DISCUSSION Reflecting on the trilogy that made up my childhood and adult life

Post image

The news broke my heart. Mass Effect Trilogy happens to be the best games I grew up with.

It's been a damn good ride, though. I replayed the trilogy a few weeks ago. I think it's time to give it another run. Obituary run, if you like.

There are things I learned from the game that I use in my life. Here are a few:

  • Shepard's I won't ask my team to do anything that I wouldn't attitude
  • Asking the right questions saying the right things when someone comes to you for counsel
  • Mordin's playful attitude despite being so deep into a traumatizing career
  • Knowing when to let the other guy win
  • Friends like Garrus Vakarian exist. And I'm privileged to say I have a mate who's a Garrus in my life.
  • Fighting despite overwhelming odds comes down to belief and hope. You give yourself(or people) that and you can do anything.
  • There are good people in this world and they can make bad mistakes. Doesn't make them bad people.
  • There are bad people in this world that may do some good sometimes. Doesn't make them good people.
  • The way Hackett carries himself and exudes confidence is everything you expect out of a any leader in the corporate or military space. I'm lucky to have someone like a Hackett in my professional life to mentor and guide me.

I hope you all find your Vakarians and Wrexes. Your Liaras/Talis. Your inner Shepards. And lose your Udinas and Wreaves.

Here's the the Mass Effect triogy!

We've had good ride. THE BEST.

Love you, N7 Squad! Thank you for the memories, Bioware!

DISCUSSION Thank you, Mass Effect, from a trans woman

I’ve been genuinely kind of sad about the Bioware news, so here are my sadgirl thoughts.

It’s been years since I last played, but Mass Effect is still a game I carry with me. I have a mass relay tattoo on my arm and a reaper tattoo coming next.

Mass Effect was the first (now that I think of it, only) time that an rpg completely sucked me in.

Getting lost in a roleplaying game where I could move through the world (galaxy?) as an openly gay woman was a formative experience for me. It’s a story that I consider a part of my transgender journey.

And the way the game is written, you’re not looked down upon for your identity. You’re a bad bitch who earns the respect of her peers through empathy and merit, who stands up for the people closest to her against adversaries that seem unbeatable because the galaxy is full of people she loves. Looking back, this was an early expression of the woman I wanted to become.

For a game that is at its heart a grand sci fi space opera about saving the galaxy, what makes Mass Effect stick for me is the deeply personal and human core of it. I suppose the game was designed to allow you to project your own self into the role, almost like a Rorsach test. So I saw myself in it. 🏳️‍⚧️

Thanks for being part of my journey, Mass Effect.

Thank you to Bioware. Thank you to all the developers, and writers. Thank you for everyone involved in making Mass Effect what it was.

"We will say goodbye, and you will look back one last time and know that wherever you go, we will be with you. This is Commander Shepard, signing off."

DISCUSSION The death of Mass Effect is the ultimate example of "Copyrot" in the games industry.

The thing that pisses me off about Bioware closing isn't bioware closing. 99% of all the people who worked on my favorite games are long gone and the culture is completely shifted, it isn't the same company. EA is basically just killing a corpse and clearly the new mass effect game was just a total failure of a development. What upsets me most is mass effect will become another victim of what I call "copyrot".

Since 2012 we've had a single Mass Effect game release. Think about that, one of the largest franchises in gaming, possibly one of the most popular scifi settings of all time. An entire fertile universe of stories that you can tell from low end gang stuff all the way up to galaxy threatening new stories. We got none of that and we're probably never getting it, not at least anytime soon.

We're not going to get any Turians or Quarians or anything from that setting we love, because what? Because EA holds the rights to a game series they are suddenly disinterested in and who basically all the people still at EA literally had nothing to do with (except canceling and mismanaging projects)? This is on EA as much as on Bioware, yet bioware dies and EA gets to hold onto the rights, how is that fair?

I'd venture 99% of the key decision makers at EA weren't even there when the lore of mass effect was written. Yet they own the rights to it, forever, and because they aren't interested in the series, it gets buried. Maybe they sell, but they won't. They'll cancel this game and shut the franchise down.

This to me is the best example of how copyright kills culture. There should be tons of stories inside the mass effect universe, it should be like star wars where countless different writers got to try their hands at it. It really is that good, it captured that many people's imaginations. The aliens are compelling, the lore is deep and interesting, there is genuinely so much more to explore here that never will be.

It's just so ass backwards, right now the guy who came up with the idea of Turians can't put them in a story he wants to write, because an Executive who never did a single thing to create mass effect gets to tell him no because "EA has the rights".

When I say I hate copyright, this is why. For every example of copyright protecting a creator, there seems to be 1,000 other examples of it screwing them and screwing everyone by allowing people who own companies who had nothing to do with actually creating their IPs to decide how the people who ACTUALLY came up with it or how society at large who are interested in it gets to use it.

So because EA technically has the rights and because EA is completely incompetent/disinterested in doing anything with the IP, it'll just rot. Copyrot forever, or until EA gets off their ass and decides they want to try doing something with that IP again. People who had NOTHING to do with what/who made mass effect so great as a series, getting decide we don't get any more mass effect anything, because it doesn't fit their times lines and projections.

It really sickens me, but you see this all over gaming. The Elder Scrolls is a great example, at least there you can say Todd Howard was crucial to the development of the series, so at least it is being caused by people who helped define the Elder Scrolls.

I'm not even touching on the fact that a company decided to bury one gaming's first big LGBT friendly franchises right after being bought by Saudi Arabia. I already have enough reason to be angry, but lets not forget that.

The famously LGBT friendly mass effect has to die, because a kingdom that executes homosexuals is now the "true owners", because copyright says so.

Fuck copyright, fuck EA and Fuck Saudi Arabia.
