I'd say W was likely correct. The current MAGA version of the GOP is nothing like his GOP.

We saw flashes of MAGA in the Sarah Palin crowd. The normalization of unconcealed, arms wide open stupidity in politics.

Palin lead to Trump. They couldn't win on McCain's Republican party anymore but they saw what her presence did for the campaign. She couldn't run as a woman obviously, Trump was the last great desperate try. It worked. And it damned them from ever going back to what they were.

This was always the GOP. Now they show you more openly. Nothing has changed.

There was also the Tea Party and Gamergate in the lead up. Let's not skip over those.

W killed more people than Trump. Him and his cabinet made a lot of money through the Iraq war. He brought back torture and military prisons for suspected terrorists/ supporters, (who didn’t receive trials).

The patriot act made it legal for the government to search citizens without cause. They could legally send citizens suspected of terrorism to Guantanamo bay, without even informing their family members.

George W Bush appointed Samuel Alito, and John Roberts to the Supreme Court. Two of the “heritage foundation” judges that were put in place to enable the current Trump dictatorship.

His cousin Jeb helped him steal the election from Al Gore, sending America down a path of religious extremism, and away from a greener future. He should be excited for his crimes too.

I started to despise the USA when they re-elected George W. Bush. Now under Trump… what a horrible country. No offence to the good Americans, but the conservatives and ignorant Americans are some of the worst humans alive.

He’s an idiot, but he was surrounded by evil men, and women.

W killed more people so far. With trump’s bungling of COVID and the Iran debacle he’s certainly working on it.

Edit: Oh, forgot about the USAID slashes. Those aren’t even quantifiable yet, but people have estimates and they aren’t good…

Not disagreeing but Jeb is his brother, not his cousin.

He could be both.

It very much is, it's just gone mask-off.

No even that era of GOP hated this modern incarnation.

They don’t hate what MAGA doing, they just hate the mask-off part as “crude”

This is a joke, right? They DREAMED of being able to pull this kind of shit off, dating back to at LEAST Reagan.

Yeah, it's not like the GOP ever elected a racist entertainer with cognitive issues before.

I'd say the current version of the GOP is "something" like the GOP of 20 years ago

The lunatics are running the asylum but the same bones are there. Authoritarianism, corruption, and racial resentment have been a Republican thing since Nixon. Tax cuts for the rich since Reagan but very rich friendly in opposing The New Deal. They were hawkish under W and though the over anti-immigration stance is much harsher under Trump Reagan and HW had to work to appease that faction of the party while still coming off as compassionate. I'd say the main thing that changed under Trump is the decorum but that's really it.

It's the same party, with the same powerbrokers calling the shots. It's just that for a few decades they tried, poorly, to hide it.

Reagan's administration alone proves that. The war against drugs created a war on a lifestyle, which doesn't work and was directed at impoverished communities and hippies (political rivals), and gave their constituents someone to look down on.

LBJ put it best with the classic quote, '“If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.”

Back to Reagan. Publicly disowning his daughter for being a lesbian. Blowing over 6 Billion dollars on a fictional Star Wars program, where'd that money go? Iran Contra. Giving aid, and refusing to condemn Iraq's usage of chemical weapons to the UN during the war. Yes, Iran used them as well. They both used them during their war that lasted almost exactly Reagan's presidency 1980-1988, relied heavily on trench warfare and chemical weapons and holds the record for most fatalities in modern warfare above 500,000. And Busch senior after the first Iraq war, broke a deal with Saddam after that the U.S. would over see the dismantling and burning of chemical arms, they would halt their nuclear and biological programs back in 1991. Iraq stopped letting UN inspectors in after saying for a couple years it was complete. Which makes one wonder what the hell JR was thinking starting a war in Iraq over WMD's?

Don't forget, Reagan started the huge gutting of the middle class by cutting taxes from the rich, that will magically 'Trickle Down' to us poors, I'm still waiting, meanwhile it surged upwards.

And here's an extremely offensive quote that sums it the fuck up.

"By 1968 you can’t say ‘n****r’ — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff."

Lee Atwater, Ronald Reagan's advisor, on an effective Southern Strategy in 1981.

MAGA is an idiot's re-labeling of something that's been around a lot longer than I've been alive.

Don't buy into revisionist history.

Bush Sr and G.W voted for Hillary. That’s how fucked Trump made the GOP.
