**I'm a 29 year old trans woman, my boyfriend is a 31 year old cis man**
I've been in Virginia for about half a week now with my boyfriend and I have some thoughts...
I moved here from Texas by car and it was a VERY long trip (over 17 hours) and I don't think either of us were prepared to be in a vehicle for that much time. My bf did a great job driving for the most part, but there were a couple instances where I felt like he was going way too fast and following cars way too closely that I got legitimately scared multiple times throughout our trip.
I packed virtually everything I possibly could into my car (with his help I should add) and was pretty impressed that I fit so much in there. We spent our first day in the "apartment" sorting my movies and games and I went through and made the place actually look presentable. It was very clear to me, and I expected this going into it, that my bf is essentially still a child in many ways and it has only gotten worse, not better, since I moved in with him.
For starters before I moved in he did not recycle. I was shocked when he told me they do not have dedicated carts for recycling here in Virgina and he has been tossing all his cardboard in plastics in the trash... so one of the first things I immediately had us buy was a can specifically for recyclables. We had some frozen pizzas for dinner the first night and, by his own admission, he did not know how to use the oven..
I was baffled for the most part; he said that his mother always handled the cooking and this also applied to our pictured dinner from last night, the man had never even made his own hot dogs before- On our trip to the grocery store when we were going down the aisles when I would pick something up more often than not he would ask me if it was meant to be microwaved or put in the oven. This made me doubt that he'd even been grocery shopping before and on top of this when I asked him to pick out foods to have for lunch or breakfast he grabbed a box of cereal and that was it. I said that he had to eat more than just that but no, apparently most days he only has an extremely small breakfast at work (some granola bars and an apple) and dinner.
All of this is to say I'm worried that I'm going to end up mothering my boyfriend instead of being his girlfriend. Neither of us have ever lived on our own before but I've craved independence basically my entire life and because of the way my mother treated me and the fact we lived in poverty, I've been well equipped to be able to take care of myself on my own; the same cannot be said for my boyfriend who told me point blank he had been struggling here on his own until I moved in.
What makes it worse is in a lot of ways he is also emotionally treating me like his mother. Relying on me HEAVILY on the emotional side of things. Ever since we got back he has spent every night crying, forcing me to pretty much hold him like a child and comfort him until he eventually stops and what he is crying for is always the same exact "worries" and it's driving me insane-
He's worried that he's not doing enough for me, I told him I've never said that once which he admits is true yet he still says it all the time. That doesn't mean that internally I'm not actually satisfied, he is NOT a romantic and that is something I've craved out of a relationship for a very long time. When he came down to Texas to get me I asked if he could buy me a nice dress to wear out for our date after I worked my last shift and initially he offered to give me one of his old BAND SHIRTS of a band I don't even fucking know to wear instead. I was so, so hurt that I told him forget about the dress and I'd just keep my work clothes on which made him double back and ask for my size because he wanted to "get me a dress", yeah right.
Our "apartment" which is really just a duplex, is quite small and lacking in a lot of furniture. A majority of my clothes are still in my car because I have nowhere to store them. I said we would have to buy me a dresser but he refuses to buy furniture for... reasons? So alternatively I said we can share the space in his dresser and his response? I can have a single drawer. His dresser has seven.
He said he's worried about the finances despite telling me he had it added up where we would have $1500 saved after all the bills even WITHOUT me working a job yet all the way through December. But he makes it sound like I'm draining him financially despite contributing equally, if not more, for everything so far.
I paid for gas for the entire trip, every single fill up which was at least $200. He paid for our few food/restaurant stops by comparison which I have to imagine were a fair bit less overall. We both paid for one night at a hotel which roughly cost the same. I paid for the first day of shopping for home goods ($200 again) he paid for yesterday's groceries ($155). I paid to restart my own car insurance on a separate plan, ($165) hell I even bought us tickets to see Godzilla in IMAX (which were not cheap) at a theater that's over an hour away because we live in the middle of fucking nowhere.
By comparison where I lived in Texas, DFW, my favorite theater was a half hour drive and it was also at a mall that had plenty of things to do that I loved. EVERYTHING that I loved was in Texas, it was my home for almost three decades and leaving it was the most painful thing I've ever done. He hasn't shown me enough love and appreciation for how hard and taxing that decision has been on me. He kept his life, something I've told him time and time again but he just doesn't fucking get it. His family house, with all of his belongings he got to keep, is about a 10 minute drive from here and they all still live there. He still has his friends, his coworkers, his job, all his favorite places and what do I have? Nothing. Nothing but him and the few important momentos that I was able to bring with me.
But I haven't been able to tell him how much I miss home already, how I hate that I couldn't give my mother at least one more week of rent so she wouldn't have the power shut off. How it hurt to have to hug her and tell her goodbye only for her to call me not even an hour later threatening to kill herself and our pets, causing me to call the police for a wellness check. I left the job that I loved with coworkers that were supportive of my transition and saw me for who I was. My best friends I've known since elementary school that I was only starting to be myself around, my best friend that called me his sister.
It all hurts so so much, I wanted time to mourn the life I had to sacrifice if I wanted to get away from my abuser and live as a woman. But what is my boyfriend doing? Complaining to me that he didn't sleep well because he was a little on the edge of the bed last night so he's going to need to take a nap when he gets off work.
I haven't even mentioned the fact that he has potentially given me an STD. Something the clinician belived to be impetigo that I got shortly after I met him in person for the first time back in August. I attributed it to one of our dogs that had a fungal/bacterial infection that my mother did nothing about, however despite the rashes clearing up after my initial round of medication, it has slowly started coming back; even after moving out of my house. So I'm terrified I've contracted something from my boyfriend even though he swears up and down he's never had sex before. The impetigo, or whatever the hell it is, makes me feel horrible about myself and if I got it from him and this is something I'll have to live the rest of my life with...
It's just... this is not what I wanted out of our relationship. I don't want to teach my boyfriend basic essentials about living that he should have known for decades now (he's 31) just because his real mother babied him too much (he had been going down there for dinner every night up until now), I don't want to nurse my boyfriend every night and tell him mommy is here. I want a MAN who will take care of me and let ME be the vulnerable one, I shouldn't be the rock when I'm crumbling into pieces.
