Older generations make fun of us. Younger generations make fun of us. Usually both sides do it by mischaracterizing generational behaviors or by being super hypocritical.
Once I ingrained that realization, I reached a zen state of not giving a shit. Boomers fucked up the world and Gen Z can't read. Why do I need to care about their opinions of Millennials?

This is the most true statement. When we became part of the work force and started multiplying and taking their roles it was “damn millenials” it never stopped. I’ll take my emojis and love of 2000s music and culture (bc we lived it), our millennialisms and excitability any day over these other emotionless younger ones (I know I’m generalizing and I’m sorry to the ones who aren’t this way) is rather be cringe and live life than be too worried about the way I/we look to do it. And to be totally frank I actually genuinely feel sad for the younger gens. It cannot be easy living worrying about what everyone thinks 24/7. I would be so jealous of the childhood we got if I didn’t live it. And it crushes me for our kids that they don’t have it. Trying my best to recreate parts of it but impossible to totally do, I think. I’m not saying that condescendingly either. I genuinely don’t envy being in my 20s or younger. What we had was the ultimate and I’m so thankful for it

EDIT: since there's some traction on this, the reason it's taken so long was that narcissistic personality disorder runs hard on both sides of my family. I was raised to be a people pleaser as a survival skill essentially - and my parents were nowhere near as evil as many other narc parents, trust me.

I am in my mid thirties and I’m taking online college classes. I have to put disclaimers not to respond with “AI” which somehow works a lot of the time, it seems anyway.
I had to call the school and had a very uncharacteristic “meltdown” when it was obvious an instructor was using it to respond to me and other students. It felt like a punch in the face and a hand in my wallet, because I pay for this. The person I spoke to didn’t see a problem at all. I said I don’t want to be instructed by AI, I want a person. There’s no way to prove it and so I can do nothing but keep my ideals and get my degree.
I can’t imagine if I had children of my own. I have shed tears for the next generations. I wish I could hold out hope for it to die down, but I really don’t think it will.

Same here, never really been around a millennial who thinks their hot shit. I have seen some who wonder how their future is gonna be and doing their best to survive (consumed with anxiety and depression. I have seen some who were silver spooned or entitled to some things (but all generations cover that slippery slope).
I will say the most annoying generation for me is Gen X. They post the most annoying “me me me,” memes about how they are so great because they been through this and that etc. I always call them the middle child generation and they need attention now.
Boomers just post stupid stuff about back in the day or no one wants work anymore/work hard for what they want

I think it’s too broad to say yes or no because back pain can come from so many causes. I’ve had it since my 20s, but I played football in high school and beat the shit out of my body, so it’s somewhat logical in that scenario.

It's likely compounded sleeping habits that are now starting to hurt after years. Most of these aches are bad habits compounded to the now result that you have chronically tight muscles. For Instance, I used to kind of sleep with my right arm "chicken winged", like bent at the elbow tightly, and then tucked under my body. About 5 years ago my right delt, the tendon or whatever that goes from my delt to my wrist, and my scapula all started hurting really bad. It would hurt through my bicep, wrist and deltoid. So I started consciously not doing that, and it seems to have really eliminated the pain. So check how you relax, how you sleep, the position your body rests. All these things can compound and just cause aches. It's not too late to make corrections.

30 - 40 lbs overweight, while not super healthy, will not cause any back issues on its own.
It's 100% sedentary lifestyle causing problems like joint pain, etc. I'm 6'1", 170 lbs, with a desk job. If I don't do some kind of physical activity several times a week, I get all kinds of issues.

I have a picture of my parents shortly after I was born. They were about 40. They overall looked pretty good! My dad looked a little older than he was, and mom looked a little younger, but that was mostly due to my dad's stressful job.
They're in their 70s now. My dad looks about 60, and still walks or jogs a couple miles 2-3 days a week, weather depending. My mom looks her age, mainly because she never bothered to take care of herself after 50. (Too much TV.)
Idk. It's made me prioritize basic cardio (brisk walks) and healthier eating. I despise running, but walking the dog is enjoyable.
My wife has excellent genes and looks mid-20s.
24
u/Shawn_NYC 7h ago edited 6h ago
I can explain it. Millennials were the first generation to still look young in their 30s. So they interantized the feedback that they "looked 20" well into their 30s.
But by the time you hit 40 you've got grey hairs, thinning hair and some lines in the face. There's simply no escaping it, you look older. I think the millennial experience with aging is closer to "hitting a wall" where within a short few years you go from "looking in your 20s" to "looking like a 40 something middle aged person."
And not everyone's self-perception has caught up with how quickly reality arrived.

I think that the issue is what kind of paragon we make, In general though it is true that on average our generation looks younger than the equivalent Gen X and Boomer did at at the same age, but if we compare with current 25-30 years old that impression disappears, since they do have the same advantages in nutrition and in general healthcare understanding that we did (if not a better one).

People acting like most millennials are actively trying to look younger don't seem to understand the cyclical nature of fashion.
Most of the time, when anything but a fraction of a fraction of any generation seem like they're "trying" to dress young, it's because most people maintain the style they had in their later formative years and that style just so happens to have cycled back around.
I think even whale tales have circled back around.

(Edit) I don’t do any of this. But if you do or don’t…it’s weird to care so much about it. We’ve got real shit going on in the world that needs attention. None of this matters.

Am I the only millennial who took the back pain advice of boomers and gen xers seriously and took great care to maintain good posture and back strength; therefore dodging chronic back pain so far?

I was a dancer, so I have good posture and back strength. Also back pain from said dancing. I think we just did more extracurricular sports than our parents and their parents.

I got back in really good shape started playing on a sports club team in the past few years. What I learned is most people's (myself included) back pain is from weak hips with poor hip mobility and being out of shape, rather than posture. Bad posture is also usually a symptom of that.

- Back has never hurt. Never said adulting or doggo in my life. Have never posted a meme, or cared about memes in the slightest. Guess I'm not actually a millennial.

Thank you for posting this. I love so much about our generation but we made fun of Gen-X posting the "we were the hardest/toughest don't-give-a-damn generation" and now seeing us do it is painful.
