We really need to have at least 3 major parties represented in all branches of government, it can’t be our team vs your team anymore. Needs to be room for compromise and a more even balance of power.

I'd also argue proportional representation would be a big improvement over first-past-the-post, if the US cares about overcoming political polarization and gridlock while also avoiding dominance by any party in politics.

Proportional representation would significantly enhance the potential of third parties to actually gain power in government instead of keeping it a more simplistic Democrat-Republican contest.

l love the idea of proportional representation, but it's hard to envision how we get from here to there. About 1/3 of Massachusetts voters are Republicans but the congressional delegation is all D. The legislature will never vote to give R's more seats. Same for Texas and Florida GOP, they'll never voluntarily give up power, even if it is good for the nation.

The problem with IRV and proportional representation and really all of the solutions to FPP is that we're missing the "how" of getting there. Everything relies on the people with power to implement these systems having a conscience, when it's been demonstrated ad nauseum that they will not move to change the very system that provides their power.

This kind of thing can't happen without a serious societal shift, otherwise it'll just be another thing we all want but politicians continue to ignore. I don't know how we get there without some.. unpleasant.. events.

I'd take 5. Or 7. Or 39. Or really any prime number at this point.
