There’s been a lot of (understandable) dooming on holy paladin, with the math showing that our healing is just not up to par with other classes.
My fellow crusaders, I’m here to let you in on a secret: You don’t want to be overpowered in the beta, that puts a target on your classes head. See priest penance for a clear example. Being underpowered means there’s only one direction to go from here: Up. Balance changes are coming.
Now, knowing that holy paladins clearly have an abundance of power budget for the devs to play with, do we want them to just pump up the numbers of flash of light so that we can heal as efficiently as everyone else?
I’d rather them lean into the class fantasy of the warrior priest we’re meant to be, give me a reason to jump into the fray.
- Holy Strike heals allies around me in melee range, or even gives a small absorb shield
Holy strike on its own is an incredibly boring and unimpactful ability. The Prot tree has a holy strike talent modifier for damage reduction, Ret has a holy strike talent modifier for more damage, the holy tree is missing this entirely.
- Make consecration give a small aoe heal.
We already have a talent in the holy tree called Consecrated Ground, increasing holy damage taken by enemies in consecration. This is great for shockadins, but gives little reason for holy paladins to use it. Make that talent a choice node, shockadins choose the damage, healers choose the healing.
I’m not saying redesign the entire class to be a strictly melee healer, that’s not realistic at this point, and I respect the Forever devs intention to keep the classes overall play style familiar to how it ended up being played in 2004.
But there are small, self contained changes that can easily be made that will give holy paladins more meaningful reasons to jump into the action like their plate armor and battle hammers suggest they should.
These are just suggestions, the take away here is that holy paladins are in a position where we have an abundance of power budget for buffs to our healing, and I for one would love to see the devs get more creative then just “flash of light heals X% more.”
Edit: I’d like to add that this is quite literally what the original devs intended the class to be played like in 2003. The design was clear, the execution was flawed. So if you think it’s a retail idea, talk to the 2003 devs.
