Build Upgrade Is there such a big difference between 1080p and 1440p that justifies the more expensive monitor and the sacrifice in performance?

Everyone says my video card can handle 1440p, but I never understood if there's really that much need to buy a more expensive monitor and sacrifice performance. Going from 1080p to 1440p doesn't seem like such a big difference, does it?

Build Upgrade Dell vendor locks AM5 9950X3d CPU to Alienware Area 51 gaming desktop prebuilt - CPU is E-Waste outside of dell motherboard

• Upvotes

I recently purchased a dell prebuilt in order to swap components onto my own PC
as the title says, after days of swapping components and making sure every single component is functional ive come to the conclusion that the 9950X3D is vendor locked to the alien-ware area 51 desktop, all motherboards used work all swapped CPUS tested worked, the 9950x3d simply does not work in any mobo besides the alienware prebuilt one, in the end I took it to a repair shop who also works with old dell prebuilts and told me it was vendor locked which ive never heard of before

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/desktop-computers/spd/alienwarearea51aat2265

does anyone have insight on what can be done, is this reversible? i genuinley cannot find anything else online stating dell vendor locks consumer CPUS or what to do

Discussion Does AMD or nvidia GPU actually matter that much?

I wanna build a pc, and I was thinking of going for the radeon 5700xt, but it doesn’t support rat tracing, but does that even really matter? Are there games that only run on nvidea GPU’s?

Build Upgrade Upgrade am4 or build new am5 ?

Hi,

I'm about to buy a new AM5 build. I got a pretty good deal on the CPU, motherboard and RAM, but now I'm wondering if I should return them and just upgrade my AM4 build instead.

New AM5 build:
-9850X3D
-ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming WiFi
-2x32GB DDR5 G.Skill CL30 6000
-9070 XT Nitro+ (or similar)
-2TB SN850X NVMe

The new build would cost me around $3,700 USD. (total with case + ventirad & other things)

My current AM4 build:
-Ryzen 3600X
-5700 XT
-32GB DDR4 (don't remember the speed)
-B450 Tomahawk Max

The other option would be to upgrade my AM4 build with a new CPU and GPU, maybe the motherboard too. For example:
-Ryzen 5700X + ASRock Challenger RX 9060 XT 16GB

Total upgrade cost: $820 USD.

What would you do in my situation? Is it worth spending that much on a new build, or should I just upgrade my current one?

I play at 1440p.

Thanks!

Discussion SSD and Power Supply

Which Power Supply and SSD should I buy for my PC?

PowerColor Red Devil 9070XT
Ryzen 7 9800X3D
16x2(32GB)Ram

I searched and it says better to go with 1000W for full utilization for Red Devil 9070xt whereas 850W is base.

Build Upgrade Similar to everyone else, stuck on choosing a GPU right now

I currently have a 3070ti I'd be giving to my wife and I'm now torn on the upgrade

Current build:

Ryzen 9 7900X 4.7GHz 12 core / Asus ROG STRIX X670E-F GAMING WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard / Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-5600 CL36 Memory / Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX

Choices:

9070XT XFX Mercury OC for £800 (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/tCdMnQ/xfx-mercury-oc-rgb-radeon-rx-9070-xt-16-gb-video-card-rx-97trgbbb9)

Asus TUF Gaming OC 9070XT for £945 (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/6QPv6h/asus-tuf-gaming-oc-radeon-rx-9070-xt-16-gb-video-card-tuf-rx9070xt-o16g-gaming)

PNY VCG508016TFXPB1 5080 for £1399 (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/93ZWGX/pny-vcg508016tfxpb1-geforce-rtx-5080-16-gb-video-card-vcg508016tfxpb1)

Asus TUF GAMING OC 5070ti for £1330 (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/ybjv6h/asus-tuf-gaming-oc-geforce-rtx-5070-ti-16-gb-video-card-tuf-rtx5070ti-o16g-gaming)

Mainly play things like Cyberpunk / BF6 / MW4 / Forza Horizon 6 / Helldivers 2 and then a bunch of smaller indie games, I currently have a 144hz 1440p main screen and two 1080p side screens, however, they will all be upgraded to newer 1440p's within the next 6-12 months and I will be getting GTA6 for PC whenever it's released, plus a few other newer AAA's whenever I get the new GPU

I don't care much for ray tracing as I've never used it, but if it works well and is automatically set then great

Thank you and sorry for the same question 50 times a day right now

Troubleshooting PC shows zero signs of life after electrical circuit went haywire

Hey all!

I will try to keep it short. (NARRATOR: He certainly tried his best.)

Two nights ago g/f and I were on our respective PCs, and we had what I suspect is a short in our electrical circuit due to an appliance. The power on that circuit was rapidly going in and out once it started, and didn't stop until I unplugged what I believe to be the problematic appliance.

Sadly I did not have the presence of mind to explain to my gf to shut her PSU off as I had done to my PC, and now the PC shows no signs of life whatsoever. We replaced the PSU (I am not comfortable with performing the paperclip test, so I'm unsure if the original is toast or not), but still zero signs of life. No lights on the mobo, no beeps.

As soon as power was stabilized and we realized her PC wouldn't turn on, I got down and smelled for the blue smoke of death/ozone but got no such smell.

I tried removing the RAM and nothing.

I don't know if removing the GPU could have any effect, so I haven't attempted removing that.

At this point I suspect a dead mobo, but can't find any visible scorch marks or anything, though Im not sure that those need to be present to indicate damage.

Any advice on what I could try or look for?

Thanks in advance.

Build Help 7800X3D vs 9800X3D and RX 9060 XT vs 9070 XT for competitive gaming?

I'm building a PC with a budget of around 9000PLN (~€2000) and can't decide what to get.

I mostly play Valorant, CS2 and Fortnite at 1080p low settings. I have a 240Hz monitor but might upgrade to 400Hz.

I'm deciding between the 7800X3D and 9800X3D, and the RX 9060 XT 16GB and RX 9070 XT. I also play some AAA games occasionally but don't really care about ultra settings.

Is the 9800X3D worth the extra money? And would the 9070 XT be overkill for my use?

I want something that'll last me a good 4-5 years without overspending. Also, is the ASRock 9060 XT Challenger any good?

What would you guys go with? If you have any other compeletly other build ideas let me know.

Thanks

Build Help Worth upgrading to newer card with less VRAM?

Hey all. My current GPU is the 7600XT 16GB. As with everyone right now I'm getting insane "FOMO" so to speak over rising prices. So, as the title says, I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to a newer GPU with less VRAM as my current budget is, at most, 500€, ideally 450 and below. Use is for 1080p gaming, minimum 60fps with mayyyyybe some wiggle room for 144hz. Rest of specs are as follows;

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X
  • MoBo: Asus A320M-K
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4 (insane lucky find of off FB Marketplace for about 60€)

Build Upgrade Please help - RX 9070, 9070 XT, or RTX 5070?

Hey everyone, I REALLY need help on choosing what GPU to upgrade to! :)

My current specs: 5700x3d, 32gb ram, RX 9060 XT 16GB. I also have a 200hz monitor at 1440p resolution. My PSU is a corsair rm750e 750w (2025) I feel like my 9060 XT is slightly under what I would like FPS wise, especially for FFXIV with reshade.

I don't play AAA games, I play a limited selection of games lots of which I can't find benchmarks for since they are obscure and less popular and not mainstream. My main games are WoW retail (and Forever), and FFXIV.

Then I'll occasionally play Overwatch, OSRS (runelite), Warframe, Stardew Valley, and maybe some modded Minecraft with shaders (aka running around for 20 minutes then logging off xD).

My options in Australian Dollars (AUD, brand new all from Amazon):

  • RX 9070 XT - $1250
  • RX 9070 - $1079
  • RTX 5070 - $1249 (cheapest model)

I am deciding on whether its worth it to pay the extra for Nvidia just because I know FFXIV runs much better on Nvidia cards and Blizzard seems to favor Nvidia in terms of bug fixes... I know the 9070 XT is MUCH faster than the 5070, but would that matter for the games I play? Do I even need the XT or would the 9070 be better value?

Thank you!

Build Upgrade Rtx 3060 ti upgrade debate

Hi there!

I'm not sure how to start this but I've been looking into upgrading my pc lately, I have an i5-12600kf, rtx 3060 ti build I did a few years ago. It's a wonderful machine and does most of what I need it too, but lately with getting heavy into vr and with that getting more into blender and substance painter especially I'm finding it struggling hard.

I'm pretty sure the main thing I need is a gpu upgrade, but what gpu is the problem for me. I've almost fully ruled out Nvidia cards because AMD seems to have a much better price to performance right now, with the rx 9000 series looking nice but I also have seen some good deals on the rx 6750 xt on ebay.

I'm looking to spend maybe 600$ max but I know with how prices are right now that might be hard, if you have any recommendations I'd be happy to hear!

I also am fortunate to live close to a microcenter with a decent few gpus at okay prices so if that helps at all with my situation

Build Upgrade Upgrading a 5yo PC piecemeal: RX 9070 XT, 850W PSU & Case onto an i7-10700K base?

Hey guys,

Haven't paid much attention to PC hardware for the last few years, so I've been running my ideas through AI to catch up on what's current. Dropping my setup here to see what you all think and get some sanity checks before buying anything.

My rig is around 5 years old now. I used to build fresh every couple of years, but prices are pretty steep these days and not having any huge issue with the current rig, so I'd rather upgrade piece-by-piece. I'm not in a massive hurry, but my 2070 Super is starting to struggle on newer games (like Aion and other recent Steam titles) across my dual ultrawide setup.

The idea is to buy parts now that give me a immediate bump today, but will carry directly into a full CPU/motherboard/RAM platform upgrade later on down the track without going to waste.

Current Specs:

  • CPU: Intel i7-10700K
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z490 AORUS ELITE AC
  • RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200 CL16
  • GPU: Gigabyte RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB
  • Cooler: Corsair H115i RGB Platinum (280mm AIO)
  • Drives: 1TB NVMe + 2TB HDD
  • PSU: Corsair RM750 (2019) 750W 80+ Gold
  • Case: Cooler Master MasterBox MB520
  • Monitors: MSI 34" 3440x1440p (180Hz) + Acer 34" 3440x1440p (120Hz)

Parts I'm looking at buying now:

  1. GPU: RX 9070 XT (16GB)
  2. PSU: 850W ATX 3.0 Gold Power Supply
  3. Case: Corsair Frame 4000D RS

A few questions:

  1. 10700K Bottleneck: How much is my 10700K on PCIe 3.0 going to hold back a 9070 XT at 3440x1440p? Will I still get a substantial boost right now, or is it a waste until I swap the CPU/board?
  2. PSU & Case Longevity: Is an 850W ATX 3.0 PSU and the 4000D RS enough breathing room for whatever next-gen platform I upgrade to later, or should I just step up to 1000W?
  3. Dual Ultrawide: Any weird driver quirks or high idle power draw issues with current AMD GPUs driving two 3440x1440 monitors at 180Hz / 120Hz?

Open to any thoughts on this setup or alternative routes I should consider instead. Cheers!

Build Upgrade Mixing RAM sticks will it work?

RAM prices are going up all over the world and there aren’t many sticks available in shops where I live, so when I saw a decent deal on a 16GB stick I ordered it.

Current: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3600 CL18

New: 1x16GB Puskill DDR4 3200 CL16 1.35V (16-18-18-42)

Board/CPU: ASUS PRIME B660M-A WIFI D4, i3-12100

Haven’t unboxed it yet, I was thinking to just put it in B1 slot and let XMP do the work.

Will this work fine, or should I set anything manually in the BIOS? I’m fine with the Corsair dropping to 3200 and everything running at CL18.

3600 sticks aren’t available here at all, and even 3200 CL16/CL18 sticks are rare, most of what’s in stock is CL22.

Troubleshooting HELP pc not recognizing two different gpus

bought an used rx 6800 xt. didn’t get any output, but fans and rgb turned on, mobo lights stop at gpu and don’t reach boot.
i still have time to return it so its fine.

my friend borrowed me a rx 580 because i do not have integrated graphics. it doesn’t work either (he didn’t test it before giving it to me, so it could also not be working)

what could i be doing wrong, as there is a chance none of the gpus are broken?

for context, i got video from the rx 6800 the first time i booted the pc. messed around on the bios for a bit, and i was getting some screen tears (could have been probably drivers, the gpu being broken, or just mobo bios being lazy). after that time i never got it to run again.
psu is probably not a problem, as it recognizes everything else, and i even tried switching the gpu cable for another one that came in the box.

Build Help Budget motherboard + i5 14600k

• Upvotes

Will the MSI PRO B760M-P DDR4 (it has no vrm heatsinks) work fine with an i5-14600KF? I'm limiting it to 125W anyway, trying to maximize the use of this motherboard cause I plan to upgrade it in a couple of months alongside the GPU.

Build Upgrade Replacing CPU fan?

Hi.

Last year I asked a coworker to help me build a PC and it worked great so far. Sadly, now I'm getting weird noises from the PC and from what I read on some articles and videos, it could be from my CPU fan. Can you recommend me what to buy to replace it, so it will fit into my configuration.

If you think there could be another problem please tell me your opinions.

Thank you.

PC config:

Intel Core i5-10400, ASrock B460M-HDV, 16gb RAM, AMD Radeon RX Vega (8 GB)

Discussion RTX 3090 (Used) vs RTX 4070 Super for 4K. Is 24GB of VRAM worth buying a 350W space heater in 2026?

Can get a clean used RTX 3090 for roughly the exact same price as a brand new RTX 4070 Super right now.

The dilemma is obvious:
3090 gives 24GB VRAM and a massive 384-bit bus, but it's an Ampere space heater pulling 350W+ without native Frame Gen.

4070 Super pulls nearly half the power, runs much cooler, has full DLSS 3 / Frame Gen, but only carries 12GB of VRAM on a narrow bus.

For driving a 4K display, is 12GB on the 4070 Super already choking on unoptimized ports, or is buying a 6-year-old top-tier flagship just pure cope? Which one makes more sense today? (Simple competitive gaming, and casual story gaming.)

Discussion Is it worth waiting until Black Friday?

I want to upgrade my 4060 to a 5070. Black Friday is in about a month, but I've seen a lot of posts saying that the sales aren't real as retailers slowly increase the price of things, just to drop it back down to their original price to pretend it's on sale.

Is it worth waiting until Black Friday or should I just buy one now?

Build Upgrade Intel Arc B580 Titan OC (£350) vs RX 9060 XT 16GB (£450+) help me spend my money

I built this PC last May for around £550, and yes, I know the build is a bit all over the place I borrowed a mate’s spare GTX 1650 4GB to get it running, but honestly, I mainly played Valorant and Minecraft, so I never really needed anything more powerful.

Now I fancy getting into some more demanding single-player games, and I’d love to use better Minecraft shaders without my PC fighting for its life

My specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5 7600X
Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
Motherboard: ASRock B650M Pro RS
RAM: 16GB DDR5-5600
GPU: GTX 1650 4GB
PSU: Gigabyte 650W
Case: CiT Flash MicroATX

I’m stuck between the Intel Arc B580 Titan OC for £350 and the RX 9060 XT 16GB for £450+.
I’ll mainly be gaming at 1080p for the foreseeable future. Is the 9060 XT worth spending an extra £100+ on, or would the B580 be more than enough for what I want?

Also, do you reckon either card will run GTA 6 well when it eventually comes to PC?

Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from anyone who owns either card. Which would you go for?

Build Ready? First pc build ever beginner help

Pcpartpicker link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wm7mNp

Is this a good build, I've been researching as I went trying to decide what to buy.

I want a build to last me as long as possible without issues, I wanna game at 1440p or 4k if I can, max graphics and I'm gonna use mods a lot.

I don't care that much about fps. Never gamed at more than 60 fps, but of course more would be better.

Monitor that I already own: Dell Alienware AW3225QF 32" QD-OLED UltraHD 4K 240Hz. love it

My budget is around 4000€

The only components I'm not sure about are the motherboard (I've read some models can fry you CPU and vrms are really important) Also wich bios is better?

Power supply: I've read seasonic and Corsair are good but can't decide which.

CPU cooler: would a aio be better then fan?

Also need help if I should buy extra cables or accessories that I'm going to need

In the website there are no compatibility issues but I wanna make sure everything can fit and work together without issues.

Discussion $1,200 Alienware QD-OLED powered by an RTX 2060. Rate my financial priorities.

Needed the OLED strictly as a "mandatory business expense" for audio work and screen real estate. The PC itself is a rolling landfill project.
The GPU journey to power this flagship panel:
GTX 1050 Ti ➔ GTX 1070 ➔ RTX 2060.
My monitor stand is worth more than the silicon rendering the pixels. What's next, a 2070 Super next year?
