Trump is a manchild with a massive ego to boot.

20

u/BigBananaBerries 8d ago

& a lot of this recent madness is because everyone around him is telling him he can do whatever he wants. That's not a good place when he's already been a narcissistic fool.

People have the memory of a goldfish. He had a horrible first term and tanked the economy. Biden fixed it and had the "envy of the world" after covid. Trump fucked it up again. But people forgot how much he fucked up the first time around. Ridiculous

u/Ancient_Popcorn Ohio 8d ago

They had to vote for Trump. They couldn’t fathom voting for a woman or another black person, and Kamala was both.

538

u/pikachu191 8d ago edited 7d ago

People forgot how unserious they were. When they voted for Biden to fix Trump's mess, they also voted for Republicans in the undercards of congressmen and Senators in that same election. This meant nothing could get done. Republicans were determined to filibuster anything because Democrats didn't have the 60 seats needed to overcome a filibuster. They did everything they could to prevent any accounting for Trump: refusing to participate in the Jan 6 commission, rationalizing every acquittal they made on Trump on technicalities and blaming Democrats. Even as they were cowering in the House chamber on that day with only a handful of Secret Service agents (for then VP Pence's protection) as a last line of defense from the angry MAGA mob.

Manchin and Sinema proved to be opportunists who watered down any Democratic legislation for their own special interests, since Biden had to have their votes to get anything done. Meanwhile Democrats wanted Biden out (there were stories that the establishment never wanted him in the first place), even while admitting he did a good job getting the US to recover from covid-19, but still too old (Bernie Sanders is older, and so is Nancy Pelosi). Biden got mocked for being old and falling off his bike (without breaking any ribs or other bones) and voters decided let's bring back the con artist of a reality TV host who's only 3 years younger and uses a golf cart playing golf (real matches have the competitors walk the entirety of the course).

People look at me weird when I say democrats functionally lost 2020 even while winning.

2020 should have been a blowout election season for dems. Between the botched Covid response, economy problems, general chaos, and mounting legal issues for the Trump admin, any competent opposition should have won the White House and both chambers with a super majority, it should have been the blowout of the century.

Sure, statistically the electoral college victory was pretty solidly in bidens favor, but somehow, after all of that, 12 million more people came out to vote for Trump than in 2016. By no means was it a landslide in presidential election history. Not to mention, dems spent almost double the amount of campaign money on Biden than Trump got from republicans and they still only won by slim margins.

On top of that, the senate was effectively “won” by the 1 vote the VP gets. The dems lost 14 seats in the house and just clung to a majority, and dems lost another governor seat giving republicans a 2 seat lead.

Dems came to fight with a loaded m16 against an opponent bleeding out with a shiv and they still got sliced and diced and won by the slimmest margins.

I hate saying this but the people really made their voices heard that cycle. They weren’t happy with trump, but they really didn’t want to alter course either.

56

u/100LimeJuice 8d ago

Biden's electoral college victory was not pretty solid. As NPR's Domenico Montanaro has put it, "just 44,000 votes in Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin separated Biden and Trump from a tie in the Electoral College." I blame the apathetic non-voters equally to the worst of the Trump voters. I know a few people who didn't vote, despite them claiming to hate Trump, because they didn't see the point. I tried to explain that we know exactly how many people will vote for Trump, his base isn't growing, by not voting you are basically voting for Trump. They called me stupid and said that Trump will lose. I don't talk to them anymore.

Biden fixed it and had the "envy of the world" after covid.

Trump figured out that all he had to do was sit on the sidelines and yell "Biden Grocery Prices!" often enough, that it hoodwinked just enough people, that he was able to scam his way back in. The more frustrating part is how few people recognized the transparent sham that was.

40

u/DadJokeBadJoke California 8d ago

No president has ever had his predecessor shit-talking him every single day of their presidency. The reason many thought Biden was doing bad was because Trump was saying it day in and day out regardless of how well things were doing.

A MILLION Americans died from COVID during his first term. I can't believe his supporters just brush that aside. A MILLION. Most of them lost friends and family members to the pandemic that he massively fucked up...because HE told them not to wear masks, not to heed quarantine and shutdown protocols, and later doubted the efficacy of a vaccine. HE HIMSELF nearly died from it.

He SHOULD be the last republican president. But he won't be, because people are stupid.

51

u/MoonBatsRule America 8d ago

A MILLION Americans died from COVID during his first term. I can't believe his supporters just brush that aside. A MILLION.

Most Trump supporters do not believe this to be true. They think that the numbers were fake, and that almost nobody died from COVID. Or they think that Fauci unleashed the disease to discredit Trump.

I had relatives who died from COVID. My MAGA relatives think that they merely died with COVID, and that COVID did not contribute to their deaths, because it was more mild than the common cold.

little did I know voters would just let them do both, that one senator or podcaster or ex-president could just say "they were FBI plants to make Trump look bad" and that was it, all is confused and forgiven

8

Republicans lie, lie, lie about how much they supported Bush. I've had Republicans I know say to my face they never liked Bush and didn't vote for him the 2nd time, because of Iraq, and it's a laughable lie. Kerry would have won in a landslide if even half of the Republicans who now disavow Bush hadn't actually voted for him.

23

u/cactus22minus1 California 8d ago

The definition of a good economy depends entirely on the segment of the population you’re looking at- for the Epstein class, a recession is like striking gold. You get to pay your workers less, you get to buy up tons of assets on the cheap. When you have record inflation and climbing rent, they’re making record profits.

What’s “good for business!!” Is terrible for the regular citizen in unregulated capitalism.

33

u/DrMobius0 8d ago

Biden fixed it and had the "envy of the world" after covid

Problem was, it wasn't fixed for regular people. Biden did excellent damage control, but it's not like things were suddenly good. The difference between the messaging and reality almost certainly contributed to people's disillusionment with Biden. You just can't say you're out of a hole when you're still waist deep.

This is coming from the party that claims that school teachers (who are already under-paid and in underfunded schools) are somehow doing 1-day transition surgeries on students without the parents' consent. Despite teachers regularly using their own salary just to stock their classrooms with pencils, books, and writing materials, apparently they have enough extra money to do surgeries in the school with technology that doesn't exist

I think he's mixing up electoral votes and supreme court justices. 12 is a very odd number for the EC, where the best solution is to remove the artificial cap of 538 so that each representative represents as close to equal populations as possible

American amnesia.

We somehow always convince ourselves that the next batch of republican candidates couldn’t possibly be worse than the ones prior.

Pretty much since Eisenhower, you get a steady decline. Reagan was insanely popular but isn’t credited enough for the killing of the middle class.

57

u/Nasty_Ned 8d ago

Eisenhower would be considered a flaming left wing lunatic (by the R establishment) if he was on the 2028 ballot.

19

u/Xtj8805 8d ago

Thats because he was never really a conservative, the republican party was out of power and desperate to win it back so they recruited Eisenhower. Ike then proceeded to appoint liberal and progressive judges, send in the Army to enforce desegregation, and warn the country about the dangers of the Military-Industrial complex, all while he reduced federal debt as percentage of GDP, expanded Social Security, raied the minimum wage, established the department of health, education, welfare, the civil rights act of 1957, built the interstate system, etc.

Looking at his record he definitely did a lot that the conservatives wanted and i wish he hadnt, but his progressive streak was enough to cause the entire right wing movememt to organize and is essentially why the federalist society has the power it does today. They wanted to be sure that no future republican president could find a conscience to do good thinks that make conservatives angry.

Still the last decent republican president. Imo the last good republican president was Teddy.

That’s because Republicans have been really good at propaganda for a long time. Democrats can’t message them selves out of a wet paper bag.

20

u/Beetlejuice_hero 8d ago

Not to let the Democrats off the hook but it’s a lot harder to campaign on:

“Public Policy can be highly beneficial to your life and here is my dry & detailed plan to enact the following changes”.

versus

“They’re coming for you! Transgenders, immigrants, Socialists/Communists/Marxists, Obama, AOC, Pelosi, George Soros, they’re gonna castrate your kids! They’re coming for you! Government sucks - elect us and we’ll prove it! They’re eating the dogs!“

Their base (save for the mega wealthy elites) is - demographically speaking - much dumber & less educated to begin with so the above psychotic fear mongering is highly effective. Think of the people who see & hear Tommy Tuberville and think “yeah he should be my Senator.”

Again, this is a heritage foundation problem not a trump problem.

Everything we are seeing today was planned and executed by executive order. The heritage foundation has been pushing this for over 30 years.

Even Sarah Palins tea party which is MAGA now. Was trying to push what we see today.

Trump is not smart enough for this. Lets put the blame on the correct people so they have consequences. Theyre using him as a scapegoat because hes at the end of his life and is easily manipulated. They want the focus on him.

Its their way out.

The heritage foundation must be brought down, prosecuted and labeled a religious terrorist organization as they have systematically wrote and executed an attack on the constitution and its people.

254

u/djanes376 Illinois 8d ago

Very much this. Trump is a vehicle for them to entrench their power, nothing more. They may even cringe at some of the stuff he is doing, but they can overlook it as long as they can push their agenda.

George W Bush said the same thing.

Amazingly, it's Republican leaders that underestimated how quickly the American people would forgive their fuck ups. George Bush destroyed the US economy, blew up the national debt, caused a massive housing crash where people lost their homes by the millions, and started a 20 year war in the middle east that resulted in the US leaving with nothing accomplished.

And yet 8 years later, the American people had completely forgotten about it and elected Trump, who started an unnecessary war in the middle east, blew up the national debt and tanked the US economy, again.

Looking forward to the next Republican starting another war and tanking the economy, again.

292

u/Miserable-Waltz-7724 8d ago

In their defense, during that 8 years a black guy tried to give them stimulus money and better healthcare. And the alternative to Trump was letting a woman also try to give them better healthcare. So they really didn't have a choice when you think about it.

So many Republican apologists in this thread. The situation we are in is what the Republican party has been working towards for decades. I'd hazard that they've been at it for longer than most people in here have been alive, myself included. There has never been a point in our lives where the Republican party wasn't aiming to disenfranchise us. If they never get a voice again, we are better off.

Posting some of the article here because he’s not saying it’s because he’ll become a dictator. He’s saying this because he’s fear-mongering.

We all know that fear works on the conservative base, and that many people believe that putting democrats in charge is literally worse than hitler. That’s where he’s striking here - fear.

“President Trump declared during a Monday political rally that he would “be the last Republican president” if Democrats clinch control of Congress and the White House in the next two elections.

“I will be the last Republican president because they will add about 12 more electoral votes,” Trump said in his speech.

“They’ll add four more senators. They’ll add 10 more congresspeople, approximately,” he continued. “They’re going to rig the Supreme Court through just a lot of people.”

The president added that Democrats want to raise the total number of justices on the high court to 23, adding 10 to the number that has been floated by party leaders.

“The real number that they dream of is 23,” Trump claimed during his speech. “They say 13. Who wants 13?”

True but these are very different times. The oligarchs and their white supremacist and evangelical underlings learned a lot in the 20th century. They created Fox News and the entire propaganda network to brainwash hundreds of millions.

Democrats are also historically unpopular. They’re seen as milquetoast and weak. I say this as a democratic voter myself. It will take an extremely charismatic leader or leaders to turn that image around. In the meantime, democrats will hopefully retake Congress this year but it wont be because they are popular. It’ll be because Trump is such a complete fuck up and corrupt authoritarian ghoul. Americans have the memory of a goldfish. I fully expect them to turn on democrats the second things haven’t magically gotten better within a few months of the new Congress.

18

u/oncestrong13 8d ago

The Democratic Party before the Great Depression and New Deal was racist and ineffective. New leadership and a new coalition changed all that. It can be done again.

While I hope the republican party falls into a black hole, I do not hope that we end up in a 1-party system. I am going to vote blue up and down my ticket because anyone who knowingly supports the republican party is either 1) dumb, 2) a coward, or 3) a bigoted fascist.

But that ultimately means that I have to accept whatever candidate wins the democratic primary. Meaning I can only support candidates who have the ability to navigate party politics. I want a legitimate choice again. At least when Mitt, GWB, and McCain ran, you could weigh their policies and character and have legitimate discourse over which candidate was better. There was room in those parties for compromise and debate. Now, the choice is merely "do you want America to be nazi germany or not?"

117

u/gob384 America 8d ago

If the Dems became a 'uni party' it would probably not last more than 2-4 election cycles.

Either it would split with the 'moderate/ corporate' Dems camp vs the 'progressive' camp or the GOP would regain prevalence in a generation or so like they did post FDR

54

u/DrocketX 8d ago edited 8d ago

There's absolutely no way it would take a generation. I remember after the 2008 election, there was discussion that Bush damaged the Republican party so badly that it would take decades for them to rebuild. Turns out it only took until 2010, when they made MASSIVE gains and took back the House.

Things now are completely different than they used to be, especially for Republicans. Part of that is Fox News, AM radio and other propaganda sources, that can keep their base motivated no matter what, part of it is how intertwined the party is with Christianity, but part of it is also the fact that the GOP has worked hard over the past several decades on the state and local level to control basically everything in a huge number of states. No matter how badly Trump fucks things up on the national level, the reality is that the Republican party isn't going to wind up in the wilds for a generation. They'll be back within 2 presidential elections, at the absolute outside. Realistically, probably one, when the unfortunate Democrat who takes Trump's place fails to solve every problem in the world within 3 days of taking office.

I hope that maga republicans go away forever.

I hope that we can get ranked choice voting passed nationally.

I hope that we can have a multiparty system and that the duopoly of Republican and Democrats ceases to exist. They, and first past the post, has done nothing but harm Americans since it's inception.

23

u/sbsb27 8d ago

6

u/Stunning-Chipmunk243 Michigan 8d ago

I agree, it's an antiquated system that should have ended long ago. Everything needs a complete overhaul - Voting, Age & term limits, insider trading, the Citizens United ruling, campaign finance, gerrymandering, etc. Time to pull the engine and fix this thing called democracy before it ends up in the junkyard

9

u/quell3245 8d ago

We really need to have at least 3 major parties represented in all branches of government, it can’t be our team vs your team anymore. Needs to be room for compromise and a more even balance of power.

34

u/mediocre_remnants North Carolina 8d ago

I wish. But what's going to happen is that the GOP will crash the economy, Democrats will take all 3 houses but without a supermajority, and they'll spend all of their time trying to fix all of the shit that Trump broke. Then by the time they're up for re-election, the GOP will freak out about how the Democrats raised taxes and are crushing small business and people will vote Republican again. By that point they'll inherit a healthy economy and proceed to destroy it.

I'm in my late 40s and have seen this happen like 3-4 times in my life.

The way the republican party is now is not fit to be a governing party. It has lost all it's principles and morals, and is just a hub for narcissistic self-serving, grift and deranged anti-democratic bigotry. It has to crash and burn. Hopefully, out of the ashes a moderate conservative party can rise.

The real problem is however that the political system in the US is completely corrupted. Citizens united needs to be repealed. You can't have a functioning political system when you have deranged billionaires putting hundreds of millions of dollars into political races. Another thing is that the US should be forced to join the ICC. The US should never be allowed to start another war without facing the consequences of their actions. The good will is long gone.
