Oh the urge to touch the metal thingy

u/n4ke 17h ago

About 20 years ago, my cousin had an RC car with a cheap ass plug that lost both prongs in the socket the first time he unplugged it. He was so scared that he broke something that he instantly tried to pull them both out. He went flying.

819

u/aaronhowser1 PURPLE 17h ago

Fun fact! The reason electricity sends people flying is that it's actually triggering their legs to extend at maximum strength, beyond normal subconscious limits. Completely bypassing the regular motor functions from the brain, it's just sending a message saying ACTIVATE AS HARD AS YOU CAN to whatever it happens to pass through

459

u/n4ke 17h ago

Correct. In fact, activating muscles that push you away violently is the decidedly better outcome. The alternative is clamping down hard and being unable to let go.

58

u/DSD-CYRO 11h ago edited 10h ago

Been there, done that. Grabbed a broken extension cord outdoors at my grandparents place with my left hand when I was like 6 years old. The electricity (230v) made the muscles in my hand and arm clamp down hard as you mentioned. Was completely unable to let go, dad had to drop the electric hedge trimmer and pull it out of my hand, but I held that sucker for a good 10 seconds. Thank fuck I wore rain boots that day, else I would've won the Darwin award. Got a cool burn scar on my ring finger though.

Edit: typo.

Why does this feel like a bot thread lmao wtf

You're right, let me try that again. I should restructure the load bearing parts of my comments to prevent them coming apart at the seams.

My experience getting shocked as a kid was interesting. It was a malfunctioning light switch that did it, not a socket, but it felt more like I was just frozen in place for a moment while vibrating—especially my hand, obviously. I guess everything sorta seized up for a bit.

I seemed fine afterwards, and honestly kinda wanted to do it again.

2

u/LeTurboDick 12h ago

Yeah when i was a kid had a short shock because the outlet extender had a missing bottom and i knew to avoid it because its dangerous but touched it once accidentally and felt frozen in place for a second or two but managed to pull my finger away. Was too embarrassed to tell my dad lol.

Reminds me of when I damaged my parents electric fire and tried to pull out a loose wire. I was SHOCKED to discover it was a live wire.

33

u/CarefulNow_ 14h ago

That action is why if you really really really need to check if something has a current you put the back of your hand to the object.

  1. Your fingers will form a fist away from the current
  2. Your Bicep and Tricep will activate but your Bicep will pull your arm away from the current
  3. Your fist might hit you in the face to tell you to never do this again

7

u/cream-of-cow 17h ago

I was in a hotel in Hong Kong (220 volt) when I saw a plastic plate covering the electric outlet, I didn't realize it was the backside of a broken plug. The jolt shot up my arm and dissipated around my elbow, it sounded like the movies, wabba-wabba-wabba

18

u/b00c 16h ago

right!!! you just must be veeery quick. it won't hurt. or maybe it will and you lose control of your knees and anus, going down like a shit-stained ragdoll.

21

u/agowa338 17h ago

Depending on in which one it is in (assuming it is wired correctly) you may actually be able to. However I wouldn't risk it...

Also take a plastic bag over your hand and pull that thing back out...

46

u/Perfect-Mongoose-704 17h ago

Pfft. It's at work. Report it and let someone fix it

5

u/Perfect-Mongoose-704 17h ago edited 17h ago

Sounds like a work problem. Guess the OP will just have to keep putting tickets in. If they're in the US, OSHA tip off

Ed1: Oops, wrong shape for the plug. Which country uses those...

Ed2: hmmm, it's a type J or N I think...so not many countries. Either way, not the OPs problem to fix

8

u/0thedarkflame0 15h ago

Yeah as far as I can tell, it's a type J... So Switzerland or Lichtenstein.

In theory, this should ne the Neutral pin on a Swiss Plug. But it really depends if it was wired correctly. Swiss electricians are generally quite good with this though (I have yet to find a plug that was not wired up correctly), but I would still not touch it in situ.

When I was like 8 I plugged a thing through an adapter, and when I took it out the outer shell of the adapter stripped off leaving only the contact points

I instinctively grabbed on it with one hand to pull it out since it didn't register in the moment that this is essentially putting my hand in the socket

Good thing I only tried grabbing it with one hand

When I was a small person, about 12, I had a penny, and a plug nearby. I killed the plug out 1/8", and dropped the penny.

Blew out power for the wing of the school. Pulled out the plug, removed the penny, and never spoke of it again. The 3 people on my row watched, nobody else ever knew.

There was a class taking a test on computers 3 rooms away (I didn't know), but found out later.

You can touch just the one. You DON'T want to touch both at the same time, you become the thing that closes the circuit and all the electricity flows through you.

For y’all recommending OP get pliers to pull the thing out. Are y’all missing the word “work” in the title? Let office admin know and move on.

They’ll get an electrician to prevent the 1% chance OP messes up and dies. It might not be because they’re super worried about OP’s safety, but because a corpse in the workplace means more paperwork and having to train their replacement.

And sure, I bet they like OP a bit and would rather not have them die. But that’s secondary in the decision tree.

14

u/Bikkusu 10h ago

Office admin is just going to call Gary

8

u/alexiusmx 9h ago

Good thing Gary is a carpenter, electrician, gardener, and janitor. I don’t think office admin calls him, Gary just spawns into action.

Nobody has ever seen him sitting idle waiting for the next office fix.

Meh just pull it out, whats the worst that can happen... it only has electricity once it completed a full circuit :)

*for legal reasons, this is humor

169

u/Kasaeru 17h ago

You're completely right, aside from high voltage black magic. Electricity does need a complete circuit for current to flow. You can even grab onto a power line so long as no part of your body forms a path to ground.

77

u/blaghed 17h ago

There we go, then. Totally safe to put your tongue there, OP. Just be sure to float.

7

u/feoranis26 12h ago

Not necessarily true with AC, everything always has some stray capacitance to ground and some current will flow. Even if you are floating, if you touch that pin wou will feel some tingling.

Ofc it’s been a week and nothings changed so I hope it’s not a problem and that my shift lead actually remembered to do somthing about it/tell management

2

3

u/welshdude1983 15h ago edited 14h ago

The plastic bit on the bottom of the pins are there to stop your fingers accidentally touching the pins while pulling the plug out. Ive had a cheap charger pin come out of the plastic bit once. If its built to actual safety standards it is the superior plug

Edit. To the person who deleted your reply. They found that a childs smaller fingers could touch the metal before they were fully clear of the contacts in the socket. Hence the half plastic cover at the base of the pin

Is that an extension cord?

Unplug it and then get something like pliers to pull it out

48

u/pm_me_meta_memes 17h ago

That’s gotta be a fake Apple charger

13

u/suentendo 16h ago

Yep. Apple's chargers are overpriced but they don't cheap out on safety (also because Apple would be extremely liable). The fake ones are cheaply made, don't have the same electronics design and components inside, sometimes even have ballasts to add weight etc.

5

u/busytransitgworl PURPLE 14h ago

Had a faulty MacBook charger (back in 2009), my Mac was out of warranty, I still called them and explained the issue. It was absolutely hassle-free with them and they took this matter seriously.

And I believe there was also an iPhone charger back in the 2010s that was a fire risk(?), there was a big recall programme, they replaced the charger without any issues.

3

u/SilverSafri 10h ago

Yep, they’re good with replacing faulty stuff. Battery in my out of warranty almost 4 year old watch turned into a spicy pillow so much that it pushed the screen out, I went in to ask about replacement cost (trying to figure out if I wanted to pay for replacement or buy a new watch). I got entire watch replaced with a new one for free, cause they said the battery was faulty and it’s on them even out of warranty (probably helped that apparently it was a known issue for some units of that particular model).

2

u/Davenator_98 14h ago

Can't you just get a regular charger which isn't shitty and just plug in a USB to lightning cable?

4

u/DuckShapedGoose 17h ago

Unplug it or turn off the entire circuit in the breaker box then pull it out with pliers.
If it has a switch, that may not be enough to turn it off. Cheap power strips only switch one of the two wires going in and then it's basically a 50:50 gamble whether that's live or neutral.

I had the same issue with the "protective pin" the only plastic one for 3 pin uk type of plug. It stuck clean in the wall plug and has been there since. I still haven't figured a way to get it out.

Anyone one clever here with a good idea ?

2

u/TwinSong 16h ago

50% chance nothing will happen when you touch it. 100% chance if you're in the EU and all your sockets are up to code and have been checked by yourself with a socket checker. (Because brown, live, is on the right)

9

u/NightmareWokeUp 14h ago

This is switzerland but the logic is the same, it SHOULD be neutral, but effectively treat it like its live.

9

u/Ybalrid 12h ago

They are obviously in Switzerland, which while not being in the EU, has pretty safe infrastructure.

In this case this prong is in the Neutral side of the plug.

2

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo 12h ago

Thank you! Now apparently everyone else thinks I'm insane, guess I'm not alone.

5

u/Ybalrid 11h ago

The fact that this is in an office and looks modern enough is reasuring on the idea that this is probably the neutral side.

However since this is at work, there's insurance reasons for OP to not touch anything and just go report the issue to whoever manages the building itself. Even if you are confidently sure that this side is neutral.

Could you insulate a pliers and pull it out?

10

u/Redstone_Army 17h ago

Technically yes, but theres still a pretty small risk of death left, hence you don't recommend it to randoms

Some pliers are even rated for something like this, but because the risk is not something like losing 50 bucks or destroying the pliers, but death is why the standart method is to not go that route at all.

Turning off the breaker (and making sure its the right one) and then using pliers (insulated one in best case) would we what you generally recommend online.

For me for example, i know in our sockets live is the right one and we got quality pliers here, so id just take the pliers and get it out.

If you recommend that to someone, moral responsibility kinda shifts to you so just dont

Do yourself a favour and get an Anker or Ugreen charger

So glad for the uk plug. Never ever going to have that problem

50% chance you can pull this out without getting a shock.

I would try to stick the fake charger in again en pull it out with an angle. Or disconnect the wire from the chargepoint en pull it out with pliers.

Just plug it back in! It’s everybody’s charger now!

I once walked into a meeting room in an expensively finished office and found similar.

Except it was a UK plug where the back has pulled off revealing both live and neutral. And it was in a cable box in the middle of a desk, exactly where people might blindly reach in...

Still took weeks to get maintenance to fix it!

This seems like a table plug. So there must be some connection behind this that you can remove.

Use isolated pliers to get it out.

We have to power cycle half the LAB to remove one of these "by the book" way. It caused a little bit of chaos.

Then, our rejected order for insulated pliers, screwdrivers, etc... was "somehow" immediately re-approved.

Should have used a type G plug

I had this happen once and didn’t realise, so I went to plug out the charger and grabbed both metal rods still stuck inside, it felt like touching those electric fences they use on farms.

  1. Use pliers with an insulated handle
  2. Don't use dodgy chargers

Now it's working overtime

Should be able to get it out if you bite at it.

Well that's not at all dangerous, it needs to be removed, turn socket off, if you can't then insulated pliers and be careful.

well time to cut power and remove it ig

If you're insulated you can literally just pull it out with your fingers, but better be safe and use nose pliers.
