Urgent help near 26th & 5th Ave — Valacyclovir (Valtrex)

Hi everyone,
My wife is visiting Manhattan and accidentally left her medication, valacyclovir (Valtrex), at home in Canada. She’s starting to have a herpes outbreak, and anyone who’s dealt with this knows how painful it can get and how important it is to start treatment early.
She’s around 26th Street and 5th Avenue.
We’re having trouble getting her medication without a prescription or an expensive ER visit.
If anyone has been in a similar situation or knows a pharmacy, telehealth service, or urgent care that could help her get a prescription quickly tonight, we’d be incredibly grateful for any advice.
We’re happy to cover any reasonable costs.
Thank you so much!

UPDATE, situation solved! Thank you everyone!

Question Vet Recommendations for small dogs

Hi ! Any recommendations for a vet who’s especially good with small dogs?

I had such a stressful experience with my current vet today.

Cost isn’t an issue. I’m looking for a highly skilled and experienced vet, especially when it comes to handling and performing procedures on small dogs.

Are paid classes or clubs worth it for meeting people in NYC?

I’m trying to expand my social circle and meet people who are curious, driven, and doing interesting things with their lives.

Have you noticed a difference in the crowd at paid activities like cooking courses, pottery classes, or membership clubs versus free meetups or going to bars?

Happy to pay for something worthwhile, especially if it’s recurring. What’s actually worked for you, and where would you recommend?

Lost Engagement Ring

Just got proposed to and lost my engagement ring in the same day, yesterday.

It feels so awful and it slipped off my finger steps away from the entrance to Arlo Nomad hotel.

If you see it (it's worth a shot), please let me know.
I've already filed a police report along with a basin report.

I can't believe this happened. Been sobbing for the last 12 hours and looking on the street nonstop. Feels like total bad juju.

The City makes NYC FHEPS so much worse than it needs to be

In February of 2025, I lost my mother... I inherited her house (which had a reverse mortgage, so I refinanced and I have a mortgage)

So I am the landlord in this situation.

I had to evict the downstairs tenants for non payment of rent... and I tried being nice and told them I wouldn't evict them if they would just move out... after 4 months of non-payment, I filed eviction and won... that took an additional 6 months.

The downstairs apartment rented quickly, and my husband and I worked on emptying the 2nd floor apartment (where my mother lived... this was emotional, so yes it took a while) and then we started showing it for rent.

There was a very nice mother with 2 little girls who came to see it. She is a single mother who has been evicted by the court (because her husband left her and she could not afford her current rent without him) and the marshals could come any moment to forcibly remove her.

She has a FHEPS voucher... which originally I wasn't going to deal with because I always worry if they lose that voucher that I will have to go through eviction again... and I really don't want to lose my mother's house because I can't pay the mortgage.

I agreed to start the paperwork for her because I was a single mother, and our stories were somewhat similar and I felt for the woman.

I called her caseworker for 3 days and left messages with no response... then I finally got an email for the caseworker and started emailing her. I sent her pictures of the apartment, the rent I was asking, and the name of her client... letting her know I really wanted to help this family. The case worker sent me the link for pre-certification. I filled out the paperwork, and 3 days later received a fail because the city wanted me to lower the rent. (The caseworker could have said this in her FIRST email when she sent me the link)

I went back and forth with the case worker trying to find out what they wanted to pay for rent... I ended up getting this information from the prospective tenant, and I re-applied immediately.

Three days later, I received a response that said rent pending... with an added section that said 2 bedroom apartment should only have 4 rooms... apparently the city has never heard of a dining room. I forwarded this response to the case worker and asked for clarification... after 7 days she emailed me back and asked for my contact information. I immediately sent her my phone number (which she could have read her previous emails to find because it was included in EVERY email) and she never called.

Today, I find out from the prospective tenant, that pre-cert failed because 2 bedroom apartments only have 4 rooms...

I went and filled out the pre-certification paperwork again, and lied and said the apartment only has 4 rooms... and now I have to wait until sometime next week for a response. I then emailed the caseworker, her supervisor and the supervisor's supervisor and told them that it is shameful that I am working harder to keep this woman out of a shelter than they are.

It has been WEEKS, that I am struggling to get my apartment approved for someone with an "emergency time sensitive pre-clearance"

The caseworker claims that if I pass Pre-certification that the inspection will be done immediately because this is an emergency... and I am not really trusting her anymore at this point. She also told me there is an incentive of a full month's rent for holding the apartment, BUT she won't tell me when I receive that, or if there are additional qualifications for it.

All of this stress is why people don't WANT to accept vouchers... I agreed to hold this apartment for this family, and the city is playing games. She will wind up in a shelter if they don't pull their act together... and meanwhile I still have a mortgage to pay.

I understand there are a LOT of people who need help, but if I am trying so hard to help this family, why is the city holding up the process for stupidity instead of letting this family get settled and have peace of mind?

Update 1: The caseworker finally called me, and said that she was calling because she saw I had sent a lengthy email (which she didn't read) then asked why I contacted her. I explained about the 4 room/5 room thing and she said that made no sense. She then asked me to send her that paperwork, and I told her to look at her email on 10/9 because that is when I sent it to her and asked what I should do. She then proceeded to get nasty and told me that the client wouldn't be moving in until December 1st because I still had to pass pre-cert, and wait for an inspection, and then start the application paperwork with all the documents. I asked her to send me the application and list of documents now so I could hand it in on the day of the inspection... and she told me it doesn't work that way... everything needs to be done in order. I responded that it seemed to me like she was the one holding up the emergency client, and I was bending over backwards to try to help her. She then told me that the marshals could not come and throw the client out because she was supposed to get an extension with her voucher (as far as I can find from google, this is either not true, or not an extension for as long as Cambra takes to work things out) The helpline we are calling states that she most certainly can be forcibly evicted that is why her status is "emergency" because the eviction process was completed in court.

My Midtown East visit

Many thanks to the travel tips I got here earlier! Travel between JFK and the Hilton Garden Inn on E 52nd was a breeze. AirTrain/E train takes under an hour. I learned the little things as I went: it's the second to last E exit on the way back, figuring out the best exit for me to street level at Lex Ave/53rd, (later on) getting from the 6 stop on Lex to the hotel (I mistakenly thought I was back at the E station), etc. All part of the fun. It's easy to go any direction on the subway.

There's plenty of cheap food and drink in the area: I had a super-juicy burger at Turtle Bay Tavern, good chicken at Fields Good Chicken, nice ciders at Niall's on 52nd, and goodies from Paris Baguette, Nuts Factory (my wife loved the Swedish gummies I brought home), and Buttercup Bake Shop.

I would have liked to visit Strangelove and Insomnia Cookies too, but I ran out of time as it was a very quick trip - 48 hours mostly for the parade Monday.

Lastly, Greenacre Park right behind the hotel is a gem!! (Sadly it was raining while I was there.)

Anyone have a recommendation for a voice teacher?

Hello all :) Does anyone have recs for a voice teacher that they’ve had a good experience with in Manhattan? Bonus points if they are well versed in “why” in addition to “what” to do, in contrast to a more vibes-based teaching approach. (Additional context if relevant: it’s been a few years so I’m effectively a casual beginner; I like musical theatre but open to other styles to develop better technique and be more well rounded).

Thanks everyone!

Interview new comers/tourists

Hey, I wanted to interview someone who is visiting New York that’s not from here or any tourists/new people who just moved here to ask them about the transit in New York. It should take only 10-15 minutes it’s a short interview and we can do it through zoom or I can send a survey link.

I've always been curious about the age statistics of moving to or leaving Manhattan

Since so many people move here for only a portion of their lives, I'd love to see some sort of graph that shows the ages people moved in and then left.

Maybe something presented in this format (this is not data about Manhattan, but you could imagine the blue being moves in, and reds being moves out)

22-year-old German chasing a childhood dream of living in NYC 🇩🇪🗽

Hey New Yorkers!

I'm Finn, 22, from a small town near Frankfurt, Germany. We sometimes call Frankfurt "Mainhattan" because of its skyline, so I guess I've already had a little practice with skyscrapers. Just on a much smaller scale. 😄

I've never been to the US, but I've always been fascinated by the people, their openness, the music, fashion, and culture. And New York has always been my dream.

There's something almost paradoxical about it. You're surrounded by so many people, yet nobody really cares what you're doing. Everyone is living their own life, following their own path. There's a certain kind of freedom in that which I've always found fascinating.

I'm not dreaming of some glamorous lifestyle. Just taking the subway to work, exploring the city afterward, meeting people, and experiencing everyday life would mean the world to me.

A little about me: I've completed a three-year vocational apprenticeship in metal fabrication, spent another year training as an industrial mechanic, and also worked in administration and logistics.

I'm hoping to spend 6–12 months legally living and working in or around NYC. I'm currently exploring J-1 Intern/Trainee programs for technical fields like manufacturing or quality control, as well as H-2B seasonal jobs.

So I figured I'd take a chance and ask the people who actually live here:

Does anyone know a company or business owner who might consider hosting an international technical trainee, or someone familiar with these visa programs?

I'm not looking for a handout. I'm willing to work hard and do everything the right way. Sometimes all it takes is one connection.

This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and now that I'm 22, I really want to give it a shot rather than spend the next few years wondering what could have been.

Thanks for reading, New York!

Finn 🇩🇪🇺🇸

How do you find the best clubs to join in NYC?

I’m trying to fill more of my week with recurring activities where I can meet people and build a bigger social circle.

I’m considering book clubs, cooking classes, creative classes, volunteering, or anything else that meets consistently. I’m less interested in one-off dinners or mixers because I would rather see the same people repeatedly and let connections develop naturally.

How do you find the genuinely good groups? Are there any specific clubs, websites, newsletters, Substacks, or Instagram accounts you recommend? Free or paid options are both welcome.
