Turns out the entire clan I was playing a game with was gen z, and they knew I was a millennial just because of the "lol" thing. They never made fun of me for it to be clear, but one day they did start calling me a millennial I was like "how the fuck do they know???", then they just started sending a bunch of messages capped with lol... Goddammit! LOL
You know, when a gen z human isn't entirely sure what they're describing/trying to communicate so they shoehorn both into the sentence with a slash (/).
Plus we narrate all our thoughts in our texts—well, some of them depending on how unhinged they are that day—and l know this because I honestly could have written this myself. Also, well placed meme! I had to stifle a laugh in my gp’s waiting room.
i've just accepted it at this point, they can make fun of me all they want lol. its a result of growing up using LJ and AIM and MySpace and living through the emergence of it. i'll lol if i want to.....lol
It’s true. I am friends with one of my coworkers so we will chitchat on teams while we work. She is Gen X and I am acutely aware of how often I say lol when I am talking to her because she doesn’t unless she actually means lol. It’s basically punctuation for me lol
To me, when someone adds “lol” at the end of a statement, it comes off as disingenuous/insincere and insecure. I think people add “lol” to evoke a certain feeling inside themselves rather than to try and ease the mind of the reader/recipient, and that’s okay. But knowing that it doesn’t make the reader feel better in any way may help you to stop doing it. Knowing that it actually makes you look worse may help even more.

I physically can’t stop doing the “lol” one.
I’m worried my tone comes off rude or bitchy if I don’t add it in there. lol
Omg I just did it again.
