Even millennials who have kids? My phone never goes to silent because I never know when one of my kids might need to contact me. My oldest doesn’t live here, and sometimes, the teenager will text me from his bedroom when he’s feeling down, rather than coming to talk to me.
Yes I have two kids. They don’t have phones yet, but I configured my dnd to allow alerts from their schools (and my wife’s phone). Otherwise everything else gets silenced.
I can feel the vibration just fine, turning down the volume doesn't interfere with my ability to pick up. If my phone isn't physically touching me, it's close enough that I can both hear the vibration and see the screen light up.
Yep I set up DND so everyone is silent except family. If my kid's at one of their bestie's houses that whole group is allowed to bypass my DND otherwise I'm not answering a thing.
The statement doesn’t ring true to me. The only people I know who keep their ringers off are my kids and their friends. Maybe it’s the younger millennials. I still talk to my friends on the phone.
Yep, I only turned my ringer back on after I had kids. I need to know if school, daycare, or now that they’re older they themselves are trying to reach me.
I keep mine on vibrate. I have kids, but I don’t remember to switch volume on and off when I'm in person at work. I don't want it being obnoxiously loud in meetings at work.
Gen X here. This is me. Aged parents, adult kids, their kids. they all ring and expect I will pick up. Any time.
Especially cute is when they ring, I just miss answering and call back, and they don't answer because they "have their phone on silent".
And then, depite you telling them to use Signal (works on phone and laptop, does groups, sends photos full sized), they'll find the most inconvenient messaging app.
I keep seeing this, but if my kids needed to reach me from a number I don’t know, or the school calls from a line I’ve never seen before, or anything like that, it won’t ring.
I’ve also gotten significantly less attached to my phone, so half the time it’s in another room, so I’d rather hear it ring.
I have kids and yes. My teen who lives at home is comfortable coming to find me if we are home together and can call or text me or someone else if they are out, and my college kid who lives away has individuals closer to her to help if there is an emergency. (I know my first call in an emergency wouldn’t be my out-of-state parent either.) My husband and I both look at our phones enough that we won’t miss things for long.
Also, and more importantly, I’m never the only person who can help either of them, and that works well for us.
A lot of people have it set to ring only if the same person calls you more than twice in a row. I used to have that set up and I may again eventually. Now, I only have it on if there is an expected call or likelihood someone will need to call for a particular reason, but not an everyday just-in-case thing for me.
I do have an Apple Watch that taps my wrist for incoming calls. I don’t wear it at night though.
Yeah. I have to manage my time
and my attention or I will go insane. And my phone goes away very often at home. Not being immediately responsive is not the same thing as being unavailable. They'll be fine. Hey sorry I missed your call, what's up?
I have two kids but silent all the way. I pick my phone up often enough to remain reachable by those who go through my phone filters. And they can call their dad as well.
I ALWAYS had my phone on silent and couldn't understand anyone not having the same.
My son was born a couple of months ago and I now have my ringtone on permanently. I don't want to be at work doing work things while my wife is trying to reach me for something important!
As an anxious millennial with kids, my phone only goes on silent for meetings, appointments etc.
(I also have a teen who texts when she's in her room and not feeling good)
Same here. My kids know that if they need or want to get in touch I me I am there immediately. Not whenever I get around to checking my phone. Maybe it will mean something someday and maybe it won't but there will never be a question for them whether or not they can reach me.
