I just wanted a hot dog My new reality
I have IBS and therefore have to severly limit my diet. Mind you half the stuff on this list is food I really enjoy eating, or is virtually included in everything 🙃 the universe said you WILL eat that boiled chicken and rice and you WILL LIKE IT

Ahhhh yes welcome to the dietary restriction game, where the rules don't make any sense and you're gonna shit yourself anyway.
It sucks to adjust to but feeling better and not living in the bathroom becomes worth it

as someone who has IBS id rather be miserable on my toilet then be miserable in my food. don't let it control you. yea the diet should be followed most of the time but enjoy yourself once and a while. were here for a good time not a long time. (unless your immortal in which case start seeking your death now)

I just posted basically the opposite view. My life was stuck in the bathroom, so I stopped eating completely for a while.
Now that I know what triggers me, I have a fuller life. Even if it means a lot of rice and meat.

u/yodacat24 1h ago
Yeah it definitely depends on the person! I’d honestly rather shit myself more than limit my food- but as a chef it would kinda be MUCH rougher trying to navigate than the average IBS’r 😅. We need to taste our stuff to be sure it’s good- and I’m just so passionate about food and good tasting things I cannot do it. Good for you for having the resolve though and taking care of yourself in the way that helps you the most :)

Try peppermint oil in enteric coated capsules (enteric coating is the important bit, as it means the capsule doesn't dissolve in your stomach, where the stomach acid will denature the peppermint oil, and it will only dissolve once it reaches your intestine)! I've found my trigger to be primarily fructan, and most of the time I am completely fructan free, but these capsules mean I can go out to restaurants or to friends houses and don't have to watch what I eat.
They say they're effective after about half an hour, but I find they don't really work for me unless I take them at least an hour before I eat onion, garlic, wheat etc. I also find they don't work very well when I have my period (they usually stop working effectively a couple of days before things fully start), but for the rest of the month, they've been amazing - I ate phó a few days ago loaded with onion, and didn't have a single issue. Without the peppermint oil capsules, I would have had everything I'd eaten being forcefully expelled from my body within 20 minutes from eating that much onion...
I was super sceptical the first time I tried them and was preparing myself for an evening spent on the loo, but was utterly shocked at how well they worked!
I find I need two capsules (works out to about 0.5ml of peppermint oil) about an hour before I eat, and I'll get no symptoms, but different people have different needs, so you might need more or less. If I have it too much (I went on holiday recently and was using them for every meal for a week), I do get a bit of constipation, but I'd still much prefer that to the alternative!

Fair if that's what works for you, but personally I've had such horrible flare ups to the point where I genuinely felt like starving myself, or would have rather thrown up my entire stomach just to stop feeling the pain. As much as it sucks to have to micromanage my diet, it's that or suffer constantly.
31
u/flygirlmadison 1h ago edited 35m ago
As a Crohn's person just slowly reintroduce stuff. And if there is something you love eat when you are off the next day. Most of the times it's fine, I found after getting my meds good, Its really just stress that makes me flare up.

u/Technical-Highway-69 1h ago
Stick to the diet for awhile like awhile and then after like 6 weeks or something you can start eating normal foods like twice a week or so at least thats what my doctor told me.
•
u/SweetOkashi 49m ago
Honestly, I had to cut back to almost nothing for a while after my first major flare, but after a while I was able to reintroduce things, slowly and on a case by case basis. I am now at the point where I can periodically say “eff it” and just eat whatever.

Depends on the person but generally: upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation, watery stools, accidents (yes, in your pants), and more rarely malnutrition. You can also get severe pain from gas and bloating. Bloating can be extreme, like 2+ inches in my case. So your pants stop fitting 😢 Not following the diet is also linked to bacteria overgrowth but isn't a direct cause according to my doctor.
•
u/Murky_Rent_3590 56m ago
Wait, 2 inches is extreme? I can bloat 8+
→ More replies (2)•
u/fightmydemonswithme 53m ago
My doctor said that my 2-4 inch expansion was extreme, but that said I don't actually know. But I was only a 30inch waist at the time so maybe that contributes? I've gone as far as 6 but that was with 8/10 pain. I've got stomach stretch marks too from the rapid bloating.
•
u/Murky_Rent_3590 11m ago
I’m gonna go TMI here. That is your warning to not read. I poop like once a week/ every 2 weeks. Not joking or exaggerating. I once went 6 weeks, with 2 tiny poops. I set a timer at that point and gave myself 24 more hours and I was going to the hospital. I hadn’t eaten in a few days because there was no room and I looked 5/6 months pregnant. I ended up going a few hours later and holy shit the pain. Sweating, chills keening in pain naked on the tile floor. First colonoscopy I took all the meds and had a first shift bartending at a new place. I had no idea how fast and brutal the meds were supposed to be and when I inevitably over shared I was wondering why people were looking at me like I was nuts. lol. Made it through the shift with no problems. Last colonoscopy I had I took all the meds the night before. My appt was 2pm. Noon rolls around and I still didn’t go. Took the whole dose again. Barely went in time for my new appt 24 hours later. But everything looks fine so I get the diagnosis of IBS with constipation. But my waist can regularly go from a 26/27- 36. Hell, it’s 33 and I just pooped. I’m bloated as fuck rn.

Are you saying these are consequences of unmanaged IBS, or are you thinking of IBD? Not trying to be argumentative, I just want to understand and learn more. For context, my wife has IBS and chooses not to follow a special diet for the most part; and I have diagnosed autoimmune issues that also affect my digestion but my docs can't seem to give me definitive answers about food so I manage my diet on my own based on my symptoms (aka how frequent and/or extreme is the pooping)

Wait so my undiagnosed joint pain could be related to certain foods causing horrible cramping diarrhea and shitting blood if I eat certain foods? That's gonna make all of this so much more difficult. I was willing to put up with occasional severe discomfort intestinal cramps and bloody diarrhea. The joint pain though is making walking and even driving(applying pressure on the gas or brake) difficult sometimes if changing my diar might help I might have to actually try.
14
u/WavyLady 1h ago
Big time! If you have bone and joint pain, get checked for celiac or Hashimoto's
Sore bones are my biggest signed I've been glutened, and it lasts for ages.
3
u/DhampireHEK 1h ago
This one big time. Taking Benadryl/prednisone can help with some of the joint inflammation if it's bad enough.
8
u/tocahontas77 1h ago
Yeah you need to see a digestive specialist. In the meantime, try cutting down on gluten, dairy, and sugar. They're known to cause inflammation.
3
u/fightmydemonswithme 1h ago
Is it fresh blood (bright red) or old blood (black and sticky)? Fresh blood can also be hemorrhoids. I'd seriously consider a doctor either way. Blood loss is not healthy and you are prone to infections anytime your stool mixes with blood.
3
u/Im_Just_A_Tourist 1h ago
Always fresh sometimes dark blood clots mixed in I've had multiple colonoscopy and endoscopy minor hemroids internal that I'm sure the severe gut twisting cramps don't help stay intact.
3
u/fightmydemonswithme 1h ago
I'm sorry you are going through that. I was having similar issues and after 6 weeks on the restricted diet they went away. I slowly reintroduced 1 food per week and waited to see how I reacted.
•
u/Im_Just_A_Tourist 56m ago
I've thought about that and doing a digestive reset through long fasting that I've heard of but it's hard to find the time when you have family and they like what they like so making something separate just for you is cost prohibitive.

IBS? I dated a girl with Ulcerative Collitis, and the initial "rule out" list was about this bad, until we worked through all the various triggers. This is crazy!
6
u/Pictrus 1h ago
I have Ulcerative Colitis and there are different circumstances. Avoiding "trigger foods" while your in remission is helpful but if you're flaring it doesn't matter what you eat. You could try avoiding anything and it won't matter. It's not like avoiding certain foods will stop you from flaring. You'll still be going to the washroom 40 to 50 times a day because your mostly capping out blood and mucus.

u/Infinite-Cloud-7937 2h ago edited 2h ago
IBS is a default diagnosis when they couldn't find anything else. My son's gastro doc said people can be at risk simply from stress. Husband got diagnosed with IBS years ago - but doc told him he was allergic to these same exact foods (yes, allergic). Then years later, he got undiagnosed by a different doctor; they said he never had it.

u/WavyLady 1h ago
I had 'ibs' that was triggered by 'anxiety' for 5+ years
It was celiac. It just took one doctor marking down a box on a blood test.

Yep. My first diagnosis was IBS and I’ve since been diagnosed with a whole list of other stuff, but the IBS in particular seems to have actually been MCAS. I still have to avoid some foods, but Cromolyn has helped make it so maybe 5% of foods cause issues instead of all of them.
•
u/Ok_Meet_5968 58m ago
Yeah turns out my IBS was mostly the effects of endometriosis. Once I had that under control my GI issues are mostly gone. Stress and eating like a garbage gremlin on vacation can occasionally cause me problems still, but that’s maybe twice a year for a couple of days and not nearly as bad as it was before.

18
u/BadRabiesJudger 1h ago
That's the best suggestion. Like certain oils or greasy meats in large quantities ends with me near dying on the toilet. But a few key factors is not eating large american quantities of food reallllly helps. If i do eat heavy cheese products or oily foods don't do it twice in a row and possibly if i can not the next day either. It's been a journey and the one thing that has helped me a million miles is culturelle probiotic. I buy it in bulk at cosco and it has stopped like 90% of my gagging from bad foods. I have to really push it to get there and if i take a second knowing im gonna eat something i shouldn't it helps a little.
5
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 1h ago
This is me, too! I have IBS, FODMAP intolerance, and developed lactose intolerance at 45 (this has been the hardest; I love dairy!). Once I figured out what my limits were, as long as I don’t go crazy eating stuff I shouldn’t, and take antacids/cimetidine and lactose supplements before, I do ok. (OP, you might look into enzyme supplements, too, to see if that can help.) And like you said, space out the frequency of eating problematic foods.
Sometimes I hit a patch of Sustained Angry Stomach, and OTC Nexium (esomeprazole) doubled up sets me straight again after just a couple of days.
OP, don’t give up hope!! You can quite likely figure out a way to not do without the food you love forever.

I also have IBS and for a while my diet was like yours, but I've been able to narrow my trigger foods to the point that I generally only avoid meat besides seafood, whole nuts (flours, butter, and milk is fine), and most dairy.
Give it some time, see if a probiotic help, and eat lots of soluble fiber. It'll get better :).
11
u/lorithepuffin 1h ago
Do an elimination diet and figure out which of these are actually your problem. It won’t be all of them. There are a lot of guides online in how to conduct an elimination diet. Once you figure it out it’s actually super freeing. And you feel better all the time and less bloat. And then you can ever eat small amounts of the worst offenders. It’s a cumulative problem. If you eat mostly the stuff that you find doesn’t bother you then there’s just less irritation overall in your system and it can handle the really rough stuff.
Once you get a handle on it it’s actually a good thing. You feel better and more in control.

I try not to limit myself too much, because life's too short to be eating boiled chicken and rice for every meal.
Are these foods you've found you're sensitive to? Because not everyone reacts the same to every potential trigger food. Try cutting one at a time out of your diet before reintroducing it, and you should get a pretty good idea of an exact exclusion list.
For myself, I get bad cramps/upset stomach from overdoing onions, peppers, and anything too spicy (which is a shame because I love hot food!). I can tolerate in small amounts but that's about it. Haven't touched eggs in years, because I end up unintentionally gas bombing anyone around me for the next 48 hours.

I’m with you on the: caffeine, alcohol, coffee, and meat. We are at the state fair today with our young daughter (and for two more days) and so far so good! I had a roasted corn on the cob, an Arepa, one sip of my husband’s Painkiller at the Whisky Hut, and a lick of my daughter’s frozen custard.
So even though I’m not eating or drinking a lot of the fair treats, a sip or a bible won’t put me in a flare and I can “experience” it all!
There is an Ethiopian vegan food truck here that does killer tacos. Those were safe last year so I’ll visit again while we are here.

As someone who was originally diagnosed with IBS, I would highly encourage you to find a functional medicine doctor and do some advanced stool testing. Standard docs don’t do that kind of testing and insurance doesn’t cover it. IBS is a catch all for when they can’t figure out what’s wrong with you.
But I actually had some bacteria overgrowth, infections, parasites, and needed some gut healing. My diet used to be very restrictive, and now I can pretty much eat anything.
8
u/foxed-and-dogeared 1h ago
I was also originally diagnosed with IBS. My gastro retired and his replacement wanted to run some more tests to rule out some other possibilities. We also did a trial of colestipol, as testing for bile acid salt malabsorption isn’t readily available in the US. Turned my gut around overnight.
•

15
u/High-spinal 1h ago
To anyone reading this, please, please do not follow this advice. Functional medicine is a pseudoscience. Just because traditional doctors don’t always have the answers doesn’t mean you should listen to snake oil salesmen who pretend they do.

I won't try to minimize how much this sucks, but there are still lots of delicious foods you can eat! Vegan meat substitutes have got so much better in the last decade and are actually delicious in their own right. And even non dairy "cheese" has become more than acceptable, if missing out on cheese is your biggest thing.
Also, rotisserie chicken is gonna be your easy savior. Sounds like you can still make chicken and rice bowls and you can do that a million different easy ways.

Did you ever have a deep fried coffee rubbed Diet Dr Pepper marinated steak sandwich with a green olive aioli with and a pecan side salad with some lay ridges chips, and wash it down with an ice cold beer before?

You could also marinate the steak in beer and save the diet Dr Pepper for after if you want to mix it up

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis last year. My flare-ups are clear liquids only.
It sucks; we can make it.

I'm no doctor, but it sounds like you need to do some form of elimination diet to figure out what actually irritates you.

Honestly, if you're creative with what you cook, you could actually make some bangin food

Sounds like my diet for my stage IV kidney disease 😒

How are beans NOT on the list. Wouldn’t that irritate IBS?

u/Reasonable--Care 1h ago
So far I haven't had a problem with beans or legumes. Beans and rice are actually one of my go-to meals, and I love putting edamame in everything (especially ramen).

Ok if so many people have this severe reactions- self included- damn, it has to be the food degradation and the effects- it’s telling our bodies not to eat it!

If you can figure out the specific thing(s) you’re intolerant of that might help expand your dietary horizons a bit. For my daughter it’s alliums especially garlic that makes her super sick. It still sucks because she’s vegetarian and nearly EVERYTHING has garlic or alliums but at least she can have dairy, bread etc.

Also have a newly restrictive diet. It's no fair, but I am trying to enjoy getting creative with new ingredients and foods.
One of my new favorites is green plantains/green bananas. They are anti-inflammatory so I highly recommend them. Low sugar, low starch.

I read online that some lactose intolerant people eat huge amount of cheese and kinda forces their gut to learn to tolerate. Can't you do the same?
6
u/Reasonable--Care 1h ago
Unfortunately not. It's not lactose intolerance, even lactose free milk has an effect on me. Believe me if I could just get over it I would, but it's been years of it at this point that I just realized it wasn't worth fighting it. Cutting it out completely is easier.

Just wanted to say sorry you have to deal with this. It truly sucks. Probably more than mildly infuriating.

A lot of this stuff is high fat food items. Have you looked into anything like EPI or bile acid malapsorption? My parter struggled with GI distress including diarrhea until he started colestipol to bind up excess bile acids. Now he lives a mostly normal life. IBS can be a catch all term meaning "I have no idea what's wrong", so I would certainly dig a bit further, OP and follow with a GI clinic if you're not already.

What about poop transplant? They take a (clean) poop sample from a healthy (I guess compatible) person with a better/healthy gut bacteria and implant it (shove it) in you - done by medical professionals mind you, not Greg’s basement/garage

Cannibalism it is, then, I guess. Good luck in your new life as a Wendigo or maybe Vampire.

I really hope you can find some alternatives that help you. Being suddenly limited sounds like a pain.

u/voxpopper 1h ago
Check to see if it is PI-IBS you have, if so you can knock it out with a stong regimen of specific antibiotics. For some reason many phyicians don't check for it or don't even realize that there is a 'cure' for it.

What about seasonings?! Can you still have seasonings?!?!?

My list is nowhere near that bad. But I got IBD and am in a similar boat. If you want to talk message me.
It took me a long time to grieve for losing some of these foods. And like a loved one dying it’s not a “now it’s done forever” process. I still get hit with sorrow over it. Acknowledge, accept, move forward when you are ready.

As someone with gastroparesis (and likely IBS per GI) I do sympathize. I will say that there are a LOT of options now for dairy that is lactose free (if that's the issue) or completely dairy free but still taste great.
I highly recommend looking into fodmap friendly products. They make foods specifically for people who have troublesome digestive systems. There are a lot of really great substitutes right now out there thankfully! I hope you are able to find a diet that you enjoy and also helps relieve some your stomach issues <3

Welcome to the life. It sucks. My first year with the diagnosis was a roller coaster of sorrow and acceptance. I’ve finally made it to a place of comfort. Checkout Fodmap and IBS reddits. They’re helpful places to get tips. Sucks you cannot have caffeine. But you might find that some of these things on the list do not actually trigger you.
Also, I don’t know why mayo is on the list, but if it’s because of garlic and onion, Helmann’s is safe! Good luck.

I got a fodmap enzymes powder to take before I eat. My symptoms improve when I remember to take it. It’s like $75 but I’m uncomfortable tummy wise at work.

May I interest you in a boiled potato? Maybe some liquid potato to numb the pain?

u/karebearjedi 1h ago
I can't have onions or celery in any amount and they are in EV-ER-Y-THING. No dairy, no high fat anything, eggs are good if they're super fresh, and no fake sugar. I miss being able to sit down at any restaurant and just order anything that looked interesting. On the bright side, though I lost 80 pounds....

Ibs? Might as well add Mangoes, onions, anything with high fructose corn syrup (realistically, everyone should avoid hfcs) as well. Those can all be triggers too.
I hated giving up root beer, mangoes, and some of my other favorite foods. But they can cause me severe pain that comes seemingly out of nowhere.

I'm shocked raw veggies are not on here
Try to lose weight when your body only digests pasta and pizza apparently
Salads I can practically put back on the plate after "digesting"
And I love salads ... Have since I was a kid

Water is on the menu. It's the only thing on the menu now.
