“Beginning under Mayor Koch in 1981, dozens of houses of worship partnered with drop-in centers to shelter New Yorkers experiencing homelessness each evening. The model was relatively simple: guests would arrive at a drop-in center and be bussed to a participating house of worship staffed by volunteers, where they would receive a warm bed, showers, dinner, and breakfast.
Only a few people would stay in each space on a given night—a stark contrast to large congregate shelters where hundreds might sleep barracks-style in a single room. In the morning, guests would be transported back to the drop-in center. For decades, this transient but reliable system provided a dignified alternative for people reluctant to enter the city’s crowded municipal shelter system.
Then came COVID, and our city’s shelter system moved away from congregate settings. Funding for transportation to and from drop-in centers dried up. Many volunteers understandably stayed home. The house of worship-based shelter network went comatose, and six years later, we still have not rebuilt the infrastructure needed to wake it up.”

A retired NYPD cop was taken into custody Wednesday for the shooting death of a Con Ed worker during a road rage clash on the George Washington Bridge, police officials said Wednesday.
The suspect, who retired from the NYPD 25 years ago, is the driver of a black Range Rover that police have video showing was involved in the slay on the New Jersey-bound upper level of the Hudson River span about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The suspect is currently at the 33rd Precinct stationhouse with charges pending, NYPD officials said.
MSG Sports is spinning off its New York Rangers hockey business from the Knicks. The Rangers are chasing an end to their own drought: The Broadway Blueshirts haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1994.
The two businesses will be renamed and trade independently after the spin-off, a structure that could make it easier to sell either team separately down the road—or simply give investors better visibility into what each is worth.
Investors and sports fans can now take their shot at becoming partial owners of one or both teams through pure-play sports stocks, or just pass. There are headwinds: Higher inflation could stymie revenue growth, regional cable fees are shrinking, and valuations look stretched after the shares have gained more than 50% this year.
The parent company’s stock hit all-time highs on a heater of its own during the Knicks’ run to the title, and it has stayed near those levels since the board approved final terms of the split, which MSG Sports announced on Sept. 30.

Hoping to find the person who took photos of my Central Park proposal at The Lake across from The San Remo building on 12/24/25 at around 10:45am
I had filmed the proposal but didnt have photos taken. I noticed a person had taken photos, but at the time didnt think to ask them for the photos.
I know its a long shot, but if anyone knows who may have taken the photo, not sure whether it was a student, hobbyist, or a professional, but I would love the opportunity to purchase the photo if possible.

New York City Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels faced a public grilling by New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones at a school integration town hall Tuesday night over his lack of a detailed plan to address inequality in city public schools, more than 10 months into the new mayoral administration.
The Brooklyn-based civil rights writer recently published a follow-up essay about her decision to put her daughter in a racially segregated school, outlining how her daughter was having a hard time keeping up in the high school of her choice as a result, and renewed calls for a citywide school integration plan.
“The people who keep getting told they have to wait for the ‘right time’ are the people who need public schools the most,” Hannah-Jones said at the Washington Irving Campus near Union Square in Manhattan.
“You have to understand the discontent with this. It’s 10 months in,” she told Samuels. “When a timeline can’t be offered, you can understand why people will feel like that means you are just delaying.”
