Oh man that is very unfortunate. Fuck!
He got used during training from jumping over staged obstacles that were safe, this simple barrier just looked like any other. Poor doggo

I watched my 13 lb dachshund leap off a bridge with a 30 ft drop into some water. He thankfully came out of the event unscathed (thanks to the water landing). I was naive, never would’ve thought an animal would do that and now have learned a valuable lesson to not second guess my gut when I think “maybe I should leash him.”

u/Ote-Kringralnick 20h ago
Dachshunds believe themselves to be invulnerable, I've seen them pick fights with dogs 10 times their size
61
u/Haunting_Goose1186 19h ago
A few years ago, a miniature daschund named Valeria escaped from her owners on Kangaroo Island (I probably don't need to mention this happened in Australia) and the little shit survived for almost 2 years before finally getting captured and returned to her owners. She recieved a clean bill of health and had even out on weight.
They really are indestructible. 😂
29
u/memgone 19h ago
That was extraordinary. In the footage when they were setting traps to capture the little bastard, he behaved as though he didn’t want to be found. Seemed as though he was living his best life; running around all day, playing with other animals and clearly eating very well given his weight gain. You would have to think that at anytime during his 2 years on the run he could have approached a farm. He loved it.

I will never forget one time when I was a child hearing frantic barking and looking out my window to find out what was happening only to see two huge dogs sprinting with their tails tucked across my yard. For a second I thought they must be being chased by a mountain lion but then I saw the third dog. It was a dachshund terrorizing the big dogs 😂
42
u/ambushequine 19h ago
I used to work in animal control. Sooo many bad outcomes can be prevented by leashing a dog. Please just leash your dog. For their sake more than anything. Please.
*Buuut I do get that police/working dogs are a whole different thing. I hope they can prevent this from happening again. 😔
8
u/hollyhollyhock 18h ago
I had a dog who decided to jump up on a wall for the first time in his life at an overlook with a dropoff on the other side. Lucky boy got yanked down by his leash instead of slowly hoisted hoping the harness/leash hardware didn't break. If he wasn't leashed we would have been looking for him at the bottom. Animals do weird things sometimes, leashes work so much better than "I trust my dog" at keeping them safe.

Dog has better healthcare than most Americans. I am glad he's okay, though
2.2k
u/WorkO0 1d ago edited 1d ago
Healthcare is the same. Difference is the dog won't have to file for bankrupcy for that helicopter ride.
2.2k
u/TrollTollTony 1d ago
That's the point. That dog essentially has single payer healthcare that is paid out by our taxes. If I jumped off a bridge and was air lifted to hospital I would never financially recover and likely wouldn't get all of the procedures the health care providers recommend because they would be denied by insurance (this is a think that really happens, procedures are cancelled because they aren't covered). So yeah, he has better healthcare than most Americans.

u/Mecha-Dave 22h ago
When I was poor and had no health insurance I actually found a friendly veterinarian to prescribe me antibiotics.

u/Elk-Assassin-8x6 21h ago

u/im_fcking_radiant 22h ago
To your point re:ambulance rides - an ambulance ride followed my credit report around for years because I never paid them. However, I never received a bill because I’d moved since then and for whatever reason, it was never forwarded.
Upon looking into it, it turns out they never even bothered to bill my insurance (which should’ve covered 100%) so I was under the impression it had been taken care of. It took 5 YEARS and hours of phone calls, and pages of documentation to get that wiped from my credit report. And then it was only wiped from one and still on the other two. 😡
Thank goodness it’s since been resolved, but that should’ve never even happened in the first place.
And that was only 1 of 2 errors on my credit report….
Anyway, you’re right - American healthcare is fucked. The credit system is jacked. Politics is out of control. And we’re meant to be placated with occasional protests and voting.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (40)66

It's less healthcare in this case amd more asset management. Canine units are expensive. A new bite dog cost around $30k to $50k depending on location and training (this range is based on my last canine unit patient from around the early 2020s-it's been a while since I left the vet med field. It's very likely that the cost has increased). To be fair, I'm not sure of the sniffer dog's cost. I only about bite dog's cost after asking about the level of care they receive.
This is an observation based on my time in vet med working with police pups. For example, root canals and crowns are possible in dogs. The only dogs that I witnessed receiving this very expensive care were canine units. Their teeth are treated as an asset. Fixing the issue is more cost effective than purchasing and training a new dog.
Edit to add #1: The guy in the video may be the handler and not the owner. The difference is that if the guy quits the force the dog goes to a different handler. When police dogs retire the handlers do have the option of adopting them in my experience. This happened with a sniffer dog that was shot multiple times (head wounds that affected his nasal passages and a badly broken front leg). He survived but his injuries were significant enough to medically retire him. His handler was very bonded to him and happily adopted him.
Edit to add #2: Y'all. No where in this comment did I claim to be an expert on this. I am only sharing personal experience from caring for canine units as patients. The information above is based on somewhat brief interactions with local law enforcement that were willing to answer my curiousity questions. I am certainly not an expert on this nor am I associated with law enforcement in any way.
Rather than arguing with me, please share your own experiences and info. This has the potential to be a rad info exchange.

The average American contributes $95,000/year on average and assuming 40 years of working, that is $3.8 million. The fact that Americans don't have universal healthcare like every other developed nation is a travesty and reflection of their societal values or lack thereof.
→ More replies (9)7
u/Little_SmallBlackDog 19h ago
Agreed. There's a self responsibility assumption for humans in America. That's one of the reasons America doesn't have universal healthcare. I don't agree with it. I'm just adding a perspective.

I adopted my dog when she was 5 months old. She was a dream puppy. Smart, sweet, easily trained. 3 weeks into our beautiful relationship, I, like a complete idiot, had her in my lap while driving down busy road with my windows down. One moment she was there, one moment she was gone.
I heard a loud squeel, followed by tires screetching and horns honking. I pulled over, got out and started running........ there she was. Under a tree. I won't go into the details, but after an emergency trip to the emergency animal hospital, she made it out ok.
We went on to have the most amazing 14 years together.
Edit: will you guys freakin' stop with this empathy?😆. Now you've got me ugly crying down in the basement while my wife and babies are upstairs in bed.
My Dog's name was Gemma. She was my best friend and until our son was born, part of me just figured I'd check myself out once she was no longer with me (that plan has long since been thrown out).
I can't talk about her in real life because I can't keep it together. So it's nice finally sharing something about her with anyone. More pics have been added to the comments below. Please enjoy.
Edit #2: For any of you who are still struggling with the death of a pet, or any loved one, really. The words that always come to my mind, despite making my heart hurt worse, also give me some comfort: "Grief is the price we pay for love." It only hurts so much because the love was so strong. We're lucky to experience that kind of love in our lives.

Jesus you guys are fucking killing me with this stuff. I'm so sorry that this is still such a raw ache for you. We all cope and morn in our own ways, but I'm with you on the soul dog part. I don't know if I'll ever have another dog, but I suspect I won't. Other people may adopt another shortly after. Either decision is ok! We enter these relationships knowing that it's a short contract, but it doesn't make it any easier when the time comes. The fact that they are forever reliant upon you for their needs only means that they are just children that never grow up. I imagine you had your dog for a large portion of its life, if not the majority of it. How wonderful of a thought it is to know that after you came into their life, they never had to know what life was like without you.

u/StrangerOnTheReddit 22h ago
Big agree, I get being pissed off that a dog is getting better healthcare than humans, but the solution to that is better healthcare for humans... which is absolutely on the table, if they'd try voting blue 😭
I'm happy my tax dollars went to fixing up this pup. Hopefully they changed processes to keep working dogs on leashes, unless their job duties require otherwise. This shouldn't have ever happened, but since it did, yes let's get medical care for the poor innocent pupper!

We had our local K9 officer leave his dog in the patrol car in the summer when he got home.
The dog died he found it the next morning, and they gave him another one.

This is like the lady who's grandkid drowned in a nearby pond while she wasn't paying attention. The mother had another kid and eventually let her watch that one too; just for grandma to forget her in a hot car for a couple hours. When it comes to life and death, you can't be giving negligent people second chances - honest accident or not

But if a member of the public were to injure or kill the dog, they'd get charged with assault on an officer and animal cruelty to k9 officer or homicide of an officer. Another cop can leave in locked in a hot car to die and its just an oops.
A parent can leave their child in a hot car and (rightfully) get the book thrown at them. But he leaves his fellow officer and they just replace it?

Because dogs are dumb as hell sometimes. This is why you don’t keep your window rolled down in your car when traveling with your dog, they jump out of moving cars all the time when there is enough space to.

My German Shepard/chow Sammy jumped out of my dad’s truck window one time when he was taking him on his very first car ride in the neighborhood. The dumb bastard was just so damn excited to spend some time with grandpa and got a little too excited and fell out the window. I’m confused why is he tossing a ball on a freeway?
96
u/Sentientmustard 23h ago edited 23h ago
To not give a joke answer, since he’s walking the freeway they likely had it shut down and he was just there killing time with his cruiser blocking the entrance. Police dogs are super high energy, task driven, and spend all day with their officer, so it’s pretty common that they will throw a ball or do some other “job” like look for a hidden item when they aren’t actively working. Probably just didn’t think about it and did what they always do while waiting around.
Doesn’t excuse it obviously, but I’d bet he also doesn’t think it’s excusable. K9 officers are usually super coveted jobs and the vast majority really do treat their dog like a pet.

The way they get a dog to search is to pretend to throw a toy that has the same scent as whatever they're looking for, then the dog goes looking for it. If the dog finds a matching scent, it signals and waits for the handler to give them the toy.

So for non police dogs… if you have a critical emergency like this, can you call 911 and get a chopper to come out??? Like wtf I want that for my dog!

A company i worked at gave you the opportunity to have a life flight option for ONE of your loved ones in lieu of bonuses.
So I got it for my daughter and let me tell ya, that shit is EXPENSIVE. Never had to use it thank God but it was nice to have.
