and sell shit at the actual “what you pay” price, not some honky “secret math problems” price.

→ More replies (6)

99

u/zcontium 8h ago

10% isn't bad, but here in the US you're kind of expected to tip 20%-25% on most things

97

u/nnnoooeee 8h ago

Which i still dont get. Standard used to be 15% and now the default os 20%.

I know everything is more expensive, but that should be accounted for with a %, versus a static number, no?

(not asking you personally, just venting out loud)

68

u/RiparianTreeLobster 7h ago

In California they also add “service fees” and “cost of living fees” with the letters description being “to provide adequate pay and insurance for employees. This is not a tip, please tip your server” and that exists so management can scrape off an additional 15% that goes into an “employee fund” which just means they take it and pocket it.

Like how about you just pay your employees and then if I think they did a superb job I will give them a little extra

→ More replies (3)

43

u/RedneckScienceGeek 7h ago

I'm old enough to remember when standard was 10%, and 15% was reserved for exceptional service.

9

u/pisspeeleak 7h ago

I still do that. Minimum wage here is like $18/hr. It’s not like the states where you can pay them $3/hr. I refuse to tip a minimum of 18% like so many machines insist on

→ More replies (5)

32

u/zcontium 7h ago

I know you weren't asking me directly, but I genuinely believe its because of the corporate culture shift, trying to put more pressure on the customers to pay employees directly, thus having the employers pay less.

10-15% is a good tip. 25% feels like were fronting the employee wages on top of the service fees.

6

u/blackcray 7h ago

That's exactly what it is, most states still have the tipped wage set well below the federal minimum, and the companies operating them don't want to give that up.

16

u/StrictlySanDiego 7h ago

I tip 15% minus any added service fee. I don’t care anymore.

Man, this whole tipping thing is so crazy to.me, as a German.

I'm a bike mechanic and get paid very, very well for the work I do.

But I've now lost count of the amount of times that customers have tried to hand me a tip when I give them their bike back, that I would then tell them I didn't want because I get paid well.

I've now started taking the tips, but then saving all the money in my tool chest, and at the the end of every month, I donate it all to a local charity.

Fuck tipping culture.

184

u/Unambiguous-Doughnut 8h ago

Im not against tipping im against tipping not be optional or the worker starves. If a business runs on tips its code for we underpay our staff and make it your problem and you will be happy with it and pay for our employee.

Hell some businesses illegally pocket the tips... I hate the culture thats formed around it but a nice bonus for a job well done I consider to be acceptable and appreciative if people can afford it, if its forced then its a problem.

→ More replies (15)

47

u/I3adIVIonkey 8h ago

I mean it is a totally different thing if the impulse comes from the customer for good service, instead of expecting a tip no matter what.

How many customers tip out of every 10 and how much? I don't think we're talking 20% but more like 10-20€. On the other hand some bikers are crazy when it comes to their bike. So curious if you allow the question.

Tattooists, barbers, hairdresses, taxi drivers, food delivery people, baristas, breakfast or sandwich (but not other fast food)  restaurant workers, servers at "sit down" restaurants, tour guides, bartenders, and (deep sigh) "budtenders".

Tattooists and hair people are usually self employed and so use the culture of tipping to trick people into thinking their services are cheaper than they are. Everyone else just works in a shitty industry that takes advantage of workers.

47

u/Opening_Sun8018 8h ago

I don’t understand tipping bartenders unless they are mixing you a fancy drink with a bunch of requests. If they’re just filling up a mug with beer idk why that deserves extra money

19

u/JellyTigerr 7h ago

You just tip a dollar for the alcohol/soft drink mixes, 2 if you like them. Been a bartender for years and it's not totally expected but very appreciated. It also helps boost your morale when you've been working for 6 hours behind bar and have 2-3 hours of clean up ahead of you when the bar closes.

Now it is. It used to be restricted to people who have you customized attention like servers in restaurants, bellhops, valets, etc.; people who dealt with your body like hairdressers, nail tech, and waxers (and tattoo artists, probably; they also are giving you custom service); and sometimes service people for your home like housekeepers and landscapers. But now, people have put an electronic tip request for literally every transaction, like grabbing a muffin from a convenience store.

It’s really bizarre what is or isn’t part of tipping culture.

Hairdressers and tattoo artists, generally expect a tip, but it’s really stupid that they do because they set their own prices.

22

u/TruckDouglas 8h ago

It’s because they typically have to pay a portion of what they get as payment to the actual shop for “booth/chair rental” it’s pretty dumb, but on paper, the less you charge, the less you have to pay. So they set their price low and then the extra tip goes straight to them instead of the shop.

Every tattoo artist I know doesn't expect tips and has even said so on their pages. I'm sure they're out there, but in my experience it's not the norm. I think the breakdown here might be that some artists own the shop and some artists pay a booth rent or a percentage of the overall pay. So while some artists get to keep everything they charged you, some might have to split it with the shop owner. Probably best to discuss this stuff up front and know the whole situation. I could understand an artist splitting the gross pay or paying a booth rent hoping for a tip.

Ok, didn't realize tattooing was a tipping industry. Tipping is for industries that don't pay well. Tattoo artists get paid well. The good ones do anyway.

Do we have to tip our doctors, too? The people at the post office? Supermarket cashiers? McDonald's employees? Where does it end?

Wife signed up for an artists to charged her $700 a session…but never set a length of time for those sessions. The artist would complain about hand pain and call it short sometimes but still expect $700 plus tip after each session “because that’s what they agreed to”.

I explained to my wife she was getting ripped off but was too embarrassed to admit it. Eventually after a few sessions got cut short, she saw the light and pretended she ran out of money for the tattoo.

She ended up paying like $3000 for this medium/large sized tattoo. At least it looks good but i showed her other tattoos for a similar price and she really saw how much she was getting taken advantage of.

You have to tip tattoo artists? What the actual fuck is going on with this country?

291

u/Manaze85 8h ago

I never understood tipping for certain services and I typically don’t. Tipping a waiter? Sure, they make almost nothing hourly and the tip is for the service, the bill is for the actual product (food). But with tattooing and haircuts, the product IS the service, so I don’t know why the double dipping is expected.

32

u/CowboyBoats 7h ago

Tipping a waiter? Sure, they make almost nothing hourly and the tip is for the service, the bill is for the actual product (food).

Yes and the waiter can't just up and decide to charge 10x the price because that's a business decision for the restaurant. Tattoo artists not only can do this, but they do and prices vary from <$100/hour to >$1,000!

u/tdoger 7h ago

It’s crazy to me, a waiter is like one of the least deserving if a tip jobs out there. Yet it’s the one most engrained into our culture that you have to tip well.

“Oh you wrote down what i want to pay you for and then you brought it out to me. Here’s 25% of the cost of the meal for doing your job”

The cooks should be the ones getting tips more than anyone

36

u/brokemillionaire572 7h ago edited 3h ago

I also still will never understand why a waiter should make more simply because I ordered a steak and a nice beet instead of chicken fingers and a water.

The waiter might actually work harder for the chicken fingers and water.

Edit - a nice BEER

13

u/-P01135809- 7h ago

I mean how nice of a beet are we talking

Bonus points, tipping out a bartender is an easy way to get fast tracked if you're at a busy spot. Even something minor like a 3$ tip on a 7$ beer can get you faster service for an entire night out.

I just got back from Japan and South Korea, and my god it was so refreshing not having to tip. And don’t get me wrong, I always tip in the US. I want people to get livable wages, it just sucks that US culture hoists that responsibility onto the consumer

23

u/literalaretil 7h ago

Just to add, and I hate to say it, but I feel like the service overall was better too

For 0 tip.

Returning to the US was a shitty reverse culture shock to say the least

It's a bit like a "prisoner's dilemma" at this point, because the best outcome for everyone (including the owners of the restaurants) would be for tips to be illegal and to have the minimum wage apply to restaurants.

The reason I say it's like a prisoner's dilemma right now is that if a restaurant wanted to refuse tips, then they'd have to raise their prices. That means people considering going to that restaurant probably wouldn't know that tips are not accepted and that the high prices reflect that, so when they see $20 for a burger they might go "that's a ridiculous price" since in their mind they are comparing that price to competing restaurants that charge only $17 for a burger or whatever.

In order for something to change, the government has to change the rules of the game. It's not realistic that restaurants in isolation will change, because they have competitive disadvantages for trying to refuse tips.

It's why I haven't gotten my tattoo touched up. I was quoted for $500+ for my tattoo touch up and a 25% tip on top of that, just can't afford it.

Edit for Clarification: Apologies on the confusion, my mistake for using the word touch up. My tattoo is 20+ years old, and was looking for quotes to get it redone (touch up), but not a coverup.

63

u/melswift 7h ago

Tips went from "you did a really good job" to "I did the job" for some reason.

They told you your tip had to be 25%? I’ve seen a place before establish the tip percentage for themselves

50

At that point calling it a tip is disingenuous. It’s a service fee.

10

10

u/DiscoLibra 7h ago

No, its about a 7x5 inch tattoo on the back of my shoulder blade. I searched in our area and got three quotes and they were all about the same price. I just accepted my blue blob of a tattoo for now.

8

u/MindofShadow 7h ago

touch up or cover up?

Two totally different things. Cover ups are extra hard and that is why they are gnerally more expensive.

Is this American? I ask because in England I've never heard of giving extra money to a tattoo artist after agreeing on how much money I'm going to give them. Why wouldn't they just give the total cost upfront?

67

u/rippledippledapple 6h ago

I have several tattoos, and the last one i had was the most expensive and took the longest. chatting with the artist he said he doesnt give a shit if his customers tip. its nice when they do, but he charges what he wants for the work, if he wanted more, he would charge more.

the whole "youre supposed to tip" stuff is bullshit. but tipping is stupid as fuck in the US.

Tattoo artists already charge a lot for their services. In my city, a single session with a good tattoo artist costs around €500. Why should I tip on top of that?

→ More replies (5)

Tipping culture is dumb already. But it makes it even dumber if the person asking for the tip sets their own price, and thus could’ve simply asked for more money.

77

u/Dont-be-a-smurf 8h ago

It’s a one woman show, really.

It isn’t the most original movie in the world, but the main actress (pictured) does an amazing job being completely fucking unhinged.

Specifically her ability to go from normal to unhinged to normal to unhinged so effortlessly.

Also, there’s a lot of conventional makeup work to make some very “uncanny” looking shots that are impressive.

If you like horror it’s 100% worth watching.

43

u/i4got872 7h ago

Why do people keep saying this? The script is good and creates all this interesting subtext constantly. I think that’s the main reason it worked.

It's a great indie horror film with incredible acting, cinematography, lighting, sound design, makeup, dialogue, and everything. The people here poo-pooing it are either trying to seem too cool by not agreeing with the mainstream opinion, or they're just straight up pretentious. I love horror films, and Obsession is one of the best ones I've seen in a very long time. It successfully creeped me out multiple times and left me unnerved and horrified long after the credits rolled. The simplicity of the story is one of its strongest aspects, despite the people here whining about it.

People tip tattoo artists?I mean I tip things outside of restaurants, etc when I know the person is on hourly and does a good job, but largely tattoo artists work at their own rate and take all if not a % of the cost, they just pay a monthly chair cost, etc. so why on earth would I tip for that outside of so thrilled with the work I felt compelled to naturally.

54

u/EnTaroAdunExeggutor 7h ago

I tip because my guy criminally undercharges me. Man did half my arm and was like that'll be 150$. My fucking jaw hit the floor.

8

Mine isn’t that cheap, but she’s been consistently like half the price of the other local stores, so she absolutely gets a tip.

I’ve had tattoo artists state they expect a tip up front.

I’ve had others say don’t worry about it.

It all depends I guess. But I do agree, considering they set their own fees why not just be upfront about all that? Maybe for tax purposes? But I highly doubt most tattoo artists are experts at tax law.

35

u/Pointing-661 7h ago

Why the fuck would you be discussing a tip PRIOR to them putting something permanent on your body?

Man. For spite I’d tell them of course you’ll get a tip, then just not because all you’ve done is made me fear that if I say I don’t tip, you’ll fuck up my tattoo or do shitty work.

Fuck drama before a tattoo.

12

u/T-sigma 5h ago

The artists want a tip because so they don’t plan to report that income. Simple as that. They document they charged $100, taxes take $30 so their take home $70. If they charge $75 and you tip $25, they won’t report that part and take home will be $77.50.

~10% increased profitability and, in theory, only costs the government their taxes.

This assumes cash tip of course.

Tipping should be for the blue collar people who dont set their own price. The pizza delivery kid gets a tip if my pizza was ok and he was nice. The bike shop guy does not get a tip. The hairdresser who told me how much it would be doesnt get a tip. You told me how much it would be. But if youre a server just busting your ass you my friend are getting 20%. The only reason I dont like tipping those types of people is because it endorses the whole system and reinforces the strategy with the owners. "We dont gotta pay them a living wage they get tips" but im not gonna stop tipping and make those people suffer for it. The 20% tip options at a McDonald's when you've walked in and literally ordered it yourself too from a kiosk. Youre not getting a fucking tip. Im not rounding anything up and im not donating to charity for you.

When i got my first tattoo I was so confused when he said usually its an $80 tip on top of the price for the work. I asked why didnt he just say thats the price instead of asking for it on top. He just stared at me for a minute. Then said he didnt know but that made more sense.

I'm not anti tipping, I am not anti tattoo artist, but tipping tattoo artists is fucking stupid. You just set the price dummy, did you not make it how much you need to get paid for this? I also charge people for a service and I'm not expecting a tip. I quote the work for how much I charge and give them an invoice after.

27

u/PlayfulAd3225 8h ago

The tattoo artist should have named the price right at first so he doesn't expect extra coins from me

27

u/SnooSketches3382 8h ago

Tipping culture is out of control.

25

u/chimney_crow 8h ago

tbh yes I'm tired of factoring an additional 20% on top of whatever the tattoo artist tells me. I don't want to tip you, just tell me a price.

Semi-related, I went to a café the other day where you ordered at a kiosk. After keying in your order, you took a number and punched the number into the screen. When your food was ready, your number would flash on the lobby screen and you could pick up your order from a small window near the kitchen. No human interaction, no words exchanged.

The kiosk still asked me how much I wanted to tip. What am I tipping for.

I've not dealt with a tattoo artist, but make it make sense. I get tipping servers and even barbers, but don't tattoo artists set their own rates?
