My phone remains silent as protest until we get back custom ringtones. I want to hear Akon - Mr. Lonely for at least 3 seconds before I answer phone calls ✊
I have used the "Come Little Children" song for Hocus Pocus for years.
Sidenote: typing this out, I realize I may need to change said ringtone b/c I don't think it aged as well as I thought it did. I absolutely love the movie.
Oh nice choice! Mine has been Odeka de Chocobo from Final Fantasy Whatever for at least a dozen years and probably will continue to be so until the day I die.
I wouldn't say it's "easy" on iPhone.
A couple years ago I created a ringtone for my Windows Phone by taking a music track and editing it in Audacity to start a bit later, then I could just put the mp3 on the phone and set it as ringtone - the phone would automatically truncate the track down to 30 seconds.
For iPhone, I had to first download the Garage Band app and truncate the track down to 30 seconds manually, then export it as a ring tone. You can't create custom ringtones from music tracks without the app at all, to my knowledge.
Yeah. Have an iPhone for work, it's significantly more effort than Android. Even if you've already made it short enough with Audacity you still need to open it with Garage Band to make it into a ringtone
My text tone is Navi yelling HEY LISTEN. The1% of the time I’m not on silent and I get a text everyone jumps.
My wife’s in Sara’s Song also from Zelda.
Mine is Gourmet Race from Kirby lol. Millennial but keep my ringtone on just so I can hear whenever someone calls. Granted I'm fully remote so it also never bothers anyone
Seriously, it's not rocket science. It's trivial under Android (although to be fair Android is extremely varied -- my experience is with vanilla Android on a Pixel). Like any MP3 can be set as a ringtone.
It's not much harder on iPhone. Garageband (the free app from Apple) can export ringtones. Import any MP3 you want and export the ringtone.
Anyone complaining about not being able to set a custom ringtone in 2026 hasn't spent 2 minutes Googling the problem. This has been my ringtone for the past 5 years (despite being on silent 99% of the time unless I'm expecting an urgent incoming call).
Oh and I'm sure the next technical complaint is "well how do you extract audio from a streaming video???" It's called yt-dlp and you would know that if you Googled the question. I know Google has absolutely gone to shit but the LLMs will tell you the same thing if you ask them.
Mine is the codec from Metal Gear Solid. I work in a noisy environment and need something i can here. My notification sound is Sheika Slate tracker beep from Breath of the Wild
Whenever I get a new phone, I download Zedge, download my default ringtones (Navi's "Hey! LIsten!" for texts and the Zelda boss music for calls), delete the app, and then put my phone on silent.
It's too late now. My heart still hurts from losing that feature for so long. In the time between custom ringtones to adding ringtones to smartphones was too long (roughly 2008 - 2017 when Google made it easy). During that decade of boring ringtones, I have since adjusted to the life of a silent phone. My phone will forever be set to silent and vibrate.
(P.s. I hope my light-hearted sarcasm comes through in my response. Yes, I understand we can add custom ringtones, but it was just more fun when I was younger)
On my phone there's a folder for ringtones. You can just drop any mp3 file into that folder and it'll appear as an option when setting your ringtone. It's easier to do if you connect your phone to a computer, but you can use the file explorer on your phone, too.
Mine was the 8bit pixel of the Some Cut beat by scrappy. Man you got the memories flooding back lmao. I had a non folding Motorola cellphone and I was jamming lmao
Yes, but only if there's a ring back tone where I can force anyone who dare call me to listen to the song clip of my choosing. I want people to regret calling instead of texting!!
I just remembered the ringback? tones, I think they were called. Got could force someone to listen to whatever. Crazy frog for unknown numbers, for sure haha
I haven't used anything other than custom ringtones and notification sounds since the Nokia days, but I never hear them since my phone is always on vibrate.
I'm a sound designer and musician, and make my own ringtones. Nothing creative; but things to differentiate one from another.
For instance, I have two gmail accounts. My preferred one--where I've decided in the last decade that my more important emails move to--is Samsung's "Good News" ringtone. My secondary one is the Good News tone, but I have it play the notes in the opposite order.
Hotmail, being from waaaaaaaay back in the MSN Messenger days, has the old email notification from Messenger.
My SO and I talk often through FB Messenger, mainly because I often go from PC to phone when chatting. I gave her ringtone a third "ding" so I know it's her messaging me.
If I was doing this kind of stuff 20 years ago, I totally would have tried to sell some creative ringtones; but this works really well for me.
Having a song as a ringtone ruins that song forever for me. I'd never subject one of my favorite songs, or even a decent song for that matter, to that.
There's an app for that or you can do it online and download it as a hard saved ringtone. So even if you switched phones it'd come up in the default ringtones section.
I'm 60 and know how to use a program like Audacity to capture and edit a sound track, copy it to my phone and use it for ringtone or notifications.
I currently have the music to Halo Reach as my ringtone and Windy Miller's windmill sound as my notification (you need to be my age and English to know what that is).

And to think, we use to pay for custom ringtones…
