Hello everyone,
As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.
Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.
When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)
This will work for posts only, not for comments.
There are some things to keep in mind:
When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.
Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.
We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.
That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.
Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.
Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.
Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.
Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.
Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.
We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.
Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

She had eosinophilic ulcers as a kitten and it ate away at a good portion of her mouth. Sheās ridiculously cute and I thought other people would enjoy her cuteness as well. Have a nice day ā¤ļø

On Monday, my wife and I said goodbye to our sweet girl, Zelda.
She was diagnosed with grade 3 mammary carcinoma a little over a year ago and underwent two surgeries to remove both mammary chains. We were fortunate to have more time with her afterward, but the cancer eventually returned, and we began noticing her health declining in recent weeks.
We took her to the vet after she became less active and developed a persistent cough, where we learned that the cancer had spread to her lungs and fluid was accumulating. We knew then that it was time to let her go.
As much as we wanted more time with her, we couldn't justify allowing her to suffer, so we chose to take on the pain of saying goodbye to spare her from the pain of staying.
I'm heartbroken, but there's some relief in knowing she isn't suffering anymore. I've spent much of the past year preparing myself for this day, though I'm sure the reality of her absence will continue to sink in.
Zelda was part of our family for 12 years. She was loved every single day, and our home won't be quite the same without her.
Rest easy, Zelda. We love you, and we'll miss you.

Would you consider my baby to be orange or tan? People say he's a gingy but I don't think so. His mom and 2 litter mates are identical in color to him.
As a baby he was super beige, light heavily creamer saturated coffee š when I adopted him I was obbsessed as I have never seen or I guess never paid attention to cats being this color.
Sorry if the flair is off, not sure what OC means.
***update: love all the comments and seeing some of your babies! Lol I felt wrong to put him as apart of the notorious orange crew š¤£. I think I'm going to run with champagne or diet orange (my favorite lmao)

[OC] I had to say goodbye to my childhood cat today. His name is Steve. I had him since he was 3 months old, when I was 10. He lived to a little older than 18, and I feel so blessed he made it so long. Most cats don't even make it to 15. He was the best orange boy, and I'm so happy I was able to say goodbye. I miss him and I am grieving so much, but I know he's no longer in pain. That matters to me more than anything else.
Please share pictures of your orange cats if you're able to š±š¤

Today is a heartbreaking day for us. Our cat, Mil Mil, has passed away far too young. She was probably not even two years old yet. I still remember finding her when she was just a tiny kitten, probably around two months old, all alone with no other cats around. Someone must have abandoned her there.
āIt had been a long time since we last cared for a cat. Her presence brought so much warmth and color into our home. When she was little, not a single day went by without me taking photos of her. She was so unique and sweet, and she never wandered far from home.
āThis morning, she was gone. I found her lifeless not far from our house. We suspect she might have eaten a mouse that had consumed rat poison outside. We never failed to keep her well-fed, and we always kept a close eye whenever she caught or brought home a mouse.
āShe leaves behind two 3-month-old kittens. They will surely miss their mother so much.
Goodbye! Rest in peace!

Hello everyone, this is a post for me and my cat. This wonderful half maine coon dapper boy is Tigger. For 14 years he has been one of my best friends.
We got Tigger when I was 8, he was the first cat my parents got for me to name and pick out. He was born to a full maine coon mother and a domestic shorthair father.
Since he was a tiny kitten, hes been playful, loving and a massive teddy bear.
He had to grow up beside someone who was 8 and very energetic so he is very tolerant.
For 14 years he has grown beside me and been here through very tough and very wonderful things.
Last saturday he came into my room and I noticed his belly was distended, swollen and hard like a balloon.
We called the vet and they did scans and an xray, he was an amazing little boy and needed no sedation, he let them do everything they needed.
She gave me a phone call initially after the xray and told me all around his organs is fluid and they were gonna do an ultrasound.
They proceeded to do the ultrasound and she prior warned me that this fluid could be caused by things with amazing prognosis and also super bad prognosis, expressing cancer is one of these things.
Not long after she rang me back up, expressing it was not good news. Theres a 5cm lump buried in his liver growing outwards.
She said anything further done such as bloodtests would merely be for information as she said I think we have our anwser.
She expressed that my Tiggy does not know he is sick, he is still alert and happy and its early end stage essentially.
We didn't get an estimate of how long we have as I did not see the point in putting my boy through more stress when none of those tests would help him.
We went and picked him up and I looked at the scans and seeing the lump broke my heart.
We have been doting on him ever since and giving him extra love. But it is heartbreaking, he can no longer jump up on places as effectively, he waddles when he walks, he has slowed down a lot, shows no interest in toys, no interest in catnip, and it is so saddening.
He loved toys and catnip and would go nuts for that stuff, he would find toys, carry them to us and yowl to let us know he caught them, he would also yowl on the unit to let us know he wanted food or biscuits.
Its a struggle to mourn something that isn't gone. We are pampering him while we have him here but I wanted to share about him so more people could know how amazing he truly is, here are some quirks and funny things he has done and testaments to his personality.
He has never bitten or scratched anyone not even on accident.
He has an obsession with a frog toy.
He is also obsessed with wrappers and plastic, loves waiting until you hear or see him with it then will carry it in his mouth and run off like a goober.
He loves cuddles and attention, he will lay across you wherever you are and give you love as if you are the only human on earth.
He still does and always has loved belly rubs, they are one of his favourite things.
He loves yogurt treats.
He is always concerned for our other cats and protects them and loves them all.
He will let you lay your head on him and fall asleep cuddled into him.
He is a scaredy cat despite his size, noises terrify him, fireworks, drills, thunder. Hes a large boy with loud fears.
He is always purring.
He loves food lol but thats every cat.
And lastly. He has saved my life sometimes and comforted me when I have had no one else in the quiet of life and the hardships and when I lost my second childhood cat that was gotten for me, he was there.
This is gonna be a very hard thing to go through, it already is. I lost my second childhood cat 3 years back to cancer too. He has an entire shelf dedicated to him and when my Tigger goes. He will be up there with Casper and tattooed next to Casper's paw on my wrist.
I know many may not read this. But one of the greatest things we have in this life is our furry companions regardless of species.
They give us their forever never knowing we can't give them ours.
If anyone else has gone through this, a terminal diagnosis on your furry friend. I'd love advice and to hear stories of how to cope or to memorise my baby.
If you read this all, thank you. I am happy you also somewhat get to know what an amazing boy my Tigger is. Have a lovely day.

Today was her last day on earth but I'll forever remember her.. She didn't like to be pet or held but she learned how to knock at my door so she could sleep beside me and I think it was her way to show affection without contact š
I hope now she's reunited with her kittens and husband that left before her š
Today is going to be a rough night not having her by my side..

weāve been together for 12 years now. Heās been by my side throughout my journey of growing into the man I am today, ever since my teenage years
i often wish I could apologize to him for not being the most attentive owner when I was a teenager. But itās been many years since I moved out of my parents place with him, and ever since, Iāve done everything I can to make sure heās comfortable and happy
his name is Mayak, which means ālighthouseā in my native language

Itās been two weeks since I had to let my baby boy go. He was 16. Lymphoma got him. Or, was getting him. We knew we had to help him go, because he was suffering and he was going to soldier on for us if we didnāt let him out of it.
I know it was the right thing for him. Iām not agonizing over the decision. And Iād be mourning him regardless. But what I canāt get over is that I couldnāt do what Iāve done for other pets and what I envisioned for him.
The lymphoma robbed him of his appetite. Even on steroids and even with Mirataz (which helped at first). He got to where he just wouldnāt eat. I had it planned out in my head, too. All his favorite foods that he had been limited on in life, heād have in abundance on his last day. He was going to have tuna for breakfast, snacks of bologna, some beef jerky, he was going to nibble some raising canes and then get some churu to wash it down, and some ācreamiesā as we joked he would have called ice cream.
But he couldnāt (or wouldnāt, one) eat anything. He was my best little dude, and heās been there for me and for my wife for so many years, and the fucking cancer robbed us and him of the last day he deserved.
It eats me alive. He deserved it all.
Edit: probably not going to surprise anyone who sees the number of comments, but I canāt possibly reply to everyone. Thank you all for sharing your kindness, your similar stories, and the pictures of your own little guys. Thanks sincerely.

While camping over the summer I caught and fixed 4 kittens. We kept this little gray tabby and named her Meadow (I named all the kittens after cabins at the campground). She was very spicy when we brought her home, but quickly got friendly and comfortable, and then started trying to get back outside. The other night while calling my dog in, she slipped out without me realizing, and spent the night outside. She came in with what I quickly suspected was dislocated hip. Of course it was a Saturday morning, so off to the emergency vet we went. They confirmed the dislocation, attempted to put the joint back in, which failed. Yesterday she went in for a FHO surgery (femoral head ostectomy). She is thankfully doing better. Definitely in less pain than before her surgery and desperately trying to escape the crate. She has to be confined for two weeks though, so she can heal.
Keep your kitties inside! It might just save you $5,000, and your kitty alot of pain. We have 2 other cats, one strictly indoor, and one indoor/outdoor. He has been very upset about his restricted outside time. I keep telling him we don't have any more cat surgery money, so he better keep his paws inside š

Edit - thank you for all of your kind words. Please hug your cats and always check the washer or dryer or under cars to make sure cats are not there.
This was my girl Reggie (we was told she was a boy when we got her but she turned out to be a girl) she climbed into the tumble dryer that had damp but still warm clothes from being dried and buried herself in the clothes. This is something she had NEVER done before.
My poor mum has then shut the door and turned the dryer on and went to bed without realising. We found her in there this morning. I am complete and utterly heartbroken, I've never experienced pain like this before. She didn't deserve to die like that or suffer the way she did, she was such a kind and loving baby girl. My mum is an absolute wreck and I don't know how to console her.
She loved boxes, dreamies and snuggling up into a dressing gown like a kangaroo, I called her kangareggie..I've put her in a box wrapped in my dressing gown and I'm going to bury her under a bush because she liked bushes. How am I ever going to move on from this? I'm completely and utterly devastated that she diedin such a tragic and preventable way. My heart is aching so much.

My cat died this week from a linear foreign body. She swallowed a long piece of braided fishing line. By the time we got to surgery it was wrapped under her tongue and ran the entire length of her intestines. She didnāt make it.
Iām posting this because I wish someone had told me these things more bluntly when it first started. Your cat will likely die if you do not act within 24-48 hours of ingestion.
It wasnāt obvious at first.
There was no dramatic gagging or obvious struggle when she took the line. I didnāt see her eat it and the rod never even moved. The first signs were vomiting (including some pink-tinged foam), then periods where she seemed better after fluids and anti-nausea medication. Because it wasnāt a clear, dramatic āshe just ate a long piece of stringā moment, I kept hoping it was something milder. That delay mattered.
Key things I wish I had known:
⢠Cats can break and swallow braided fishing line (even 20ā30 lb test) right off a rod with almost no struggle. You may not hear gagging or see them fighting it.
⢠Once it starts going in, the tiny barbs on a catās tongue make it extremely hard for them to spit it back out.
⢠It often anchors under the tongue (or in the stomach) while the rest is pulled deeper by normal gut movement. This turns it into a linear foreign body that saws through the intestines.
⢠This is an immediate emergency. Waiting a day or two to āsee if it passesā or hoping the cat improves can cost them their life.
⢠Pink-tinged foam or vomit can be an early sign that the line is already irritating or cutting tissue in the mouth/throat.
⢠One of the first things a vet should do is carefully check under the tongue. Owners can try, but it is often hard to see or reach safely without experience.
Take any evidence seriously.
Missing line on a rod, a cat that suddenly starts vomiting (especially with any pink tint), weird tongue movements, or just a gut feeling that something string-like could be involved ā treat it as urgent. Donāt wait for the cat to look āreally sick.ā Linear foreign bodies can progress quietly while the cat still has moments of looking okay.
If there is any real suspicion that your cat has swallowed a long string-like object (braided fishing line, sewing thread, yarn, ribbon, dental floss, etc.), get them to a vet the same day.
I delayed because she had moments of looking better and I didnāt think she could break 20+ pound line so easily. By the time the line had progressed all the way through, the damage was too severe.
Iām sharing this so someone else might catch it earlier than I did. Please donāt wait on this one.
Rest easy sweet Willow. I love you infinity ā¾ļøā¤ļø

Lana, as we just named her, came to your place looking very dirty and sick. Thankfully em she seems to have energy and sheās eating very well. Weāve been trying to clean her up gently but sheās still so dirty⦠Weāll take her to the vet as soon as we can.
Sheās very sweet, me and my family already love her. We hope to be able to help her.
Unfortunately our other two female cats are upset with us, they seem very jealous. Iām trying to give them more attention to see if they forgive us for the betrayal lol.
Iāll be updating you guys on her health. For now she seems happy to be with us, even though she doesnāt trust us 100%.
