I'm slightly vexed Taxi driver wearing noise cancelling headphones while driving in the city
Look I’m PMSing so I’m admittedly in a very nit picky time of my life. But. Don’t love weaving in and out of traffic in a major city while the taxi driver has noice cancelling headphones on. The sound is loud enough I can hear whatever (moderately funny) comedy show he’s listening to in the backseat. This is ill advised, yes?
ETA thanks to everyone who taught me about transparent mode today :)
ETA2 : Okay, I’m the asshole, comments have shown me there’s lots that could be going on with the driver to make him need to use these and there’s way he could do so safely. Mea culpa. That’ll teach me to knee jerk react.

90% of Ubers I am in the driver has earbuds in and is on a call the entire car ride, quietly whispering to the other person. My question is who are these people talking to for hours all day?

Group calls. Like 10 of them in a discord. My Indian work maye says its a common thing back home and is prevalent in immigrants coz they miss their home and their native language
Seems perfectly reasonable to me but I don't like people using their phone while operating a car so if their eyes stay on the road im usually chill with it. Idk how people drive with an ear bud in though. I feel like I can't see without my ears

So now I gotta ask because I genuinely dont know, are deaf people not allowed to drive? I dont think ive ever thought about it
Edit: the answer is YES THEY CAN DRIVE (thank you for pointing out my dumbass use of the English language haha) I also looked up laws in my state about headphones and apparantly here you can only wear them over ONE ear lol

Speaking only for my country, but they are. They can drive without any restriction, don't have to wear hearing aids of any sort and it's common knowledge that they sign behind the wheel. They are used to rely on their other senses more.

Yes, deaf people can drive, but they're also fairly well adapted to navigating the world with reduced senses.
Similarly, a one-eyed person can drive but you wouldn't expect someone to drive around with one eye closed.
Actively removing your situational awareness is stupid.
56
u/DannyDevitosComb 8h ago
One eyed driver here, I just have an endorsement on my license that's states I MUST have my mirrors (I mean everyone does but y'know)

Nice, if I ever get pulled over for not having a mirror I'll say it's fine because I have both eyes. Checkmate, police.

Ironically depends on your state. Like Texas where I came from you only needed two mirror if your vehicle was tinted and one of they had to be the drivers and passenger’s side mirror. If you weren’t tinted you technically just would need the drivers side one.

When I worked in fast food, I regularly had customers in my drive thru who were deaf. I would greet them over the speaker not knowing they were deaf and they would honk to let me know they had already paid through our app and were about to pull around to the window. Saved them the hassle of trying to communicate with someone who doesn't know ASL (me).
5
u/creatyvechaos 8h ago
I was born deaf (underdeveloped eardrums) but could hear okayish by the time I was 7. In that time period I learned ASL, but never had to use it again after that. I can still vaguely "picture" the signs (quotes because aphantasia, it's more.....instinctually knowing I'm thinking of it?? Hard to explain) but I can't piece them together fluidly, and my other language learning also interfers with the structure and grammar of ASL. I currently have a deaf coworker, so I've been picking up on sign language again, but....It does make me wish it was a required course at least in middle school.
Whoever said "you'll never forget ASL because it's muscle memory" was not aware that muscle memory can atrophy through lack of use
2

u/GroundMeet 9h ago
They are allowed, but some states require more/bigger mirrors to enhance their visibility. Aside from that they don’t treat deaf any differently than hearing unless you’re attempting to get a CDL
10
u/caelynnsveneers 8h ago
I feel like deaf people probably are trained to use a lot more visual cues to drive safely. Idk maybe cuz I’m a scared driver I would want to be able to hear the roads.

I guess in theory they might be better at getting by without hearing. And it could just be a bit of an exception because they don't have the option whereas the rest of us do.

I had a deaf Uber driver once. Had a little sign essentially saying “feel free to make phone calls or listen to your music as loud as you want”.
10
u/meowxinfinity 9h ago
Definitely allowed to drive. I am deaf and just use visual the most. Sound isn’t necessary for driving, imo.
10
u/Penguin_Arse 8h ago
They are allowed to drive, it's only a slightly bigger danger to drive without hearing, if you have the ability to hear you should use it.
However I always drive with so loud music that I can't hear shit anyway
2
u/im_wudini 8h ago
in NJ, it's 100% legal to wear earbuds while driving. In both ears. Likely a holdover from when handsfree was more important.

Some people really aren't going to like this comment but it's entirely possible the driver has the same condition my sister does: pain hyperacusis, where loud or even normal volume sounds can cause a range of symptoms including actual pain. Noise cancelling headphones do not fully deafen you and most of them have variable settings that allow you to reduce the pitch or frequency of incoming sounds so that they are quieter but still audible.
The smart move here would have been to ask the driver why they were wearing headphones and to get out of the vehicle if they were listening to music with them.
36
u/BiteInfamous 8h ago
I actually wish I could pin this. Thanks for teaching me something new, I should know better by now than to knee jerk react —> judge —> post

I was looking for this comment in this thread. Reddit posts are so filled with people wanting to rage and not looking for legit reasons.
For example, I don't have hyperacusis but I do have a bad sensitivity to sound. Whether it's prolonged or loud or chaotic... it chips away at me mentally. Wearing headphones or earbuds with transparency mode has improved my life so much in the last decade. I used to have to wear ear plugs in crowded locations or plane flights. Now, I can interact like a normal person and survive a day's interaction.

Is this is the right time to mention I am disappointed by my premium headphones lack of ability to block noise? On the subway I feel like the background noise is competing with my audiobook or music. However I don't blast music.
6
u/mymotherthemountain 8h ago
Yes, I hate my Bose Quiet Comforts. The noise canceling blocks nothing.
3
u/Eqmuraj 6h ago
Are they broken? I bought a pair of QC Ultras for a long international flight last year, and the difference between Quiet and immersion vs aware is massive.
2
u/mymotherthemountain 6h ago
No idea, I can hear the difference between the modes, but none seem to actually block/cancel sound. I can hear keyboard typing in all modes. I feel like they block sound purely by the volume of the music.
3
u/costinmatei98 4h ago
You are 100% doing something wrong / don't have them on your head properly.
I have had my Bose QC35 IIs and QC Ultras for quite a bit now and they are absolutely amazing at blocking out everything. To a point where my friend was shouting at me from my doorway and I was 5 meters away completely unaware.
Though it does work A LOT better when you are playing music / a podcast. Just having them on doesn't work that amazingly, but they still block out most repetitive sounds.

Noise cancelling works by recording the outside world, then flipping the audio 180 deg out of phase and playing it back which results in destructive cancellation with the original sound. Because this processing happens in real time, there is some latency, and so it really only works well for very stable, regular sounds like an air conditioner or something. That's why it sucks at things like cancelling voices, loud clanging, or any other unpredictable, irregular noises.
→ More replies (1)7
u/yrthegood1staken 7h ago
For those learning from this comment, this is specifically about "active" noise canceling. Passive noise canceling happens through insulation and sound-dampening materials (like your traditional ear plugs or workshop earmuffs).

28
u/sarkzar 9h ago
You aren't getting extra stimuli if you're deaf. You're navigating the world as you usually do, and studies show deaf people are able to compensate well enough by paying attention visually. But yeah, I don't see how this is much different than blasting music.

So the way I see it (and I could be wrong) there's a difference between someone who is hard of hearing, who can drive. They're aware they are hare of hearing and probably are hopefully very aware.
Listening to NC headphones is a distration, due to the fact that you're listening to something that's not on the road and can be distracted with what's going on.

I have a disability that's about as debilitating as being deaf. I learned to drive with it and have a lot of habits I taught myself.
I think there is a pretty massive difference between driving wirh something you've dealt wirh 24/7 your entire existence and willfully disabling one of your senses while driving lol

And yes, comparing noise cancelling headphones, something that literally cancels as much outside noise as possible, is as close as people with full hearing will get in their daily lives to deafness.
It's pretty common sense to make that comparispn, but you can take it even further. Put in some industrial foam earplugs and shooting ear muffs.
Congratulations, you are now experiencing deafness.
"But how dare you compare that to a disability!!!!".
Stop being so soft. It's embarrassing. People have made observations like this since the dawn of man to explain and show symptoms of disabilities.

8
u/Plastic-Mess5760 8h ago
We do not know why they wear headphones and what effects it has. I would ask the driver if they can drive safely with it on.
If I can sit here and imagine all the reasons why someone would wear headphones include:
- Transparency mode is on, so all can be heard. Not every headphone is noise canceling only.
- They need it for some reason: covers an ear injury, reduce noise that they are sensitive to, being able to play music for guests that they don’t want to hear, or to hear something that doesn’t bother guests (some guests can select quiet ride, and if driver needs some noise, then this headphone makes sense)
Obviously, they can abuse this and actually just noise canceling only and jamming music like crazy. If that’s against the law, then bring that up. If that’s not against the law and they can drive safely, then I don’t see issue.
I don’t assume malicious intent from service workers. This is their livelihood and they are not messing around with it

I just feel like I’m losing my mind.
You're aware that deaf people drive, right? What do you need to hear while driving? A car horn? (which is loud enough that you'll probably easily hear it anyway). What else could you possibly need to hear? Cars are literally built to cancel as much external noise as possible. People listen to music in their cars loud enough to drown out most surrounding noise.
What is the difference here, other than unregulated emotional reactions?

Deaf drivers might drive more carefully in general.
People with hearing might drive worse when they block one of their senses. It can make a huge difference in specific situations that you don't know that you'll be in.
People get in bad situations just by blocking their hearing when they are walking.

Those are XM6s, $500 headphones with next level noise cancelling, OR a great transparency mode. Yes it looks crazy that he's wearing them while driving, but I know some people that wear them in transparency because it helps boost sounds they may not hear without them as they have critical hearing loss.
