MOVING MEGATHREAD Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread

To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.

Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:

Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:

  • Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
  • Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

question Volunteering in or near Poughkeepsie?

I'm interested in volunteering in Central Dutchess County. Does anyone have recommendations, specifically for helping people? I love animals but feel like I'd like to help people who need it. I'm thinking a soup kitchen or something similar. I've emailed a few places, and the emails came back as invalid.

Thanks in advance.

Affordable Wedding Venues

Hi,

Looking to get married in a venue for like 50-60 people. I know there is no such thing as a truly "affordable wedding" but if anyone knows of a nice small venues that may be under 50-60k?

Seeking recommendations for hospital birth

Hi! I am new(ish) to the area and need to select an OBGYN for my upcoming childbirth. I have the option of selecting a practice that either delivers out of Montefiore St Luke’s, or Nee York Presbyterian in Cold Spring.

If you are familiar with the birthing centers or OB practices at either of these hospitals, can you share any info you might have?

Thank you!!

question Could Hudson Valley races be key to Democrats regaining supermajority in state Senate?

Democrats hold 41 of the state Senate's 63 seats. If they flip one more Republican-held seat, they'd regain the two-thirds supermajority they lost in 2024.

We've been reporting on that here: https://www.capitolconfidential.com/p/new-york-state-senate-races-2026

One of the races we're watching is District 39, which covers Dutchess, Orange and Putnam counties. Republican state Sen. Rob Rolison is running against Lisa Kaul, a Dutchess County legislator. Rolison won reelection in 2024 by less than two points.

Essentially, a supermajority would let Democrats override the governor's veto without Republican votes. It could also give them more room to pass controversial bills, since a few Democrats could vote against a measure without blocking it. Republicans told us that a larger Democratic majority would make the party less responsive to swing voters.

What issues are shaping your view of the District 39 race (or any state race this year)? And would a Democratic supermajority mean for you?

Great jack o lantern blaze

Spend $150 dollars on tickets and was so underwhelmed at the great jack o lantern blaze. I know the hard work that goes into it but what a bummer to spend so much $$ for a quick walk through. Anyone else feel this way? It’s the biggest attraction in the area this time of year and it’s way overpriced for what it actually is .

Where in the Hudson Valley has the most venomous snakes

I have seen a lot of them crossing the country roads and some actually chilling on the roadway. Reasons why I don't go hiking in the summer, but only in the winter.

events Live music in Hudson?

Visiting Hudson tonight and tomorrow to celebrate my grandmothers birthday. I was hoping there would be live music, karaoke, or something to do but can’t seem to find anything. I would be grateful for any recommendations. :)

Starting a Hudson Valley "Do Stuff" Club

I really need to do better about being social and getting out of the house sometimes, and I know I'm not the only one!

So I decided to try to get an informal group together to encourage myself and others to make new connections in the community, socialize, and arrange meetups for events, dining, games and so forth.

Is there a game plan? Not really!

Is there a Discord server? You bet!

The Do-Stuff Club is open to all adults in the Hudson Valley region and surrounding areas. Come on by, post a picture of your cat or dog, and plug your favorite place to eat, book, or game.

question The Belvedere Mansion in Staatsburg

I see The Belvedere Mansion in Staatsburg is for sale. Does anyone know if it's open for business now? The telephone number I found for them is not in service and one of their domains forwards to the owner's company (who doesn't answer emails), while the other one is listed for sale.

question Getting a job at the DOT in PK?

Im not sure if anyone can give me some knowledge about this. But is the DOT actually hiring for the highway maintenance worker posting? The job posting is listed open for the entirety of the year. It looks like the trainee level 1 doesnt need a CDL but level 2 does. Can I get hired as level 1 then get my cdl while im there? Is that how that works. Or do they just expect applicants to already have their cdl before they get hired? Do they actually contact previous employers as a reference? I just want to plow snow this winter.
