I'm slightly vexed Taxi driver wearing noise cancelling headphones while driving in the city

Post image

Look I’m PMSing so I’m admittedly in a very nit picky time of my life. But. Don’t love weaving in and out of traffic in a major city while the taxi driver has noice cancelling headphones on. The sound is loud enough I can hear whatever (moderately funny) comedy show he’s listening to in the backseat. This is ill advised, yes?

ETA thanks to everyone who taught me about transparent mode today :)

ETA2 : Okay, I’m the asshole, comments have shown me there’s lots that could be going on with the driver to make him need to use these and there’s way he could do so safely. Mea culpa. That’ll teach me to knee jerk react.

in most places, the cops will pull you over for wearing headphones while driving, as you can't hear the traffic sounds that you need to hear while driving. That's basically distracted driving

What if you’re deaf? Will taking your headphones off help?

You aren't getting extra stimuli if you're deaf. You're navigating the world as you usually do, and studies show deaf people are able to compensate well enough by paying attention visually. But yeah, I don't see how this is much different than blasting music.

Soooo deaf person wearing earmuffs because it’s cold… or someone with hearing wearing earmuffs god forbid… do you know how ridiculous that is? Impossible to judge whether or not someone is wearing headphones and effectively losing their hearing

Exactly. You don’t have speakers up against your ear canceling out all other sounds. Blasting your speakers in your car is equally as unsafe, IMO.

Pretty sure if you’re deaf and have a license you can prove it.

so what, you suggest banning deaf people from driving?

the behavior can be unnecessarily risky (and therefore illegal) without being so dangerous that we ban an entire group of people from being able to drive

You seem to have misunderstood me… and just so you’re aware, it USED to be illegal for deaf people to drive. It isn’t now. Just like it isn’t illegal to drive with headphones on.

it is illegal to drive with headphones on in a lot of places. i don’t know where OP is, but it is illegal in new york, for example

edit: looking closely at the photo, it looks like OP may be in washington dc, where it is also illegal to drive with headphones on

Deaf people can still drive.

It's literally against the law for me to drive my dump truck without hearing protection, I wear earplugs and over ear muffs.

Hearing is not a critical sense to driving. It’s important, it’s useful, but not critical.
