Im a tattoo artist. We already charge a lot per hour. I myself charge $200 an hour. By no means should we be expecting a tip. If I get one that’s cool but I tell my clients that they don’t have to. Some people think it’s like a restaurant and that there’s a percentage they should tip.

I have 2 tatts, tipped on both because I loved the result and both my artists were exceptionally informative as to what they were doing and why. Im a curious person and asked a lot of questions both times.

Definitely treat it as a graciousness to good artists. I've not tipped artists and never saw em again. I always tip artists I would go to again. Some put in so much extra love and work. Its great when someone uses 110% to paint ya up.

Good artists are paid well and bad artists aren't getting my business. Just charge what you're worth.

I got a chest tattoo last November. The artist was like $225/hr, quoted me a certain amount for the piece, and when I went in for it, he ended up spending like 8 hours on my tattoo. Way more than we had originally planned for. He still stuck to the original quoted price, so I tipped him generously for it. That’s the kind of work I really respect, and I plan to go back to him soon.

I do something similar. I never want to go over someone’s budget but I also want them to get something cool. If that requires me to do extra I will. I say Im $200 an hour but honestly I rarely stick to that. If someone’s getting a lot of hours from me they definitely get a deal. A lot of good artists are this way. Your dude sounds awesome definitely go back!

That’s definitely a respectable mindset to have with your work. And yeah, my experience with him was great. I will say that after 8 hours of getting tattooed, I was having to dig deep to finish it, lol. It hit a point where we had come so far that it didn’t make sense to stop and make a whole other appointment, so I just stuck it out, but man…it was tender, lol.

In Greece I tipped on a tattoo and he thought I was nuts. But I truly appreciated the price and work.

I think its more akin to contractor work, where a tip isnt standard, but if you really are super impressed and thrilled with the work its nice

I can kind of see the logic since people tip barbers and this is kind of similiar except permanent.

If you have to touch me in any way you're getting 25%.

Unless of course you fuck it up then I am refusing to pay anything. I feel like thats a fair trade off.

I always tip my urologist

I’ve never had an unhappy artist when I bring an amount/quality of booze that is proportional to the size of the piece.

Obviously this requires knowing your artist as a friend first.

Does this mindset change when renting a booth? If someone smalltime was renting out for a chair, I would like to tip. As someone who works for tips, I would love to know bc I get it Not to say I won't tip, but 20% is quite a bit when I'm not sure sometimes

Honestly artists doing booth rent are making a killing most of the time. 20% on a tattoo is a lot depending on how big the tattoo is. If I do a $500 tattoo and they give me an extra $20 Im stoked. Tattoo artists are not dependent on tips.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard not to tip a tattoo artist. Everything I read to prep for my tattoos explicitly say to tip 20-30% in addition to the hourly rate.

bro FU ... back in my days a whole day session was around 500€ ... now people goes crazy and want a minium of 1100€ for exactly the same .. nobody needs over 1000€ in just a day.

Then every studio try to scam people with a giveaway .. U CANT WIN basically .. u get an instand notification "hey u dont win the grandprice but u got a 30% coupon" ... where u are basically at the same price like before ... Thanks for nothing.

got 3 times this shit with 3 different studios

(the weird part is the giveaway goes like 2-3 weeks but u get an instand mail that u didnt won that)
