Im not trying to hate, just trying to understand... is there ANY profession you dont have to tip on the US?

Like, do you guys tip your doctors, plumbers, mailman, the mechanic? Where is the line?

I have to go to the US next month, and I'm honestly scared of looking like an asshole by not tipping when I'm supposed to lol.

Oh no you'll look like an asshole either way lmao

Tip your landlord

Tips are really only expected at sit down restaurants, and if you don't wanna tip, don't. Not your responsibility to pay their wage.

2

u/Christmas_Panda 2h ago

Seconded. It’s for sit down restaurants only. A lot of the electronic payment providers that have the iPad payment systems began to implement tips into the programming. I’ve had staff tell me explicitly they feel awkward having the tip feature on the iPads because it used to just be a tip jar that was passively on the cashier’s desk and now it creates awkward tension. I think they should make it so the user has to prompt a tip versus being presented the tip screen. Or you know… pay you staff a real wage. Though for the record, my friends in the restaurant industry like the current tip system because they don’t pay taxes on cash tips.

u/IndependentNarrow131 2h ago

My wife use to have to tip out bus boys and hostesses a percent of the daily electronic tips, so if she got stiffed she just lost money to serve them. So stiffing tips is wrong some states like NC only pay like $2.13/hour for servers.

2

u/Texash-x 1h ago

If she has the authority, pay them more.

2

u/duckneykang 1h ago

i feel like the part thats wrong isn't stiffing the tips but the pay

1

u/FrostyConsequence97 7m ago

I love how you say the state only pays that amount. As if that's the maximum rate, not the minimum. Guess what, that's the minimum. Your wife's hands weren't tied like you're trying to make it sound.

"Sorry we can't give you more than $2.13 because the state lets us pay you jack shit. Better go shake down customers if you want to make rent."

-2

u/ent_whisperer 1h ago

They get paid $2.50 an hour specifically because tips factor into their wage. I completely agree with your sentiment, but the reality is if you can't afford to tip at a sit down restaurant, then you can't afford that restaurant. You need to tip.

1

u/Dr_Dank98 1h ago

Not my problem.

-4

u/ent_whisperer 1h ago

Ok.... Read up on empathy a bit maybe.

2

u/Dr_Dank98 1h ago

I empathize with them, but it isn't my problem or responsibility. They should get paid more, but it won't be from me.

-1

u/ent_whisperer 48m ago

You empathize with them and then immediately say "Not my problem," a statement specifically lacking any notion of empathy.

You are a participant in this society, of which we have norms and systems. You and I both don't like the tipping norm and system.

If I'm a full time server making 50k a year, almost my entire salary is coming from tips. Because that's the legal and societal system we have set up. If you don't tip someone at a sit down restaurant, you aren't sticking it to the man. You're not paying your share towards that server's salary. You're hurting them. Hurting someone is not being kind or empathetic.

If you have a problem with the tipping system, then help bring minimum wage up to the non tipping standard. Or wait until it happens from others. And then you can stop tipping, and celebrate a really dumb thing no longer exists.

But if you don't tip because you think it's not your responsibility, you're not sticking up for what is right. You're just being a jerk.

There is a sub, r/endtipping , where you will find people posting about the insanity of everyone in the US (doctors, plumbers, Online orders, mechanics, gas station cashiers, etc) expecting tips.

I love/hate how many places expect the tip before service is rendered.

The only people who are paid a wage where tipping is expected (as in, factored into their pay), are wait staff/servers. Even this is changing in some states.

6

u/Araz728 2h ago

Yeaaaah… doctors, plumbers, and mechanics don’t ask for nor expect tips in the US. I’m very curious where those guys come up with that nonsense.

1

u/bongart 2h ago

Yeaaah.. people in the End Tipping sub have provided pictures from doctor's offices of signs requesting tips. They have provided pictures of plumbers, mechanics, HVAC techs, and more presenting tablets requesting tips with electronic payments.

Just because you aren't seeing it where you are, doesn't mean it isn't happening elsewhere. Hell, corner store and gas station cashiers have been requesting tips in New Orleans since I lived there in the late 1990's.

2

u/bepatientbekind 1h ago

Do you have a link to posts of tipping requests at a doctor's office? I tried looking myself but could only find written stuff which is more easily faked. I've seen some pretty egregious tipping stuff before, but a doctor's office is new to me and seems like it would be illegal for some reason

1

u/noeyesfiend 55m ago

Don't worry, the tipping plague is spreading. My fucking drive through shit where allthey do is hand me food now expects a tip. In Japan, a tour boat I was on held out a fucking tipping plate with a QR code, thankfully no one tipped. It pains me to see that more people are asking for tips.

2

u/BlueLaserCommander 3h ago

It's typically service jobs where the service is done face to face. Excluding home/utility service.

So waiters, cab drivers/valet, bartenders/baristas, hair dressers/barbers, casino dealers, and tattoo artists.

u/namesarealltaken9 1h ago edited 1h ago

And why on Earth?

Also, why not doctors? Why not bus drivers? Why not shop assistants? Why not police?

All these people and more, they're not selling you any products which means that they provide you with a service. Even the shop assistant doesn't sell you a product because it's not their product and they don't pocket the price of the product, similar to how a waiter is not the actual subject selling you the meal.

But again and crucially: why on Earth?

This is mental to me

You can’t tip medical staff cause it against the law. But if it wasn’t. It probably be normalized

1

u/BlessedSaber1 3h ago

Generally the only services that are tipped are food and arts. But for food you really only need to tip for alcohol or a waiter that brings your food.

1

u/ThePoffinMan 2h ago

Don’t forget that the mailman and trash man expect holiday tips.

1

u/According_Ad5863 3h ago

I live in a major city and only tip for food delivery or food service.

I tipped my tree guy once because he was able to fit my work in on is “day off”.

Most places don’t ask and if they do it’s usually on a little screen when you check out.

A lot of machines just have it standard now but don’t feel any pressure to tip.

u/budabai 2h ago edited 2h ago

I cut lawns / do general property maintenance as a side hustle, and I get tips ALL the time.

I’ve got a lot of rich retirees as customers, and it is not uncommon for them to slip me an extra hundred dollar bill after I work for them for just a few hours.

I’m happy to only get paid my asking rate, but I’ll gladly take whatever money these people are willing to hand me.

1

u/tiffanyblue_ 2h ago

I do it because I feel guilty for making more money than the person behind the counter (and i'm broke from living in the same hcol city fwiw)

1

u/Ridgestone 1h ago

This is one of the main reason, and one reason why the system is messed up.

It is based on guilt and guilting of others.

1

u/ChewyChagnuts 2h ago

There have been examples on Reddit of self-serve point of sales machines asking for a tip! Like, WTF, who am I actually tipping? Myself?!

1

u/NPJenkins 2h ago

A good rule of thumb is that you’re expected to tip service workers. That doesn’t mean mechanics or doctors, but like waiters/waitresses or bartenders. Basically, if they’re waiting on you and cleaning up after you, you should tip them at least 10%, but 20% is considered more appropriate.

1

u/stirling1995 2h ago

I guess one way to look at it is blue collar services yes tips are appreciated and white collar services aren’t typically tipped.

1

u/boss302goat 2h ago

Just press no or 0 tip. I'm American and I dont tip AT ALL. Not my problem.

1

u/the_exile83 2h ago

They are 4% of the world population and they are fucking insane. Their society is complete nightmare fuel for people from a normal democracy like us.

1

u/WarlockArya 2h ago

U tip at sit down restaurants, bars, and maybe your barber thats pretty much it.

1

u/Jack3024 2h ago

It's mainly in the service industry

1

u/blastin_bi 2h ago

I do construction for a living and have been given tips and Holliday presents, its carzy. The local goth bar near me is awful about tips, even if you get a cheap drink and try to tip with coins they will throw them on the ground or at you

1

u/ElevenPinRelay 2h ago

Electrician here. No, I've never got a tip lol.

1

u/GhonaHerpaSyphilAids 1h ago

Just the uneducated trades

1

u/DreamingInTheDirt 1h ago

Everyone is saying restaurants only, but I would add that it is normal to tip tour guides as well.

1

u/Cheap_Boner_Pills 1h ago

Hi. Tipping at restaurants is really the only expected one. Just drop $5-10 on the table before you go. Dont worry about anything else. If they flip a touchpad around hit 0 or custom and do 0. I hope that helps. I do accept tips in the form of free awards if you find this info useful.

1

u/YoinkageOfficial 1h ago

Just don’t tip, ever.
Yeah youll look like an asshole for half a minute, but thats it.

1

u/GarethGobblecoque99 1h ago

You tip in most restaurant settings, you tip whoever cuts your hair, you tip a valet for moving your car, if someone carries your luggage up to a hotel room you give them a tip too. Those are basically the expected ones. In my personal experience I was taught you tip your tattoo artist, why I don’t know, and you tip a tow truck driver too. I don’t think those are as universal as the others though. Oh and you tip delivery drivers, taxis, Ubers and all that too.

We uh don’t pay people livable wages here

1

u/Zorro5040 1h ago

Artist, food delivery, and sit down restaurants. Also most businesses are asking for tips now, but nobody does.

1

u/_ManMadeGod_ 1h ago

We only tip waiters and drivers and artists.

Well, I don't.

1

u/Benathintennathin 57m ago

Only place where you should be tipping is at sit down restaurants, in a lot of states servers entire wage is based off tips but anywhere else including fast food places you don’t really have to tip unless you want to.

u/AGGIE_DEVIL 52m ago

I had a guy come fix my sprinklers in my yard. He turned the tablet toward me with a percentage for tip for the total fee (parts and service). The parts were way more than the service fee. I’m not tipping on parts, my guy. He grumbled and left after I just paid the total.

1

u/flopflapper 45m ago

Can I ask why you listed 4 professions that don’t get tips?

1

u/Square-Collection917 42m ago

I'm a lawyer and I've never been tipped. I did get paid in tacos once though and that was dope

1

u/-joker-joker-joker- 31m ago

Don't worry, you'll be fine. Mostly service industry: food servers, coat checks, hair salons, etc.

What's become ridiculous is the option to tip counter service where they're just taking your order. Nothing happens if you don't provide a "tip" and no one cares.

Feel free to dm for more advice

As a kind gesture we get our mail carrier a Christmas gift. It does sound silly but we do

1

u/InvasiveThoughts8 10m ago

You tip your tipper.

1

u/TheBeardedLegend 5m ago

You don’t have to tip ANYONE. While it may cause societal retaliation, you aren’t required.

1

u/StreetofChimes 4m ago

Tip a valet. Tip a barista. Tip a server. Tip a bellhop. Tip a delivery person.

No. I don't tip my doctor, plumber, nor mechanic. I absolutely tip my mail carrier - dude is awesome and I love him.
