Yeah, I've been yelled at for accidently bumping into someone while dancing and moving at a Flogging Molly show. It was towards the front of the stage too in a somewhat smaller venue. Nothing crazy, just having a good time moving and jumping around a bit. I mean, isn't that to be expected with Irish punk music? Then the guy this chick was with asked, "hey do you mind,? She's pregnant." My husband promptly responded, "well maybe right in front of the stage at a concert isn't the best place for her."

Yeah that was pretty weird. I go to shows like expecting to be jostled a bit. Most of the time the crowd is really awesome, maybe a bit roudy, but good vibes overall. I mean I'm not saying don't go pregnant, just maybe hang towards the back. Besides, how the hell could I know? Not like she was about it pop or anything. I mean I did go to a few concerts pregnant with my son, but we had seats. Definitely wouldn't be in the front row of a floor show.

My first ever concert was megadeth and slayer when I was 13. It had a seated balcony where I spent the first half of the concert until my dad convinced me to enter the crowd. I was so nervous until the music stopped between songs and a massive bearded dude spotted me and shouted “look guys there’s a kid in the pit” then everyone like softly pushed me around like they would everyone else and I was being picked up and everyone clearly found having a kid at such a concert hilarious and was trying to jokingly/carefully mosh with me.

The nicest concert goers I've ever met were at metal concerts. Legit good dudes mostly.

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 28d ago
It does seem like it. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the show Drumeo on YouTube, but it’s where they take drummers from different bands and play a song for them that they’ve never heard and then ask them to make up their own drum part for it. Dirk Verbeuren from Megadeth was on there a few years ago and came across as the most down to earth, decent guy. Awesome episode and I highly recommend.

It would be easy to look from the outside in and think that maybe metalheads were likely to be aggressive because of the music they listen to, but the truth is that in general, metal is less about being aggressive and more about releasing aggression.

This one time I was a few people back from the barricade at a Modest Mouse concert. It was the lull after the opener but before they came on, and this couple kinda squeezed their way up into the same area. Somebody must have bumped into her, because her guy was suddenly there with all that same attitude, "hey, careful! She's pregnant." To the crowd's credit, everyone immediately started ragging on them. It's like, guys, do you not realize what it's going to look like up here in maybe 10 minutes? After a minute or two of not being taken seriously by anyone they slunk back to somewhere more appropriate for people who want to watch a show without getting slammed into.

OMG!!! This happened at The Mummies show. These parents brought their young children and went all the way to the front of the venue. They formed a barrier between them and their children, and they were complaining about the mosh pit behind them. Then, they had the audacity to ask the lead singer to pose with them, which was not done. Who takes their 3/4-year-old and 5-year-old to a punk show at night just to stand right at the front and deal with a mosh pit behind them? Maybe find a babysitter? I didn't think that The Mummies sold out show would be a kid friendly event. Sure, they are dressed as mummies, but I thought that was terrible parenting.
Another time, some woman fainted right behind me. Her body hit the back of my legs. I was close to the front, and the woman in front of me already said to me that I cannot touch her or else she will push me. I looked at her and told her that I cannot control the crowd behind me. Then, she was mad when I asked her to get a security guard over to the railing. Her friend was the one who helped. Another woman was like you're going to let that woman and her boyfriend get all the way in the front. They have been pushing their way to the front all night. I stared right at her and said, "SHE FAINTED. HAVE SOME COMPASSION." She immediately STFU after that, and the woman and her boyfriend were taken out of the front so then she could get water and some air.

Me and my mate were enjoying views of Iguazu falls when someone asked us to leave because they want to take a picture and we already had plenty of time to do that (we were there for like 30 seconds). Like dude, we flew across half of the planet for this view, I'm not gonna take one picture and fuck off. Some people are completely losing the plot and ability to enjoy anything that's not on their screen.

Related: I was at a show- standing next to my wife- and the woman in front of me kept slowly backing up while she was dancing.
I don't think she was aware, but I finally stopped moving back to give her space and planted my feet on the ground.
She backed into me then turned around and accused me of being a perv for "grinding on [her]".
I yelled to her (above the music) "I haven't moved AT ALL in 10 min. YOU have. And this is my wife next to me. I wouldn't hit on or touch you even if I were single."
So she threw her beer on me and security dragged her out while she screamed about sexual assault.

u/showhorrorshow 28d ago
Had a young woman at a metal show do something very similar but without all the accusations and complaints. She just basically grinded on me for a while lol. I tried to get her attention because she never once acknowledged me so I wasnt sure if it was even intentional or what, the crowd was pretty tight, but she didnt respond or anything.

Oh man I was at a show once and a rather intoxicated woman with what I’m pretty sure were fake boobs kept having a boob pop out. She didn’t bother wearing a bra because who knows. Eventually her friend got sick of popping her titties back in her tank top. I am 40 and in my many years of going to very active punk, hardcore and ska shows I can say I’ve never lost a boob. But then again I don’t get sloppy drunk and keep my chesticles under control.

Omg. I was dancing to a DJ and a group of women came and stood RIGHT in front of me. Like, there was space for one person and 4 squeezed in. Fine, it’s annoying, but share the dance floor. But then they barely dance and mostly take selfies. For reference this is at the front and in Berlin where people do not have their phones out on the dance floor ever.
The one closest to me, when she did dance, did so by bending very far backwards and swinging her head. Essentially, leaning back into me and rubbing her hair all over my chest. I’m a woman and I don’t think she was hitting on me. I don’t think she was aware of my existence.
I tried holding my arm out to create a barrier between us, but that didn’t work. I tried gently redirecting her with my hand, that didn’t work. I should have just talked to her, but that’s not what I did. I was beyond irritated by this point.
What I did was let a few strands of that long annoying hair wrap themselves around my finger, and then yanked down.
She looked around SUPER confused, STILL didn’t clock my existence, but mercifully they left the dance floor soon after.

I’ve had a buddy who is, in his own words, “a big ass black dude”. He was like 7 foot and built like a fucking freight train. He’d grab a seat in front of people, turn back to them, and say “prepare for blackout” before sitting down.
Cracked me up every time because you’d just see them struggling to look around him. Usually it was a joke before he’d move out of the way (the could help it).
Point being, I’d have him block them for the rest of the show. Because fuck your video man. People want to enjoy the show.

I try to keep all my concerts to smaller club sized venues. Tends to be both cheaper and a lot more fun.
Luckily I like the kind of stuff that actually plays at those places too so it all works out.

Normally I agree. However I've had..allot of family and friends die over the past few years with massive life changes. I'm now glad I took those videos at the concerts. My loved ones were standing right next to me going crazy, happy as hell and in their glory as my ex wife use to say. I just went back and rewatched a video from Phil lesh and friends at the capital theater I took a few years back. No i agree, i think its good to record a bit for the ability to look back, but I do think most people record way too much that it gets in the way of them fully enjoying the concert. I think recording for a couple minutes and then phone away rest of time is ideal for me

"No photography", they put a sticker over your phone's lens/es and if you remove it or are caught filming, you're ejected.
I've been to a couple of "oldskool" raves in the last 18 months and had stickers put on my phone because the organisers didn't want it to ruin the immersion of it being a 90s throwback rave.

No it's media addiction, dopamine is just a neurotransmitter that is involved in the mechanisms that can create an addiction. Being at a show of his favorite band should give him enough "dopamine" to keep his attention. But his drug of choice is short form media content.

I went to a Toto concert over the summer because a family member invited me. It ended up being an awesome concert. But the lady and her husband in front of us kept live streaming the concert on Facebook in 2 minute intervals. The text on her phone was like 75 point font, I probably could have read it from the back of the arena. It was super annoying but at the same time really confusing

This also isn’t such a black and white/ right and wrong kind of thing.
You aren’t a dick for getting some pics or taking some videos of near things like pyro or near visuals or the chorus to your favorite song.
But you are a dick if you sit there and record the entire song or worse the entire concert. I just saw ice nine kills the other day and the dude in front of me legit recorded the entire show. While holding the phone about a foot over his head while already being near the front.
Then that’s the other thing it comes down to etiquette. If you record with your phone in your own sight line you aren’t blocking people’s views. But if you hold that shit above your head you are blocking people. And majority of the time it’s not even a good video. Sometimes I see folks actually getting a good shot. But most are drunk or in a bumpy crowd and can’t keep it steady.
14
u/mxjxs91 28d ago
If you record with your phone in your own sight line you aren’t blocking people’s views. But if you hold that shit above your head you are blocking people
This is my golden rule. While I don't take many videos and definitely don't record entire songs, if it requires me to hold my phone over my own head and block anyone's view, I won't take any videos. I'll take few quick pictures in that manner which takes all of 5 seconds, but that's about it.
I would just feel like such an asshole if I held my phone over my head and blocked anyone else's view. I don't get how SO many people don't care and do it for entire songs.
I also never upload any videos or pictures from concerts to social media, they are strictly for myself to look back at and enjoy.
4
u/Potential_Basis_662 28d ago
Yall are missing the point. Posts like this are about the larger fact that 98% of the audience is mindlessly standing there recording with their phones.

It is an unpopular opinion. In many venues the sound quality can actually be pretty mid (especially for huge artists, but I don't go to those concerts). I am there to see an artist that I like in the flesh, I want to see them feel their own music and flow with it. I want to see how they interact with us the public and what they tell us about themselves or the music. I want to see them. I'm very tall though, so people's phones don't bother me.

Why not just listen to the recording then... maybe I'm the minority but I rarely go to a show and say wow that sounded so much better! I go to a show to see the performance.

u/DelayedEcstasy 28d ago
But the sound is amazing when they replay it from their phone speakers!!!

I do this and go back a lot to enjoy my snippets, I’m not sharing all my shows publicly & it’s not to brag. I’m old I forget and love my videos. Also helps me remember when & where I attended that concert.
I know it’s annoying but really it’s for me.
Plus Usually I have crappy seats and the zoom helps me see better anyway.

People who make these "Why dont you guys put away your phones and live in the moment?" posts are the most performative "old man yells at cloud" MFers on the internet. And especially to pull out your phone to take a picture of people with their phones out to show how you're somehow better than them because you don't pull your phone out during a concert. Get a grip.

I saw a video of a bad car accident and saw at least 3 people holding their phones close to the incident with that same dopey posture/stare... Zero reaction to the actual event.
This Social Media obsession, and it's need for potential cessation through up-thumbs/upvotes/comments instead of living in the moment and helping a living being, is a legit sickness.

I go back and watch concerts I’ve recorded. I like to look back on them from time to time . I don’t record the entire show or every song, just short clips of the songs I like.
21
u/WildlingViking 28d ago
I do the same. I do a couple little short videos usually during the beginning few songs, maybe do a pan around the venue to get the feel for the place, and then put my phone away for the rest of the show. I like to be able to go back and see the atmosphere and the date of when we went.
5
u/16BitGenocide 28d ago
This is what I do as well, a few short clips of the intro to the best songs, and then it's just enjoying the show. Maybe a quick pan of the stadium/crowd/pit if there's an intermission or moments before the encore.

u/Lower-Trust1923 28d ago

I take very few photos. The ones that matter to me most are often from concerts. Which feels a bit weird to say but I guess it's because one photo has an entire weekend of backstory and then some attached to it.

I watched the couple clips I took from every single concert I've been to once in a while. Doing whole songs though is crazy

u/Dry-Childhood-3436 28d ago
I went to a show two nights ago and they asked for no phones. People brought them out for quick photos but also kept them low, it was such a more enjoyable experience. I wish more venues would ask and enforce the rule.

Industry studies on smartphone media consumption estimate that roughly 70% of all captured visual media (photos and videos) on mobile devices are never revisited or looked at again.

u/shlakevuk 28d ago
And when I look for live shows on YT, half of videos are their crappy visuals crappier audio. Mildly infuriating again.

u/sgb67 28d ago
If that bugs you, try to go to the movies these days. Especially if it's a movie where the main audience is beneath 30 years old.
Those mfs talk, scream, phone, film and whatnot.

The absolute worst I've ever seen are people who are recording THEMSELVES at the show. Not a quick selfie or anything. I've seen people taking long videos with the camera held up high and blocking views but facing them and not the band. Just recording themselves (and the random people next to them) singing and watching the show. Some of them even live stream it. I saw this one girl get mad because people were dancing "in her shot".
Absolute psychos.

My wife and I argue about this to the point. I don’t even go to concerts anymore for this reason and many others. When 80% of the people recording videos they’ll never watch again it’s just ridiculous.

The first gig after covid I was seating and watched the 2 people in front of me, who were at the gig together, record every single song. So they both had the entire show on their phones, to never watch ever again. Definitely worth the money that.
I also once saw someone record a video then play it back during the gig to try and hear it. Wtf?
Taking a quick pic or short video, fine. But to record almost everything you do, is just boring. Especially in portrait so 50% of the video is ground or sky.

Went to a concert of one of my favorite bands. One of their songs was my first dance song at my wedding. I recording them playing that song at the concert. Times I've watched that video back: zero.
Sometimes it's best just to experience the moment

Unless they’re granny spec with a tablet or flip, it’s not ruining your day unless you want it to.

I'm going to see Phoebe Bridgers next month who is instating "no-phones" for her entire tour. The photos from the concert so far are so surreal and beautiful. Everyone in the moment, no one recording or anything, some people holding up lighters.
Im so fucking excited

It might sound silly, but whenever I go out or do something fun I always make sure to take a selfie, even if it looks awful, or capture a quick video of myself there. Otherwise it doesn't really feel like a memory to me. Anyone can look up high-quality concert footage on YouTube what I actually want to preserve is the feeling and the proof that I was there.

u/SpecialistDuck3703 28d ago
- Watching the replay later is not gonna be nearly as entertaining.
- You can find the songs on the internet, ffs.
- You’re probably not even recording the moments with your friends, you’re just getting a new, uninteresting POV of the stage
- The pixels on your phone are not going to capture the whole visual experience with equal quality. The audio won’t be as good either
- You have a 4K experience right in front of you, and you’re choosing to stare at a lower-res screen.
- Lastly, if you’re doing this, you’re probably an NPC who didn’t put any thought into what you’re doing. You’re not actually saving a good memory unless you include yourself or your friends in the video and spend more time in the moment.

It used to bother me. With time, I learned to mind my own business.
What's mindly infuriating at concerts are the people standing next to you who sing every song out loud so that you can't actually hear the artist. I had this happen at Tenacious D, so annoying. Go to karaoke man.

I would wager that 95% of the time the videos being recorded at a concert are never watched again.

Ya it’s the stupid thing people do now days, nobody enjoys entertainment for themselves, it has to be shared for it to of happened.

people dont know how to enjoy the moment anymore. anywhere you go. people's first instinct is to just take a photo or video

They should all be made to sit/stand in the same section so each of their videos contains footage of how fucking stupid they all look.

This is like everything now,
Some people are so keen on the idea of sharing experiences that they can overlook them in doing so. Perhaps even failing to reflect how the experience felt because they were too busy filming and and feeling anticipation about what other people would feel and say about their recorded experience afterwards. Already looking to the future afterwards before the moment has even begun, there are so many systems in place that make being present almost impossible these days, this is just one of them.
Photos are great and having them to supplement memory is wonderful, I have just a couple short video clips of me and my best friend who died a few years ago and I sorely regret not taking more videos. Sweet and fun videos of times with friends and unique experiences are really powerful and valuable.
A lot of people just kind of miss the point (at least the point as I see it) and trade a fully stimulative and immersiveexperience, for a half-looking,half-feeling experience and a video.
video is great for later in life to look back at things but if you had to only half pay attention to the original experience in order to get that video, is it really worth it? We can’t take our video cloud Library with us when we die and we will not see a slideshow of that when our life flashes, we will see a slideshow of the things we really paid attention to with our own eyes and our own senses, the things we spent our time focusing on.

u/natetheskate100 28d ago
I dont understand paying high prices for tickets and then watching the whole thing through your phone. Just be there! Plus, you can get almost any concert in HD on YouTube.

u/MissUnRuly 28d ago
I have several videos of Beyoncé from floor seats and don’t think I’ve ever looked at them. I dont bother anymore bc why do we do that? Most are gonna be trash quality any damn way
