I tipped my tattoo artist $50 once for a short sesssion and he still said something about the amount. Asshole owned his own studio and was independent so it’s not like his commissions were touched by anyone else at all

I wish we could take tips back when that happens

I wanted to so bad because it was not a complex design whatsoever and he ripped it straight off google, I just needed a basic cover up. I bet they only hassle and shakedown people they think will take it. And I did, aside from just finding a new artist

Are you US or EU. In europe 50$ is already a high tip.

US, I’ve tipped $100 for a really good tattoo before and the artist was a woman (harsh industry for them) who was on commission and I heard that was just a basic tip for tattoos but I won’t be repeating mistakes. Part of what keeps tipping culture so endemic here is the workers who want those tips. When we need to stand up for being correctly compensated

I’m not even 30 and I remember when I felt lucky to get anything at all for food delivery tips and holidays like the super bowl were the worst. Everyone suddenly became super tight on their change. Not their fault Pizza Hut at the time was getting away with paying drivers $4 an hour for deliveries though. Competition paying their workers more per hour was the only thing that forced Pizza Hut to do the same

How do they get away with paying 4$ per hour?

They had this thing set up in a loophole where customer tips would “make up” your wage up to the state minimum wage. If customers didn’t tip you enough to receive minimum wage for the hours worked then Pizza Hut would pay out. I was really desperate for a job at the time because I’m one of those rare people that moved out at 18 so I took the bs lol

I can't grasp the fact that this is actually legal and that they literally gain money from customers paying their workers wages.

Same as I also can’t grasp how many people were older than me still putting up with that shit 😩 and our economy is worse now than it was then

Also there very well could be something in law now that closed that loop but for all my past job experience, I doubt it and don’t currently know. Job competition should be enough to close that but law is all that prevents employers from further exploiting us

Well I hope you could manage to find a better job by now or at least netogiate a better wage. I can't imagine how mentally stressful it must be to rely financially on tips like that.

"oh, sorry, gave you the wrong bill, let me see that back."

Then the 1. In my imagination where I have a spine I'm pretty cool.

I tip my artist around $50, he never asks for it and I believe his rates to be fair. But he's exceeded my expectations on both tattoos I've gotten from him.
