Shards. Layers would be an improvement unfortunately.

u/sporkparty 5h ago
Crazy that’s what it’s come to. I remember when they first introduced layers and everyone hated them but now we’re basically begging for layers because shards are somehow even worse.

u/that_jam 5h ago

5

That is what a shard is, yes. It is the worst possible thing for an MMO that wants you to feel part of the world.
3
u/Uncreativity10 5h ago
I’m glad they’re keeping this shitty sharding otherwise some quests will be painful because now everyone is questing. Too many people? Sick ill shard away

u/Supreme_Salt_Lord 4h ago

•
•
u/AzuzaBabuza 2h ago
Because they want to level fast and efficiently (not that they'd admit to it), but they want to do it via open world questing and not dungeons.
They hated dungeon spam meta, but are okay with the quest spam meta because its their preferred method of leveling.
•
•
u/Laggo 1h ago
And are we not going to pretend this is the same situation here? People pretending this is about "socializing" and stuff are hilarious. Just admit that you want better dungeon XP because you just want to chain dungeons with no chatting or thought to level instanced without engaging in the world.

u/Agent101g 6h ago
Also, you can still run outside world xp if Dungeon XP is reverted to normal.

•
u/traderbusto 3h ago
I could see a plausible argument from the Dev side along the lines of: “Players are already gaining access to the best gear for their levels inside dungeons, much better than quest gear. We feel there should be some trade-off, given this advantage.”
I could buy that argument…20 years ago. But why now? Again, it just feels today like it’s coming from a place of, “We know people are gonna start getting bored once they max out their chars, how can we keep them around longer?”
→ More replies (4)•
u/oldlogin_99999x1z 1h ago
We feel there should be some trade-off
The tradeoff is that dungeons are group content without guaranteed rewards. It wouldn't make sense for the gear to equal solo questing.

u/Dasbeerboots 4h ago
That's what gets me. They're the same ones advocating to take it slow and enjoy the journey, not worrying if they fall behind. Then why do they care one bit if someone levels faster than them?
•
u/ezekielgraves 3h ago
you wanna know why? wow players live with the biggest FOMO in the entire universe. even if they say they can take 3 months to get to 60 and dont mind it, they'll feel that FOMO deep in their veins.
•
u/Dasbeerboots 3h ago
It's deeper than that. They don't want anyone to play differently than their ideal playstyle.
•
u/traderbusto 1h ago
FOMO is a good way to describe me, for sure. I was the exact player you describe before I left after Cataclysm. Pretty much all I did was tank dungeons all the way to 85. The precise reason I came back to MoP Classic was because I know I missed out on so much content.
•
u/ezekielgraves 1h ago
The whole reason we have this heated dungeon xp topic is FOMO. People want others to be slow because they don't want to feel left behind even tho they claim they want to take it slow themselves. Yesterday I disclosed the open world grinding method which is way faster than any leveling method currently and not 10 minutes later, there were already 2 posts on blizzard forums calling blizzard to nerf this method. It's all down to FOMO. And not gonna lie, it's in all of us, just in different shapes.

I tried leveling as a healer with dungeon spam last week in the beta. It took nearly 5 hours of constant dungeons to go from level 21 to 22. And that's only counting time spent in the dungeons, not travelling to them.
The next day I quested from 22 to 23, which took an hour and a 45ish minutes.

Original dungeon mob EXP gave 100xp
Forever nerfed the EXP to 20exp
Then they upped EXP to 25expWhen the beta ends, mobs are still giving 25exp per kill
If you spam dungeons, your leveling journey is going to be 75% slower; than when you spammed dungeons in 2019 Classic Launch.

Yo, why is this such a hard concept for people. We want to run dungeons multiple times for a number of reasons. Loot, fun, and xp. If you remove xp from that equation, you get a lot less people running the dungeons which makes it harder to find groups even if you only wanted to run for loot and fun. It a pretty simple concept and there are tons of other ways to nerf powerleveling that don't ruin a huge part of the experience for those of us who like to dungeon grind.

u/kopecm13 6h ago edited 5h ago

And on top of this, they’ve gone ahead and made a bunch of new dungeons. Why make them when they don’t want us in them more than once or twice? I’m no dungeon spammer, in fact I’ve always hated spamming dungeons, but it feels bad going into a dungeon a second time. Especially if you don’t get loot
•
u/Roofong 4h ago
Or even in old dungeons like WC they've updated items like the Fang set to provide more interesting and powerful bonuses. The odds of exiting WC with the full set (or even partial) after a quest run are vanishingly low. If I'm leveling a druid and want the full set I'll just get 60s to run me through for quick loot runs. Very social.
The designers of various aspects of this game are not even on the same continent, let alone the same page.
7
u/orus_heretic 5h ago
The part that will feel really bad is having several friends leveling at the same time. It will be impossible to stay synced on quests but previously you could run a dungeon for moderate xp. Now you can choose to put leveling on hold or stay solo questing. Considering one of their pillars is promoting social interaction, I don't see how this achieves that.

•
u/Bohya 3h ago
Indeed. I'm not someone who spams dungeons to 60, however I will run dungeons for their quests and specific items that I may want to get. I do know that some people will spam dungeons to 60, especially healers and tanks. Regardless of my opinion over some players choice to utilise this avenue to levelling, I can still acknowledge that their incentive to run dungeons is now gone. There will be far fewer tanks and healers in the dungeon pool, meaning that finding groups will take significantly longer than it otherwise would.
This dungeon experience nerf will still end up negatively impacting players who do not spam dungeons. There are no winners here.

It’s not a hard concept. There’s just a segment of the player base that is more invested in punishing other players because they’ve built up this arbitrary ‘correct way to play the game’ and they like rage baiting people about it. This is directly linked with how misanthropic the player base is. Everything is downvoted here. Everything is narrowed into extremes. Theres zero nuance. WoW just has an overall miserable player base. We all know it. It’s pretty obvious being in the sub

It's not just about powerlevelling, remember they said they wanted people out in the world. Dungeon grinding is the opposite of that, it's just afk in town till you find a group and run the instance. And i for one don't mind, even though i love healing in dungeons.
I also think the consistent instance grinding is what made retail what it is today, super antisocial (not that classic players cant be antisocial either). I want more group content out in the world, give me reasons to team up with players i come across. That's what makes mmo's so special to me.

Major straw man. Everyone knows you can still run dungeons as much as you want. There's just no longer rewarding after completing the quests. Isnt that how it should be. You do them once for the big reward and that's it. You do it more times for fun or to chase a particular boss drop, not getting levels quickly is actually great cause it ensures the gear isnt outclassed that quickly too while you farm it.

I played Lineage 2 from the launch of the NA servers way back when.
After getting repeatedly camped by chinese farmers, and having been told to kill my mom a million times, and essentially getting to the point that you were either going to RMT or quit the game, I quit the game. Koreans and Chinese especially, are "fine" with RMT and extreme grinding.
As far as EQ vs WoW goes, no shit. That is why people played WoW and made it the biggest MMO to ever exist and destroyed the chances of any other MMO to ever be more than mildly successful in NA. There is a level of respect of time that people expect these days, and EQ/Korean games don't have it.

What about groups of friends who don’t want to get stuck on item fetch quests because the drop rate is bad and there’s no shared loot? What about people who want the social experience of doing something with the holy trinity gameplay?
Dungeon spamming, though never the truly fastest leveling method, is fine to be nerfed IMO. Only, they nerfed dungeon mob xp too much, 10-20% would have been better to cement dungeons as suboptimal. There are more dungeons to run, all with quests.
You can run those dungeons, complete all those quests, get a level or two, then do some quests in the open world for a level, and then you’ll be ready for the next dungeon.
You won’t be able to reset SM over and over to skip all the open world content from 30-40 like you could in classic. but like if you really want to do all the instanced content, you don’t have to spend much more time in the open world. Simply by virtue of the fact that there’s more instanced content available.
This conversation is tired and boring and I honestly wish mods would just remove these threads. They’re completely pointless and not-productive. Just a bunch of people screaming into the void and at straw men that exist in their own head.
And honestly? I play with my friends. We do instanced content together to level. I have always been more of a dungeon leveler.
But having done SSF in hardcore to 60, it’s opened my eyes to a side of the game that I have never experienced before. It was a lot of fun.
I like the idea of questing for a bit, doing a dungeon run or two, and having a nice flow or balance between types of content.
It seems like that is the intended design that the devs are going for. But for some reason people are talking about it like it’s either questing or dungeon spam. You can do Hall of thanes, Deadmines, wailing caverns, Shadowfang keep, and Stormwind Stockades with relatively little questing between each run being necessary. You really don’t have to spend that much time in the open world if you don’t want to.
•
u/DepartureMobile4475 2h ago
Im glad you brought up HC. I really feel like the once per day limit for each dungeon limit was healthy for the game. It was still possible to do lots of dungeons, but not the same one over and over. It made you travel around the world to do a variety of dungeons instead, and id often do some quests in between each dungeon. I feel like thats blizzard’s intention, and i’m happy they at least care about it. They didn’t flesh out the world only for people to return to the dungeon spam meta to skip it all. Whether this current implementation is the right way to go is hard to say, but its annoying how people are treating it like its black and white. The quests by default give you good enough gear, and i’m just planning on doing every single dungeon as a prot pally with my healer friend. At most ill do a second run depending on gear drops, but i dont need to be bis to level
•
u/Bstani01 3h ago
I’m convinced the people who are mad at this change haven’t even played the game. The changes feel wonderful as long as you do dungeon quests. Do you guys genuinely want to spam SM spellcleave 100x?? This is coming from a holy priest main who LOVES dungeons. You guys are pretending like you can’t run dungeons with your friends. You can, you just need to pick up the quests. It usually takes 1-2 runs to get the quests done and then maybe a third if you need some gear. By that time, you’ve already outleveled the dungeon and it’s on to the next instance. I have done very few quests 1-30 while being spec’d deep holy and I’ve had a GLORIOUS experience with this game.
And hey, get this: they added more dungeons. So instead of spamming the same instance 100x you can run multiple new dungeons 1-3 times a piece.

Yeah, I went like 14 - 16 in an RFC, then 17 - end of 19 in ROL, then 19-22 in Wc (with a little questing in there for dungeon quest pre reqs). The idea that you get no exp and there is no reason to run dungeons is just wrong
•
u/Grumdord 4h ago
I don't even care about the exp nerf but this is just a straight up strawman. Blatant even.

After looking at this subreddit, I feel like I was the only one doing Dungeons for loot only.

You’d be surprised at just how many socially inept people play wow and don’t actually want to play an mmorpg.

u/Chazbeardz 4h ago
Because forming my own group and finding people to fill it with is soooo anti-social. The fuck 😂
•
u/Available_Advice4430 4h ago
The people complaining about having to make friends and groups for dungeons are anti social… I think you think I said the opposite of what I said 🤣

I will happily tank a dungeon 10 times because there are some bracers in there I want. Then I'll run it five more times because the rogue wants some boots. Then I'll run it again because the druid needs to grab some socks for a quest they forgot about or something.
Might run it a couple more times afterwards just for funsies.

u/KingFroblin 6h ago
I just want the better gear so I can go back to questing and not suffer while doing that
5
u/Mallzs 6h ago
You didn't see that in beta? Usually you'd get a group to do a dungeon back to back. Never had anyone want to. And I tank lol. I didn't want to either but always asked as the tank since it's beta. I'll only run them once as is.

u/tregnoc 5h ago
I'm calling BS. I've had more groups run it back than only do 1 run and I've done a lot of dungeons in the beta lol

Most of us do too. We would also like it to be more efficient than it currently is so we can also progress with our friends and not only solo questing
2
u/oniskieth 5h ago
I mainly do it for loot too. Like when I get all the gear I want I stop running the dungeon.
But it was nice that when I didn’t get the drop i had a chunk of exp instead of wasted time.

I did em for loot but didn’t feel bad because I knew I was getting pretty decent xp, now I feel bad because I feel like I’m delaying my leveling to get loot that I’ll outlevel, so it doesn’t feel as worth it

I kinda always thought the upside to dungeons was supposed to be superior gearing to help out your questing, not circumventing questing entirely. Looks like Blizzard agrees

It’s honestly not been bad at all since they increased it a bit. You can actually make decent leveling progress in there, at least with rested XP (which is easier to come by in forever).

I've been running dungeons a lot in the beta and the XP really isn't that bad. It's not as great as it used to be, but I still get a good part of a level from doing a run, and that's after I've already done the quests. The gear upgrades are really nice too.

"I love running dungeons, its my fav activity, it lets me play with my friends and we can avoid all the outside world and we can get a ton of gold and items and gear and we can just hang out for hours its great!"
Blizz developers. "Awesome, so we changed it, so now all of that is the same but it's no longer the optimal way to play. We don't want to see people going from level 28 to 44 in an afternoon with SM spam in 12 hours, and 44 to 60 with ZF and Mara and BRD spam in under 12 hours."
"Well, now dungeons suck I hate them. Why are you personally attacking me. Now no one will play tanks or healers."
10
u/yosacke123 6h ago
I've never done a dungeon more than maybe 3-4 times per character but I still dislike the change because run 2-4 won't feel good to do. Simple as that.
•
u/Vindikus 4h ago
Same, I really dislike how people frame anyone opposed to the change as degenerate min-maxers. I like to quest for a few levels then do a dungeon for a few levels. The nerf feels like im being punished for no reason.

u/welcomefiend 5h ago edited 5h ago
those numbers seem to be like 5 times as fast as realistic, no group on earth is getting 44 to 60 in 12 hours spamming brds
these numbers are a bit above even solo mages doing 15 min brd runs, it would be completely insane to compare a group of levelers who aren't mages to a solo mage on era doing brd, not to mention those runs aren't even possible anymore
if you think that i'm going to get my 5 bros together, play rshaman, warrior, mage, warlock, feral druid, go into BRD and get 250k per hour in any version of the game you've bumped your head
6
u/slipstick-libby 6h ago
"Haha, booster, you can't spam dungeons anymore! You're a hypocrite, you never loved dungeons you just loved the xp!"
Just curious, how often did you go back and kill kobold vermin after you left Northshire Abbey? Aren't they still menacing the area? Oh you didn't go back?
Strange, I guess you don't truly love the game either, you just love the xp.

A mage soloing ZF GY with scarabs before they broke the farm is not getting the kind of experience rate you seem to think dungeon cleave groups get.
You can make an argument that dungeon spam shouldn't be comparable to questing without throwing out ridiculous numbers to pretend an optimal dungeon spam group wasn't at most maybe slightly better exp per hour than questing.
1
u/broom2100 5h ago
There is a difference between dungeons being suboptimal for leveling, and dungeons being a legitimate waste of time for leveling. A 76% xp nerf is the latter.
4
u/FirstAd1119 5h ago
It was never the optimal way to play, solo questing was faster BEFORE the nerf.

people that complained that "is too easy" because they were trapped at lvl 20 and got all blues from dungeons those are the one to blame for the state the dungeons are now
they don't give good enough rewards to go out of your way to do after the quest
it completely defeated the reason to play dungeons
low reward for a big time investment is just not worth it
im gonna do dungeons one time for the quest and the achievement and thats it
would love to farm some blues atleast but even those are nerfed

Blizzard: We are going to be adding more dungeons at the early and mid-game ranges, to diversify the leveling experience. We will also be lowering dungeon XP, to incentivize players doing quests or unique dungeons on their way to 60
Players: Well you just don't want me to play this game. I'm not a Frost mage, so my only form of speed leveling is to do the same dungeon 5 times

•
u/grislebeard 2h ago
I actually like this? I see dungeons as loot pinatas and questing where you actually level up. I don't wanna outlevel my cool gear and the quests I'm currently doing because it took 3-4 tries to get what I was afeter!

u/Fussinfarkt 6h ago
I just looooveeee that questing is the only way to level up. Thank god I can’t level an alt through lots of dungeon running anymore. I would hate some random person to be mad at that, even though it doesn’t affect them at all.
•
u/Kaffe-Mumriken 4h ago
Guys I love running dungeons, I always heal or tank whatever’s needed I just love running dungeons. When I run dungeons I feel connected to the universe, I have so much fun. It’s better than sex and pooping, hell it’s better than sex while pooping and eating a 72oz rare steak with fine red wine.
But if you don’t give me xp for it I will never run dungeons again. I hate running dungeons with no xp, it’s so boring, everyone trying to run dungeons suck, and it’s pointless anyway. Why would I run dungeons when I could be out in the world? Dungeon running is idiotic and menial.

How many of these posts are we going to continue to see?
They can't make everyone happy and if they try "Forever" will turn into "Retail". Where they cater to anything and everyone which is honestly why its pretty terrible these days.
If you want to grind dungeons then go back to Classic Era, but if you want to experience a new way to play WoW then just let the Devs do their job and limit the complaining to things like leveling by turning in Apples for 7 hours all the way to 60 (I can't believe that's a real thing).

u/SC2Sole 5h ago
What's the ideal number of runs per dungeon for the average player? For me, 3-4 times seems about right before I start getting sick of it.
I'm trying to understand the good-faith explanation why dungeon leveling is ruined. Is the argument that every single player is only going to run it once, and therefore it would be impossible to find a group for your second run? Hundred thousands of players on a mega server, all playing at different times and different speeds, and I'm never going to be able to fill for 4 runs? Am I not addicted enough to understand this? What am I missing?

u/Manzhah 3h ago
Problem was that it used to be 3-4 runs in classic, that might get you the levels you need to progress to a better questing area or to a new dungeon, now thanks to 76 % nerf it's way more. Imagine if quests were nerfed 76 %, you'd do all of elwyn forest or durotar and still be at level 3.
