  1. Arthur saves Micah (Red Dead Redemption 2)

Arthur is a member of the Van der Linde gang, led by Dutch. One of the gang's newest members is Micah, a bastard whom Arthur and almost everyone else in the gang dislike.

During one of the game's missions, Micah gets arrested, and Dutch asks Arthur to rescue him, which he does. What Arthur doesn't know is that Micah is a traitor who has been feeding information to the authorities, ultimately contributing to the gang's downfall. Depending on the player's choices, Micah may even kill Arthur, but regardless of the ending, he plays a role in causing Arthur's death.

  1. Reece and his team save Ben (The Terminal List and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf)

Reece os the protagonsist of The terminal list, he is a Navy SEAL commander who, without knowing it, was used along with his platoon as a test subject for a drug that was supposed to prevent post-traumatic stress disorder. Instead, the drug caused tumors to develop in all of them.

The person behind this was a billionaire named Kevin Thorn. To carry out his plan, Thorn enlisted Ben Edwards, a former SEAL and Reece's friend, to use Reece's informant to feed him false information about the location of Reece's target, which would lead to the deaths of the entire platoon. Ben was paid $20 million to do this.

However, in The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, which takes place years before these events, Ben was nearly killed after discovering that Haverford, an influential CIA veteran, had helped Iran obtain the technology needed to develop nuclear weapons in an attempt to provoke a war between the United States and Iran. Ben was about to be killed by Haverford's men when Reece and his platoon came to his rescue.

  1. Jack saves Hannibal (Hannibal)

Jack Crawford is an FBI special agent and the head of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit. At the beginning of the show, he recruits Will Graham, an FBI special agent with a remarkable talent for profiling criminals.

The problem is that Will is unstable and has violent tendencies, so Jack decides that he should work with a psychiatrist who can provide therapy and help him with his criminal profiling. That psychiatrist turns out to be Hannibal Lecter. The problem is that Hannibal is a serial killer and cannibal who becomes obsessed with Will and the idea of turning him into a killer himself. Because of this, Hannibal does everything he can to drive Will insane.

One of the things Hannibal does is frame Will for several murders. Even though Will insists that Hannibal is the real culprit, Jack doesn't believe him. While Will is in the psychiatric hospital, he receives a visit from a "fan" who is also a killer. Will asks this fan to kill Hannibal. The fan almost succeeds, but Jack ends up saving Hannibal. Jack obviously comes to regret that decision because of all the harm Hannibal causes afterward, including killing one of Jack's own team members.

Characters' Items/Weapons The "Best" Weapon Is Goofy-Looking

Mr Toots from Red Faction: Armageddon- Arguably the most powerful weapon the game and only available after completing the game once, Mr Toots is a unicorn that fires rainbows from It's butt, causing enemies to explode on contact and requires no reloading.

The Island King from Dark Cloud 2: The best sword Monica can create, The Island King resembles a tiki-inprinted surfboard with leaves and a spinning fan on its forehead. Resembles more of a joke weapon especially amongst the impressive weapon designs of the game.

Characters' Items/Weapons Equipment that’s used for a purpose it wasn’t designed for is finally actually used for that purpose

  1. The Destiny’s Bounty (ninjago): The ninja had added considerable upgrades to the ship allowing it to fly, however it gets damaged in the second season and the ninja end up having to travel to their destination under regular sail power.

  2. The Tardis (doctor who): The exterior of the Tardis is famously disguised as a 1960s police box, but it’s just that—a disguise, generally performing none of the functions that its appearance would suggest. In the 11th episode of series 1 however (the 27th season overall), the Doctor actually does use it to detain an alien criminal, just like how real police boxes were occasionally used to detain human criminals, a similarity that one of the characters even points out.

  3. Riptide (percy jackson): Despite normally appearing as a pen, it transforms into a sword when the cap is removed. It’s only in the House of Hades (the 8th book overall) that Annabeth suggests for Percy to put the cap on the other end of the sword, transforming it back into a now functional pen.

Izuku "Deku" Midoriya, My Hero Academia - In the final battle against All For One, being livestreamed online by Gentle Criminal and La Brava, the world, including heroes fighting alongside him, cheer on Deku as he rushes forward to deal the finishing blow, yelling "YOU CAN DO IT", calling back to Uraraka's interpretation of his nickname.

Rex, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve: Toprak and Tewey are dead and the war Sotoa has been raging has finally come to an end but Enso Order, the multinational conglomerate and decentralized autonomous organization that incited the war, has been destroying any proof of their involvement by blowing up their facilities. The final piece of evidence is a phone that belonged to one of their spies currently being held by D.D. on the FCU Endurance. D.D. livestreams Enso Order's attempts to attack them with a submarine and Rex and his wingmen fighting back in the hopes of getting word out that Enso Order is not to be trusted and is responsible for the whole war. The whole world watches and cheers them on through song and a symbolic raising of their hands to emulate their emblem, the hand of hope.

Both of these scenes made me tear up, ngl.

Lore That's not a representation or style choice. That's actually how it is.

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Undertale/Deltarune: Usually in these types of games, the combat scenes are just a way to represent the characters facing off, and in-universe whats going down is what you'd expect a fight to be like. In UT/DR though, we get a lot of examples that shows that what we see on screen is more or less exactly what's happening in-universe. For example, sans' ultimate attack against frisk is to not do anything on his turn, preventing the player from being able to take their own turn, and one fight against Rouxls Kaard has him turn all of the player's commands into ACT, temporarily preventing the player from being able to do anything but dance on their turn

Hi-fi rush: Chai, due to having his music player fused into his heart/power source, perceives the world around him as moving to the beat of the background music and is stronger when he moves and attacks on-beat, while enemies also move on-beat. This is commented on multiple times by other characters as well with his allies also being synced to the beat when Chai swaps with them, implying that the world around chai really is reacting to the music being played instead of it only happening to facilitate rhythm-based gameplay.

Madness combat: All of the characters in madness combat have rayman hands that aren't physically connected to their body and just float nearby. Normally, doing this is just style choice, and it's assumed their hands are connected anyway. However, theres a side episode of madness combat called "an experiment", where we see that it's not just a style choice, their hands really aren't connected, because in the video two scientists trap a grunt's hands in a box and pulls them away from his body.

Characters [Fun Trope] The old chosen one is still around

Thumbnail

My Hero Academia: All Might the former user of One for all is still an active hero at the beginning of the series using the remnant of OFA after passing it down, he acts as a mentor to Izuku and even after retirement is a teacher at UA.

Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja: The mantle of the ninja is supposed to be passed down, after a certain amount of time. With each ninja getting their minds wiped of memories of being the ninja and their knowledge added to the ninjanomicon before being passed down to the next chosen one. However at least one former Ninja Mac Antfee kept their memories and still tries to get his powers back.

The Life and Times of Juniper Lee: Juniper's Grandma is the former Te Xuan Ze, guardian of balance between the magic world and the human world. The title is passed down her lineage, and while it skipped her son it went to their grandchildren. While retired after spending an unnaturally long time as the te xuan ze, she occasionally joins the fights and acts as a mentor.

Characters The female engineer capable of beating you to a pulp.

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Tali'Zorah - Mass Effect: She was by far the youngest in Mass Effect 1, and above all, she is a woman of action who was trained for her Pilgrimage. She has a combat drone and prefers using shotguns, which are even said to have high recoil. She also frequently repeats swear words in her own language, like bosh'tet. She is widely recognized as the best engineer the Normandy ever had, and by Mass Effect 2, she becomes its Chief Engineering Officer. And when her friends Shepard or Garrus tease her, she threatens them with her shotgun.

Winry Rockbell - Full Metal Alchemist: Although she lacks alchemical powers and is not part of the military in the series, she is an expert mechanical prosthetic (automail) engineer who possesses impressive physical strength. Due to years of carrying heavy tools, lifting metals, and forging heavy parts, Winry has developed muscles and physical strength well above average. However, unlike Tali, she is not a fighter. She often keeps characters stronger than herself in check, like the Elric brothers, who frequently drive her crazy

Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] A female character that is physically strong is given a very thin frame, but the writers try to justify why they refuse to give her muscles in a poorly sufficient manner, or act as if the female character has them.

Mitsuri Kanroji from Demon Slayer....drawn the typical large-boobed thin-framed manner typical of a lot of female characters in shounen anime, the writers try to claim that her body contains "extremely dense musculature" ....and then does everything in the show to deny that.

Saber from Fate Stay Night....tries to act as if she is overly muscular when her body resembles that of a young teenage girl, not an adult with muscle.

Personality Power so great it develops personality

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

When a character has a power, but that power slowly snatches their body because it has a will of it's own.

Ex:

Jean Grey: Over many comics it has a deep connection with a primordial force in the universe which actually wants her to go out and create worlds through the universe.

Legion: The son of Charles Xavier who has way too many powers that start developing into personalities of their own.

Sentry: After being empowered all the darkest corners of his mind snatched his power creating the Void, an entity made of depression and hopelessness.

Hulk: After Bruce Banner absorbs a lot of gamma radiation he starts transforming into a being fueled purely by anger that doesn't share the other feelings with Dr.Banner, developing a personality of it's own with time.

miscellaneous (Mixed Trope) When advertisements for certain media spoils a major plot point/twist (intentional or unintentional). Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes
  1. This Planet of the Apes poster (probably intentional) - Granted, the film had already been out for a year by the time this poster was released, but to anyone who hadn't seen the film; the poster pretty much spoiled the twist that the titular Planet of the Apes was literally a post-apocalyptic Earth the whole time.
  2. The Titan (Deltarune; intentional) - While the trailer didn't exactly make it clear what was going on here, this appears to be a depiction of the reveal of the Sanctuary Titan at the end of Chapter 4.
  3. Literally the title (The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals; intentional) - Realize how the title specifically says "didn't".
  4. The trailer (Abigail; unintentional) - This is a movie that's better to go into blind without the trailer. Why? Because it literally spoils the twist that Abigail is a vampire.

Characters' Items/Weapons [IRL trope] German Armament Naming Deception

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

If I had a Reichsmark for each historical example of this happening in history, I would have three Reichsmarks. Which certainly isn't much, but it's weird that it happened at least thrice. The Germans seem to have had a thing with weapon names and the circumvention of laws surrounding weaponry. Perhaps they still do. These examples are disputed, but that may make their inclusion even more apt for this subreddit. True or fictional, I enjoy this pattern.

Corrections are welcome.

  1. Kriegsmesser — "War Knife"

If it looks like a sword, swings like a sword, and cuts like a sword, then what is it? A knife, of course. This elegantly curved blade became commonplace amongst mercenaries and other commonborn men of violence in the late medieval HRE. It is its hilt construction that technically makes it not a sword.

The popularity of weapons of this sort is attributed to the demand from non-noble warriors for a weapon that would not violate the prohibition on the civilian use of swords — established symbols of noble rank — whilst filling that same niche.

  1. The Mauser Karabiner

The Treaty of Versailles severely curtailed the military capabilities of the post-WWI German armed forces. Among the restrictions was the prohibition of the use of full-length rifles. The solution? Rename the Mauser rifle. Boom. Meet the Karabiner98b — not technically a carbine, but called one anyway.

  1. The MP44 / STG44

The German leader (yes, that one) during WWII was personally invested in the development of weapons for the war effort. The new intermediate-cartridge, medium-range, full-auto weapon that the Germans cooked up in the latter stages of the war came to revolutionise small arms warfare for decades to come, in no small part because it inspired the development of the now ubiquitous Soviet AK47.

However, this hybrid implement, useful in the roles of machinegun, trench weapon, and carbine, did not neatly fit into any of these categories — and the Big Boss preferred to continue improving on the tried and tested weapon types instead of generalist experiments.

Fearing discontinuation, the engineers then named the project "MP (Machinepistol) 44", marketing it as an improvement on automatic pistol-caliber models such as the MP40. It is said that the Big Boss himself, pleased with the weapon's performance, later proposed the "Sturmgewehr" (assault rifle) designation for it.

Characters (Mixed Trope) Christ-like Figures

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Christ figures are characters that sacrifice for others. Their death’s are usually painful and undeserved, often for the sins of others. There is suppose to be some sort of redemption for the characters or catharsis in the audience, but if authors overuse the trope it can become cliched and heavy-handed.

  1. Ellen Ripley - (Aliens 3) Ripley sacrifices herself when she realizes she has a xenomorph incubating inside her. Her sacrifice is not only to save the lives of others, but to prevent the Weyland-Yutani corporation from acquiring a xenomorph.

  2. Sanguinius (Warhammer 40k) Sanguinius is the Primarch of the Blood Angels chapter of Space Magines. He is a genetic superman created to help in the galactic unification of humanity. He stays loyal to the Emperor when his brother rebels, and Sanguinius forsees his own death at the hands of his brother. It is widely believed that his sacrifice allowed the Emperor to destroy Horus and end the heresy.

  3. Jay Gatsby (The Great Gatsby) Gatsby represented the American Dream, and thus he did not fit in with the social elite, but he also held himself above the common man. He was isolated by his success. His murder was engineered by a rich man who took advantage of a grieving man whose problems were all caused by the wealthy guy manipulating him.
