[Fun Trope] The old chosen one is still around
My Hero Academia: All Might the former user of One for all is still an active hero at the beginning of the series using the remnant of OFA after passing it down, he acts as a mentor to Izuku and even after retirement is a teacher at UA.
Randy Cunningham 9th Grade Ninja: The mantle of the ninja is supposed to be passed down, after a certain amount of time. With each ninja getting their minds wiped of memories of being the ninja and their knowledge added to the ninjanomicon before being passed down to the next chosen one. However at least one former Ninja Mac Antfee kept their memories and still tries to get his powers back.
The Life and Times of Juniper Lee: Juniper's Grandma is the former Te Xuan Ze, guardian of balance between the magic world and the human world. The title is passed down her lineage, and while it skipped her son it went to their grandchildren. While retired after spending an unnaturally long time as the te xuan ze, she occasionally joins the fights and acts as a mentor.
You could also count Luke and Leia being alive in the Sequel trilogy, considering Luke's seen as a valid alternative for the Chosen One prophecy, and I'm pretty sure George Lucas wanted Leia to be the Chosen One
In the final season of Doc McStuffins it's revealed that Doc's Grandma could talk with toys as well, she also gives Doc full control of an interdimensional hospital and grants her the power to travel the multiverse (I am not exaggerating, they straight up had a crossover with Winnie the Pooh in another dimension and then stopped a terrorist toy who wanted to enslave and torture everyone)
Yup, Jake and the Neverland Pirates in particular actually got pretty lore-heavy in the final season.
The characters traveled to the real world to avoid history from being rewritten
Norse, Egyptian, Greek and Chinese Mythologies are all real and have several rogue Gods trying to take over the world
Demons are real, genies are real, superhumans and ghosts are real, there's an assassin cult in the island; Hook is actually an expert in Black Magic and so on
I kinda respect the production teams for getting darker with their shows, but I can help but think they had an unspoken agreement to smoke joints and see how far they can take their final seasons before Disney cracked down on them
Sorta? He is not really a chosen one as in like a grand destiny way, he just got a Pokedex and a Starter because Oak had 3 Pokemon to give away and he was around Blue's age and lived in the same town
Mortal Kombat 1, Liu Kang is still around and actually swapped roles with Raiden who is now the chosen one while Liu is the God in charge of protecting Earthrealm.
First off tons of characters like Johnny or Sonya wouldn’t exist at all, secondly you’d need stand ins for them but how do you make a stand in for Jax or other tech based characters? Thirdly you’d run into an issue like Street Fighter 3 where you’d create stand ins but it would be divisive with many seeing the stand ins as lesser than the original, but then you’d get people who want them to stay
If you didn’t know Street Fighter 3 was set far into the future of the series with most characters replaced, Guile replaced with Remy, Zangief replaced with Alex/Hugo etc, problem was the game underperformed as a result but then years later started to really gain recognition, but by then Capcom were backpedaling so hard thst SF4 brought back nearly every SF2 character and set the story before 3, yet by this point SF3 was seen as a classic so they threw in SF3 characters in later versions, then 5 is also set before 3 with less characters from it being added, and now despite SF6 being set after 3 there’s only 2 characters from SF3 after 4 years
You make a new roster? MK1 doesn't have Jax or Sonya playable anyway. You could do a lot of ancestor characters and flesh out the lore of the new world. The Outworlders are 1000s of years old so you can include all of them.
Better than immediately fucking up the lore and continuity forever by introducing multiverse BS like they ended up doing.
MK already had it's new gen game were half the roster were newcomers (MKX) and it did extremely well.
I agree you might run into the issue of creating characters that "aren't as good" as the original or conversely making characters that are so good people demand them in newer games not set in that era. But as for the timeline - I don't really think that matters. As long as you say, canonically, Kung Lao wins the tournament, then any other endings will just be fun "what - ifs"
The entire plot of Gary and his Demons is that Gary has been The Chosen One for 30 years and wants to retire, but unfortunately, there's no new Chosen One. If I'm not mistaken, they usually die before Gary can retire.
In the book The Giver, the original "chosen one" aka The Receiver of Memory is still around. He just becomes The Giver of Memory instead and our protagonist becomes the new Receiver.
Yeahhhhhhhh. I was in the 4th grade when I saw it in the school library and was like "Okie dokey I sure do love books." I was.....not ready for the amount of trauma I'd still be carrying with me into my adult years
Buffy dies by drowning for a short period in the season 1 finale but is brought back by CPR. By the Slayer Rules, another Slayer was chosen. In this case Kendra. Then Kendra dies and Faith comes along in season 3, but the trope is in effect because there’s only supposed to be one Slayer yet Buffy and Kendra/Faith are together the whole time
Neville Longbottom from the Harry Potter series, technically.
There was a prophecy about Voldemort, saying a child born within certain dates would bring about his demise. Among Voldemort and his inner circle, there was some debate about whether the child would be born to Harry's parents or Neville's. Neville's parents were tortured for more information, to the point they were driven insane. Voldemort ultimately decided Harry's parents would be the ones to birth the child, and went to kill Harry after he was born. And the rest is history.
When Harry discovered this prophecy, he asked Dumbledore if Neville was the true Chosen One. Dumbledore told Harry that the prophecy came true due to Voldemort's actions. Neville was the original Chosen One because Voldemort decided it had to be him. Harry became the new Chosen One after Voldemort changed his mind. Voldemort attacked Harry and nearly killed himself, due to a charm powered by his mother trying to protect him. The same thing would have happened had Voldemort gone for Neville. Because no matter how hard one tries, one cannot change the future.
Regardless, both kids played a part in killing Voldemort, as both of them destroyed Horcruxes that were keeping Voldemort alive. So technically, they were both the Chosen One.
Yeah but I’m certain that if Neville became the Chosen One. He would’ve had a better childhood than Harry. Since Neville still has nearly all his magical relatives alive still. Compared to Harry who didn’t
He definitely had a better Main Character story than Harry. Dead parents are one thing, parents tortured into a permanent stay in the wizard asylum is something else.
Chrono Ark does this in a quite literal sense: The main antagonist created a whole fake world trapped in an infinite time loop long before the game starts, decided to set up a whole fake plot and story for his world, and chose someone as the 'Girl of Prophecy' who is supposed to help save the world as she is the only one that can find the MacGuffins, because he made her the only one who can find them. Now, the MacGuffins don't actually do anything, and the thing they think saves the world just restarts the loop (same with the death of the chosen one or her spending too long without reaching the end), but the antagonist made her as the chosen one and made it where she retains subconscious memories between the loop so that she could grow and improve and serve as a bit of a random element changing up the loops even without the antagonist's direct intervention.
The person he chose was a little girl named Lucy, specifically because he despised her Dad and set her Dad up as the final boss of the fake plot, trapped in armor controlling his every movement and remembering each loop, so that he either murders his daughter against his will or gets killed by her over and over again. The antagonist also set it up where she was the only one who could land the killing blow, and where she has amnesia at the start of every loop so she remembers nothing outside of the loop and doesn't recognize him.
Caster Artoria and Morgan le Fay - Fate/Grand Order
The story of the 6th Lostbelt, Avalon le Fae, focuses on the titular Avalon le Fae, a messiah-like figure birthed from the planet itself whose destiny is to complete a pilgrimage across Faerie Britain to save the realm from a generational curse. The previous Avalon le Fae was named Aesc, and she would have accomplished her mission if not for the Fae she was trying to save being pieces of shit. After that, Aesc would take the throne of Faerie Britain, under the name Morgan.
By the time the next Avalon le Fae, Caster Artoria, is born to finish what the previous one couldn't, her predecessor, Morgan, aka Aesc, is still around as Queen.
Fallout: DUST - Turns out Courier 6 is still around. There's conflicting reports on what exactly The Courier was up to during the Second Battle Of Hoover Dam, but when the Mojave started going to shit due to outside factors (NCR corruption, Elijah's scheming, The Tunnelers, ETC.), Six was blamed for the disasters and branded a terrorist. He fled to Mead Canyon and booby-trapped it to ass and back. In the present, he's gone completely insane and spends his days torturing and mutilating anything that manages to reach his cave. There's a mod that turns him into a Companion, but people don't seem to use it much.
That mod and the one for Fallout 4 are fucking hilarious to me. It's all just so fucking teen edgelord EDGY. Just real "I'm 15 and humanity fucking sucks man." Energy
Kinda, yeah. XD The lore is kinda grimderp LMFAO. But the ambience keeps me going back to it sometimes. Plus, newer mods and fixes made by folks really help too.
FROST I haven't played personally but I have seen playthroughs of. It does seem slightly-better written/designed, but given vanilla FO4 Survival is already the equivalent of sandpapering your skin, I dunno if I have the stomach to ever try it personally even if my PC wasn't a decades-old clunker and could handle it.
i only read "fucking teen edgelord EDGY" and immediatly thought they were refering to the thuggysmurf or whatever his name mods. Jesus they're the pinacle of an edgy redditor, but with actual modding skills
Football Prodigy Cameron 'Cam' Cade goes to a ruthless training camp run by the... eccentric QB1 Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans) of the fictional San Antonio Saviors. Isaiah is the GOAT himself, and being told it's time to train his own successor means a treacherous off-season for Cam.
You've got to see this shit, folks. It's one of the most hilariously bad movies made in years. Terrible dialogue, obnoxious music, epic cinematography, embarrassing performances. They really thought they were making Suspiria for football fans.
Maybe the biggest gap in quality of trailer vs the actual movie this century. Marketing team earned every fricking dollar on that one - the Gatorade ad turned horror movie was so sick.
Honestly I think the idea did have a lot of potential, but the execution was just hilariously awful. Suspiria for football fans but terrible is such an apt description.
Several other Arisen populate the world, though there is only one "true" Arisen. Many others who you meet freely admit they lacked the will or failed in their attempt to slay their dragon.
The drakes that you encounter in the world are Arisen who have totally given up their charge.
Dragon Age Inquisition: part way though the game the "Hero of Kirkwall" Hawke (the player character from the previous game) who the Inquisition initially had chosen to be their leader before the current PC shows up, makes a suprise appearance after another character had led everyone to belive they were missing or dead.
The Magicians. Martin Chatwin was originally the chosen one via Narnia-esque kidnapping. The gods chose him and his family to experience their world, but kicked him out because they thought his trauma made him boring. Quentin ends up being the next "chosen one", but notice that I put that in quotes because the show tries to portray him as sort of an anti-chosen one.
Paranatural is a webcomic about middle schoolers in a club that fight ghosts haunting their small, weird town of Mayview. Their teacher/mentor Mr. Spender, saved the town many years prior when HE was in middle school, defeating the most powerful spirit and gaining the title of the strongest, although he certainly disagrees with that title and does NOT let the kids in on his reputation
Heavily implied, not directly stated, iirc, the Aged Man is a Prophet from a previous Cycle who tried to guide humanity to a better future, one of Enderal’s endings. However, he failed, hence why he mocks the player’s ambitions to try to stop the Cleansing and mopes out of the situation to save himself and his loved one.
Dragon's Dogma does this in multiple ways, showing the different ways the chosen one (the arisen) can end up depending on their choices/failures as the hero
Fae Tactics: You spend a large portion of the game looking for your Mom, and you actually find her and have her join the party. She clearly had her own whole story in the past and the antagonist is actually far more focused on her than you, and I also learned eventually that she is the protagonist of a previous game by the developers.
So the old chosen one is still around, it is your Mom, she joins your party and doesn't die, and she is actually really good.
In Garo, every Title knight can only have one armor that will choose it wielder and when the sanctum of Garo is attack by a family enemy the dead predecessor (The Grandfather), the previous wielder (Father) and the current wielder (Son) is summoned to defend it while sharing the armor.
The whole plot of lanterns basically, hal was once h the chosen one of earth’s space sector but then john comes around and they make Hal train John and their whole tension and dynamic is built around Hal loosing his place and John being better as a Green Lantern.
Rave Master, the previous holder of the Rave Stone Shiba becomes the mentor to the current Rave Master Haru and gives him the sword that he forged to wield there power.
The toa metru are a group of toa that are expressly said to have been matoran chosen by Mata Nui to become Toa and serve a grand purpose. Their purpose evidently is rescue the Matoran of metru nui and start mata nui and guide the next 2 generations of toa (mata and inika) as the turaga.
Yuta, the literal protagonist of the previous series, shows up to fill in the mentor role when Gojo is sealed and fights Yuji, the protagonist of the successor series, in his first appearance in JJK before quickly revealing his status as an ally.

Anakin is still around in the form of Vader in Star Wars.
