I’m a 90’s teen. A lot of times I wish I could go back to those times man. Going to concerts back then was better. Not a single phone in sight! Just good times! Just good times and memories. You go to concerts now, all you see is the lights from all the goddamn phone screens from all the asswipes recording shit! Just to upload to their so called, “channels” to try and get as many likes as possible from people they’ll never see. It’s really fucking stupid what we’ve turned into 🙄

Oh see, I was going to chime in with, “yeah, I wish I could have recorded some clips of the amazing shows I saw back then, too!”

But that isn’t what you meant.

I'm an early 00s teen. Same.

Now there's phone light everywhere. This happens at movies to, only they aren't usually recording the film. They're scrolling facebook and instagram. Why did they pay for a movie ticket then?

I'm an 80's teen. Got to experience shows with and without the huge stage screens and theatrics. Just raw energy and stage show. Best shows were large stadium or outdoor shows where the whole arena was bouncing to the same rhythm. And of course - no phones! Unfortunately we can't go back.

I was a teen in the 2010s.

I wish I could experience your perspective

This isnt a young generation thing only anymore unfortunately. I went to see Eric Clapton in Milwaukee recently. (Im in my 30s, but used to steal my parents Unplugged CD of his).
I was appalled at the behavior of the 55+ crowd. Obnoxiously loud and drunk before the opener was done. Recording constantly, the entire time, or just talking through songs.

The cherry on top is when he played Tears in Heaven, people were whooping and wooooo-ing loudly through it. Like……. Did we forget the context of this slow sad song?!!

I mean I take a few quick photos and maybe a couple short vids as a memory. But I try to make sure I have my phone at eye level so I know I’m not blocking anyone’s view 🤷🏼‍♂️

If someone had a phone, you COULD go back tho. Catch 22.

No you couldn't. It is impossible to time travel backwards.

Some people just wanna be negative lol🤷🏻

I remeber being at events and youd seek out the clubs photographer to snap a photo of you and your friends.

Because we never took out our phones

You'd then wait a week to scroll through all the photographers photos to see if you made the cut

It's got to be horrible for the performer too, looking out, trying to connect, and seeing only the backs of phones. Concerts used to be an exchange of energy between audience and act, now it just a zoo exhibit.

I'm a 2000s teen and I think the biggest loss for me is the community aspect

It's just never been the same, even at punk shows where people typically don't have phones out. The social media vibe is still stale on the brain. The social aspect of a concert is still there but it's only out of old habit.

A major reason I don’t go to concerts anymore 😞
Phones suck the joy out of most things.

u/scattered_brains 28d ago

what an absolutely stupid reason to not enjoy live music

Rude people always ruin things for others.

I'm 33 and in modern times (post '04 or so) Tool, Aesop Rock, and Dave Matthews are the best shows I've been to in that regard. Either barred from recording or too into the show to record the whole time. It was fantastic and I'd fuck with anyone who yelled at me for getting in the way of recording

I'll take a picture or two throughout the show, but otherwise my phone is in my pocket where it fucking belongs

You were going to shows when you were 11?

1

u/amrfallen 28d ago

I went to a couple, yeah.

There's still no cell phones out in a circle pit. Just sayin.

As a 60's teen, war.

War.

Same. Going to a concert felt like meeting up with 10,000 friends you've yet to meet! Easy conversations with strangers bc there was always ONE topic you KNEW everyone agreed on. Now every concert is the same bunch of people more interested with ppl who aren't even there, and you're just in their way.

I will say that I also lost thousand's being sure to buy a shirt at EVERY concert I went to. Don't have a SINGLE ONE! LOL Oh well they exist on some 35mm pics in a box around here somewhere! :P

The has old man get off my lawn energy lol.

None of that stops you from enjoying the music, or the performer on stage.

And ironically, if it's a popular artist, you can barely see them anyways without front row seats. So the only way to see them, is through the big screen monitors lol.

I take LSD and dace like a weirdo at concerts. I also have a job and kids. I absolutely do not want to be filmed doing this. This was no problem until around 2010, when someone showed me a youtube video of myself dancing at a festival with a commentor mocking me. I no longer dance in public.

u/Witty_Lead5036 28d ago

That is sad that happened to you. But there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public place. Same thing would be argued if the band itself was recording for promotional reasons, and recorded you there.

2

u/Lucid-Crow 28d ago edited 28d ago

Yeah, but even if the band recorded there was no way to distribute that before. No youtube or social media. There was no risk of that video getting to your employer. At worst you end up in some DVD release that barely sells.

Also, a concert on private property is not a public space. The venue could easily establish rules maintaining people's privacy. They don't because the culture expects the ability to record.

90s was peak civilisation

Everyone on here is a 90s teen.

I don't get why people are like "as a millennial..." as if they're some rare breed who doesn't get a platform often enough to share their opinions

as a 2010s teen, i wish less people recorded as much of the show as they do. but i also do record about 2 full songs and maybe a few clips of songs i like otherwise. it’s very nice to me to go back and watch the videos i took. it’s not the same seeing the concert footage, i like seeing my own videos.

do you not wish you could go back to those times and see it exactly as it was in your eyes? having something more to look back on than some fading memories?

u/RustyTrombone3 28d ago

It’s not that deep. How about you worry about yourself instead of what someone else is doing?

95% of people recording aren’t doing it for channels. They’re doing it so they can re-live it on some random Sunday night from their bed.
