Hated Tropes Things meant to be progressive just end up being incredibly offensive

What If - In one of the comics Miles becomes Thor, and it's full of stereotypes about black people such as the Mjolnir having graffiti on it and the infamous "by Odin's fade"

Emilia Perez - Everything about the movie

The cancelled 2020 New Warriors Reboot written by Daniel Kibblesmith and Luciano Vecchio. The plot was going to include the og New Warriors mentoring a new generation of "progressive" heroes. However, it was clear the writers only had a stereotypical idea of the characters they were writing, with the most notable example being the names of some of the heroes in the group, like "Snowflake" and "Safespace" and their designs reminiscent of ones made by Tumblr users to seem progressive, such as adding meaningless neon colours.

They clearly didn't think this through.

Black Bomber 2.0

Context, A long time ago when DC first started headlining black superhero their main draft was about a white obese racist solider in the Vietnam war that transform into a black guy under stress or when he says the N word. Alter ego jekyll and hyde situation.

Everyone hated it.

160

u/Forever_Man 10h ago

One reviewer said it was "offensive to anyone with any kind of point of view at all"

15

u/NeezDuts91 10h ago

This some Billy Madison shit

61

u/dead_parakeets 12h ago

I feel like I remember reading an article about that where the writer intentionally wrote the worst character he could think of and it got approved by editorial.

57

u/PirateKittyMeowMeow 10h ago edited 10h ago

No, it was the other way around. One of the editors at DC comics back then (can't remember the name) came up with the character concept as a sincere but hopelessly tone-deaf (even by 1970s standards) attempt to create a black superhero, but the writer that was put in charge of the actual script, Jenny Blake Isabella, refused to write it because she knew that it was a horrible idea, and convinced DC to use her own creation, Black Lightning, instead.

14

u/JSConrad45 10h ago

I completely missed that she came out last year, that's awesome.

When she was a kid, she ran a book club for comics in the local neighborhood. Most of the other kids in the club were black, and she decided that if she was ever able to make comics, she wanted to make comics for them and other kids like them. She did a lot of work on Luke Cage at Marvel, and created Misty Knight, before DC poached her to do Black Lightning. The terms of her deal with DC mean that she gets royalties any time they use Black Lightning, which is why there are a bunch of other electric-themed black heroes in DC: they kept making up new ones to avoid paying royalties on Black Lightning.

8

u/PirateKittyMeowMeow 9h ago edited 8h ago

I knew about Luke Cage and Misty Knight, but I had no idea about her book club, or that her inspiration to work on and create black characters was the black kids in her neighborhood. That's really sweet, and shines quite a light on her refusal to write Black Bomber!

3

u/GuardianOfThePark 5h ago

I mean, it also helped the fact that Black Bomber was the worst idea ever conceived in superhero history after Avengers #200.

14

u/MrWaluigi 11h ago

What was with the editorials back then? This, Ms. Marvel’s relationship with her paradox baby, and the Punch Dimension.

7

u/Kira-Of-Terraria 12h ago

wasn't his name Brown Bomber?

12

u/Chaosiumrae 11h ago

Brown Bomber is a parody callback of the Black Bomber.

Aka the only salvageable character from the roster

Edit: ok, maybe too harsh. The others just need A LOT of adjustments but B Negative is just the most salvageable

79

u/NinjaBreadManOO 9h ago

Yeah, between the Lannister siblings, kid who's power is the same as a phone, and a character who bears WAY too much of a resemblance to Dora the Explora the brand new teen vampire who fell for the marketing and got his gear from hot topic is probably the only salvageable character.

30

u/carso150 6h ago

kid who became a vampire and inmediately went to hot topic seems... yeah that seems like something that would actually happen

12

u/NinjaBreadManOO 6h ago

If you haven't go watch What We Do In The Shadows. It's got stuff like that all the time, like a character gets turned and begins asking if there's somewhere they have to go to get gothic vampire clothes or if his stuff is fine.

It's pretty good.

I quite like Safespace as a name, and think it would work for a paladin-type defensive character.

Just... Not the version they proposed. Because that was bad.

u/Flesroy 10h ago

i can see the idea behind it working, but the word safespace is just not an option anymore. i'm sure there is a name that can convey the same meaning without making people cringe because of politics.

u/SpaceGiraffeInSpace 11h ago

Poor Trailblazer

18

u/Funkycoldmedici 10h ago

That’s literally the gag. It was a humor miniseries by one of the Colbert Report writers. It was more of that, making fun of what conservatives say everything is.

8

u/Theorist129 8h ago

Looked into it, Kibblesmith only wrote for the Late Show, not Colbert Report, fwiw. However, his history does fall into what you're talking about. He was a founding editor for Clickhole, the Onion's Buzzfeed parody, he ran a "GOP Teens" parody account on Twitter, and wrote a picture book about a black gay Santa Claus seemingly mostly for subversiveness' sake.

Well, I shall take up your banner, good Medici, and whenever I see it come up, I will note that it's from a founding editor of Clickhole, so the blatant absurdity is likely at the least not unthinking.

265

u/ItsWelp 12h ago

Honestly I can’t bring myself to believe this was done in good faith. Safespace maybe I could get, but Snowflake has been an insult for progressives/"wokes" for a looong time. It felt like the kind of stuff Stonetoss would come up with.

132

u/DinkleDonkerAAA 12h ago

u/Crusaderofthots420 12h ago

48

u/Infamous-Warthog8555 11h ago

Tbh, wouldn’t be surprised if that character existed. No bigot would write a comic about him. It would be made by the gayest dude you ever met.

96

u/bio4320 11h ago

I've always believed that it was intentionally absurd. The New Warriors have often been a commentary on "corporate" heroes, from having their own TV show to starting Civil War because of their recklessness to having their team basically usurped by Norman Osborn. I thought the New New Warriors had a lot of potential as an over-the-top parody of rainbow capitalism and could tell an interesting story on who the characters wanted to be past their corporate branding. Maybe I'm giving too much credit but with the team's history I can't imagine it was intended to be played straight.

23

u/CourseSpare7641 11h ago

that would require marvel to actually write a good story

12

u/Funkycoldmedici 10h ago

It definitely was poking fun at conservative fears. The writer did exactly the same thing for Colbert for years. This one was even right on the heels of a Great Lakes Avengers with a woman who turns into a blue-furred male werewolf called Good Boy. It’s insane how anyone thought this was anything but a comedy miniseries.

18

u/switch2591 11h ago

See, that's sort of howni'd go with the idea: the hero identities and backstories are just lumped onto the kids by corporate who "test screened" the names, costumes and backstories etc.

However, given the quick cancellation before launch due to Covid19, no attempt at brining the series back up (the marvel event in question ending), and only one of the character (BNegative) appearing in the pages of anothet series, i have a gut feeling that this entire New New Warriors set up was meant to be played straight and not as a commentary on rainbow capitalism.

12

u/Funkycoldmedici 10h ago

The writer’s entire career has been making fun of conservative fears and accusations. There is no chance this was anything different.

6

u/UnquestionabIe 9h ago

Personally I loved X-Statix back in the day. Great parody of both how Marvel treated the X-Men franchise as a cash cow and celebrity/outrage culture of the era. That it was in continuity made it all the better, with such classics such as "Being black while being a mutant is like being black with a little black on top" and of course the plan to have the late Princess Diana come back from the dead (per her mutant ability) and join the team!

6

u/No-Scientist-5537 12h ago

The book never came out and those superheroes were meant to be corporate sponsored, so it could been meant to be oarody of corporate trying to appeal to "youth these days". We'll never know

23

u/Kozmo9 12h ago

You'd be surprised to find that a lot of terrible stuff were done in good faith. That's because their definition of good faith differs from the normal.

Double standards especially in depicting racism is one example. "I'm going to make a show that tackles racism so as to make the whites realise how terrible they are! What's that? The black characters commited racism and are terrible characters themselves? That's BS because black on white racism doesn't exist! Oh and the black characters were terrible because of the whites! So they are not at fault!"

Internet gas!

95

u/RedZingyHedgehog 12h ago

The rumour was, before it was cancelled, that these were kids brought in by corporations to appeal to the kids and they would eventually realise they were working for the bad guys and turn on them. As a commentary on how out of touch and faux supportive capitalists can be I think it could have worked. Shame, we'll never get to know as the internet reacted so badly.

53

u/NWStormraider 12h ago

I mean, I don't think it being self aware makes it any better, just even more insincere. "Haha, get it, we are fully aware all of this is performative, isn't this funny?

4

It basically was. The characters were kind of riffs on the way that comic writers used to take simplified versions of modern trends, and base characters off of them. Snowflake might’ve worked in the hands of a better writer. They were non-binary with ice powers, so they could be reclaiming an insult used against them. But again, that would require a good writer.

3

u/Loose_Translator8981 12h ago

Yeah, I think pairing them with someone named Safespace was way, way too much. Like. maybe if they were on the same team but unrelated it might be ignorable, but making them explicitly a pair of siblings with similar outfits and even hairstyles makes it impossible to take either of them seriously.

7

u/NwgrdrXI 12h ago

Biggest problem with snowflake and safespace is that they're mean to be non-binary, but are clearly designed as male and female.

16

u/Ambaryerno 12h ago

"Non-binary" is not the same thing as "androgynous." They can absolutely look male or female.

7

u/memecrusader_ 12h ago

Snowflake is non-binary, Safespace isn’t.

Whenever I remeber it nearly existed I feel like everything before 2021 was one big fever dream.

13

u/Kerl_of_Fox_County 12h ago

Similar energy to I Am Not Starfire which used the name of a beloved DC heroine for a story about, effectively, an unlikeable self-insert.. whilst trying to 'modern'.

9

u/Acrobatic_Expert1372 12h ago

Which led to a hate campaign against the writer including death and rape threats

I’d be curious about it as a one shot? One of those look how progressive we are moments. That would be so on the nose it comes off as pandering. Lesbian Space Princesses?

3

u/LeavesOfNonsense 11h ago

Wasn't it later revealed that the author intentionally made it as stupid as possible as a joke?

3

u/Snoo_72851 10h ago

Being real, I love the cancelled New Warriors. I want them to get a run more than I care about the entire MCU.

5

u/Wiinterfang 12h ago

The worst part is that without the culture war baggage, Snowflake and Safespace are cool superhero names.

Safespace is particularly great one for a rescue type hero.

So I know internet gas guy, the twins snowflake and safespace because Jesus those names, and morbious Jr that actually made it to canon, but who's the last one? I've never heard anything about them, they seems the most boring of all of them which seems conterproductive to whatever they were going for.

u/MessageTurbulent7285 10h ago

This will forever be one of the funniest things marvel has ever done

2

u/Kazfiddly 9h ago

Jesus Christ. Snowflake? Safespace?

It sounds like a parody Matt Walsh's company would make.

2

u/Canai97 9h ago

I get everyone's main gripe is with the twins but I still to this day can't get over the green visor guy's origin being that he got his powers from internet fart gas.

2

u/Growka3 9h ago

I fully expected them to be the second slide of this post. Still not sure how this was possibly concieved without SOMEONE taking the piss.

3

u/Funkycoldmedici 8h ago

It absolutely was. The writer has only done comedy making fun of conservative fears his entire career.
