Why do people put /s at the end of their comments sometimes?

u/Jinxthegenderfluid 29d ago

/s means sarcasm, it’s a tone indicator. there’s multiple different tone indicators, but i’d say /s is the most used as sarcasm is probably the hardest emotion to distinguish from text

tHe BeSt WaY tO dIcTaTe SaRcAsM cOmEs FrOm SpOnGeBoB, lIkE tHiS ImO. though it is annoying to type and extremely obvious which a lot of sarcasm relies on not being

I dont read that as sarcasm though, I read that as a "derpy" comment, more in line with mocking, or insulting someone's intelligence than sarcasm

Reddit used to have an option to convert your text to that style

54

u/Competitive-Cloud993 29d ago

Ahh okay, got cha. I haven’t seen this before until recently. Good to know

Alright, fun’s over. Now back to arguing and throwing out slurs.

28

u/radclive 28d ago

You dont tell me what to do, you (insert slur for your race here)!

1

u/Lanky_Plane_8739 28d ago

Slur would be *humanoid* as I’m a human on Reddit feel free to roast. XD

1

u/DankStew 28d ago

He said slur for their race so you have to call them something like a 5k, the Indy 500 or 100 meter hurdles.

2

u/Lanky_Plane_8739 28d ago

Can call me the lanky_plane as I am half white and skinny 🤷‍♂️

2

u/DankStew 28d ago

Well call me DankStew because what the fuck is in this shit?!

0

Alright, fun’s over. Now back to arguing and throwing out slurs

3

u/blckout_junkie 28d ago

You forgot to tell them they need to leave/divorce their partner.

2

u/blckout_junkie 28d ago

It's the Reddit way. Tm

u/Stock-Mission-7561 28d ago

The only other tone indicator I've seen is /uj and /j in the circlejerk subs haha

1

u/Rambler1223 28d ago

I see you know how to circlejerk pretty good. I also know a thing or two about the old circlejerk

2

u/thetoerubber 28d ago

what are the other ones? I only knew about /s 🤯

2

u/Dontbeajerkdude 28d ago

I honestly don't think I've ever not understood sarcasm in text.

4

u/Jinxthegenderfluid 28d ago

some people are better than others! (iirc) tone indicators were originally used/made for autistic people who often have more difficulty understanding tone, however they can definitely be helpful for non-autistic people as well! me personally there have definitely been times where i’ve misunderstood someone’s sarcasm and took it to be genuine, and i’m not autistic

1

u/Tricky-Alps2810 28d ago

Half the joke of sarcasm is someone taking you literally. So I prefer not to /s...

But Reddit is full of autistic people who are extremely literal and find it r/mildlyinfuriating when us funny people do that

2

u/Dontbeajerkdude 28d ago

I often overuse 'lol' on here because otherwise people legitimately think you're angry. But I never bother with /s. Funny thing is, I'm probably somewhat autistic myself.

1

u/Tricky-Alps2810 28d ago

I am probably, too. And quite often people just don't get my meaning (because I'm immediately off on a tangent, or have jumped about 4 levels of context).

2

u/JustRice015 28d ago

Nah uh, /s means serious, so other people will know how serious my resonse is /s

1

u/dachshvnd 28d ago

What are the other indicators

6

u/Jinxthegenderfluid 28d ago

/j = joking
/hj = half joking
/srs = serious
/gen = genuine
/lh = lighthearted
/nm = not mad

those are the ones that I’ve personally encountered and know the meanings of

4

u/dachshvnd 28d ago

Nice. Learned something new today. Thank you

2

u/Scottstots-88 28d ago

I think “hj” stands for something else.. At least it did on the menus in Thailand.

1

u/SignificantDark4749 28d ago

I’ve been on Reddit for years and only know of the sarcasm one? What are some others?

1

u/BwnnyRxbbit 28d ago

I thought it was serious, am I wrong?

1

u/Jinxthegenderfluid 28d ago

/srs is serious. that one used to trip me up too lol

1

u/Cautious-Start-1043 28d ago

Sarcasm isn’t an emotion.

1

u/Jinxthegenderfluid 28d ago

oh yeah, ty lol. didn’t notice i said that

1

u/pracsitidder 28d ago

That's quite sad. I would never tell people I am being sarcastic.

2

u/Jinxthegenderfluid 28d ago

i find it amusing that you consider that sad. tone indicators started/were popularized as an accommodation for autistic people who don’t read tone well, but even besides that it’s not like everyone understands tone through text 100% of the time. it doesn’t hurt anyone to use them 🤷

0

u/pracsitidder 28d ago

Maybe I just prefer the idea of sarcasm that leaves you in doubt

12

u/PM_ME_UR_REPTILES1 29d ago

It means theyre being Sarcastic. Been seeing used lately for things that arent sarcastic though and just scared they'll be downvoted lol. Not that the comment you replied to is doing that, they used it correctly.

11

u/Competitive-Cloud993 29d ago

Fascinating. I had no idea lol thank you

3

u/tnova2323 28d ago

They are ready to listen to Sandstorm now.

4

u/noshirtsarah 28d ago

Reddit is filled with people having trouble grasping sarcasm. Anywhere else it’s not that much of a problem.

2

u/Sweet_Sleep_9616 28d ago

I have been saying since the 90’s that we need a sarcasm font!

1

u/AmbitiousSwimming976 28d ago

I’ve been wanting to ask this for years.

1

u/BuddhaLennon BROWN 28d ago

Adding to the sarcasm explanation: the slash / is an allusion to html coding where one would mark up text to be, for example, bolded with <b> The text I want to appear in bold </b>

You always have to remember the / to turn off that formatting command.

1

u/BillydelaMontana 28d ago

Redditors do not understand sarcasm unless you put /s…/s

0

u/JuanFoYoMamma 28d ago

Oh, the /s is short for sexytime /s

-2

u/the_exile83 28d ago

Americans don't get sarcasm so it has to be spelled out for them.
