My Hero Academia: All Might the former user of One for all is still an active hero at the beginning of the series using the remnant of OFA after passing it down, he acts as a mentor to Izuku and even after retirement is a teacher at UA.

Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja: The mantle of the ninja is supposed to be passed down, after a certain amount of time. With each ninja getting their minds wiped of memories of being the ninja and their knowledge added to the ninjanomicon before being passed down to the next chosen one. However at least one former Ninja Mac Antfee kept their memories and still tries to get his powers back.

The Life and Times of Juniper Lee: Juniper's Grandma is the former Te Xuan Ze, guardian of balance between the magic world and the human world. The title is passed down her lineage, and while it skipped her son it went to their grandchildren. While retired after spending an unnaturally long time as the te xuan ze, she occasionally joins the fights and acts as a mentor.

Mitsuri Kanroji from Demon Slayer....drawn the typical large-boobed thin-framed manner typical of a lot of female characters in shounen anime, the writers try to claim that her body contains "extremely dense musculature" ....and then does everything in the show to deny that.

Saber from Fate Stay Night....tries to act as if she is overly muscular when her body resembles that of a young teenage girl, not an adult with muscle.

Lore That's not a representation or style choice. That's actually how it is.

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Undertale/Deltarune: Usually in these types of games, the combat scenes are just a way to represent the characters facing off, and in-universe whats going down is what you'd expect a fight to be like. In UT/DR though, we get a lot of examples that shows that what we see on screen is more or less exactly what's happening in-universe. For example, sans' ultimate attack against frisk is to not do anything on his turn, preventing the player from being able to take their own turn, and one fight against Rouxls Kaard has him turn all of the player's commands into ACT, temporarily preventing the player from being able to do anything but dance on their turn

Hi-fi rush: Chai, due to having his music player fused into his heart/power source, perceives the world around him as moving to the beat of the background music and is stronger when he moves and attacks on-beat, while enemies also move on-beat. This is commented on multiple times by other characters as well with his allies also being synced to the beat when Chai swaps with them, implying that the world around chai really is reacting to the music being played instead of it only happening to facilitate rhythm-based gameplay.

Madness combat: All of the characters in madness combat have rayman hands that aren't physically connected to their body and just float nearby. Normally, doing this is just style choice, and it's assumed their hands are connected anyway. However, theres a side episode of madness combat called "an experiment", where we see that it's not just a style choice, their hands really aren't connected, because in the video two scientists trap a grunt's hands in a box and pulls them away from his body.

Personality [Loved Trope] Heart of Gold, Dumb of Ass

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes

When it comes to level of dumbness in a character, I'm not talking like the Too Stupid to Live trope. More akin to The Ditz or Cloudcuckoolander, where they won't press the red button because they're too distracted by the blinking lights on the console. There can be well written airheads that don't dip into absurdity.

  1. Zoey (K-Pop Demon Hunters): Zoey has shades of this, as she initally thought the Saja Boys were magicians and was naive enough to believe Dr. Han's scam. But, she is also responsible for writing the group's songs and can come up with at least 57 solutions upon hearing Rumi's vocal issue. She's also emotionally intelligent enough to be in-tune with her friends' true feelings.
  2. Lindsay (Total Drama): Lindsay has a big heart and pure intentions, but other contestants are frequently annoyed by her lack of smarts, however she also has gone beyond expectations to solve problems in a Columbo-style manner.
  3. Rowley Jefferson (Diary of a Wimpy Kid): Rowley is not very bright and often does silly things that end up getting Greg and himself in trouble, but he has is very caring and always wishes the best for everyone despite his parents' over-protectiveness preventing him from experiencing new things.
  4. Kronk (Emperor's New Groove): Kronk is oblivious, devoid of common sense, and not very intelligent but he is also a genuinely kind person, and enjoys helping those around him. Despite not being as smart as Yzma, he does point out many flaws in her plan and is better at remembering her plans than her.

Van Pelt (Jumanji) - This man-hunting murderer makes it clear that he could easily slay anyone who stands in his way, but the rules of the game forbid him from fatally wounding anyone but the specific player who summoned him.

Killers (Dead By Daylight) - Pawns in the Entity's twisted bloodsport are (usually) forbidden from outright killing their targets. Only after correctly performing enough ritual sacrifices are they permitted to satisfy their own bloodlust.

The Counter of the Mountertain (Squidbillies) - A flesh-eating monster that stalks the Appalachian wilderness in search of vulnerable prey. His obsessive compulsion forces him to extend and retract his claws exactly 36 times before he can attack, which commonly grants his would-be victim ample time to escape.

The Voice (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) - This unseen power (Satan himself?) wants nothing more than to warp you into a pocket dimension where his axe-wielding minion, Dennis, waits to chop you into pieces. He can't do this on a whim, though - consuming the entirety of the Broodwich is a prerequisite to him claiming your soul. Picking off even a single sun-dried tomato will prevent his powers from taking full effect over you.

Characters (Weirdly Specific Trope) Evil Sloths

Good Times Sloth (Memetic): An image of a sloth doing a thumbs up. Whenever anyone sees it they feel a sudden rush of euphoria and will want to keep looking at it and even praise it. A few hours after seeing the image though, their eyes will start bleeding and they become hyper aggressive, behaving like zombies. They’ll try to have others look at the image. Near the end of the story all the infected pile together into a massive tower of flesh while screaming, which anyone who hears this noise will see the sloth in their head, so not even the blind are safe.

SCP-2774 “Slow Burn Sloth” (SCP Foundation) an image of some sort of person dressed in a sloth suit that appears in many forms of media, usually in the background. It only affects you if it has any hues of red or green. There is a 40% chance of a person that sees it being infected, with the chance growing higher if more people are infected. If someone is infected, after 40-100 of seeing the image they will lose their cognitive function and ability to make decisions, only really acting on muscle memory or simple instructions. Every 24 hours, for 150 they’ll become normal and usually they freak out. Mind you they are still conscious during their infected state but are unable to control their actions or do anything, essentially being in a permanent vegetative state. A person that was infected was asked what it was like during the 150 second window and they described it as “It's like, you're being driven around, and you're in the passenger seat, right? Except, your arms and legs are strapped down so that you can't move. Y-you can't feel anything in your body either. The worst part about it is that you can't hold a thought for more than five seconds. It's fucking hell.”

Alpha (Slotherhouse): I can’t really say much about this movie since I haven’t watched it, but like, Bat themed heroes.

Characters [loved trope] The Tsundere is a genuinely really loving person with a very good reason for acting that way

Thumbnail
gallery
309 Upvotes

A lot of the time i find that Tsundere's (or attempts at them) are far, far too mean or act this way for no real reason beyond fitting the archetype. Nagatoro is a good example of what im talking about, and in other cases a character is wrongly labeled a tsundere (Asuka from evangelion).

Toph Beifong: Avatar the Last Airbender

Toph is, by a country mile, the meanest member of her team. She's stubborn, sarcastic, and in classic tsundere style, can never really spit out her feelings. Despite her constant rude behavior and her inferiority complex, she is consistently loyal and honorable. Notably, unlike the rest of the Gaang, she has the least personal stake in actually ending the war. Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko all have familial ties binding them to the conflict, while Toph's motivation is largely the selfish (in a good way) desire to self actualize and prove herself more than her disability.

Her more difficult behavior is all coming from a place of needing to be taken seriously, and distancing herself from the image of being a vulnerable little doll her parents have of her. she's been coddled her entire life despite her being (at the time) tied for the greatest earthbender in the world. Her most defining moment of moral fiber, at least in my opinion, is during an event in which she and Appa--the groups flying bison and Aang's beloved pet, remain aboveground so that Toph can keep an underground library from collapsing on the group.

During this time, poachers attack the pair with the intent of kidnapping Appa. Toph responds by trying her absolute heart out to fight them off with TWO handicaps. First, shes spending an immense amount of effort protecting the library, and second, she's standing on sand, thus disrupting her Tremorsense abilities and rendering her even more blind than usual. Protecting both is clearly impossible, but she still digs her heels in and fights until it becomes clear that in order to save Appa she'd have to drop the library. She has to let him go, and spends a large chunk of the following episodes trying to atone for something that wasnt even her fault to begin with.

Toph is a fairly static character, but even she gets growth revolving around her learning to both rely on others and view her own internal strength in a heroic light... still picks on Sokka because she likes him though.

As a final tidbit, when describing one of her kid's fathers in the sequel series, Toph only offers him praise--specifically for his kindness, and the other male characters she crushes on she does so largely because they're kind as well. Despite her struggles to act on it herself, she values kindness (so long as its not condescending) incredibly highly.

Natsuki: Doki Doki Literature Club

Natsuki is first introduced as a stereotypical tsundere. She cant spit out anything nice without getting embarrassed, calls people mean names she clearly doesnt mean, and is all around kind of rude to the unnamed player character. Similar to toph, a lot of this comes from a place of being seen as childish and patronized. Her more simplistic style of poetry (i personally think shes the best poet in the group but i digress) and perceivably childish love of manga have left her very insecure. On a much darker note, her father is abusive and regularly starves her, resulting in her being underweight and (its implied) having a delayed puberty as well, so she looks even younger than she is.

Alongside her desire to be taken seriously, Natsuki heavily values authenticity and sincerity in how she and others present themselves... and the PC is lying about his intentions in joining the club--which Natsuki suspects. He's there to hang out with cute girls and possibly find a girlfriend, and any rudeness she shows to him beyond her baseline insecurity is completely justified.

Despite this, Natsuki is the most authentic member of the group, and is actually incredibly reasonable. As Monika (who is insane for plot reasons) gradually drives the other two girls, Sayori and Yuri increasingly insane by cranking up the dial on their worst traits (Sayori's clinical depression and Yuri's obsessiveness and inclination towards self harm), Natsuki remains relatively stable. She becomes far more cruel in her comments and insults, but even at the group's absolute worst, she desperately pleads with the PC--who she doesnt even trust--to do whatever he can to help Yuri, who at this point has been told Natsuki to off herself to her face. Even when Yuri is at her most hostile and Monika is acting like a psychopath, Natsuki is empathetic enough to know that this isnt who either of them are and that they need help--which displays a staggering amount of maturity from the character who initially seemed the least mature.

Si: Arknights Endfield

Si is effectively an immortal demigod... who happens to be only "well over a century" years old, making her the youngest of her kind by a longshot. the 13th of 12 (dont ask) VERY old siblings, Si is in a very weird place. She's described as a weird mix of a bratty teen and a cranky old lady, which makes a lot of sense in context.

See, Si is too told and too powerful to connect with most normal people, as anyone her mental age will grow out of it almost immediately, and she's already outlived many of her friends. She's also too young to truly relate and connect with other immortals, including her siblings who left her largely to her own devices, leaving her feeling incredibly lonely.

Her Tsundere tendencies come from feeling the need to present herself as a benevolent deific figure, while also having a very, VERY strong need for companionship that is going completely unmet. This combo means she often acts like she's stern and disappointed, demanding others be sufficiently courteous as befitting her station while instantly crumbling the nanosecond she actually upsets anyone she cares about... or suspects she did... or is anxious they might leave.

In terms of the player character, the Endmin, they are the one real connection she has. The Endmin often overexerts themselves, leading to them being in a medical coma for long periods of time, meaning the endmin is the closest in age and lived experience to her. theyre both deified figures who are seen as living legends, while still being people who put their connections with others as a primary motivator.

Well... the last said medical coma left Endmin with amnesia, so theyve completely forgotten Si. Whoops. She's obviously very hurt by this, even if she knows its not really our fault. She still voluntarily helps everyone that asks (and a lot of the time she beats them to the punch) and her little mini arc in 1.6 focuses on her taking the Endmin through a sort of spirit-quest (its complicated) to cure a spiritual wound they suffered. The entire time she is manipulative and dishonest, trying to get the Endmin to abandon their quest.

Her motivation for doing so is twofold. First, this quest poses a genuine threat to her friend's wellbeing (the equivalent of running a diagnostic on them nearly fucking kills the Endmin), but also because... well... we fucking asked her to. This entire quest was Pre-amnesia Endmins idea as both a test of your resolve, and as a chance for you to choose a different path if this wasnt what you wanted.

Si didnt want to put you through this, but does so anyways because both past and present you insist on it.

Even outside of the arc, all of her interactions have her being mildly rude or annoying at worst, and reading between the lines on basically... anything she says to you translates as "You're really important to me; i'm still important to you, right?"

When another character offers his assistance in your quest, she rudely brushes him off despite him approaching with perfect etiquette, writing him off as an "unnecessary nuisance" using even a single synapse will decipher that what she really means is "he's interrupting my time with you."

---

Si's honestly probably my favorite example of a Tsundere because i never once felt like she went too far or was being that way for no reason. She's an awful liar so no matter what she actually says, the player can always see through her like freshly cleaned glass. It keeps her in the territory the game wants her to be in (endearing). obviously everyone measures these things differently but i found her adorable

Lore Magic users in a world with advanced technology

I see a lot of posts that say; "In a world of knights, dragons and magic, this guy uses a gun lmao" or something like that. But what about the opposite?

"In a world of guns and machinery, this guy uses magic"

To make things clear, we're talking about proper fantasy magic. Like wizards, sorcerers, hocus pocus and spellbooks and shit. Superpowers such as alien biology or mutations don't count.

  1. Merasmus (Team Fortress 2): The world of TF2 is retro sci-fi with cartoonish technology, and then there's Merasmus, a fucking wizard.
  2. The Jedi (Star Wars): Aliens, Droids, Spaceships oh my. And the Jedi? They use The Force.
  3. The Guardians (Destiny): Yes I know they use guns but that also got space magic.
  4. Magic-based Monkeys (Bloons TD6): The monkeys shown are only a few in a world that has high-tech machines, robots and cyborgs (technology in the Bloons world is much more advanced than what it seems.)

- Paul Bunyan from Fate/Grand Order, when she was a kid she could grow as far as you could see and become gigantic, once she becomes a teenager she defaults to an "average" height.

This is implied to be because the change in size is tied to her emotions and she's now insecure about others around her not liking her that much, she now only grows after getting a bunch of likes online.

- Gohan from Dragon Ball, when he was a kid struggling he was a prodigy, strong enough to knock down enemies way older than him and defeat threats not even his dad could.

But as he moved on to an era of peace and dedicated himself to his studies, work and family he continuously slacked off in training and nearly every project he's in he's having to catch back up with a quick training or power up to hold his own in the field, hopefully this stops after his recent movie but who knows.

  1. Walkers (The Walking Dead) : While technically viral in the tv series, if any character dies with their brain intact, they become walkers, bitten or not. When a recently corpse turns into a walker with no bite, it's theorized EVERYONE'S already a carrier.
  2. Zombies (Dead Island 2) : The Autophage (zombiefication) is something built into the human DNA. It was just triggered several generations earlier than expected by SOMETHING ELSE.
  3. The Undead Curse (Dark Souls) : To immortalize his Age of Fire and Gods. Gwyn screwed with the cosmic order of the world, Fire, and Dark (which are tangible and cosmic elements in the setting). One of its byproducts was the Undead Curse, a point in time where everyone possessing a shard of the Dark Soul (all of humanity) turn Undead, the flow of time gets fucky, and Dark starts overflowing and mutating everything else.

Dark Souls 2 reveals that the Age of Fire WILL be replaced by an Age of Dark, only for the process to have been repeated and will repeat ad nauseum.

Dark Souls 3 reveals what happens when even this cycle reaches its end, after it burns the whole world.

The Stone Family - Black Myth: Wukong ( in the image it's the father )

The Mother of Stones is literally a stationary rock that doesn't fight back in Chapter 2, the Father is a minor boss at the beginning of chapter 5 and the Son of Stones is a random optional boss clapping at grasshoppers in Chapter 6. The journal reveals a devastating family tragedy. The Father of Stones abandoned his family to elope with a human girl. When the girl died falling off a cliff, the father went insane and spent decades guarding her skeleton. Back home, the Mother sacrificed all her life essence to empower her Son so he could go find his dad. Because of this, the Mother became paralyzed, and the Son's brain was underdeveloped which is why he got completely lost and ended up wandering Huagou Mountain like a helpless toddler.

(Honestly, half the Yaoguais in this game fit this trope perfectly, but i picked the Stone family for having the most connected storylines)

Rika Orimoto ( The original human ) - Jujutsu Kaisen

She only appears briefly in Yuta’s childhood flashbacks as a sweet girl who gives him a ring, dies in a tragic car accident, and becomes the "Queen of Curses" who basically just Yuta's shikigami nowadays. According to the official fanbook, her mother died mysteriously when she was 5, her father vanished on a mountain trip while she was rescued alone, and her grandma hated her because she believed Rika caused their deaths. Rika also actively used her extreme cuteness to manipulate adults. She was a deeply troubled, codependent child way before she became a curse.

Dean Thomas - Harry Potter He's just Harry’s chill Gryffindor roommate who likes Muggle football, dates Ginny for a bit, and fights in the background. J.K. Rowling revealed that Dean grew up believing his father abandoned him and his Muggle mother. In reality, his dad was a wizard who refused to join the Death Eaters. He left the family to protect them from Voldemort and was murdered shortly after, choosing to die with his family believing he was a deadbeat rather than risking their lives. (This plotline was cut from Book 2 due to length constraints).

Groups [Mixed Trope] Fictional Statocracies: Where the Military is the Government, but it's not a dictatorship

Thumbnail
gallery
369 Upvotes

It's complicated and definitely not recommended, but basically, the military and the state are considered the same. The difference between a military dictatorship and a statocracy is that, in a statocracy, a civilian government still exists.

Examples:

  • Paradis (Attack on Titan) - Paradis was ruled by a shadow monarchy with a fascist/fuedal government that kept humanity in a collective mindset, keeping them ignorant and fearful so that they'd be vulnerable to the day the Titans devoured them all. The government was controlled by merchant guilds and noble houses loyal to House Reiss, who saw people outside the capital as inferior. Erwin then staged a coup, taking down the noble houses and installing the rightful monarch, Historia. Here, Paradis's government was merged with the military, but it technically isn't a dictatorship because information isn't censored, civilian government still exists, and there is freedom of speech. However, after the time skip, the military government makes the same mistakes as the royal government, which led to it being usurped by fascist terrorists known as the Jaegerists; this is a reference to nothing in particular. I like this example because it's not glorified; a big part of AOT's themes is how everyone is flawed and radical choices aren't the best way to go about things, especially with how the revolutionary government became as bad as the original royal government.
  • Frostborne (Fractures) - One of the last surviving human states since the Undead War, the Frostborne are a Tundra-based warrior race that proclaimed themselves as the last bastion of mankind and Vanguards of the Overworld. They're ruled by a Grandmaster, which is kind of like a Commander-in-Chief, originally Theo, but then he died and was replaced by Ser Patrick. That's... all the information on the Frostborne's government, actually...
