And then when it's done, the day is over.

525

u/DoorstepCult Sep 12 '26

Right! Because I’ve also failed to plan anything after my 2 o’ clock just in case it runs a little late or something.

711

u/Electrical_Fee9766 Sep 12 '26

I'm also tired FROM waiting.

128

u/NoKatyDidnt Sep 12 '26

Especially when you’ve had to “hurry up and wait”. Rush rush rush - oh, now sit.

42

u/DoorstepCult Sep 12 '26

My guy. I’m a cook in a retirement home. Hurry up and wait is my motto. They demand mealtimes to start down to the very second and then tell us they’re waiting for guests who will be showing up round closing time. 🙃

10

u/blueeyeswhitestripe Sep 13 '26

I do not miss those days. I was a waitress at a retirement home for 10 years 🙃

11

u/somecow Sep 13 '26

Agnes has to get ready for her big busy day, give her a few hours to do her hair. lol this is where room service comes in.

10

u/Mordilaa Sep 13 '26

Waiting to do something is fucking exhausting.

This phenomenon has gotten to the point I stop making plans because that will become my day and that’s not what I want to do all day when I’m not working.

22

u/RepulsiveCamel8166 Sep 13 '26

Tired from anticipating. No wonder. Anticipating holds so much energy when you think about it. Vigilance and anxiety. No wonder we're tired.

10

u/techslice87 Sep 13 '26

A little? I've had a 2pm start at 3pm. A 2pm appt is either boom you're done or there goes the whole afternoon. There is no in between

The sheer anxiety and exhaustion of waiting until 2p has been too much

5

u/hannibalthellamabal Sep 13 '26

Literally I'm coming home and having a nap. When all the stress leaves me I get pass out tired.

154

u/NoKatyDidnt Sep 12 '26

YES! WHY???

362

u/RekhetKa Sep 12 '26

That's called ✨️Anxiety✨️ and it has no logic

90

u/Odd_Philosopher_240 Sep 12 '26

It's such a nice thing to happen as I get my blood pressure checked for a doctor's visit.

86

u/HungryGlizzyGobbler Sep 12 '26

Every time they are like, wow we'll try again at the end of the appointment. Then they are like huh it's still high. That's my secret, cap; I'm always having an anxiety attack.

13

u/TheRealJamesFM Sep 13 '26

I thought I was the only one. Lmao. 😆

13

u/FlipGordon Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

They always have to do mine 2-4 times and I always assure them it will go down by then end.

For some reason my eyes and brain see that blood pressure cuff and they tell my heart to start acting like we all just ran a fucking mile.

Ive been told I have "white coat syndrome." So what happens is i involuntarily start panicking when I get my blood pressure taken. So I have to close my eyes after slowly swaying and they have to surprise me. Its...a lot

20

u/Butterfly_and_Bee Sep 12 '26

Butterflies aren’t anxiety, they’re excited anticipation and some people find them pleasurable. Yes, they are associated with anxiety for people who have anxiety, but it might be helpful to reframe butterflies as something curious or fun rather than worrisome. It’s just how adrenaline feels. Your body is preparing you to be perfectly alert for your task by giving you free, natural drugs. Enjoy the ride!

21

u/RekhetKa Sep 13 '26

I mean, I put the sparkles around it, does that help? :P

Also you can't sleep the night before because you know sleep is important, so you stress out about how many hours you can still get. Continuously until you get none at all.

30

u/frogdujour Sep 13 '26

However, at exactly 15 minutes before your alarm goes off, that's the moment when you magically gain super sleep powers and lose all waking up powers.

94

What about just having 7 calls a day? No time to panic about the afternoon calls when you're on the morning calls.

23

u/Cool-General2693 Sep 12 '26

This is the way 🤣. 40+ meetings a week

8

The secret is to make them post lunch. Lunch interrupts your flow anyway so your mornings can be the same as always. Afternoons have that energy slump where nothing useful happens anyway, so why not waste time on those pointless meetings?

"Waiting mode" is a common symptom of executive dysfunction and if you're losing large blocks of time to it you should seek professional help. It's usually part of a bigger problem.

6

u/Empty-Dragonfruit656 Sep 13 '26

Had to look up executive disfunction. Interesting. I do waiting mode if someone else is going to be inconvenienced by me, but am fine with complex time management tasks if the order of tasks only impacts me.

The unknown unknowns of getting somewhere or having something complete and impacting others impacts my function for that day.

4

u/Illimited_Esoterica Sep 13 '26

Everyone has some of it but people who are full-on like "I can't do anything this morning because I have an appointment at 1 pm" are usually struggling with a bigger issue that they can improve with help.

5

u/trillionaireUnaliver Sep 13 '26

translation: adhd and maybe the 'tism, do meth about it.

7

u/nazukeru 1987 Sep 12 '26

I make all my appointments for the end of the work day lol. Then I can just work all day and not think about it. Unfortunately doesn't work for social engagements 🫠

11

u/Ymisoqt420 Sep 12 '26

I tried that and thought of the appointment all day lol

6

u/TheScrambone Sep 12 '26

I remember as a kid if I had an appointment and had to leave school early, I wasn’t paying attention to shit.

12

u/XxnervousneptunexX Sep 12 '26

This, whenever I have an appointment I tell them don't care what day just make it early as possible. It's a game changer with medical appointments cuz less likely the doc is running late.

6

u/PunkRockTaterTot Sep 12 '26

And then, since you did the adult thing in the morning, you get to reward yourself for the rest of the day by relaxing? Right? 😅

5

I have a doctor's appointment at 2pm.

I take the whole day off work.

35

u/ComedicThunder Sep 12 '26

Woah! You never give a time. You just say i have an appointment on this day and won't be in. They don't know if it's local or not. Never cheat yourself outta an entire day by saying something that will lead into "I can work until..."

19

u/ernirn Sep 12 '26

Although... sometimes that is by design

5

u/UnNumbFool Sep 13 '26

Why wouldn't you take the day off? Dr appointments and the like are the best excuse to use a random PTO day

2

u/NoSloppyStakes Sep 13 '26

I luckily haven’t EVER had an issue taking a day off in the past 10+ of work no matter the job, retail, office, work at home, etc.

I just told my boss I’m going on PTO. So no, I never used my PTO for doctor appointments. I just use the bare minimum and schedule my appointments at the end of the day. Use the most little as possible on those days.

2

u/UnNumbFool Sep 13 '26

Oh I didn't mean in the sense of getting permission from work to take a day off, but more personal permission to do so. You know a "oh no I accidentally scheduled this appointment at 9am next Friday, might as well just take the day off instead of doing a half day" type of thing.

But I'm also someone who doesn't use sick/vacation days as much as a should so any excuse is a good excuse to me

4

u/platysoup Sep 12 '26

No, no. This is just called being smart.

8

u/NoSloppyStakes Sep 13 '26

Why?

I literally schedule all my local appointments at 4:00 to 4:30 PM. (Please people don’t do this because my time slot will be lost lol)

So I just leave work early, head to the appointment, and go home right after.

That way I barely use any time off and still work.

Anything during the day or morning, if it is a workday, throws the rest of the day off or the dread of going back to work after an appointment is terrible.

9

u/Thelonius_Dunk Sep 13 '26

I take the whole day off for Dr appointments so I can burn sick days. Ours don't roll over so I use them to get more time off.

My therapist recommended making a list of “bridge tasks” that are in the 15 minute range so I could find these to fill time when waiting on something else.

24

u/log_2 Sep 13 '26

Then the 15 minute tasks takes 2 hours and you didn't notice you missed your meeting.

10

u/squashhime Sep 13 '26

yeah i told mine that i don't get to do any of my hobbies like reading anymore when im so busy with work.

then i told them i also doomscroll whenever i'm waiting for the bus/appointment/whatever because i can't start anything.

they said "why don't you just pick up a book to read whenever you're just waiting." and i was going to be like "it's not that simple," but it turned out to actually just be that simple.

We have ADHD.

71

u/Same_Currency_1695 Sep 12 '26

Honestly though. I just got diagnosed at 38. The masking has led to burnout 😮‍💨

31

u/scruffalump Sep 12 '26

Man is this stuff really indicative of adhd, because Im so surprised how relatable this entire thread is, and now Im concerned lol

17

u/Wide-Explanation-353 Sep 12 '26

It can be. I’d suggest looking up signs of adhd in women and see how many apply to you. I got diagnosed at 42. Personally, having an afternoon appointment is no big deal for me, I can do things in the morning, but I have trouble with transitions between tasks and starting tasks and everything slowly got harder after having a kid and starting perimenopause.

8

u/scruffalump Sep 12 '26

I just did, and too much of this sounds way too familiar 🫩 even what you said about transitioning tasks is familiar. I usually end up getting overwhelmed, not knowing what to do, and then abandoning whatever it was I was supposed to be doing. Organization and planning as well have been a lifelong struggle for me and it only seems to be getting worse as I get older. I just thought I was stupid/lazy.

10

u/YouGlittering9156 Sep 13 '26

I'm a guy, but... if you were labeled as a procrastinator growing up because you wait until last second panic hits to do tasks, it's very indicative of ADHD. You probably find it strange because you actually WANT to do said task, but you can't force yourself until that panic sets in. You probably are critical of yourself and tell yourself that you're just lazy because that's what you've heard.

u/wayneforest Sep 13 '26

Your last sentence really got to me. So many people relate to it, truly. I was diagnosed in my mid-thirties. My mother was finally diagnosed in her sixties. There is an entire lost generation of women who went undiagnosed and overlooked when it came to ADHD (literally you can google the three words “lost generation adhd” and you’ll find so much research, articles, insight, etc.)

Anyways, if you found that these things in the comments and post relate to your decades of lived experiences, then I hope you’ll consider talking with your doctor about potentially getting a proper diagnosis. Some doctors will still dismiss the idea and say “well you did good in school, so you can’t have adhd.” So many of us were overlooked in the first place because it can present differently than the mainstream idea of “7 year old boy jumping off the walls!”

Just know, if that is the response or reaction you get from your doctor, that it’s okay to seek out a second opinion in order to find a doctor who is more up to date and knowledgeable about what ADHD actually is and how it impacts daily life. Hope you can find some peace and understanding about yourself soon.

2

u/scruffalump Sep 14 '26

I was told before that someone at my school told my mother that I had ADD (not adhd, but I guess theyre the same now?), but she didnt believe it and neither did my grandmother because in her words, "you used to play your Gameboy for so long that you can't have adhd" lol. I wish this had been addressed when I was a child because I feel like leaving this untreated has devastated my life, and it only keeps getting worse. But I think I'll finally get a primary doctor and look into this, thanks for your response and advice!

I’m the same. If I don’t get an answer to a work email right away, I can’t really focus in other tasks

11

u/Formal_Blueberry_973 Sep 12 '26

Oh I have the opposite. If I don’t answer an email right away my day is falling apart. I’m trying to learn to let things sit for at least an hour, but I’ve always been so on top of things that if I don’t answer someone within 1-2 hours, they are sending me teams messages asking if I saw their email.

It’s leading me to a burn out.

3

u/espresso_martini__ Sep 12 '26

age definitely has an effect. My mum is the worst. She calls me in the morning to make sure I'm ready to take her to the airport. "We have to be out there by 1pm", "When's your flight?", "7pm"... Its a 1 hour drive.

4

u/frogdujour Sep 13 '26

I don't think this is quite the same thing, maybe another flavor of anxiety, like it can be simply over-worrying about surprise delays and being extra extra careful. The post is more like, any impending scheduled task prevents initiating any other task until it's done, even when there are plenty of hours completely free prior.

Now, if I have a 7pm flight home from vacation, and yet need to waste the whole final day sitting in a chair doing absolutely nothing because any activity at all makes me too anxious while knowing my flight is that day, then it's the same thing.

3

u/espresso_martini__ Sep 13 '26

It’s probably ADHD dawg.

15

u/IndependenceLive3786 Sep 12 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

Everyone in the thread saying this is an ADHD behaviour, but is there a generally accepted explanatory theory of what's going on and why we do it? Is it a maladaptive coping pattern?

My guess is a form of task paralysis from apprehension anxiety, of, 'shit I better not forget the appointment, or I'll fuck something up', and then I let it disproportionately take over cognitive resources and time in the day.

12

u/Tysiliogogogoch Sep 13 '26

It's not ADHD for me, just regular anxiety. I'm not worried about losing track of time or anything like that. It's just that I'm stuck thinking about the thing and going over and over in my head about how it might go, all the things that might go wrong, all that sort of nonsense. My anxiety often has me pondering the worst case scenarios which drains my desire to do anything else.

7

u/Svencredible Sep 13 '26

Lots of reasons, one is time blindness.

There's Now and there's Not-Now. It doesn't matter if the appointment is 5 minutes away or 5 hours away, it's not now and we need to prepare for it.

For the same reasons, starting any task feels risky. We know we can easily just lose track of time and then we miss the appointment. So you don't start anything and just watch the clock.

10

u/Waiting2Sneeze Sep 12 '26

That doesn't even explain the self-inflicted chaos I on myself by sleeping in until 10 minutes before the call, getting the call on the wrong phone that I had planned that only had 1% battery left, and then not getting the answer that I hoped for with the techn support.

Keep in mind, anxiety can actually be a symptom of ADHD too.

And I'll still be late for the fucking appointment.

2

u/YesMyNameReally Sep 12 '26

I do it and have my whole adult life. I never realized it was an ADHD until I started going reading about symptoms and other things to see if what I was doing was related to ADHD or something else.

5

u/BroForceOne Sep 12 '26

What are they doing a gut and remodel of the kitchen? What task at home can’t be done in 4 hours?

5

u/Y2K-enn Sep 12 '26

Absolutely me.
9:30am - Dogs have to potty? aw dude, make it quick, I don't want to be late.

5

u/xxhotandspicyxx Sep 12 '26

This resonates with being introverted, not so much being a millenial.

4

u/OMG_ITS_BIG_TUNA Sep 12 '26

Annnnnnnnnnnnd I’m late…. shit

5

u/FireflyRave Sep 13 '26

What laziness is that? Wait until 2 pm.

Your appointment is at 2pm. Which means you need to be checking in by 1:45. So your planned mode of transportation needs to get you there no later than 1:35-1:40.

Which means you need to leave the house by X.
So you have to start getting ready at Y.

While checking the time every 10-15 minutes since 9:00 in the morning.

u/AccordingBuffalo7835 Sep 12 '26

Yes, but I have diagnoses for this

5

u/makingspooky Elder Millennial Emo Sep 12 '26

This is an ADHD thing? How?

I definitely do this. Now I wonder what else I do that is ADHD coded.... What do I do about it?

5

u/rykcon Sep 12 '26

Vyvanse. You get vyvanse.

4

u/TheGreatBeldezar Sep 12 '26

If you're already in your 30s like me, you've probably learned to cope through raw dogging life with adhd. Some people get diagnosed late in life, meds might help.

Accounts like this guys really make me feel called out 😂 https://youtube.com/shorts/zvwLqlMO05k?is=f1WMpmyeIzG2YVle

7

u/miked5122 Sep 12 '26

Nope. I'm going to cram as much as possibley can in before 2 and then make myself anxious as I'm almost late to my 2 o clock appointment

3

u/Figmentdreamer Sep 12 '26

This is why I prefer morning appointments, gets it done

3

u/NurgleMinion Sep 12 '26

That's part of why I wake up an hour before I go to work, despite working second shift. Could I go to sleep when I get home, and wake up early? Yes, but I'll just sit there stressing out until I have to go in

3

u/Obvious-Position-351 Sep 12 '26

It's even worse for me if it's a work meeting. It's like my brain needs to prepare for the meeting all day and then decompress afterwards.

I have an evening shift. No matter how early I get up, I feel unable to go out and meet friends or do other activities with work hanging over me later. I don't know how to break this habit of thinking I can't do other things outside the house beforehand lol

3

u/laflex Sep 12 '26

As a person who enjoys smoking weed nothing is more frustrating than an important afternoon engagement.

3

u/Extreme_Kale_6446 Sep 12 '26

Hello, another neurodivergent person!

2

u/JimmyGreyArea Sep 12 '26

Shifting gears was a skill I had to relearn in my late 20s. Was so easy as a kid.

2

u/Chumlee1917 Sep 12 '26

2pm means I might I have to run to get coffee at 9am but depending on how far I have to drive, I absolutely have to be pulling into the parking lot of my appointment by 1:30 at the earliest, maybe I can find something to do that’s way way closer to where my appointment is and that way I can’t be late due to traffic and

I am in this picture and I don’t like it

2

u/bean_bag_guy Sep 12 '26

That’s why I don’t like making appointments at 2pm

2

u/Knight-ofNi7 Sep 12 '26

I started working a nightshift and originally I tried waking up to enjoy the mornings. I could not. Now I simply get ready just before I need to leave.

2

u/_Deedee_Megadoodoo_ 1995 Sep 12 '26

Every little thing takes so much energy now

2

u/sacred-pathways Sep 12 '26

I need my appointment to be first thing in the morning. It’s a non-negotiable. The only thing that sucks about that is The Tired™️

2

u/rhoward8916 Millennial Sep 12 '26

The only thing that ever helped me overcome this was becoming a parent. Now I can fit what feels like a millions things in a day and I’m more exhausted and burnt out than ever! 🫠

2

u/Fun_Boot7771 Sep 12 '26

2pm appointment means 12.45...you still need to commute

2

u/Ravenwight Millennial Sep 12 '26

I have enough spoons to get there, do the social thing, and get home.

If I spend them beforehand, I’ll have to borrow from tomorrow, just to get through today.

2

u/UserAllusion Sep 13 '26

It’s 9am. And I should probably take lunch around noon, so that’s not enough time to really get started on anything. Then after lunch, I get off work at 4, so I don’t really think I can get started on anything then either.

2

u/HilariousMax Sep 13 '26

Oh the real fun thing is when you also procrastinate The Thing You Need To Get Done until The Day Of The Thing because I mean, why would you do it sooner when there's so many other things you could do, right? And then you spend the entirety of The Day Of The Thing desperately trying to get The Thing You Need To Get Done done and it's so stressful every time for absolutely no reason and still we don't learn that this is self-afflicted so we can do it again next time.

2

u/LordLaz1985 Sep 13 '26

As someone with ADHD, I think this might be an ADHD thing.

2

u/KingKoopaz Sep 14 '26

No I only give myself 30-60 min window before plus travel time free around the house or something/I meat eat first. That way I can always be in time but also get stuff done earlier

2

u/KnownLetterhead7279 Sep 12 '26

No .. wake up at 9…that’s 5 hours of nothing!

2

u/NonGeneriComplaint Sep 12 '26

Its called severe ADHD

2

u/silverheart-nine Sep 12 '26

Other people do this, yes... Usually because they have ADHD and/or anxiety issues.

Do we have a running tally of poor souls suddenly realizing they likely have ADHD in here yet?

1

u/INTJinx Sep 12 '26

Sometimes I start work at 1pm and it’s such a waste of a day. I wake up at 6, too.

1

u/Defy19 Sep 12 '26

If I can’t make an appointment morning or afternoon I’ll take sick leave from work and fill the whole day with chores, errands, other appointments, and try and get a decent bike ride in.

I hate waiting and can’t stand wasting a day

1

u/Nuzzleville Sep 12 '26

Walk on the treadmill and fix myself something to eat.

1

u/Dear-Interaction6507 Sep 12 '26

🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

1

u/derpling0719 Sep 12 '26

This is precisely why I schedule my appointments first thing in the morning so I don’t waste my day waiting to go to the appointment.

1

u/Mediocre-Ease1049 Sep 12 '26

That’s why whenever I can I try to book it just 2h before

1

u/Blanc_Otaku Sep 12 '26

I do the Hurry up and Wait method you see in the military. Why yes, My appointment IS at 2 p.m. and it is currently noon, I can wait until it's ready

1

u/20grae Sep 12 '26

I work untill 130 and then tell boss man I’ll be back at 3 or 330 I’m only use my time in 30 min increments

1

u/TylerHyena Sep 12 '26

Guilty of this every now and then, but I will find myself doing relatively easy tasks in between that time and then maybe relaxing if I get it done quickly enough.
