American people can't get basic healthcare but an american police dog can get a medical evac by chopper. Fantastic.

62

u/SwimmingSwim3822 1d ago

My electric company sent a helicopter to rescue a seagull off a power line.

That is all.

28

u/Recent-Honey5564 1d ago

Probably more for the power line, they couldn’t care less about the seagull

7

u/PristineAwareness911 1d ago

Yea in this case they are preventing potential catastrophe.

1

u/SwimmingSwim3822 1d ago

Nah it was all about the publicity. They waited for the local news story to really crank up before they sent the crew on day 3 or 4 of dude flappin around up there.

1

u/Few_Program_2303 23h ago

Uh it was probably moreso to stop the bad pr

1

u/SwimmingSwim3822 23h ago

Yeah that'd be the publicity I specifically mentioned.

2

u/Novel-Initiative-900 1d ago

Interesting. I always see birds chilling on powerlines around here. Is there a reason they sent a rescue helicopter?

5

u/SwimmingSwim3822 1d ago

It was all tangled up. It lived, at least for one news-cycle-worth.

1

u/astralchanterelle 21h ago

the dude probably went home and ate a chicken

265

u/MuffledShuffle 1d ago

Anyone can get medical evac by chopper. Especially if you go hiking and get injured in the woods or on a mountain. It's definitely going to be expensive as shit though.

As for the dog, taxes will probably pay for it's medical expenses.

471

u/RedTurtle78 1d ago

Yeah the point is that taxes should pay for our medical expenses.

The worst part is that Israel could have it's missiles and people could still have healthcare. But then the lobbying health insurance companies would be too upset.

5

u/denom_chicken 1d ago

What about their jobs?! They ask as AI companies talk about replacing every job with robots.

Love it here

2

u/Peanut_007 1d ago

The health insurance industry is one of the most exposed to AI driven job losses because none of what it does is actually based on rational decision making. It's all just making more paperwork and AI is great at that.

If you ever wonder why it seems like the only people who want to move to the USA are folks who are desperate, and you rarely get folks from other "rich" nations moving to the USA, the f'd up healtchare system in the USA is high up there in the reasons why. Throw in guns, next to no vacation/sick days/parental leave, politics, etc., and most folks with options will hesitate.

Other countries tend to have have a much stronger social safety net and solid workplace protections and benefits. The USA is borderline (if not outright) dystopian by comparison.

1

u/LateConsideration903 12h ago

To be honest, guns and weather that doesnt include 6 months of suffering in negative temperatures are the only two factors that makes me think about moving to the US . But these 2 points pale in comparison to what i'd lose if i left

2

u/ComprehensiveDoubt55 1d ago

I was just researching 2027 plans today, which are already bankrupting my small business. My daughter and I are medically needy, though, and it's covering my antidepressants from this career I hate, so there's that.

I'm glad the dog is okay, though. I generally like dogs more than cops any day of the week, so there's that ray of bullshit sunshine.

•

u/MuchWow81 9h ago

Im in the same boat. Ill be paying over $30k next year in premiums for a high deductible plan. Wooo

•

u/raptor5466 5h ago

Police dogs have better healthcare than me. Yeah that makes sense.

1

u/WhiskyDelta14 18h ago

COMMUNIST!!!

1

u/cannuckwoodchuck13 1d ago

Instead its going to Russia to buy diesel, who gets it from Iran, where they are also spending your tax dollars on bombing schools.

3

u/CantaloupeShort7311 1d ago

Not always. Colorado doesn't charge for search & rescue (or evacuation) by helicopter.

3

u/draft_animal 23h ago

I work outdoors in remote areas, my boss unknowingly ingested an edible (he thought it was candy) and the team he was working with thought he was having a stroke so he get helicoptered out. The bill was $35,000 for the flight, which is both a lot of money but also less than I expected given how expensive medical stuff is here.

4

u/Additional_Delay_793 1d ago

This was not the woods or on a mountain it's an expressway. A police car would have worked just fine. It's a dog!

-2

u/RelevantIAm 1d ago

→ More replies (1)

•

u/_reverse 7h ago

Actually in a lot of counties the search and rescue team expenses are paid for via taxes to the HC ride is free. But you pay for the ambulance from the helipad to the hospital :(

1

u/NoAdvertising2 1d ago

If that person has insurance thru thier company no it wouldnt be expensive my brother had to be life flighted to a hospital due to a brain injury and almost died and he had insurance so it was covered i think he owned a small amount but not a life changing amout

-8

u/RPM314 1d ago

Stop changing the subject. Previous talked about BASIC healthcare and I have to read your nonsense while my friend in the next room over can't see a dentist about a tooth infection because Medicaid won't allow it.

7

u/copperwatt 1d ago

But... basic health care was also a subject change?

4

u/Striking-Working610 1d ago

Please don't post nonsense while their roommate is in the next room. Thanks.

7

u/copperwatt 1d ago

Ok, let's wait until the roommate is two rooms away.

5

u/RippinFissure 1d ago

Its a 3 room minimum for nonsense, sorry.

2

u/Notactualyadick 1d ago

Oh my god, what has this world come to. It's at least a 4 room minimum to be basic decency.

Then stop reading a public forum. You are not in charge of who post and what they post.

3

u/johnny-Low-Five 1d ago

USA medicaid? 100% covers an infected tooth, it's actually considered the dental equivalent of an emergency and other than finding a dentist that has an opening, your roommate just needs to show up. An untreated infection can be lethal, medicaid won't cover a root canal but getting antibiotics, and depending on the situation, having the tooth pulled asap are covered. Sometimes the dentist will want the antibiotics to start working first but if it's that bad they'll pull the tooth and start a course of antibiotics.

3

u/incapablepotato 1d ago

Hey friendly tip. If it’s an actual infection and his mouth is swollen. Go to the ER it will be considered an emergency and they will write it as such. You’ll get antibiotics. Then they will give you a referral for the dentist to pull it.

I had a friend that was in high speed roll over on the highway. His insides got all twisted around and was in critical. They flew him out on the flight for life and he went into surgery. They were able to rearrange his insides and he made it out with a really cool scar going from his chest to lower stomach.

Those dogs can also take way any rights against search and seizure you ever thought you had! No judge, no warrant, no investigation necessary. Just a signal to the human dog handler officer (who determines what is and isn’t a signal), and boom, all your rights are gone!

3

u/Hartstockz 12h ago

They are also wrong over 50% of the time.

•

u/immaownyou 9h ago

They dont even need a false signal from their handler to signal a find. They can pick up subtle body language from their handlers if they (the person) thinks the suspect is guilty the dog will signal even if they dont smell anything to please their handler

As an American I am not okay with how hard it is to find good healthcare, but I support med choppers for pups

11

u/NoAdvertising2 1d ago

Any human in america would get a life flight if the injury is bad enough I dont know why people think they wouldnt

23

u/robis1923 1d ago

True, but they might wish they were dead after getting the bill.

•

u/mowtowcow 8h ago

Not really. They cant force you to pay for emergency medical care and hospitals cant deny a patient in need of emergency medical care, whether they can pay or not. It's not illegal to not pay for emergency medical care. It will hurt your credit once it goes to collections, but there's no law rhat says you owe 5 grand for an ambulance ride or 25 grand (or whatever it costs) for life flight. You dont have to pay it.

•

u/Sweet_Water_8459 3h ago

Even they won’t take your house?

•

u/tayswampflorida 4h ago

An ambulance ride 2 miles down the road costs $500+ and thats only if the paramedics don't have to do anything.

→ More replies (20)

1

u/Sweet_Water_8459 18h ago

I think they’re more concerned about the cost of the life flight. And they are more concerned that in this country many people including children don’t have access to medical care and/or insurance. But yet many dogs do.

1

u/NoAdvertising2 13h ago

Actually under the affordable care act. Which used to be Obama care anyone that doesnt have money can get insurance thru it. I used to have amazing Insurance and then I lost my job after getting a hip replacement and struggled to get a new job. I signed up for instance thru affordable care act and I dont pay anything for insurance right now. My 2 year old is also on it and its free. I just got a good job again thankfully and will be back under company insurance in 3 months.

Again im not saying that American insurance is amazing and they take care of everyone. I know American Insurance is a big joke and scam. I hate my goverment I think everyone is corrupt. The only point on me commenting was to say thay yes a human would be life flighted if the reason was bad enough.

And on the note of not having insurance there are alot of programs out there thay help people without insurance. Especially for big hospital cost. I would know I have had to use these programs many times growing up beacuse I never had Insurance

1

u/sukablaat69 15h ago

How much would that cost? it’s free in most of communist Europe..

You are even covered by other European countries I many cases..

1

u/NoAdvertising2 13h ago

The question wasn't about insurance. I responded beacuse people said humans would not be life flighted but a dog would. That statement is i correct. Everyone would be life flighted to a hospital if they needed it. Now how much it would cost is a whole different story. But on that topic most insurance programs have emergency travel cost covered if the Injury absolutely required it. But again my point on posting is not about it insurance it was about the fact that everyone would be medi flighted to a hospital if they needed it

1

u/sukablaat69 13h ago

No my question was simply how much would that cost?

I googled it anywhere from 15k to 80k wow that’s crazy!!

In most of communist Europe free healthcare is a basic human right lol

1

u/NoAdvertising2 12h ago

Yes its a joke what stuff cost in this country. But most insurance companies would cover it if it was a medical necessity for that person to go. And if you dont have insurance there are alot of programs that will help. Even most hospitals have money put away to help people. But yes at the end of the day American health Insurance and all the cost are a joke

•

u/BubbaBigJake 11h ago

And that American would be personally obligated to pay for the service at a cost that ranges from $25,000 to $125,000 for seemingly no reason.

•

u/NoAdvertising2 10h ago

Yes you are 100 percent correct.

2

u/TryPlenty4914 23h ago

what if an actual human emergency were to happen while that helicopter was taking a dog to an emergency vet that for some crazy reason has a helipad. Imagine telling a family their loved one died because they were in line behind a police dog for the helicopter and had to wait.

2

u/World-of-Potatoes 22h ago

"What if this super niche scenario happened". I mean what if all the helicopters available were picking up other humans and someone else died because they were being used? Imagine telling that family their family member died because he was in line behind another person. Does that really sound any better to a family experiencing loss? I'm just not pretending one life matters more than another. We can use animals for whatever reasons we want but can't treat them with them with the same respect every living creature deserves. And that right there is why we are the most entitled and least deserving of all species, because that's how our general population is.

1

u/PickleballEnvy 22h ago

I think the point is that if an ambulance is called for your toddler at preschool - you get a really large bill that insurance doesn't typically pay even if you have insurance.

1

u/Mannimal13 23h ago

Lol this is why wealth inequality is so bad....just keep printing money for stupid stuff genius

4

u/World-of-Potatoes 23h ago

what's stupid to you is not stupid to others. Plus, many of us have met way more pups deserving of life saving treatment than people

1

u/Mannimal13 22h ago

Let's just do it for all animals then, why the hell not. This is why democracy is fucking stupid, just too many morons out there

2

u/InternalAd1397 22h ago

We do dipshit. We used helicopters to fly horses out of canyons after they've been injured, we've used helicopters to transport wildlife like elk and grizzlies. Y'all act like we've got all of 5 helicopters in the entire country.

u/CantaloupeShort7311 1d ago

In Colorado, we have helicopters that routinely pluck dumb people off of mountains they shouldnt have been climbing in the first place, AND they never even get charged for the search and rescue teams.

35

u/Yggdrasil- 1d ago

As they shouldn't. Money should never factor into someone's decision whether or not to call for rescue. I'd rather 10 dumb fucks get rescued for free than 1 person die on the mountain because they were scared a medevac would send them into bankruptcy.

•

u/MammothBallerina 1h ago

Squid games fr. “Should I test my chances of survival here in the remote wilderness, or put myself and my family into debt by asking for help”

I guess in the olden days without emergency services, you would just be sentenced to death in that scenario.

But in modern times with all of our technology, does someone really deserve to die because they did not have enough money??

•

u/BubbaBigJake 11h ago

The cost, however, should factor in to whether or not they engage in such extreme outdoor adventures.

•

u/Yggdrasil- 8h ago

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge advocate for wilderness preparedness and hate that people have become so brazen about it in the social media age. But the fact is that people will end up stranded and in need of rescue, and they should be rescued regardless of the circumstances that led to them ending up there. Nobody deserves to die alone and scared in the wilderness, even if they're an unprepared dumbass.

2

u/callmesandycohen 23h ago

Why should they? Every middle aged man with a decent salary and 4-runner here is “volunteer search & rescue.” How else will all the transplants know who the real mountain-man is?

•

u/Dizzy-Historian9278 3h ago

I was born in Steamboat - ski patrol is largely volunteers so it's almost never part of the medical bill. My grandparents were both in ski patrol for yeeeaaaars

20

u/Motor-Cranberry-1092 1d ago

American people get life flights every day.

4

u/MizStazya 23h ago

Do tax payers pay for that, or do I?

3

u/Slickity 14h ago

Both lol. That's how bad the system is.

2

u/licorice_whip 1d ago

Not for broken legs on a highway they don’t.

4

u/Hour_Apartment_5150 1d ago

They found out the legs were broken after dumbass lol.

You think maybe they didn’t know what kind of spinal and internal injuries the dog had? You can’t ask a dog what’s wrong moron hahaha

•

I've never seen them call a helicopter for some guy or girl they just shot 15 times

•

u/MuchWow81 7h ago

2

u/NoAdvertising2 1d ago

Um if its a bad enough injury 100 percent a human would get a life flight.

2

u/EconomicsTiny447 14h ago

These comments are annoying the hell out of me. THIS IS WORKERS COMP. Understand what you and your employers taxes are paying!!! Should this happen to you, you as well WOULD NOT PAY. Good lord.

4

u/zackks 1d ago

Theres always money in the banana stand for the reich

10

u/Renevatio5 1d ago

I feel this so much. Totally agreed. I love dogs, whatever, but me and any of my friends can’t afford healthcare and our tax dollars pay for a medical helicopter for a dogs broken leg?

14

u/Nonstopshooter21 1d ago

Yep and if you fell off a bridge at work youd also most likely get life flighted somewhere covered by your employer. That helicopter ride and surgery is way cheaper than a new trained police dog.

13

u/Bolmac 1d ago

When I was on the side of the road with two broken femurs and three fractured vertebrae I got an ambulance. Routine orthopedic injuries don’t get helicopters, that is incredibly wasteful. And he called for the helicopter before he even saw the dog and knew the extent of its injuries.

3

u/incapablepotato 1d ago

It depends how far you are from a trauma hospital. If there is heavy traffic, mechanism of injury and extent of injuries. If you are were close to a trauma hospital and traffic was fine. The ambulance is faster all day.

8

u/jtj5002 1d ago

Falling off and overpass isn't routine orthopedic injuries lol. That's an airlift to a level I trauma center everytime if it's available and you aren't dead.

2

u/Nonstopshooter21 1d ago

Yeah and I got life flighted from a dirt bike crash because the nearest hospital was an hour drive. Location matters and so does being able to communicate issues.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Kilos6 1d ago

LOL your insurance isnt covering a life flight off for 2 broke legs.

9

u/el_americano 1d ago

it will if you start barking

5

u/Hour_Apartment_5150 1d ago

How would they know the dog only had two broken legs after falling 100 feet? They asking it? lol

1

u/Nonstopshooter21 1d ago

AT work. Literally would be under your employers insurance. The dog is working. Also yeah youd get life flighted if you fell off a bridge with the very high chance of internal bleeding.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Mallow1512 1d ago

that made me curious, how much money will it cost to train a new dog?

3

u/Nonstopshooter21 1d ago

It depends on the dog and what it's trained for obviously but most fully trained dogs run about 100k invested from start to finish

1

u/InspectorPipes 1d ago

How much extra $ to train it to NOT jump off an overpass?

1

u/Nonstopshooter21 1d ago

Probably need a dog trained for bridges only and not jumping objects to chase scents...

→ More replies (2)

0

u/grauhoundnostalgia 1d ago

Not for two broken legs and a broken jaw! Nobody’s getting airlifted for that, but a dog did?

1

u/Nonstopshooter21 1d ago

Ah yes because the dog can communicate that and you can just tell the dog doesn't have internal bleeding.

2

u/incapablepotato 1d ago

He’s a working dog. So he’s paying for insurance too.

-1

u/Slightly-Drunk 1d ago

I bet if someone spent 50k on you theyd rather pay medical costs than another 50k + time to train your replacement, too

7

u/AlcibiadesTheCat 1d ago

I spent $50k on my bachelors degree.

So not only do dogs get free healthcare, they also get free education.

Woof.

1

u/licorice_whip 1d ago

You mean they’d rather have us taxpayers pay the medical costs.

1

u/Slightly-Drunk 1d ago

Yes, they'd rather use less of their budget that is funded from taxpayer money.

I feel like everyone is missing the point that they are choosing the cheaper alternative so save money.

Nobody is going to just say 'oh well' and let 50k + worth of investment die and spend even more to replace it.

6

u/Greedy-Being6456 1d ago

The dog is more valuable than some humans. Gif related.

2

u/LimitedWard 1d ago

You can get the evac, you just will die later under piles of medical debt.

2

u/Infinite-Condition41 1d ago

Airlifted for broken bones?

What a crock of hooey.

You're literally driving a police cruiser. Take the damn dog to the vet. Fuck! Use the lights and siren if you want to!

2

u/Hour_Apartment_5150 1d ago

Anyone can get a medical evacuation by chopper dumbass lol

11

u/MuchWow81 1d ago

Who pays for it genius

0

u/Hour_Apartment_5150 1d ago

I don’t know and you don’t know either lol.

If I had to guess the department’s budget, emergency grants, and department write off.

3

u/licorice_whip 1d ago

Calling folks genius and then pretending like you don’t know taxpayers cover that expense, genius.

4

u/Reedabook64 1d ago

Yeah, if you want a $30k - $100k bill.

2

u/Hour_Apartment_5150 1d ago

If you’re in a position where you need a medevac, they likely ain’t asking you if you’re ok with the bill beforehand lol

1

u/incapablepotato 1d ago

Wtf? Traumahawk is somewhere around 14-16k. Still insanely expensive. Were did you get that number?

1

u/ComprehensiveDoubt55 1d ago

All I know is that the life flight paramedic that I know thought that an epidemiologist was a skin doctor.

Just let me fucking die at that point.

0

u/OkSand3986 1d ago

They are technically an officer. Your tax dollars pay for those dogs and if you knew how much they cost then maybe they'd be worth saving. I dont think you'd be able to put an animal down yourself...

6

u/Hazard0usH1ppy 1d ago edited 1d ago

Doesn't everything you just said aside from the officer part apply to most people in America? Your tax dollars train people every day (public school), if you break down how much that costs, maybe they'd be worth saving. I don't think you'd be able to put a animal (which humans are) down yourself...

Or is the officer thing that makes this situation more important?

1

u/CT_7 1d ago

Most Florida Counties use Chevy Tahoes as it's police vehicle with it"s 14mpgs as well. So wasteful.

4

u/MuchWow81 1d ago

Americans can get healthcare. Most are too busy being useless on social media to research that programs and options out there. That said, this dog is more useful and functionally intelligent than the average human citizen; it should be better treatment.

1

u/xeno0153 1d ago

The subtitle was wrong. He says "the dog's on I-80 right now, underneath the fly-over." I used to work Fire/Rescue 911 and rule 1 was "ambulances are for humans only!" I thought it was odd that training really pushed that on us, but the department wanted that to be crystal clear.

3

u/guts-n-gummies 1d ago

They... Have a police car right there. Normal people have to drive their dogs to the vet they can too

1

u/Tapp_ 1d ago

If it makes you feel better, you get to pay for it

1

u/incapablepotato 1d ago

Yea anybody needing airlift will get it. We just did it today for someone with a really bad fall and needing transport to a trauma hawk that wasn’t close. They had the bird ready to go before even getting to the call.

1

u/Snugg_Bugg 1d ago

Well they don't have to pay for it, taxpayers do so what the hell do they care lol

1

u/SugarFut 1d ago

Paid by our tax dollars 🥴

1

u/Tallulah1149 1d ago

My SO got a helicopter ride when he had a heart attack and he didn't have health insurance. He needed better care than our little hospital could give him. The bill was $24,000, He applied for medicaid and Life Flight accepted what medicaid would cover.

1

u/Pepto_Glizmol 23h ago

Anyone can get medical evac by helicopter, moron.

1

u/NoClock 23h ago

If the American people could pull their heads out of their asses long enough to vote then maybe they’d have better healthcare like most of the rest of the civilized world.

1

u/WeCantBothBeMe 23h ago

Don’t worry the doggo will get a 200k bill in the mail.

1

u/EffectMotor8914 23h ago

Well, you have no idea what you are talking about with respect to America.

1

u/I-like_dorgs 23h ago

??? If they bring out the chopper your ass is going in it regardless.

1

u/Qender 23h ago

When I was a kid and my dog got bit by a giant rattlesnake next to our back door, my dad called 911 and they refused to send paramedics for my dog.

That dog potentially saved me or my sister's life, and my dad instead had to drive him across the valley to find the one vet that had any antivenom left. (apparently he arrived the the waiting room was just full of dogs and cats with snakebites.)

Civilians shouldn't get worse medical care than Police officers. Why do police dogs get an airlift but they wouldn't send paramedics for my dog!

The dog survived BTW, but he was always a little slower after that. Also, the fire department came for the snake but said it was too big and they called animal control and they said it was too big for them and it took like 3 guys with those lassos to catch it. I swear it was like 10 feet long or something and like 1 foot from our backyard where my sister and I go out.

1

u/Bloody_Mabel 22h ago

If a suspect tries to injure or kill a police dog, they are charged with assault or attempted murder of a police officer 🤷‍♂️.

1

u/AdaptaBill24 19h ago

To be fair, that dog is probably of more use than most people. The handler on the other hand should be fired and also slapped across the face for being an absolute moron.

1

u/Affectionate-Rip5654 17h ago

Atleast tax payers get to pay the bill for it!!! /s

1

u/Redactosaurusrex501 16h ago

My family member still owes 68k for a life flight 8 years ago. Can his dog pay it off? This is ridiculous. Put the dog in the back seat and start driving. Next up SCOTUS will rule dogs and cats can form a super PAC and give to the campaign of their choice.

1

u/chicoesperto 16h ago

The difference is: if you are American and needed a helicopter ride you need to pay, if it’s a dog, well you need to pay as well because you are a taxpayer.

1

u/rachel_berry 15h ago

wow you're missing the point here

1

u/GregFromStateFarm 12h ago

Most Americans don’t dedicate and give their lives to serving the country.

1

Laws and regulations often treat pet animals better than humans.

Which Americans can’t get basic healthcare?

•

The ones who cant afford it. And the ones lacking access. Pregnant women in some states who need an abortion. It's not a simple problem. Some of these people are self employed and make too much to qualify for subsidies, but not enough to pay for the actual services on top of the $20,000-$30,000 per year premiums. Some live in places where the clinics they could afford to visit have closed. Some find themselves struggling to get care because their conditions are politicized and doctors are legally barred from giving them what they need or they risk losing their license, fines, or even legal prosecution.

So your answer is the vast majority of Americans have access to basic healthcare then?

Most Americans are not paying anywhere near 20k a year in premiums

How many humans could have gotten care for what that little helicopter ride cost? We're paying for it in addition to unaffordable human healthcare. Just because not everyone pays those outrageous amounts doesnt mean that what they pay is affordable to them. I don't think that "the vast majority" find their healthcare costs affordable.

That dog works his tail off and has good coverage through work. What’s the problem here?

Society has become so misanthropic that a dog's life is worth more than a human's. That's just the world we live in nowadays. Dogs in schools, dogs in restaurants, dogs in grocery stores.
