DISCUSSION Any Devs who could take over?
So the news is a huge kick in the balls. Is that truly it then or would there be any chance EA could sell the IP? Honestly coudnt see it going to CD Project or Bethesda. Dk if there's anyone else who could take over ot will EA just let the franchise rot out of spite?
•
u/ironwolf425 2h ago
i’d trust Larian and CDPR with it
•
u/anbeasley 1h ago
Owlcat games
•
u/KyleVPirate 1h ago
We shall see how their Expanse game is first.
•
u/Still-Puma 1h ago
Is it based on Amazon series ?
•
u/Suicidalpainthorse 1h ago
And the books too I believe.
•
u/Still-Puma 1h ago edited 14m ago
Not bad, not bad at all then. Expanse had me jaw-dropped few times, the TV series, writing.
•
u/KyleVPirate 1h ago
Yes, based on the TV series and the book series! I played the beta. Very fun. Reminded me so much of Mass Effect, but it still needs LOTS of work.
•
u/Due_Flow6538 1h ago
I too would trust the top two rpg studios with this. But if we're being realistic, Amazon is much more likely the new buyer.
•
u/preferred-til-newops 51m ago
Didn't Amazon close their gaming studios? They laid off all but a handful of their devs at multiple locations.
•
u/Due_Flow6538 41m ago
They don't need to own the developer if they own the IP.
•
u/SHansen45 33m ago
okay the discussion here is which developer would be the best for ME5, Amazon the guy you responded to you said just closed their gaming studios, Larian and CDPR aren’t gonna work on it, period, Larian is busy with Divinty and CDPR is already working on Cyberpunk 2
•
u/Due_Flow6538 28m ago
Larian I think won't do it even if they had the manpower and time because they probably won't do it for any franchise they don't get equity in. CDPR is busy with Witcher 4 and cyberpunk 2. While we're throwing out left field picks, Rockstar North probably has the capital to buy it.
•
u/whatdoiexpect 6h ago edited 6h ago
would there be any chance EA could sell the IP?
- Burnout
- Command & Conquer
- Dead Space
- Dungeon Keeper
- Mercenaries
- Mirror's Edge
- Syndicate
- Titanfall
- Ultima
- Wing Commander
I wouldn't my breath. Granted, all of this is brought on, in part, due to EA being changed up as far as ownership goes. It's not impossible. But EA has a reputation.
•
u/DetDipstick 6h ago
I feel like they'd rather have the IP die than someone else making money with it.
•
u/WilliamthePious 6h ago
This is unfortunately the most accurate assumption.
•
u/Cliche_James 6h ago edited 5h ago
It would not surprise me if EA has killed more IPs than games studios they own have developed and released games.
Edit: phrasing
•
u/Marineraider25 3h ago
This is sad , but your are probably factual as fuck on that
All that matters to them is dollar signs they make and less dollar signs anyone else makes ... its the sad truth
•
•
•
•
u/kron123456789 6h ago
I'm not sure Crysis IP was ever owned by EA.
•
u/whatdoiexpect 6h ago
Updated. Thank you. I hastily made that list and didn't think to verify that specific game despite checking many others.
→ More replies (1)•
u/JesterMarcus 5h ago
I think the original creator of Ultima has bought back the IP.
•
u/whatdoiexpect 5h ago
I saw a note of this but didn't dig much deeper. It's a bit more nuanced, though ultimately Garriott is getting it back. It should be noted that he didn't buy it back. He can terminate it being the original creator and it being 35 years since he sold it (or something, i don't understand the law). Ultimately, it reads more like EA has no actual recourse more than anything else.
•
u/FlippantFox 4h ago edited 2h ago
That's basically exactly the law. If the creator or their heirs wants to, they can just send a notice and claim the rights back 35 years after selling the IP, but it still takes a full year for the rights to revert whatsoever. However, I'm pretty sure Mass Effect was created under work-for-hire contracts meaning the rights were owned by Bioware from the start and there's not a single creator or group of creators that could claim the rights back in this circumstance.
•
•
u/Sorizigor 6h ago
Feels like an IP that will rot for 10-15 years and will randomly be bought for the next game to start development. Unfortunately.
•
u/Inner_Ask_2671 6h ago
EA is known for holding on to IPs even it isn’t profitable. Mass Effect and Dragon Age won’t be sold and will probably get lost and forgotten.
•
u/Ill-Revolution-8219 3h ago
It is not about what studio, it is about what people.
Drew Karpyshyn and Casey Hudson are must haves.
•
u/MakaveliTheDon22 3h ago
Drew is the narrative director for Exodus, I'll definitely be checking that out.
•
u/somethingX 6h ago
Companies rarely sell IP's these days because they don't want others making a profit even if they have no interest in doing anything with it. The only way I see another game happening is if they contract another studio, but most studios wouldn't want to work with EA
•
u/Arumhal 4h ago
EA has recently agreed to release Ultima series back to Richard Garriott although it's more of a case of "The series is dead, we killed it and now we have no interest in having a legal battle with its original creator."
•
u/Balth-czar 1h ago
It's part of the law after 30 years the original owner can take it back. EA really had no choice
•
u/NuklearFerret 5h ago
That's why you license IP, instead.
•
u/Is12345aweakpassword 5h ago edited 5h ago
Sure yeah, but this is EA. Any license agreement would probably be something asinine where they (EA) get like 70% revenue stake
It would basically be a poison pill license, that no one would enter into, thus going back to the primary point of “they only sit on IP and don’t allow it to be transacted”
•
u/SoftDrinkReddit 6h ago
see thats it cause whatever money EA could get for Mass Effect if a competent developer bought it they would make well over 10 fold what they paid for it so EA is like nah the money is not worth it its generally better for us to just leave it on a shelf and maybe eventually come back to
•
•
u/Loyalist77 4h ago edited 2h ago
I'd be curious what there is to take over? What have we seen of ME5 beyond Liara's face, the outline of a ship and a cool coat.
•
u/Redhood101101 3h ago
I’m curious what was happening behind the scenes. Since the announcement 5 years ago apparently it was only in early pre-production
•
u/Senselesstaste 2h ago
Likely they were working on the tenth reboot of veilguard so nothing was ever done on mass effect.
•
u/Raaaaandyyyy 6h ago
If the KOTOR remake actually comes out and is a smash hit, I could see Embracer Group being given it. Literally would’be just proven they can do BioWare’s style correctly if that’s the case, but it’s a long shot
•
u/Feowen_ 1h ago
It's not going anywhere.
But not out of spite, but because the IP has value. You don't sell off assets out of the kindness of your heart.
•
u/Mother_Bid_4294 1h ago
Itll just be salvaged for another battlefield event like 2042, they are already doing it with deadspace
•
•
u/Balth-czar 1h ago
Nah you sell them when you are 18 billion in debt
•
•
u/SHansen45 37m ago
it would be like selling the golden goose just because it stopped laying eggs, unless it’s a 9 figures at the very least the sale would be a loss compared what they could make with it in the future
•
u/Jgzerohour 13m ago
Idk after the lackluster reception of andromeda, and the downright negative reception of dragon age vanguard, its very possible mass effect may either get shelved forever or sold off
•
u/-Mez- Normandy 6h ago edited 6h ago
Going to be honest, I'm not sure another studio is going to want to. EA wouldn't let it go cheap assuming they even sold it. And then you're just buying into the problem of how to follow up on the end of the original trilogy and/or Andromeda. You could do smaller scale stories that happen during the events of the original trilogy, but would you pay big bucks to buy the IP to do that...probably not. Bioware has been in the pre-production ideas phase for years and all that tells me is its likely a spaghetti mess that anyone buying would probably have to scrap and start over. Its more likely we see more original spiritual successors like Exodus, assuming Exodus is successful, or game adaptations of existing sci-fi IP like The Expanse.
•
•
u/EdStArFiSh69 5h ago
I have a great idea for this game called Ass Meffect
•
u/EdStArFiSh69 5h ago
I’m coping. Not serious
•
•
u/PeterGriffenttv 6h ago
Even then how long would we have to wait for the announcement of a new game? The one that was in development is just outright cancelled and idk if game assets would transfer after something like that.
If they mentioned in the memo that they were selling off the IP then maybe.
Personally knowing EA I think they’ll treat it like dead space unfortunately
•
u/Pedgrid 6h ago
Those assets has to go somewhere.
•
u/PeterGriffenttv 6h ago
Yeah to their IP vault to be locked in until it’s time to make another battlefield or Apex collab
•
u/RandomOldTank1995 6h ago
EA is an IP goblin.
IF they sold anything (as part of further search for debt money i guess?) then the only possible candidates who could potentially revive ME (and maybe DA too) are Larian and CDPR.
Problem: both are busy with thier own IPs/other projects. Larian is balls deep in Divinity 3 and CDP in Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk "2".
•
u/insomniainc 5h ago
EA has let many IPs rot. This one won't be any different unfortunately.
I think owlcat is your only hope to scratch that ME itch going forward.
•
u/DadGamer77 5h ago
I'm bitter about Command & Conquer
I'm gutted about SimCity
I'm devastated about Mass Effect
•
u/insomniainc 5h ago
Fact that these ips are living on in legally distinct versions like squadron 42 in place of wing commander is sad.
•
•
u/Marineraider25 3h ago
Those greedy Saudis wouldn't let anyone take that IP , they are focused on apex, BF, and sports games which they admitted
Which means they are just after the dollar the micro transactions get them .... fucking scumbags
They literally took over and the first major thing they did was shutdown bioware , fucking wow
•
u/DietQuark 2h ago
I don't think they give a fuck about the money. They have enough of it already.
•
u/Somejawn1 2h ago
I promise you they care about money like everyone else on the planet. And there’s no such thing as enough money
•
•
u/Marineraider25 2h ago
Like somejawn said bro , have you seen the way these billionaires operate , nothing is ever enough for them bro , they always want more and more and more .. .
Its always about the money , they aint satisfied til they have it all , and even if the could have it all , it still wouldn't be e fucking nough
•
•
u/BrianVaughnVoiceOver 18m ago
Give it to VALVE and have them hire Drew and the rest of the team.
That'll be great.
•
u/Perfect_Reserve_9824 14m ago
This is never happening but it would be, imo, the absolute best outcome. Let them spin out whatever Stars of Blood was going to be into a new Mass Effect story. Instant platinum-level classic.
•
u/This_Elk_1460 6m ago
But they've already made a Mass Effect 3 and that's against valve company policy
•
u/ExperienceSilent2018 6h ago edited 6h ago
Ya, someone has the buy the games back now, I guess. $$$. Like, $$$,$$$,$$$ figures.
It would be great if someone had a billion dollars to buy the games back. This may all be part of a reaquisition process but the games aren't coming any time soon, if any of that even happens. Rebrands may be more logical.
•
u/AdNo3558 6h ago
depends on how EA plays this they might transfer say mass effect to another studio they control, sell the ip off or let it sit on a shelf to gather dust
•
u/MediumOk8383 6h ago
If it's not abandoned outright, which is the most likely possibly, then they'll probably give it to another one of their own studios, like DICE.
•
u/RyanBLKST Sniper Rifle 5h ago
Yeah.. that is suck an hopeful thing /s. Dice.. the studio that has to learn how to do an fps at each battlefield
•
u/byfo1991 4h ago
DICE is basically EA at this point. All the original devs went and started Embark.
•
•
u/GapStock9843 37m ago
EA wont sell it. The IP will rot for the foreseeable future, not necessarily out of spite but just because they dont care about it
•
•
u/DrWaDoW 6h ago
Bethesda after Starfield? - No way.
Projekts? Maaaaaaaaaaybe
Seen soneone say Bungie - not in a MILLION years.
Simplest choice is probably Respawn? Jedi games were pretty good & they are part of EA
•
u/Tadpole-Jackson 6h ago
Yeah, I would guess most likely possible scenario is them giving it to Respawn after the Jedi series runs its course in like 10 years
•
u/Nikoper 1h ago edited 45m ago
I wouldn't trust Larian with ME5, not because they're a bad developer, but like with Bioware and anthem, the gameplay that comes with ME doesn't jive with the type of games they make.
Not unless we all become really cool with a heavily turn based RPG probably with cover shooter mechanics, it's not going to be taken well. It would inevitably create a rift in the community.
I COULD trust CDPR with it, but it still wouldn't be nearly as good I think as what old Bioware could've done. It's also likely to be another open world game, and their initial release of cyberpunk kind of stains my initial trust. Maybe they learned their lesson, maybe not.
Obsidian is another maybe, but that also comes with its own set of negatives.
Wild card, if Capcom somehow snatched it up, I think there's potential there, with the unfortunate caviat of a TON of micro transactions
•
u/tallwhiteninja 1h ago
Dragon Age, on the other hand, would be right up Larian's alley. Get away from the overly action-y direction it went and go closer to its roots. Granted, not sure they'd want to do that instead of Divinity.
•
u/jabertsohn 57m ago
Larian is overflowing with ideas already. Dragon age wouldn't be worth anything to them. EA needs to sell to Larian 10 years ago.
•
u/Probably_On_Break 24m ago
Baldur’s Gate III is both a sequel to a BioWare game and has practically identical bones as Origins. A remake of the first DA would probably be the easiest thing on the planet, barring the fact that they wouldn’t really have any reason to, like you said.
Reasoning aside though, I’m not even really sure I want to see another DA without Gaider or at least someone familiar with the setting and characters helming it.
•
u/Stopthatduck 1h ago
Larian have made games that aren’t turn based before, though.
•
u/Nikoper 49m ago
Yea but how many of those are not fantasy and are sci fi? How many of them are over the shoulder action games? And how many if any are dedicated shooters in some form. And which of their games are successful?
Larian's comfort zone is turn based, top down rpgs. With amazing dialogue, and your choices have real effects on the game, etc etc. but if Larian said they were taking ME5, and they were going to do a sci fi action shooter, I'd be really concerned. It's just not what their current studio is good at. They COULD take the risk, but for mass effect I'd rather they didn't. Sci Fi is already out of their comfort zone. A cover based shooter game is already out of their comfort zone. Then also doing a style of gameplay they aren't known for and haven't practiced in decades if at all in the shape of an action game? Concerned. I would not trust that product until I had something playable in hand.
But if Larian were to get ahold of Dragon Age, I'd be more likely to trust that product
•
u/aristnecra 28m ago
Sci-fi and fantasy actually aren’t that different from each other when broken down to the basic elements but I get your concern on everything else
•
u/aristnecra 30m ago
Cyberpunk wasn’t their fault. Developers knew the game wasn’t ready but execs forced a release
•
u/Nikoper 26m ago
I mean whose to say history wouldn't repeat itself?
What you said doesn't exactly make me trust it wouldn't happen again. We have no new game to act as evidence to the contrary. And don't get me wrong I enjoy Cyberpunk NOW, but not at release.
•
u/aristnecra 25m ago
As dumb as execs can be I think they’re smart enough to lear from such a disaster

•
u/Ill-Inevitable3613 4h ago
Larian please
•
u/SarcyBoi41 4h ago
I feel like if they made a Mass Effect game, they would probably let you pick what ME3 ending occured (besides refusal, obviously) and have the world be drastically different depending on that choice. Yes please!
•
u/Oopsiedazy 4h ago
I’d happily take a Mass Effect CRPG with BG3 type cutscenes for the dialogue. Can’t see Larian wanting to do another licensed IP for a while though. They’re never going to get a deal like they did for BG3 again (hell, nobody is. Hasbro dropped the ball so hard and so publicly that no company will ever give a profit split like that to a 3rd party developer again).
•
u/ebagpo 6h ago
Really comes down to EA if they wanna sell it
•
u/TheRealJikker 6h ago
This is the true answer. The IP belongs to EA and you can't buy something that's not for sale. If EA wants to horde it, then there's nothing even the best developers can do to make the game.
•
•
•
u/PhilosopherNo8418 4h ago
EA will never sell while they can still make a few pennies from sales of the games
•
•
u/NuklearFerret 5h ago
CDPR would probably hit a home run with a mass effect game, honestly.
•
u/RyanBLKST Sniper Rifle 5h ago
They would prefer to do their own stuff.
•
u/West_Masterpiece8985 5h ago
The Witcher was a book series beforehand
•
u/RyanBLKST Sniper Rifle 5h ago
Those situations are very different.
A book as srouce material.
- A game as source material.
Situation 2 Means that everyone knows the artistic direction and a bunch of the lore is mainstream. Witcher was niche before the first game.
•
u/NuklearFerret 5h ago
TBH, most of the lore in the ME universe is written in either books or codex entries. To be absolutely clear, a direct sequel to ME3 will likely be shit no matter who makes it. It's a finished story. It's difficult to top reapers as an enemy. It's difficult to raise stakes beyond "the future of intelligent life in the galaxy." ME:A knew that and tried to do something different, but everyone hated it because it wasn't a sequel to ME3. I honestly don't think there's any winning at all from a new ME game, but if anyone can do something cool in-universe, CDPR is definitely at the top of that list.
•
u/RyanBLKST Sniper Rifle 5h ago
It's not about the lore, it's about the artistic direction being already set in stone. So that they have little space to create. It would be really frustrating to tell the artist at CD to just recreate those assets 1 to 1.
•
u/VonDonSchramm 5h ago
The problem with MEA was initially that the game felt incomplete (terrible facial expressions, bugs, etc.). After that, there was the really weak plot with the world/locations and those villain aliens. The SAM storyline and the Andromeda Initiative's secret plot were good, though. MEA had the best gameplay mechanics to build skills. It had potential
•
u/MikalMooni 5h ago
Cyberpunk was a game tho
→ More replies (1)•
u/lunchbawkz 5h ago
I know you're being facetious; but lets play ball.
There's a difference between making a video game off a board game versus wholly continuing a series that belongs to different publisher.
I'd be shocked if EA sells the ME IP. Whatever residual sales they probably still make is just free revenue to them. Whatever price EA attaches to the IP is going to be too much for any outside independent shop to pick up.
→ More replies (2)•
•
u/NikushimiZERO 4h ago
I do wonder why they didn't just sell BioWare and the IP's they have, and my only guess is because they still want to cash in on the merch and future sales from the previous games.
I'm just...numb. These games, DA and ME, were a huge part of my life. Veilguard ended on a cliffhanger, teasing more, and Mass Effect was finally getting another installment...
I can only hope they sell the IP's or someone else picks them up somehow, but with the team behind them disbanded...I do not have high hopes.
•
u/Wobulating 4h ago
Nobody would buy them. Anyone with enough spare money to buy a giant IP like mass effect has their own IPs they'd rather make, and EA won't let random tiny studios get a crack at it and tarnish the IP
•
u/Piffli 3h ago
Not to sound bitter, but there isn't that much tarnishing that could be done.
I was tentatively optimistic for DAV because I did actually like MEA, but I think most of us who kept being somewhat positive gave up after Veilguard.
That being said, I expected it to happen but still sad it did.
•
u/NikushimiZERO 4h ago
Maybe, but still. Idk, just sucks. I guess I'm in the bargaining or delusional stage of grief lol.😅
•
u/MrFluffyBunny25 3h ago
They will probably can the IP for now but might try to do something with it if the Expanse game from Owlcat and Exodus do well, I'm having high hope for those.
•
•
u/Artistic_Bar1693 4h ago
At this point you’re just buying the name of BioWare. Their last 3 games were mediocre to failures no publisher would be looking to buy them.
Mass Effect we all love but that IP is irrelevant now. It’s not worth it unless you could get a guaranteed hit.
•
u/Taolan13 4h ago
If there existed a studio staffed significantly by the OG ME team at bioware, they would be the only studio that could deliver a good game from this IP, but they'd likely need a couple of years to work on it because the recent failures of bioware as a brand would make any publisher balk at throwing too much money in the hat.
•
u/Mah_sentry2 3h ago
I don’t see them selling the IPs, at least not in the near future. There will be an uptick in sales with this announcement, ride the nostalgia wave for about a decade then announce a reboot to renew hype. It’s horrible but EA only cares about $

u/ChimneyCake 6h ago

I doubt anyone will the only chance we get at it and for it to be any good is if the former developers take it over but they are busy with exodus and likely will be with that game for many many years.
•
u/sargantbacon1 6h ago
Its just crazy to me. You’ve got exodus and the expanse on one hand, and then mass effect putting a shotgun in its mouth. If they don’t sell the IP we will likely never see another mass effect game. I’ve tried to make peace with it but now that’s its real it’s so depressing.
•
u/kron123456789 6h ago
Chance of EA selling off Mass Effect is pretty low. They usually not selling IPs of studios they shut down.
•

u/Irreverent_Reality05 5h ago

EA doesn't move IP's around to other studios. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are dead.

u/Yeahthatonefoo 4h ago
The very last flicker of hope is the Mass Effect series...also in development hell 😅 but that's all we got
•
•
u/Time-Yoghurt7831 4h ago
I’m afraid that’s highly unlikely; EA isn’t exactly known for letting go of IPs—they have entire drawers full of franchises just gathering dust, and the BioWare ones have now been added to that drawer to gather dust for a loooong time.
•
u/PiousStag 3h ago
Lots you can do with the IP look at the world of darkness big udget games flopped but many successful small games.

Warhorse. The developers of KCD 1 and 2 would be great for this series. I also think remedy would be a solid choice as well
•
u/RingGiver 2h ago
Considering their last three games, it would have been better to just close the whole thing down before they did any of that.
•
u/Frostlion_II 2h ago
Amazon Games. If the Mass Effect TV show is a critical smash hit it could incentivize Amazon to buy the IP outright if EA was willing to sell.
•
u/TheDutchTexan 2h ago
Any studio who can put together a banger RPG.
Warhorse, CDPR, Larian.
Getting an immersive first person perspective mass effect game with the KCD1&2 story telling would blow my mind.
•
u/Mortarious 2h ago
EA, regardless of our hatred for them, is aware that they own the mass effect IP. Which is a very popular IP and they are aware.
Won't be long until they figure out a studio to develop a new game.
•
•
u/Fickle_Composer_4506 2h ago
Eh, there are some mass effect inspired indie games. Mass effect was a super hard game to make and never really justified it's budget compared to other games at the time. Ea and microsoft are killing games but bioware did fail to adapt.
•
•
•
u/Adeptness-Efficient 1h ago
I'd rather not have anyone take over. Genuinely, I think the IP should rest in peace for a while and not be butchered by greed.
Another developer working on it would likely mean them buying the IP, and that isn't a worthwhile thing for an IP that's been around for a while with a pretty set in stone fan base... If they didn't have full control, then it would be manipulated
•
u/SeengignPaipes 1h ago
Since BioWare isn’t around anymore, I have hopes that maybe EA will sell the IP to another company but I doubt it. Would love to see another developers take on mass effect, maybe CD project red, larian studios, or owlcat games.
•
u/WendyThorne 1h ago
EA will stick these IPs in the corporate equivalent of the warehouse from the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark and we'll never see them again.

Tbh I think it is time to just let this go.
At some point someone will get the idea to make another game that Mass Effect represents of being an epic, choices matter trilogy where decisions matter across all three games.
Maybe EA will opt to make another Mass Effect but it won't be what the series was.
•
u/McFlatbread 5h ago
I would love the guys who made Zero Company to make it. Mass Effect was always more about story than 3rd person action combat.
•
u/VinBarrKRO 5h ago
I feel like we’re so eternally hungry for more instead of being thankful for the well rounded out saga (with bumps, obviously) we got. I’m more grateful that we got a core series that didn’t devolve into something worse than its original intent.
It always happens that way, the base always clamors “more! more!” And then they get more and turn around with “not like that!!!” For me I’ve always got a perfect series in my library to come back to, (and as a massive KOTOR fan I am happy with what we got…who know what’ll happen at FOTOR).
“It’s like the Sopranos: it’s over! Find a new show.”

Only way EA is selling any IP is if they fall on hard enough financial times, so I'm not holding my breath.
