Lore “Hey that’s not so bad- SWEET JESUS”

A shot is set up in such a way where it looks fine from one angle, then they reveal another that makes it look way worse

Infinity War - Thanos reveals Nebula hanging up imprisoned, then when the camera follows Gamora going to her we see that mechanical components are stretched out and her head and body are in pieces.

Breaking Bad - Hector sets off a bomb in a murder suicide against Gus but he seems to walk out fine impossibly, then the camera moves to in front of him and you see half of his face is just not there anymore.

Do I take it out or do I leave it in?!

In real life? Don't ever remove an object from a puncture wound unless it's immobilizing you and you're in danger.

In a cartoon? You're fine if the writer likes you.

Adding to your point in real life

You want to make sure that the object is bandaged/secured so that it actually stays in until you get to the ER. It’s the thing that’s keeping you from bleeding out.

I know this is genuine advice and I’ve heard it before, but the logistics still confuse me.

Like, if I have a knife in my leg, how do I secure it? I’m imagining trying to wrap bandages/duct tape/gauze around the knife and then my leg, while every tiny bump against the knife hurts like hell and makes the wound a little worse.

Pretty much yeah, try to reduce movement of the item

Oh, I know this one!! If you have been impaled or stabbed by an object and don’t have immediate access to healthcare, you do need to secure it.

To secure something like a knife, take an entire roll of gauze, a rolled up cloth, rolled up clothes, anything like that (ideally gauze because it’s sterile!!!), and stack them on each side until you reach the top of the object.

Sorta like a jenga tower, you’ll want to stack it on the left/right, then top/bottom, then left/right again and so on. It will be thick, and you’ll probably bump the object a few times, but you need to give it the support on all four sides to stay upright.

Once you’ve stacked enough, take a roll of gauze and wrap the supports around the object tightly. It’s like securing a pallet. Your goal is to give it supports on every side then wrap them all together to keep them all upright. As you go, you’ll want to secure the first few layers to your body.

Let’s say you’ve been stabbed in the leg: you’ll want to place two gauze on either side, then wrap those together. Then wrap each side around your leg. Alternate the angle of your gauze 90 degrees like a log cabin and add two more, then secure it to your leg again. Do this as many times as it takes to get to near the top, but you don’t need to wrap it around your leg each time, just a few passes on the lower levels to make sure it’s won’t wobble too much.

Adrenaline would help with the pain in the moment, but you’re right, it would suck. Unfortunately, your only other options are leaving it without support and risk it causing further damage, or taking it out causing further damage on the way out and risk bleeding out before help arrives.

Generally speaking if you’ve stabbed yourself with a little fork or something you could probably just take it out, but if you’ve truly been impaled it’s very important to secure it!!

Wrap the bandage around the object like a donut (if I remember that first aid course from 20 years ago properly)

Yup. And if you ever get stabbed in the eye with a protruding object, the recommendation is to get some sort of cup you can poke a hole in so the object goes through. And ideally you would be with someone else so you can cover your other eye to stop it from tracking objects and forcing the other one to move.

But you get it, anything that'll keep it from stirring up whatever of your insides it's touching is the goal. Duct tape around the eyes and object would work too if nothing else.

You make a gauze donut, put it over the object, then secure it with ace bandages. These can also be made in advance, I always had a few prepped in my aid bag.

You take a bandage or gauze and wrap it around your hand in a slightly larger shape, then wrap around that to form a cushioned ring and place it over the object. Some first aid kits come with premade ones called ring pads but usually in first aid training theyll just teach you how to make one out of gauze or a triangle bandage though you could technically do it with any cloth it just wouldn't be sterile but probably better than nothing, most people call it a 'donut'. You use that pad as a cushion to wrap regular bandages around to hold it in place and put pressure on the wound and not the embedded object and you wrap it tightly and don't remove the object because it might be keeping something from rupturing or might be barbed or serated and pulling it out will do much worse.

Objects in your leg are surprisingly … comfortable. Just cut the trouser leg off and walk to the ambulance

It will depend on location though, in the knee joint is going to be bad
