absolutely ... switched to a shitty flip phone and haven't looked back.

I do reddit on my pc for 30 mins a day... i got 8 mins left.

7

u/Ecstatic-Laugh Aug 15 '26

Ok so wanting to do this. However, I am spaz when in public, ie need my phone for directions/uber/looking up a restaurant/navigating life. How do you deal with that?

5

u/Trbochckn Aug 16 '26

I'm 45... I still use gps that came with my car tho.

If I'm hungry I drive down the street pick a restaurant

Any research needed is usually done before I leave the house.

And everybody else in the world has a smartphone so if I really want something looked up I just ask.

10

u/rohm418 Aug 16 '26

You just...talk to strangers? GTFO

I started hiding my social apps too, because I am lazy and it made it more "work", to go on it. Eventually, I deleted FB all together because it just made me depressed more than anything. Not even counting all the weird political crap.

I was just talking about this with my mom [earliest Gen X if that matters], and we both basically agreed that we don’t want people to have unfettered access to us anymore. She retired a few years ago and just lost all remaining patience for other people’s bullshit, and I’ve been working in customer service for much of my adult life, so… yeah, there are like maybe 3 people who can contact me at all times. One of them birthed me, one married me, and the other is my best friend. Everyone else more or less gets me when they get me.

100

u/No-Consideration-891 Aug 15 '26

Working in customer service probably skyrocketed you to your mom's level of "no fucks to give anymore". Absolutely brutal industry.

26

u/ghostyspice Aug 15 '26

It really is. I found a niche in an industry I really enjoy now, so I’m much happier than I had been prior, but people are still people no matter where they are. For better or worse 😅

As a last Gen X, I concur. My phone wont ring for anyone not directly related to me in some way. Spammers and constant political ads have made the cellphone nearly useless. Thankfully they added a feature that includes texts, so that hole has been patched too.

I am happy that people in my life "oh ya swing by anytime buddy" .

I am not happy that anyone 'call' me on my phone anytime.

Note the difference. They will show up to express care or a need. I am happy for both. It takes time and effort to come to my doorstep.

Phone calls are different. It only takes mutual time. They can bother me anytime the want if they are going to call. with very little cost to them.

I had Sublime's Caress Me Down set as my default ringback tone the 1 time my grandparents tried to call my cellphone. They were none-to-pleased to hear ”she pulled out my mushroom tip/ and when it came out it went drip drip drip/ I didn't know she had the G. I. Joe kung fu grip"

My dad got ripped a new one by his dad and I was no longer allowed to have ringback tones

I felt so cool setting some screamo as my ringback tone, mostly because it annoyed my parents.

11

u/VenusSmurf Aug 15 '26

This is what I do now.

My family complains that my phone is always on silent. In one ear and out the other, because this is obviously intentional. They can text me like normal people. I don't need sound.

Every once in a while, though, we'll get together, and they'll nag enough that I turn the sound back on. They usually last maybe an hour or two before they beg me to shut it down again, because my phone goes off constantly, and both notifications and ring are a screaming goat.

Also intentional.

9

I had a ringtone and a Ringback tone/hold music. It was RHCP but the thing expired and defaulted to classical music. I was either too lazy or just didn't know how to turn it off and eventually Verizon just ended that service.

Also I have my phone on do not disturb out of habit. You only answer so many telemarketer calls before you figure out the important calls just go to voicemail!

7

u/Yossarian-Bonaparte Millennial Aug 14 '26

I remember when I first discovered those… and didn’t consider how they added up.

So a couple months into having a new phone, my dad lost his mind because he opened the phone bill and I had downloaded $200 in ring tones.

My phone ringing used to be exciting. It was friends and crushes. Now it’s bills, telemarketers, scams, and work emails I don’t actually need to be CCd on.

213

u/PM_YOUR__BUBBLE_BUTT Aug 15 '26

The two feelings of excitement back in the day that are still unmatched:

- messages from your friends new screen names on AIM

  • the first texts from unknown numbers when people got their first cell phone

Runner ups would probably be when we no longer had to wait til after 9pm to make calls to people, and when we didn’t have to get off the computer so the phone worked. That feels like just yesterday but also an archaic time looking back. Jesus I’m feeling old today.

I drive a cab. The other day this girl in her 20s who was like a freaking social media character; she had that no-heat curl thing in her hair and a Stanley cup and everything. She was nice and all, but she played videos on her phone with the volume up the whole hour drive and while I wasn't really annoyed because it wasn't super loud I still would never do that.

But I thought, hey, maybe her ear buds are in her suitcase or whatever, nbd.

She gets out and I realize she's had whole entire headphones in her hand the whole time.

Again, it wasn't the worst, she didn't have the volume on high. But it was weird.

(And just for context, I'm a woman and while people have described me as many things, "sketchy" and "threatening" have never been one of them, so I don't think it was a safety thing.)

u/EmotionalRiver1033 Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

I just got back from a trip to Italy and Croatia and I found these places to have a shitload of people who will just scroll their phones at full blast. Drives me insane.

Edit: I’m from Canada btw. Here if someone is scrolling loud I at least feel comfortable telling them to shut up, but I definitely come across it faaaar less at home.

51

u/CycadelicSparkles Aug 15 '26

Yeah, generally in the US it's not considered polite, at least I don't think it is. People do it, but I don't ever see anyone defending it.

54

u/A_Little_Sprig Aug 15 '26

When I was in the ER I had to repeatedly ask a Gen X woman to stop blasting her phone. One of the other people in the room told ME I was being rude!

33

u/CycadelicSparkles Aug 15 '26

I'm sure ER staff has better things to be doing but I do feel like there should be a rule against that.

34

u/A_Little_Sprig Aug 15 '26

I did eventually get the staff involved. I desperately needed to sleep and was crammed in a room with like 8 other people.

14

u/Gatorae Xennial Aug 15 '26

You hate it because people shouldn't make unnecessary noises. A random cough, sigh, chair squeak, etc? Fine, that is normal. Repetitive electronic sounds to let you know you successfully typed something?? Open your fucking eyes and look at your screen to see the letters you put there, that's the only feedback you need! I sure as hell don't need to hear it five seats away.

My favorite is when they “fire off” a text or email and go to triumphantly send it like BAM!👇 (as if the person on the other end caught any of this attitude) and completely fail. Even better is when they like BAM! BAM! BAM! thier finger into the phone like violence will fix it.

16

And then on top of that they panic when it rings and say HELLO? HELLO??? all angrily because they haven't gotten past the weirdness of being called when they're outside of the home and "I can never hit these buttons I hit something and something else pops up I don't know about this damn phone"

16

u/ThatOtherOtherMan Aug 14 '26

That drives me crazy. I worked in tech support in the late 90s and the CEO of the company would constantly double or triple open things because he wouldn't pay attention to what he was clicking on or how many times he clicked. I see it with my 83 year old mom now because she gets impatient with her phone and keeps tapping the screen when it doesn't do exactly what she wants instantly.

13

u/gobnyd Aug 15 '26

The sad thing is I've learned it's an emotional regulation issue. My mom, also in her '80s, it's so frustrated every time she has to do anything on her phone and complains and keeps hitting it. Then when I sit down and show her how to do it with like the gentle parenting voice, she calms right down and can simply press with normal force once and do what she needs to do.

Where did I learn this shit? I certainly didn't learn from her lol I was raised by a woman I now know was going through perimenopause (I.e. fury) during my formative years.

I guess we're all just reparenting our parents at this point

My mom will look at the damn text and try to read it via preview while her ridiculously long notification is still playing. And forget it if MULTIPLE notifications come in one after another. If you dont turn that shit off!

When she upgraded phones a few months ago, I told her if she selects that notification sound again, I would throw her phone out the window lol.

And she answers the phone every time like theres a 50/50 chance her best friend is calling to invite her over for choclate cake.

She'll cut off in person conversations, pause a movie, etc to pick up the landline on the 2nd ring.

It drives me crazy.

I ask her "when is the last time someone you personally know called you on the landline?" (This is a lady who has had a mobile phone since they came in a bag and you had to put a magnetic attena on the roof of your car)

Now when I go over there for visits, first thing, I go into the bedroom and take a phone off the hook to buy us all some peace and she's none the wiser.

Edit: I wasn’t implying this is an Apple exclusive feature, that’s just the world experience I’m speaking from. I realize many other smart watches have this feature. Besides sleep tracking, it’s probably my favorite feature

I liked the old Tiles because you could ring your phone instantly and vice versa. Air Tag doesn't let you instantly ring like that and won't make any sound until you or another device gets super close, like a few feet away.

Samsung watches also do the same or I would never find where my phone moved itself to this time.

10

u/Justwondering__ Aug 15 '26

I don't have have smartwatch so I just have to walk around saying Ok Google until I hear it or if I'm at home I just tell Google to call it.

I sometimes miss the days when the phone was attached to the wall with a cord.

33

u/LeoDeLarge Aug 14 '26

Or at the very least waiting until 9pm for the “free minutes” on my sidekick

15

u/chaos841 Aug 14 '26

I remember my first cell phone and I didn’t know they charged by the text. Next thing I knew I was staring at a $2000 bill. Thankfully the phone company took pity on me since I was 16 and didn’t know. Then they agreed to turn off the text feature so people couldn’t continue to text me nonstop.

18

u/NOLAgold13 Aug 14 '26

Could you imagine a company doing that today?

18

u/chaos841 Aug 14 '26

No. Today I would be in collection on that bill rather than thing reducing it to $100

As another elder millennial, for me I have call sounds on because I almost never get calls unless it's something important. My siblings and friends SMS, or message me through some chat apps. I have SMS on soundless notifications, chats on no notifications (because I check the apps when it makes sense to), and as said I have phone calls set to do the ringtone thing. If I suddenly started to often get calls I would probably set it to vibrate. I aggressively disallow notifications from apps in general, I really hate my phone making noises and notifications without damn good reason because that's too disruptive to me.

23

u/saison257 Xennial Aug 14 '26

My Android has "modes" that I can set with specific settings depending on where I am. I live alone, so at home, my phone automatically turns my ringtone on. At work and at certain other places, it's automatically set to vibrate only. I love not having to think about changing the ring setting everytime I go somewhere

22

u/HobNobHonkey Aug 15 '26

Thank god it’s not just me then

I need to hear when someone is trying to reach me. My wife has hers on silent most of the time and constantly misses calls. Drives me crazy.

10

u/algernaaan Zillennial Aug 15 '26

If my phone doesn’t make a loud noise at me, I’m going to forget it exists.

8

u/lurkingbob Aug 15 '26

Mute the texts, block the spam, and let everything ring through. I'm on call all the time, but my wife can't be bothered to turn on her ringer. I call her like, once a year, and she doesn't answer. Rage.

9

u/ChuushaHime Aug 15 '26

Agree, I keep my phone's ringer and vibrate on.

Apps, however, get virtually zero privileges, for both notifications and audio. If you send me a video to watch on my phone then that thing better have subtitles or closed captioning or whatever folks are calling it because the volume is staying at 0.

7

u/DoctorPaige Aug 15 '26

Yeah, my phone has the "Ring Ring Ring, Ring Ring Ring, Phone Call, Phone Call!" From Pokemon's like... 3rd episode. I didn't go through the hassle of finding it ripped from the episode but without the background music just to turn it off.

7

u/VenusAmari Aug 14 '26

My ringtone is still one of those goofy custom ringtones from them apps. It's a parody of Still Alive from the Portal game.

13

u/YouAreAPyrate Aug 14 '26

I recently upgraded from an older Galaxy phone only to find out they changed the physical hardware type for vibrations and it's super weak now. I was missing pretty much all calls and notification until last week when I fixed it by making an obnoxiously long custom vibration pattern.

Even millennials who have kids? My phone never goes to silent because I never know when one of my kids might need to contact me. My oldest doesn’t live here, and sometimes, the teenager will text me from his bedroom when he’s feeling down, rather than coming to talk to me.

38

u/bitsybear1727 Aug 14 '26

This is what I'm thinking. I have 3 kids and I'll be damned if I'm not answering when they need me.

16

u/MainusEventus Aug 14 '26

Yes I have two kids. They don’t have phones yet, but I configured my dnd to allow alerts from their schools (and my wife’s phone). Otherwise everything else gets silenced.

u/ninjakitty117 Aug 14 '26

Me too. I realized I do a better job of putting my phone down when the volume is on. If it's on silent, I'm constantly pulling it out to check if I have any messages. And after I check, then do the social media circle (reddit, email, Instagram, etc) and end up down a rabbit hole.

But with the volume on, I can put it down and focus on other things. Counterintuitive, but it works.

Vibrate more than completely silent. Though either is fine since I just use my watch to locate my phone if I misplace it. I genuinely get pissed off when I accidentally turn my volume on. Lol.

57

u/SQLCloud Aug 14 '26

It's just... the more old I'm , the more I realize how fake the world can be and I enjoy being alone and away from hypocrites and people that only look for you just to ask something from you... Is this growing up for us?

10

Crazy to me too. Most of the time my wife's phone is on silent and I can't get ahold of her when I need to. I'm like come on.

47

u/REC_HLTH Aug 14 '26

It’s absolutely a thing. Unless I am actively waiting for a super important call I can’t miss, I have no sounds or vibrate on for notifications of any kind. With very few exceptions, my phone has been on silent for at least 5+ years, and the 5 or so years before that on silent much of the time but not always.

I do have an Apple Watch that taps my wrist with incoming calls and GPS turns, so that’s good enough for me. I have most of the other notifications turned off for my watch though.

I accomplish selective silence in a more round about way. I have all of my app notifications off and text message alerts hidden. Badges only. And phone calls can come through - from 6am-10pm. I sound like a strict factory, with odd business hours and questionable practices lol

If it’s on vibrate I feel like I’m always “waiting” for it to vibrate and it’s always in the back of my mind. Having it on silent helps me self-regulate a little better and I just check it when I have the chance.
