i completely forgot faye is actually laufey in the game so i immediately thought of the singer when i saw the title

edit: faye not freya im dumb

71

u/Thomp_Son Jun 02 '26

Nerd ass correction from my side but I have to - You mean Faye, not Freya hahaha

11

u/HispanicAtTehDisco Jun 02 '26

i’m dumb lmao it was faye not freya you are right

3

u/pratzc07 Jun 03 '26

Freya is another character

15

u/Bariumdiawesomenite Jun 02 '26

Faye* is actually Laufey in the game. Freya is the witch and mom of Baldur.

5

u/ralphsquirrel Jun 03 '26

I was like, wait, Laufey was in God of War?? Then I looked up the cast and felt dumb

4

u/seoulstyle Jun 02 '26

I guess you could say you saw it that way From The Start.

Loki's mother in Norse Mythology.... Or father if we're talking the MCU.

She is a wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus.

That woman who wanted Kratos to chop some specific trees marked with yellow paint at start of nordic God of War 2018.

They say it's a realm where gods go when they die . I think it'd be cool cause it'd mean we get to see the Greek Gods again and it could build a nice bridge between the new trilogy and the old.

23

u/FFDiddly Jun 03 '26

I thought the same thing while watching with my friend. I said holy crap is Faye going to run into Zues!?

13

u/Anubra_Khan Jun 03 '26

Or Kratos... the former Greek God of War

4

u/DerkFinger Jun 03 '26

Yoooo this would be wild, the time travel at the end of GOW2 could play into that theory seeing as Kratos time traveled to the moment he died and you could litterally see your own corpse. It'd be kimda cool if there was a ragebound earlier version of Kratos that went to the realm of the dead.

5

u/Anubra_Khan Jun 03 '26

Yeah dude. I really love the idea of Fey's story being concurrent with Kratos/Atreus story. The way time acts differently between realms, they can really do anything they want with the story and make it make sense.

2

u/Wardock8 Jun 04 '26

Imagine you run into Kratos and Zeus, still throwing hands decades later because neither of them are willing to budge on their beliefs.

Troubles with her father in law. Classic experience

10

u/DaLegend82 Jun 03 '26

We could even see Thor (i hope)

3

u/CharacterArrival21 Jun 03 '26

I hope he teams up with Faye for a short period time as a “thank you” to Kratos

4

u/ChubbyUnicorn726 Jun 03 '26

I too hope that when I die, I get to go to the afterlife and beat the shit out of my spouse's abusive family.

3

u/iambatman_2006 Jun 03 '26

woooo I hope that actually happens that would be so cool ngl

3

u/catmanten Jun 03 '26

I hope Odin is still in that marble, be funny if they GladOs’d him

2

u/Splash_Woman Jun 03 '26

Would be funny to see a mad Helios; and Kratos goes “yeah; you’re right” and Helios gets puzzled being that he’s only known Kratos as the raging man from long ago.

2

u/Snoo9648 Jun 04 '26

Might have some Egyptian or Asian gods too.

I actually love my mom

4

2

Didn't realize the Norse GoW games were so hated until now I guess lol. I thought it looked pretty good too though!

131

u/kingkellogg Jun 02 '26

There's a large part of the og gow fans who really dislike the new games and the new fanbase even, and a lot of the new fans insult the old games when they didn't even play them

It's very odd

85

u/phamtomhaunter6 Jun 02 '26

Played both, loved both. I really don’t get the hate for either.

20

u/freetotebag Jun 03 '26

Same I like both eras. I sometimes miss the old style though. The Norse games have def followed the Sony AAA structure but that’s not always a bad thing.

19

u/DragonFangGangBang Jun 03 '26

This. There was something special about that hack-n-slash gameplay that the new games really lack, but the new ones more than make up for it with a fantastic narrative IMO. I love both.

4

u/BeansWereHere Jun 03 '26

My biggest issue with the newer games is hit reactions and the lack of verticality. When you hit enemies with light attacks they barely flinch, the impact does not feel good. Also, the camera was so close to Kratos which felt very claustrophobic.

However, in Laufey it looks like they’ve fixed all my issues. Enemies react to hits much better, you’ve got air combos back and the camera is pulled by slightly. Pretty excited.

2

u/DaLegend82 Jun 03 '26

My guess is that this is a test for the OG remakes.

Played every single game. Partial to the OG’s. 2018 was good but Ragnarok felt like a sequel for sequels sake, was not feeling it.

u/KingCarbon1807 Jun 03 '26

Tribalism for the L. New games weren't my vibe but I still respect the series.

Except sons of Sparta, wtf even was that.

4

u/kingkellogg Jun 03 '26

I know next to nothing if sons to sparda lol

Just saw the one trailer

4

u/_soap666 Jun 03 '26

I'm an og fan from ps2 era. I played through the first new God of war on the hardest difficulty. Played the hell out of it It was a good game, but not really what I wanted from God of war. It kinda feels like a marvel movie and I hate that style of writing. The new fan base turns me off as well. The whole forced kratos is a wholesome dad chungus BOY BOY BOY BOY BOY shit is annoying. I wasn't interested when the second one came out and haven't played it.

2

u/kingkellogg Jun 03 '26

Ok I totally get that, and yeah the new fanbase is...odd and can be really toxic

5

u/TheRealDripBentley Jun 03 '26

What is odd about people disliking a product? That doesn't make any sense? Original fans preferring the original and the criticisms ragnarok got from the new fans about it's hand-holdy nature just seem like mundane, normal opinions.

What is even remotely odd about this?

5

u/kingkellogg Jun 03 '26

I meany the disliking the originals without playing them is odd

3

u/kingkellogg Jun 03 '26

I think it’s mostly from GoW “traditionalists.” I believe the Norse saga has been broadly appealing in the age of narrative-heavy, emotional storytelling games. I think they’re still generally well liked within the series fandom

E: “more” broadly appealing is probably inaccurate. I’d guess about equal

28

u/Dhenn004 Jun 02 '26

They really arent in the grand scheme of things. General reception is well recieved. I wouldn't take the loud minority of complainers on reddit as an indication of its reception.

12

u/AssDiddler69 Jun 02 '26

If we're being honest, the last person you wanna listen to over anything is a redditor.

6

u/Dhenn004 Jun 02 '26

Yea... absolutely true lmao

1

u/TheMessyChef Jun 03 '26

I think Twitter users take the cake on that front. The game's announcement has been completely brigaded by all the weird far-right incel/misogynist dorks. It's every fucking day with them 😭

17

u/Calamity-Vanity Jun 02 '26

Theres a fringe group of people who dont like that Kratos had any character development at all and want him to remain an enraged power fantasy because forbid any character has even a speck of self reflection or personal growth.

I love the original trilogy, I really do, I grew up with them just like a ton of people did. But I was really glad to see the direction of the new games and really enjoy seeing kratos struggle to be better and finding a soft place to land after years of struggle.

2

u/CertainGrade7937 Jun 03 '26

Both people exist. There are people that just don't like the new combat system much, and there are people that really dislike the story direction

Spend some time in the fandom, you'll see people obsessed with the idea of turning Kratos back into an uncontrollable rage monster who fucks

→ More replies (2)

3

u/richtofin819 Jun 03 '26

See I personally like the new games but I'm pretty pissed with this direction.

We were told that the reason Ragnarok was pretty much rushing what was originally a trilogy was because they didn't want to keep making games in the norse saga and wanted to move on. But now it turns out that was a lie because they did want to make another game of the Norse saga but with a completely different main character because reasons.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Easy_Entertainer6932 Jun 02 '26

They're not, the sales show it, they're vastly successful even more than greek saga. It's just that average redditor has to feel he is different than other people so they have to be contrarians, it is what it is.

3

u/Rikora12 Jun 02 '26

Gow 2018 was masterful. Liked Ragnarok but didnt love it as I found atreus sections to be super sluggish in pacing and nowhere near as diverse in regards to combat compared to his pops. Still interested in this, always wanted to see more faye

2

u/suffywuffy Jun 03 '26

Just came from a video and comment section on IG and it was… eye opening. These people share the same 1 brain cell I swear.

The person who set the events of the last 2 games, and subsequently the next trilogy in motion, who fought Thor to a standstill, the wife and mother of the protagonists wakes up in the afterlife of the gods.

This will obviously have massive ramifications for the events of the next main GoW trilogy and the main response I saw to these and other valid points of excitement were “cuck” “low estrogen” “soyboy” “you’re the reason gaming is dying” “L”

Like Jesus, we’re in the afterlife of the gods where we have already seen an Egyptian and Chinese god. The Greek pantheon might be there. Faye might bump into friggin Thor again. The whole Athena/ mask mystery might get expanded on. We could finally learn who blew the horn in GoW ‘18 (it might turn out to be Faye) and all a massive bunch of idiots have to say is “harumph, I don’t get to play as muscular man”

I swear to god these people don’t have an original thought. They are told what to think by people like Asmongold because who would ever take a step back and consider actually playing a game rather than just boycotting it because a streamer who you live vicariously through told you it’s everything wrong with the world atm. Saw the same with the Intergalactic reveal also…

3

u/Blibbobletto Jun 02 '26

Yes and they will be continually given oxygen by and equally big crowd of people botching and moaning about them instead of just ignoring them, thus completing the cycle of parasitic consumer misery

10

u/localsexpot2117 Jun 03 '26

I don't sort by controversial enough. Some odd people out there, it's pretty entertaining.

7

u/BigJCote Jun 03 '26

Just watched the same idiot make the same comment three times in a row cause he's so desperate for validation that this isn't a god of war game, cause he can't handle the fact that kratos isn't the main character in this one. He still hasn't grasped the fact that "set in universe = franchise title" Highly entertaining

2

u/rohtvak Jun 03 '26

You can’t really argue against that point; Kratos is most certainly the defining feature of the series in every way.

u/KaijinSurohm Jun 02 '26

I'll always find it hilarious watching the strawman arguments happening here.

"I didn't really enjoy the tease for X reason"
Typical responses: "YOU JUST HATE WOMEN".

Can we have a civil discussion about pros and cons without alaways leading to some asinine extreme already?
The toxic positivity of "You can never criticize" is genuinley exhuasting, and doesn't forefully create the "positive environment" some may hope for.
It does quite the opposite.

33

u/Public_Sprinkles_229 Jun 02 '26

You’re creating a strawman argument about other people creating strawman arguments. Meta

15

u/RodThrashcok Jun 03 '26

I would agree but it is a little odd that almost every single time a woman or a black person is the lead people come out and scream “woke” or “Eh looks fine I guess”. Basically every time without fail, I can’t think of a recent reveal that featured a woman where people didn’t scream woke or bad devs or sweet baby inc or whatever.

→ More replies (8)

6

u/Alexandar516 Jun 03 '26

Brother you are on the modern internet. Its all rage bait and hate .You can't expect a civil discussion these days.

sorry

2

u/Poop-Sandwich Jun 03 '26

I agree with you but it doesn’t help when our critical voices are actually drowned out by people who are actually being sexists.

Talking about this shit in the current era fucking sucks. Woke or anti woke. I wish they would fuck off

Has anyone seen any accusations of hating women here?

Preach, I have the hardest time engaging with ANY community based around my interests because of this problem. I’m all for debating opinions and what not, but SO MANY people immediately resort to insulting you and your intelligence if you simply have a different opinion. Online discourse is borderline fucking dead

5

u/Alexandar516 Jun 03 '26

Yup its bad alright . For example i enjoyed the last season of The Boys even thou the ending was aight at best, only to go online on reddit and find people absolutely fucking hating on it. Hate has ingulfed most discussions sadly , or maybe that's just my feelings about it.

I'm here for Kratos. I hope everybody who's psyched about it gets a great game though.

7

u/Fynaticx Jun 03 '26

Yeah same here. I’m sad no Kratos here. Might just watch a playthrough of this one. Hopefully not long till we get a proper god of war game.

Agreed. I only care about kratos. However I will be keeping an eye on this. The story intrigues me

Unpopular opinion, but I was not a fan of the two modern God of war games so I’m not exactly holding my breath for this, but I’m really happy for folks who enjoyed themselves which I know was a great deal many of people

1

u/jmizzle2022 Jun 03 '26

Yeah you're not alone, never really got into them. But I can understand why people would be stoked about this. I hope it delivers for those fans

3

u/ichkanns Jun 02 '26

Looks fun. I stopped watching after a bit though, and good thing I did because it seems like it showed way too much. I'd rather discover the game by playing than watching a half hour trailer.

My dumbass immediately thought of the singer and I was wondering if this was some sort of shitpost 🤦‍♀️

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Embarrassed_Use6918 Jun 03 '26

They might pull it off but at a glance I don't really care for the idea. If this somehow allows Laufey to be revived or whatever, I think that kills a lot of purpose behind the first and second game which is experiencing loss and learning to grieve and live with it. It takes away the impact in a story that was made great in her death.

3

u/Thicc_Milky Jun 03 '26

We don't know anything about the game yet aside from what they showed us though. In the gameplay footage the combat looked snappy and honestly impressively fast-paced compared to the previous two entries, and new protag looks good too. However, writing felt cliché, and Frank the cube (while hilarious ngl) looked off in the context. We'll probably know more about him once we play the game, but it felt weird seeing a literal talking jello cube named FRANK deal hits to a Mongolian god of war or whatever he was.

We don't know if it's a hit or miss is all I'm saying.

26

u/xGenocidest Jun 02 '26

Yeaaah, they nailed it with that millennial writing.

14

u/BonkYoutube Jun 02 '26

So true. Im surprised she didnt say "I guess now i can do that"

→ More replies (1)

14

u/TacticalNuker Jun 03 '26

Yup, that is also my biggest gripe with this showcase. I don't care that the lead character is a woman, but I do absolutely hate the fact that the dialogue is so unbearable.

6

u/TheQueefPolice Jun 03 '26

100% agreed. I'd absolutely be interested in this game if the dialogue didnt feel like it was catering to marvel movie watchers who have to have everything said out loud as if they expect their audience to be on their phone anyway. Beautiful game. Combat looks great. Dialogue is off-putting.

2

u/BrilliantBehemoth Jun 04 '26

And the fucking cube....? Im gonna need some serious mythological explanation to not think this was a stupid ass decision. Like did someone at the office find this funny, or are they doing a DND reference? Idk.

I saw that shit in the trailer and I immediately thought it was like a placeholder or a missing asset for the actual game

4

u/Accomplished-Cat2849 Jun 03 '26

Wasn’t a huge fan of the Norse God of War games and except for the combat, which does look awesome, this sadly looks like more of what I didn’t like about those

I guess I’ll keep waiting for the trilogy remakes

4

u/SuperArppis Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

I'm sure they will do those remakes in this style as well tho...

5

u/Fizziest_milk Jun 02 '26

I honestly can’t see them doing that, I doubt they’re going to stray too far from the original’s direction

4

u/SuperArppis Jun 02 '26

You mean they will have the same camera mode and controls?

It's a remake, so I'd say that they will do it over the shoulder and add those traversal sections in between fights.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/SnooLentils6995 Jun 02 '26

Thats what I keep saying, they're going to rewrite him to be a lot more sympathetic/regretful i feel.

2

u/Easy_Entertainer6932 Jun 02 '26

100% not gonna happen. The remakes will have the combat style of new games but they will not rewrite Kratos i can bet my left arm on it.

5

u/winterman666 Jun 02 '26

They likely will

2

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock Jun 02 '26

Christ I hope not. The new games are awesome but the combat changing from super fast hack 'n slash to the slower and more calculated style did a fantastic job of reflecting Kratos growing older and more patient.

Santa Monica has had misses and I have no idea what made them give her of all character her own spinoff. I've been waiting for Deimos to come back. Maybe they could explain something about his mark, or whatever Morpheus was planning on Chains of Olympus. Or they could give Atreus a spinoff and where he and Angrboda explore Jottunheim. Or a game about Tyr, an actual God of War. He had a ton of mysteries that God of War Ragnarok never explained.

Im excited to stare at hair physics, it actually looks so incredible i cant wait to play.

Sad everyones complaining about faye replacing Kratos (which she isnt this clearly a spin off game)

2

Thanks to the singer millions of people know now how to pronounce the name.

2

u/Lemenus Jun 04 '26

Worst you can do - is to remove God of War, from a God of War. It's like Max Payne without Max Payne, or Call of Duty without guns, or cheese pizza without cheese.

They could've call it differently and it could've work, but no - they can't do anything on their own, only destroy what other people built.

Probably the least interesting character in the entire series. Really surprised and disappointed that they went with her

At first i was like “ehhh” but this actually sounds kinda dope

5

u/Tracymcgrady1001 Jun 03 '26

God of war isn't god of war unless You're playing as kratos. I dont want to play as the giant wife or the annoying kid.

KRATOS BOY ITS ALWAYS KRATOS....

BOYYYY

"God of War" game

Looks inside

Not Kratos as protagonist

Why is it called God of War then ?

Why not call it Laufey or Laufey: A God of War Story ?

Besides that, "Santa Monica never misses" ? How the hell do you know ? The game ain't out.

u/Seth_KT_Bones2005 Jun 04 '26

Laufey: A God of War Story sounds cool.

Because the series is called god of war and it’s a spin off? What else would it be called? The miles morales game was still Spider-Man and you weren’t Peter Parker…

Almost every assassins creed game is a different character in a different time period but they’re all still assassins creed games. 🤷🏻‍♂️

5

u/Token993 Jun 03 '26

Miles Morales is Spider-Man though, Laufey isn't the God of War

2

u/thundercraker09 Jun 03 '26

Its not spin off....this is mainline game. Stop spreading lies on internet

I’m not one of those “every game is woke” types of people, but this is forced as hell. Genuinely who was asking for a God of War game where you play as anyone but Kratos?

A God of War game without The God of War is like a Forza game without cars.

I disliked the north duology , so i hope this one is better.
My only concern is Faye , who don't have great dialogues so far , but hope it will be better with time , anyways she looked cool at the end

u/PMC-I3181OS387l5 Jun 02 '26

She... kinda just woke up in a place that isn't Valhalla ^^;

She's a bit... speechless about it.

2

u/Kazma1431 Jun 03 '26

For starters why would she be in Valhalla??????

u/Super_Importance6285 Jun 02 '26

yeah but no
the "A armor? that a good idea" sounds so terrible
Or the " Touch me and you are dead " while being helpless ( at least in the moment) feel so cliché
But as i said , maybe that just a bad first impression , i currently play ff16 and the dialogues get way better after the prologue (currently mid game )

4

u/Le_Nabs Jun 02 '26

The Clive and Cid banter in FF16 is some s-tier character writing, each of their moments together is so well done

2

u/Super_Importance6285 Jun 02 '26

For real , their relation is why i push futher in FF16, I just see him die , hard to watch ngl

2

u/KaijinSurohm Jun 02 '26

The fact that you're getting downvoted for having respectful opinions is quite telling with the community in a whole, sadly.

I personally was not a fan of the combat itself.
The lockon system gives Faye an artifical lock in. It's like her body, while doing jumps and spins, is only allowed to go up or down, not left or right, otherwise your character gets displaced with the lockon and it just makes the fighting feel... forced, or a bit floaty.

Faye was always portrayed as some legendary figure, veiled in mystery. It always felt like the Norse duology never wanted to lift the veil, so creating an entire game about her now feels a tad odd.

2

u/esquire_the_ego Jun 03 '26

Lmao not even surprised by the astroturfing for the game, this is 2018 all over again in terms of how a new idea is introduced for the franchise. Hopefully SM knows what they’re doing though.

2

u/justjoshinaround Jun 03 '26

release it on Steam and you'll get triple the sales. i ain't buyin a ps5 for this

It was a miss for me, but I was already bored with God of War Ragnarök, so it stayed a “nope” for me instead of flipping back to a “yep.”

2

u/Bearloom Jun 02 '26

I guess it could be good - and I do enjoy Deborah Ann Woll - but Laufey was such a non-entity in the story so far that it seems like a weird decision to give her a spinoff.

3

u/J0RR3L Jun 02 '26

This is an insane take. Am I just misinderstanding what you mean by "non-entity?" she was pretty damn important to the first game and still very relevant in the second

Being in attendance at the initial 2016 reveal will forever be one of the greatest moments in my gaming life.

1

u/ResidentConcentrate7 Jun 02 '26

I wasn’t even born in the 90s and that hurts

1

u/thatguy01220 Jun 03 '26

I actually haven’t tried Ragnarok but this might be what gets me to try it, mainly because I really like the actress from Daredevil so it’s cool she’s in a video game.

1

u/ToughAd4039 Jun 03 '26

Mom of boy 🔥🔥🔥

1

u/Shinobi_Dimsum Jun 03 '26

It looked fine except the flying-into-fight animations. Wonky looking af.

1

u/Dicecreamvan Jun 03 '26

God of war and the Faye of Valhalla

1

u/Traditional_Name7881 Jun 03 '26

No issue with the female lead, the moving away from Kratos or whatever else. The talking fucking cube is absurd.

1

u/ED-W111N Jun 03 '26

I really like how you can see how they’re going to do the OG Greek Remake from this with all the Double Jump, air combos and etc.

Even Faye’s whip on her sword has a similar animation to the Blades of Chaos

1

u/kolt437 Jun 03 '26

ITS BEEN 10 YEARS???

1

u/Inside_End3641 Jun 03 '26

I've played only the 2018 and it was a fantastic game..

1

u/Ok_Combination_294 Jun 03 '26

You wanted to say Always misses?

1

u/DependentHusky Jun 03 '26

The cube really ruined it for me. Feels like I'm watching a disney movie with those dialogues🗿

1

u/GraveeNito Jun 03 '26

for awhile i thought the trailer was going to be heavenly sword 2 lol

1

u/Signal-Tangerine1597 Jun 03 '26
