Use the appropriate support channel for your distribution. Arch is DIY distribution and we expect you to guide us through your system when providing support. Using an installer defeats this expectation.

Why was the beginners guide removed?

It carried a lot of maintenance on the wiki admin as it duplicated a lot of information, and everyone wanted their addition included. It was scrapped for a compact model that largely referenced the main wiki pages.

SHARE Arch is great for software development

I make websites and apps for fun when I get some free time, used other distros earlier, they were good as well, but arch just feels snappier, when I am compiling stuff or building some app. Particularly useful for my potato laptop i.e. ThinkPad E14 gen 2, I built a Napoleon themed to do list app, it's completely functional, just install and go, should I share it ?

DISCUSSION Regarding recent Emudra CA intermediary cert leaks and php RCE

For the Emudra private cert leaks firefox has already revoked them through onecrl. As far as I know there is no browser update needed for this. But vpns also use tls but I haven't heard any news from proton(what I use). Please let me know where else tls is used like curl or wget maybe and if manual intervention is expected.

For the php RCE there isn't much news except for its real. But the CVE is given 9.2 which is quite high. Php2shell is being thrown meaning it could be a shell spawning RCE. Let me know if I'm missing anything.

DISCUSSION What Are Some Things You Wish Linux Had ?

I have a CS graduation project this year, and I really wanna make it about Linux since I'm really into it and operating systems in general.

So, as the title says, what are some things you wish existed on Linux?

I'm looking for ideas that solve actual problems or fill some gaps in the Linux ecosystem. Nothing too crazy like building an entire distro from scratch xd, but something big enough to make a solid graduation project out of.

I'd love to hear your ideas, whether it's a missing tool, an app, a feature, or anything you think Linux could really use

DISCUSSION Anyone Else Like Ephemeral Arch Installs Running In Memory?

I always seem to have a problem with letting my OS become stale over years, where I have files all over the place and whenever I want to reinstall a new OS I backup everything and end up never looking at it again, but do it just in case.

I got tired of cluttering myself so instead Ive been enjoying booting arch on ventoy, using all my ram for cowspace, and installing whatever I need and clone my git repo containing all my custom configs.

Then when I power off, everything is destroyed until I boot it up again.

I find that it keeps me a lot more organized, and keeps my OS declutterred. I think im just autistic

SUPPORT [Help] Built-in microphone misses speech when I speak quickly on Arch Linux (PipeWire, Realtek ALC294)

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with my built-in microphone on Arch Linux. When I speak quickly, parts of my speech don't seem to be captured properly. This makes my voice difficult to understand in recordings or voice communication.

I've also experienced a high-pitched, electrical/whining noise during microphone tests.

I'm looking for help identifying whether this is related to the ALSA driver, PipeWire, microphone gain, audio processing, or something else.

System information

  • Laptop: ASUS Vivobook Pro 15
  • Distribution: Arch Linux
  • Kernel: 7.0.12-arch1-1
  • Audio server: PipeWire 1.6.7
  • Session manager: WirePlumber 0.5.15
  • ALSA: 1.2.16
  • Audio codec: Realtek ALC294
  • Audio driver: snd_hda_intel
  • Audio processing packages: EasyEffects 8.2.8-1, RNNoise 0.2-1
  • Firmware package: sof-firmware 2025.12.2-1
  • Window manager: i3

Problem description

  1. My microphone does not capture my speech properly when I speak quickly.
  2. I've also encountered high-pitched electrical/whining noise during microphone tests.
  3. I've experimented with microphone boost and volume settings, but haven't resolved the issue.

I'm not yet sure whether the missing speech and the electrical noise share the same cause.

SUPPORT External monitor black screen on Arch Linux with NVIDIA RTX 3050

Hi, I'm running Arch Linux with i3 on Xorg on an Acer Nitro V 15

My laptop screen works fine, but my external HDMI monitor shows only a black screen with a movable cursor.

Specs:

  • AMD Radeon 680M iGPU
  • NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (nouveau driver)
  • Kernel 7.2.11
  • Xorg + i3

The monitor is detected by xrandr at 1920×1080, but nothing else appears. Xorg logs show glamor initialization failed and Refusing to try glamor on llvmpipe.

I've tried restarting i3, toggling the display with xrandr, and running xcompmgr, but nothing helped.

How can I fix this?

QUESTION Why is it taking so long to get the new Linux 7.3 and KDE Plasma 6.8.1 updates?

I thought Arch Linux was supposed to get the latest updates as soon as they roll out, but it has been several days waiting for these updates and they don't seem to be in the testing repos either, what's up with that?

Edit: Plasma update went out, thanks to whoever did that :)

QUESTION Ubuntu Touch is growing. What about Arch on ARM?

Hi everyone,
I've been following Ubuntu Touch, and it got me thinking about where CachyOS (or similar arch based distro) could fit. The UBports foundation now has 800+ volunteers, an installer, and a supported device list that includes the Pixel, OnePlus, Fairphone, and Volla phones. Their latest releases, 24.04 1.1 and 20.04 OTA-11, show a mature, organized effort to run Linux on ARM hardware.
What nobody has built yet is a performance-first, gaming-focused option. Phones and ARM handhelds like the Retroid Pocket and AYN Odin have capable Snapdragon chips, but they're stuck with Android or general-purpose mobile Linux. CachyOS has shown that an Arch-based distro can be fast, polished, and tuned for gaming. ARM is the obvious next frontier.
I know the hard parts aren't only the distro: locked bootloaders, proprietary GPU drivers, and vendor kernels. I also know Arch Linux ARM is a separate project from Arch itself. But I think a small start could work:

SUPPORT Shift and ctrl keys not working?

Installed arch on a old toshiba satellite laptop. However in the TTY (whatever the barebone terminal is. Sorry for being new in advance) the shift key wont work so i cant type symbols and such. Anyways managed to get cinnamon installed then wanted to switch the the tty terminal to install some things i forgot... well the ctrl key dont work for that. So i open xev and try to see if they keys are even registering.... nothing.

Both shift and ctrl keys on either side dont work so i think unlikely to be a hardware issue. Especially since it worked a day earlier.

Any help will be appreciated. Dont be afraid to call me stupid.

Thanks

QUESTION Any pacman hook to show package changelogs?

Yeah, I know pacman -Qc. But seems it's unavailable for 99.9% packages. Anything that can fetch changelog from upstream? (Maybe at least for GitHub).

Asking because I'm thinking about building one.

SHARE hyprland: Detect programs using XWayland

I wanted to find all software still using XWayland on my system, so I added some lines to my hyprland.lua config file. That's probably trivial for the most of you, but I still wanted to share it. Just add this to the end of your config file and you'll get a notification whenever a software opens a window that relies on XWayland:

hl.on("window.open", function(w)
if w.xwayland then
hl.notification.create({ text = "Window uses XWayland: " .. w.title, timeout = 5000, icon = "warning" })
end
end)

What I found so far:

  • steam (and every menu it opens)
  • vlc
  • ...

DISCUSSION Avahi hidden from the app launcher by default now

Really happy about the update that hides Avahi from the app menu by default. Small change, big difference.

More clutter that could get the same treatment,

- haruna depending on libmpv instead of the full mpv package

- kate without kwrited

- and the plasma-desktop without the full Qt development toolkit

- Helper tools like lstopo, qvidcap, and qv4l2 showing up in the menu.

Big thanks to the maintainers and the community for keeping Arch such a great distro

SUPPORT Wine 11.20 won't work on my system

I'm running a thinkpad T530 with an NVS-5400M. This detail might be important since it uses the legacy 390 driver, however I have that set up and I've been able to play Roblox and run webgl games. I've made sure that the NVIDIA gpu is the ONLY gpu active in the system as well (IGPU disabled in bios). However trying to launch winecfg just results in failure. It will hang on the terminal and CRTL+C wont even stop it (I have to run wineserver -k). However I found out that older wine versions seem to work, as I tried using the flatpak version and it ran. (I also ran FreeBSD on this laptop, and downgrading wine fixed the SAME issue).

[myson010@wifibox ~]$ winecfg

(it hangs here)

I found out that disabling all gpus (by deleting the xorg config file) and running on framebuffer allowed wine to display a picture. Running wine in software rendering with the NVIDIA GPU active did not work.

SUPPORT Black screen on install

Hi, I'm trying to install Arch Linux on my PC, but I'm getting a black screen. To be specific: I boot the PC from the flash drive, it takes me to the boot menu, but once I select the install option, it just goes completely black.

After looking into it, I found out this is a fairly common issue with Nvidia GPUs, so I tried passing the nomodeset parameter. I tried with just nomodeset and got nothing, then I also tried i915.modeset=0 and nouveau.modeset=0 for both the Intel and Nvidia graphics cards, but still nothing. I even tried adding the debug parameter just to see if it would print anything to the screen, but still nothing—just a black screen. I tried also an external monitor, same issue

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

PC Asus N552VX

CPU Intel core i7 6700HQ GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 950m

P.S. I tried redownloading the iso and I tried also with cachy os just to try another os, same problem

SHARE Vela Desktop Environment

Hello, I'm currently working at Vela, a new Desktop Environment based on wlroots but with a custom Vulkan 1.4 renderer and without OpenGL or software fallback.

This is currently alpha software, even though I daily run it and it's great to me.

I'm currently looking for testers, especially nvidia testers but in general people who runs arch with kde (should run also with gnome but not tested).

Vela currently needs kde plasma just because inherits icons, fonts, kwallet and something else; no kwin as I said Vela has a custom renderer.

Vela's motto is Modern, Fluid, Sharp, Efficient. These are not only words, I invite all of you to check the architecture in the repo docs/

It currently has a file manager and a settings app where you can customize the shell a bit.

Customization will be a focus in Vela, but for now there aren't a lot of options, since this is an alpha.

At the moment Vela is very similar to Windows 11 UI, because I like it. But in the next weeks will come a major redesign which I'm working a lot on with a friend of mine. Vela will soon have his identity.

AI Disclosure: this post is made by me; Vela code is 100% written by AI, but is reviewed by me as an experienced developer and I make all the architectural and design decisions.

Requirements: A GPU which supports Vulkan 1.4

Repo: Github

There's already an automated installer and updater, also an automated vela-report to fill some useful informations for mantainers.

Thanks for reading :)

SHARE 5 months of Linux development: my first program, ScreenGuard, reaches beta.6!

Its been 5 months since I first started my first project , a personal project it was to monitor my own screen time and prevent distractions .

After support from a small group of people and with personal curiosity to learn to code in C and Dart(which was already a known language from my previous experience) , I continue to improve the software with newer support aiming for a greater goal- modular daemons complementary to usagestatsservice, appopsservice and other necessary device care and wellbeing services in linux natively.

This is the reason that I believe learning C is important and becoming handy in moving away from a dart based daemon.

Most importantly the views of the Linux community, both sweet and harsh and some ridiculously disgusting have shaped my intuition about FOSS which is VASTLY different from a 9 to 5 at a tech corporate.

What brings me joys the most is that the application which begun as a small project

"Late nights in the middle of June" has now come to a substantial development level after 5 months .

A few notable upgrades this release are remapped settings menu, autonomous crash reporting system and database controls . Also strict mode has been made optional to prevent windows from closing by default via pkill which could lead to unsaved work loss (just incase someone has a daily limit set for such an application)

For more details you can check the release page and docs attached.

I would love to continue receiving feedback and testers from the community in the scope to see how much better I can make this into. All sorths of feedback are welcomed as it should be.

Thank you everyone for providing a platform to vent out a personal project and also thanks to the couple hundred people who used the application. Please do leave a feedback.
