Lore “Hey that’s not so bad- SWEET JESUS”
A shot is set up in such a way where it looks fine from one angle, then they reveal another that makes it look way worse
Infinity War - Thanos reveals Nebula hanging up imprisoned, then when the camera follows Gamora going to her we see that mechanical components are stretched out and her head and body are in pieces.
Breaking Bad - Hector sets off a bomb in a murder suicide against Gus but he seems to walk out fine impossibly, then the camera moves to in front of him and you see half of his face is just not there anymore.

Saving Prívate Ryan
During the landing scene, we see Captain Miller rescuing a wounded soldier on the beach, only for a shell to explode right next to them moments later.
After that, we see him continue dragging the soldier, only to turn around and realize that the explosion has blown away everything from the waist down.

218
u/The-Green 3h ago
said wounded soldier was also captain miller's second in command, a (likely) first lieutenant. you see him during the beginning, he's the one with the single bar on his helmet standing with miller on the landing craft.
miller wasn't just dragging some random guy across the beach to rescue him. he was desperately trying to save his second in command, someone he likely already served with back in italy.
for military nerds, his death is also likely why a technical sergeant (horvath) is the second in command throughout the rest of the movie or even why a captain is on this mission to save private ryan at all!
41
145
u/Responsible_Mail_113 3h ago
Happens a little later in this scene with his radioman too. Miller gives him an report to relay, turns away to speak to Sgt. Horvath for like five seconds, then turns back to him only to discover him dead with his face a bloody ruin from a shrapnel hit or heavy MG round.

This one scene is full of examples. There’s also the guy whose helmet saves him from a bullet, and then gets shot seconds later when he takes the helmet off to inspect it

I'm dying on this hill: there was a switch up in scenes during script editing. She should have turned the generator on, felt his arm, realized he died, and then the raptor should have jumpscared her.
It's so weird to me that she has a moment of calm when she feels his arm, while a screaming velociraptor is still hanging out 5 feet away from her.
101
u/BestDescription3834 3h ago
She gets the door closed and thinks she has it trapped and then she believes she has backup or potentially somebody with her that has a gun.
409
u/Mysterious_Man_65 4h ago edited 4h ago
Never understood this. His severed arm somehow ended up atop a cabinet and his entire body was devoured in less than 20 minutes by a lone Velociraptor. These things are giant naked scaly man sized monsters, as opposed to diminutive feathery fluffy turkey sized normal Velociraptors, but a lone one should barely be able to move after eating a meal almost its own size, much less be capable of chasing and hunting Sarah here.
380
u/theMangoJayne 4h ago
I feel like with the suspension of disbelief one could argue that the raptor had a torso chunk in its mouth, did a rip and tear that flung the arm, and the arm landed and wedged just so.

64
u/zionapes 4h ago
First of all, Sarah?
There’s no reason to think it ate all of him. It wouldn’t need to. Grant explains that they disembowel and “you’re alive when they start to eat you.” So it likely incapacitated Arnold, disemboweled and started eating his organs. Arnold may have been thrashing in pain and adrenaline before dying, so the raptor likely removed the limb that was preventing her from eating peacefully and tossed it away.
As for the rest of his body, it’s a maze like complex, we don’t see every corridor. The raptor probably dragged it away somewhere. Maybe behind the cables that it emerges from when it attacks Ellie.

The TV Show Third Watch kind of did this (for dramatic effect, not comedy). Cleverly edited because this was network TV in the 2000s.
Character lands flat on her back following an explosion. She looks fine. Then her legs land in-frame, pointed the opposite direction, near her head.
She just stares at them a moment before she dies.

In real life? Don't ever remove an object from a puncture wound unless it's immobilizing you and you're in danger.
In a cartoon? You're fine if the writer likes you.
248
u/TwoSnapsMack 4h ago
Adding to your point in real life
You want to make sure that the object is bandaged/secured so that it actually stays in until you get to the ER. It’s the thing that’s keeping you from bleeding out.
57
u/Mission_Carry9947 3h ago
I know this is genuine advice and I’ve heard it before, but the logistics still confuse me.
Like, if I have a knife in my leg, how do I secure it? I’m imagining trying to wrap bandages/duct tape/gauze around the knife and then my leg, while every tiny bump against the knife hurts like hell and makes the wound a little worse.

211
u/Patcho418 4h ago
agreed; I think what’s so strong about Devilman Crybaby is that it isn’t just a sad ending for the sake of it, but rather it carries a message about trust and faith, and what happens when a paranoid society lets go of those two essential things. it’s a show that tells us “love thy neighbour before it’s too late”
92
u/SlowpokeIsAGamer 4h ago
It's also the realistic nature of it. For an anime about Demons trying to take over the world its depiction of the total breakdown of society is chillingly real. To the point you can look around in real life and see some of the same warning signs.

I keep seeing people post things like the Ghost Ship wire scene, and it reminded me of the lawyer's death in 13 Ghosts.
The house in the movie is made entirely of glass, and the basement imprisoning the ghosts will frequently change. At one point the lawyer character is slowly backing away from an approaching ghost and you see a dramatic shot of one of the glass doors sliding swiftly shut. At first he seems fine, but with a shocked look on his face. Then his glasses break off, his tie slips off of him, and a single drop of blood runs down his temple. Then the front half of him just flops/slides down revealing that the glass door cut him in half vertically and the inside of back half of his body is revealed still pressed against the other side of the glass.

It's one of the things I remember most because of the bathtub scene freaking me out when I was younger. Now as an adult I just kind of think it's a funny scene because of the ghost's girl's attitude. She's not even being evil or anything, she's just getting annoyed at the living girl interrupting her while she's trying to have a ghost bath, like "excuse me, do you fucking mind??"

Hereditary:- Charlie’s death and the aftermath
After peter parks, he silently goes to bed, leaving his mother to discover what happened the next morning. Peter drives home with Charlie’s body in the car
74
u/H8thinmints 4h ago
God, when the scene with Charlie hit, it was so sudden after the panic of (i think) needing to breath from an allergy. The way the camera is just latched onto Peter's face so close, the tension of him trying to look in the backseat as the camera shifts to see what's behind him, the flash of what you see before it snaps right back to his panic-stricken face. And then Toni Collette's scream the following morning...

In Shingeki no kyojin we see a girl performing CPR on his boyfriend after the titans incident on the official first day of the cadets. At first it looks like the boyfriend is just unconscious, but after the camera shifts, we see that he's missing half his body, and the girls is completely in denial performing CPR. The scene is censored in the anime, but still lets the viewer see that the man is missing his lower half. In the manga, they straight up show you.

In season 2 a character discovers Hannibal's secret, only to be killed and displayed across multiple vertical slides, much like those medical exhibits that show slices of the body to show internal organs, etc.
The first shot shows the body from the side, then slowly angles the camera to reveal the true horror of what has been done to them.
It's been a while since I watched the show, but that scene stuck with me for a long time. I'm avoiding posting a picture since it's pretty graphic

Near the end, the main character Pvt Charles comes to help Colin, after most of their group has died through either supernatural means or insanity, and notices Colin's legs are moving under his blanket, assuring him he'll be on his feet soon. Only for it to be revealed after Charles removes the blanket that the movement was rats which had been and were eating his legs. Charles then mercy kills Colin.

In Freddy vs. Jason, the character is thrown into a metal bracket by Jason, after having heroically charged the masked slasher with a flag pole. An act quickly lost amidst the utter chaos of the scene.
When Kia finds him, he appears relatively fine, downplaying his injuries and insisting she go help the others. However, once she leaves, the camera pan reveals the truth: Linderman has been fatally impaled through the back.
