READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule

So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.

If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.

If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.

What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.

If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.

CORE GUIDES:

  1. The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
  2. Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
  3. Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
  4. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  5. The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
  6. LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
  7. JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
  8. Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
  9. Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
  10. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)

The 4 key questions:

  1. What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
  2. How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
  3. How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
  4. How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.

When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.

More guides:

If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.

Hunting-specific:

  2. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  3. Want to hunt game at 400+ yards? The long range hunting primer - shots on game at 400+ yards aren't trivial, and a magnum cartridge isn't a cheat code. NOTE: Questions/discussion around shots on game past 300 yards will be removed from the sub. See the expanded policy link above. (hunting)
  4. Hollywood's guide to field testing your skills and gear (especially for long range hunting, but also pertains to NRL Hunter matches) - How to know the distances you and your gear are capable of making shots at (hunting)

MISC NOTES:

Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.

We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

Competition related (PRS/NRL/F-Class/etc) Why isn’t Schmidt and Bender in PRS anymore?

Post image
124 Upvotes

If this has already been discussed at length, someone please point me to the thread.

Otherwise, maybe because I’m an older millennial that was in the military, but when I think of “highest performance scopes”, my brain automatically fills in the answer with S&B.

I was kinda shocked to see that essentially nobody uses the PMii 5-25, which (I’m sure I’m wrong) seems like a good match for this sort of sport.

What am I missing about Schmidt and Bender?

I suck at long range How far below the target do I need to aim?

Post image

My .243 is sighted in at 100 yards. If I’m shooting downhill at a target 250 yards away, im supposed to aim low… but how low. How much does the downhill angle affect my point of impact?
I’ve attached a diagram for reference. Thanks

Politics, rumor, etc Smith & Wesson buys Savage Arms. Hopefully Savage tries to make a comeback with their precision rifles. Not likely, just hopeful.

I Just built a 6 arc AR platform rifle. It’s a Craddock 18” reaper barrel, with a OSSL PRI 17” handguard tube and an AEM30K suppressor.
I’m looking at Nightforce and Leupold MK5 HDs. But open to other considerations and happy to hear about experiences with this round(I’m new to it)

Far better it is to dare to build a purpose built setup, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who built a single do-all setup that will neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. -Your boy Theo

It's that time of year again, and we're seeing a lot of posts related to long range hunting.

A friendly reminder - this is NOT a sub for long range hunting. Any posts discussing shots on game past 300 yards will be removed.

Here's a link to the full hunting post policy. Please read it before making any posts related to hunting.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Seekins Precision Factory Warranty Groups

Post image
5 Upvotes

I had my rifle into Seekins for warranty work because it would not group past 100 yards. They send me a picture of the groups my rifle shot upon completion of warranty work. They say they replaced firing pin assembly as well as trued the bolt face. Do these groups look reasonable for a rifle of this quality. Im not sure they do.

Rifle - Seekins Havak PH3, 7PRC, 22in Barrel

EDIT: Sent rifle in for issues grouping at 200. I was wondering if the accuracy here will reflect out to range.

Group flex (10 shots minimum) Sub-MOA magnum?

Thumbnail

Ok got myself my first magnum (tikka lsa-65 in 7prc) and have been collecting data for handloads.

I assume that with more shots I'm sitting at approx 1MOA. 4 shots bergers was at 0.4MOA. pretty happy with this one!

Anyways here is my composite group of 18 shots. There are both 195gr berger eol and 180gr scenars. Both seem to hit the same spot.

Bergers exit with muzzle velocity of 3020fps and scenars with 3080fps.

Rifle is pretty heavy at just shy of 16lbs (edited)

Cheers!

E: i have 28inch tube

E2: I weighed rifle and its 15.5lbs

Looking into building/getting something new, mostly will be shot between 700-1200. Been trying to research and a lot is out there but I’d like to hear some personal thoughts on the two options. Distance, energy on target, build pictures, all of it!

I'll try and keep this brief by leaving out all the background crap; the WHYs and such .....

I have a BOG tripod, and It's mostly fine, except I want to replace EITHER the entire ball head and ARCA clamp, or just the ARCA clamp.

What should I be looking for, and where to replace either/or the top ARCA clamp or the entire head. Budget IS a concern. I'm new to all this and certainly don't need top-shelf precision & extended functionality.

See images attached. OFC these may all be proprietary; I am very new to all this and have no idea what, if any, sizing standards may exist. I have my digital calipers here if measurements are needed:

I thank you in advance for any help!

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Tikka ACE chassis for both .22 LR and 6.5 Creedmoor?

Hey everyone, I’m new to precision rifles and looking at getting a Tikka T3x ACE Target in 6.5 Creedmoor. I’d also like to shoot .22 LR for cheaper practice.

Can I use the same ACE chassis and swap between a T3x barreled action in 6.5 Creedmoor and a T1x barreled action in .22 LR, along with the appropriate magwell and magazines? Has anyone here actually done this, and how much hassle is switching back and forth?

Or would I be better off going with an aftermarket chassis that supports two compatible barreled actions—one rimfire and one centerfire? I understand these would be two complete actions with their own bolts, rather than just a barrel swap.

Would sharing one chassis save enough money to be worthwhile, or should I just plan on two separate rifles? Any advice for a beginner would be appreciated!

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts I feel at a crossroads between 3 guns. Most of my shooting will be at the range with an occasional hunting trip. I don't care about going beyond 1000 yards. at least not now. maybe in the future.

• Upvotes

But for now, im content with 1000 yards max.

What I do know is that I want to change out the stock right away with the MDT Oryx. I want a basic bipod and obviously a scope. but im content with that. and to be honest, the chassis is just for looks. I dont plan to shoot in competitions or anything. its all for fun, and the occasional hunting.

And so im trying to decide, should I just go straight "to the top" and get the tikka? even used ones are like 1000 in my area. or should I go middle of the road and get the B14? my last option, im thinking of the howa 1500 and dropping it in the chassis I want.

This way I save money on the rifle, I get the chassis I want, and I can spend the extra 500 on the glass or save it in general. since im ok with 1000 yards max, it seems the howa should be enough.

this is going to be chambered in 308, I have a reloading set up. I used to reload 30-30 and so I will just need a new die.

anyway thanks for the help! just curious if anyone else has been here before.

I suck at long range I don’t need a magnum… but I got one anyway

Finally got everything together for a long range bolt gun. I have never shot beyond 1k yds (though I do shoot to 1k several times a month)… so this will be a new experience as my range goes to 1400 and a neighboring range does mile shoots.

ARC CDG LA in 300PRC
26” LW barrel
TT diamond trigger
Atlas supercal bipod
Masterpiece Arms Matrix Pro chassis with some extra weight
Omega 300 with a directional brake.
Leupold MK5hd in an area 419 mount.

The whole package weighs just over 28# unloaded, so I am expecting pretty mild recoil and hopefully can spot my shots to make things easier.

At this point I don’t even know enough to know what I don’t know about shooting these longer ranges so I am excited to get some rounds down range and see what I am in for. This is also the first time working up a bolt action load so it’s nice to explore some things that never really came into play while loading to mag length for gas guns.

I have to travel around for my kids soccer this weekend, but hopefully I can get out next week.

I do have a question, is it worthwhile to swap to the ski (or for atlas dish) style feet?

Rimfire Fell out of the Bravo tree and managed to hit every branch on the way down.

My longrange Tikka T1x 22lr has gone a bit off the rails. I picked up the Bravo because the XRS jumped in price last year. Jokes on me, I'm way further into this chassis than if I had just bought the more expensive chassis and left it as it comes. On the other hand, the rifle now fits like a glove so at least that's nice.

Got to the range today to get some rounds down the barrel to get the speed up done so I could start working handloads. I did a mild charge of H4895 with 3 different projectiles, the Hornady 80gr ELD-M, Berger 80.5gr Fullbore and the Berger 85.5gr LRHT.

Of the 3, the barrel really loved the 80.5gr Berger. I will work on developing it and the Berger 85.5 to see if I can get any better.

Today’s 80.5gr Berger groups for your time.

Groups, but not a flex (Less than 10 shots) Almost finished MRAD

Thumbnail
gallery
139 Upvotes

I bought this almost 3 years ago and due to the never ending divorce I’ve only shot it a couple of times and only in 308. The groupings with commercial 168 grain FGMM have been excellent. Divorce is done. I’m getting back on my feet and moving to a beautiful new place on 5 acres. I’ll be able to set up a 200 yard range on the property, but the real excitement is I’ll be a little less than 90 minutes from the families 1000 acre hunting lease. I decided to replace the Hybrid 46M with the TBAC 338 Ultra Gen 2 and added the 12” Area 419 ARCA rail (for tripod use finally) and went with the Atlas CAL instead of the V8 (although I probably should’ve gone with the Super CAL). Last item will be the Maztech 15k that I plan to move between the M82 and MRAD. Disregard the diving board height concerns, I’m using a 0.5” ADM QD riser mounted to the Maztech to get the needed height and make moving it to other systems easier. I’m super excited. Currently it’s a 45-50 minute drive each way to a decent 100 yard range. So packing and unpacking plus travel means 3.5 hours for 45 minutes of shooting. I’ve wanted to add a 30 cal magnum, but I’m going to see if there’s a genuine reason to do that (new dies, bullets, and brass) rather than just using the 338 Lapua if I’m shooting past 800-900. Those of you with experience… is there really a point for adding a 30 cal magnum? Lapua cases cost half, but other than that bullets are only 25% cheaper. I don’t know how the recoil is with 338 Lapua, but 308 recoil on this seems to be about half of every other 308 rifle I’ve shot. I know recoil on the M82 is different, but I don’t remember that being too much of an issue either, but again it’s been quite a while.

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Barrel Predicament

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey guys! So I have maybe a silly issue on what length barrel to go with on my new 6.5 creed build. I had originally ordered a 20 inch proof pxt carbon barrel blank but have been updated that it will still be a while before they are available to ship. I was told he has an 18 inch and a 22 inch available but am stuck on what to do. I know there’s not a whole lot of velocity difference (200-250fps) between the 18 and the 22 inch. I am using the new MDT DRT chassis which has a 15 inch fore-end for reference and suppressed 100% of the time. What’s your guys’s opinion?? It will be used for general hunting along with possibly some local competition shooting/ range fun. Would you go 18 for better maneuverability? Or add the two inches and get a little bit more velocity….OR wait who knows how long for the middle ground.

Just curious about your thoughts on the 300 RUM and it being used for long range, seen a lot of things about other 30 cal magnums, like 300 PRC, so was just curious.
