NEWS Its over, BioWare is officially closing and stopping development on the next mass effect.
I didn't expect to see this today. Truly a sad day.
•
•
u/missjenh 7h ago
I feel sad for the staff losing their jobs, but can’t say I’m surprised after the sale of EA.
Suppose they could sell the IP and another company could take a crack at Mass Effect but I’m also not holding my breath since EA historically hasn’t sold IPs.
•
u/Telos1807 7h ago
You see I'd say they could give it to another studio and make a straight third person shooter out of it, but do EA even still make those anymore?
Sans Battlefield, they don't make interesting games anymore. The Dead Space remake was meant to be great but it didn't do their numbers and they've canned that series again.
Provided there's not rights fuckery given the Amazon show that's in development, I reckon there's a good chance they sell it. They don't want it anymore but others will. I'm not sure myself if I'd want it, part of me would like to leave the trilogy as it is now.
•
u/PMYourTinyTitties 7h ago
Fuck. This sucks, but I can’t say I’m surprised. “Early development” on a game announced 8 years ago, that’s a pretty sure sign of things going catastrophically wrong.
And does this mean the KOTOR remake is gone? I hope not
•
u/PepperBeef2Spicy 7h ago
Kotor remake will still go through (eventually) bc it was never Bioware who were developing it
→ More replies (3)•
u/One-Preparation-5320 7h ago
Nah, even that studio, whoever it is, has been stuck in limbo for forever
•
u/ImperialCommando 7h ago
That's not true. It moved to Saber Interactive who are currently pushing out other titles. KotOR is in their backlog and they've confirmed it's still alive and well like three times now.
It'll be a while before we see it though, for sure.
•
u/One-Preparation-5320 6h ago
How many times has it changed studios now?
•
u/ImperialCommando 5h ago
Twice. Saber is the second holder. Aspyr had it before but apparently something caused it to move hands
•
•
•
u/MapleSurpy 6h ago
LucasFilm chose NOT to give the game to Bioware probably for this very reason, because they knew it would never come out.
•
u/One-Preparation-5320 7h ago
Dude the KOTOR remake has been dead for years and years. They started doing that all the way back in like 2012 and could never get it done
•
u/RoastRage 7h ago
That was a project by a different studio. The current KOTOR remake is still going strong after a year or so of trouble back in 2022

I'm pretty sure they didn't sell Bioware to EA; EA bought the parent company of Bioware for around 800 million. Making video games is expensive and money doesn't grow on trees. Smaller companies need funding from bigger companies to keep everyone employed.
•
u/Low_Grand6340 7h ago
I don’t even know what to say DA and mass effect are two of my favorite rpg series
•
•

I'm commander shepherd, and this is my least favourite post on the citadel. That being said, I finished the trilogy for the first time properly a couple weeks ago and loved it so much and I'm so disappointed but not surprised to hear this.

Is this an old comic that was a premonition? Or did somebody make this after the fact.
•
u/Greenman8907 7h ago
Came out like the same week as EA’s acquisition of them. Wasn’t a matter of ‘if’, but ‘when’.
•
•
u/thorsday121 7h ago
This comic was made so long ago, but even then, I knew that one day I'd see it posted in response to the actual news.
•
u/ArtistAfraid 7h ago
Genuinely fuck off, the takeover from EA could not have been worse for BioWare. Pushed them to finish stuff faster, made them chase trends just to eventually kill it off as it didn’t let them do what made them buy them in the first place. Fuck EA
•
u/alexagente 7h ago
If you're talking about Anthem it really was more BioWare's fault. Read up on its development. It was led by devs high on their own supply thinking that no matter how disorganized and without direction the process was that it would all come together with "BioWare Magic". They constantly were reinventing the game from the ground up and didn't even finalize flying in it until 7 years later where they had to hire an outside CEO to get it to the finish line. They ignored concerns from their subsidiary dev team who had actual experience making online based multi-player games cause they weren't the "main" team. It was an utter shit show.
Don't get me wrong EA sucks a lot but they actually gave BioWare leeway at first and only started getting more directly involved after their disastrous handling of things.
→ More replies (1)•
u/ClumsyTheSmurf 7h ago
I’ll never forgive them for what happened to anthem. Could’ve been such a good game if it actually had content.
•
u/blue_line-1987 7h ago
Corpo suits ruining things they dont have any clue about? Im shocked, shocked! No wait..... not that shocked.
•
u/DaughterOfBhaal 7h ago
Let's not act like Bioware is blameless. All their games post Mass Effect 3 have been flops. It's not just "big corp bad", if Bioware stopped smoking their own farts and produced games that weren't broken messes and didn't have the most atrocious, forced progressive writing imaginable they'd still be EA's golden child.
Instead, Respawn has surpassed Bioware.

u/Aggressive-Pay9533 7h ago
To be fair, dragon age inquisition did really well. But yeah, your point still stands
•
u/PepperBeef2Spicy 7h ago
I feel like Inquisition was their last “hit” but it was a softer hit. The game was controversial in its gameplay and tone changes and even though it won GOTY it was an uncrowded year iirc. It did sell very well though iirc. But Bioware hasnt had a near unanimous hit since ME2 imo (DA origins, KOTOR, Mass Effect 1 and 2 in this IMO)
•
→ More replies (1)•
u/DaEccentric 5h ago
You're confusing controvorsey with success.
ME2 was their last well-received game, but DAI was a success in any conceivable metric.
•
u/NihilVacant 5h ago
You can like Inquisition or not, but Inquisition was a financial success; it made the most money of all the games in the DA series. Also, it attracted a lot of new players, and yes, it was generally well received. Which is even worse that they made Veilguard after such success.
•
u/Bluejay929 2h ago
Inquisition was what got me into the franchise. I was 14 and had the time to clear every area as I encountered them and play through multiple times. I loved that game. Then I waited a decade for Veilguard and it just…did not have the sauce.
I’m not surprised by this, but dammit I’m still pretty sad. I think they were fully capable of turning themselves around with the right leadership. Someone who can manage a project and deliver on time could use full advantage of BioWare’s legacy to get them back on track.
•
u/DaughterOfBhaal 7h ago
I forget that Inquisition came out after ME 3.
But still, Inquisition often gets regarded as the first signs of decline
•
u/thorsday121 7h ago
The failures of Anthem, their biggest disappointment, were all Bioware's fault tbh. The studio itself was certainly not blameless in the decline.

BioWare delivered nothing but slop since Inquisition.
Not really a surprise they finally got shut down.
•
u/tittysprinkles112 7h ago
I liked Inquisition, but you have to forgive the stripped strategy elements.
•
u/micheal213 6h ago
That’s actually my bad. I should have said inquisition. I absolutely loved that game.
•
u/avidnarutofan 7h ago
I actually preferred the gameplay style of inquisition over DAO and 2. I've never been much for strategy.
•
u/SirWilliamM32 7h ago
The worst news to receive on my birthday.
It's sad, but I'm honestly surprised they survived so long.
Hopefully they'll at least release or leak what they've developed for ME5. But that's probably impossible.

I’ve been out of middle school for more than 20 years, and EA is still doing this to creators from my childhood.

•
u/TheTeslaMaster 5h ago
I remember one of the early EA fatalities being Westwood, the studio behind the Command & Conquer series...
•
u/-The-Bloody-Nine 5h ago
I don't like EA but in this case, BioWare was given a lot of chances and just failed to produce a good game across multiple IPs. I think this was really on them. After the Casey Hudson-era team started leaving, it just wasn't the same company.
•
•
u/rukh999 6h ago
They gave Bioware more than enough chances.
•
u/ThePissedOffGrinch 6h ago
Agreed. Many think EA was the route of all the delays but during ME4 Development Bioware even came out and said they had their team shifted into other games essentially delaying ME4. I cannot stand EA but end of the Day Bioware had many issues on their own without EA intervention.
•
u/HaHaWhatAStory014 5h ago
they had their team shifted into other games
I don't know remember who it was, but Anthem was basically some Bioware higher up's "baby," pet project, obsession, whatever. Somebody with some clout there was convinced it was "the next big thing" and really leveraged and strong-armed everybody there into that. Some Sony exec basically made the exact same mistake with Concord...

Yeah, we have seen fuck all about the next mass effect, the same shit happened with andromeda and dragon age.
Both were mediocre
•
u/babasilikum 6h ago
EA is the reason Bioware had so much trouble. All started with EA buying bioware and meddling with the development process
•
u/rukh999 6h ago
Lets be real, Bioware hasn't been Bioware for a decade or more and EA waited this long. It wasn't going to happen.
•
u/babasilikum 6h ago
Its not my point to just deflect 100% of the blame on EA, but they did kept interfering with active development since they took over. If your new boss keeps pushing for no reason and also keeps changing the goal, its gonna be difficult to maintain quality. Bioware lost a lot of quality staff over the years, so it only worsened the situation.
Topic has been discussed to death, so its no use anyways. I just think that Bioware would have been better if EA didnt keep changing the objective.
→ More replies (1)•
u/BlinkReanimated 5h ago
If your new boss keeps pushing for no reason
It wasn't for "no reason", EA wanted Bioware to turn out more and more profits. They forced Bioware to cut corners to save on salaries, release games before they were finished to bring in more revenue, and most importantly, they pressured Bioware to lose their in-house writers, namely Drew Karpyshyn.
It was the loss of Karpyshyn that saw them rewrite core elements of ME3 which led to the infamously lame red/blue/green ending.
Pretty sure it was also EA that pressured the Dragon Age team to drop the CRPG elements and just become an action game. Given the successes of Larian and Owlcat, I think it's fair to say that a proper CRPG Dragon Age 2 could have actually been really successful.
You're 100% right, EA is responsible for Bioware failing, just wanted to clarify why. Money. Profit.
•
•
u/ZephkielAU 2h ago
Yeah I personally think the loss of Drew Karpyshyn was what tanked Bioware. The good news is he's now at Archetype Entertainment with other original Bioware devs with Exodus due to come out next year.

u/Chazmina 7h ago
KOTOR and Mass Effect were the games that inspired me to join the game industry. This is devastating.

•
u/ContentPianist5884 6h ago
You could argue that bioware today is nothing like the og bioware in terms of development and team.
Don’t get me wrong it’s very sad as the job loss will be very high. But in terms of bioware shutting down, we can all agree bioware died years ago informally
•
u/Grapple_Shmack 7h ago

That sucks. I was hoping another game with Andromedas style of combat. And there's so much they can do with the IP not related to Shepard.
Also what does this mean for the TV show?
•
u/WIN_WITH_VOLUME Alliance 6h ago
Probably doesn’t change the show. The rights are still valid, even if the studio can produce games. This may even open up someone else to buy the rights to produce games eventually (don’t get your hopes up though).

•
•
u/TychusBrahe 7h ago
Not surprising but still sad.
Didn't have much hope for Mass Effect but I would've liked to see it get a proper swan song. With the competition of Exodus and The Expanse it was going to have trouble standing out to anyone except old fans I suppose.
I hope EA doesn't sit on the IPs of Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Realistic best case scenario is them licensing the rights to other studios a la BG3 - not holding my breath though.
•
u/Street-Bar-9494 7h ago
"Bioware magic" was dead a while ago, and with the way they relied on it, we're lucky we even got as many good games as we did.

u/AHorseNamedPhil 7h ago
This sucks and as someone who would still list the Mass Effect trilogy as my favorite games, I'm bummed that we'll never get a Mass Effect 4.
But the sad reality is that Bioware has been a bit of a mess for many years, and hadn't put out a good game in over a decade.
The writing was probably on the wall with that last Dragon Age game.
•
u/RadioMessageFromHQ 7h ago
Yeah, I’m sympathetic to the people who’ve lost their jobs. But “stopping early development” of a game they announced about three and a half Reaper cycles ago. Whatever that was it was never coming out.
•
u/rukh999 6h ago
Its kind of crazy. You look at the wiki and they had a big hit coming out basically every year or from 2000 - 2012 between the mass effect, dragon age, and BG/NWN games. The ME3 team put out 1, 2, 3 with only 3 years between each and they were huge successes. Andromeda was nearly 10 years ago and there's no sign ME4 was even coming out next year. Sure, I'd absolutely love another Mass Effect game with the quality of the first three, but I don't think they were capable of that anymore.
•
u/Tcrumpen 6h ago
That's a real shame i've been a HUGE mass effect fan for ages, heck i pre-ordered ME3

RIP Bioware. The Mass Effect Trilogy is my favorite RPG series of all time by a wide margin. CDPR comes in 2nd with the Witcher Triology, and even EA with the Star Wars Jedi series has done very well. EA and Bioware were never a good corporate marriage, and unfortunately both have suffered. Bioware is gone, and the LBO greed of Saudi PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners will probably do what most LBO's do - benefit the owners, creditors, and corporate managers while short changing their employees and customers in the long run. I'm hoping CDPR can stay independent, and I am looking forward to the next Witcher 3 DLC - Songs of the Past, and the Ciri based Witcher 4.
Thanks for the memories Bioware!

Honestly I’m glad that Mass Effect didn’t get the treatment that Dragon Age ended up getting.
They pioneered a lot of incredible gameplay choices and designs for many games that have followed. Mass Effect was my eye-opener of what characters in a game could really be if the people who made them really cared. Same goes for Dragon Age. I held a hell of a lot of appreciation and respect for this studio for many years, but acting surprised at this point is surprising in itself. When the games keep not doing well due to a studio’s mismanagement and direction of creative decisions, the writing on the wall is not a shocker.

While development of new games may be dead (perhaps only for the time being? 🤔), we will keep the spirit of Mass Effect alive in community with one another, in spaces such as this, and fervently pray that the upcoming TV series arrives on time and isn't unwatchably awful 💔🫡✊

Very sad and disappointing, but not totally unexpected. Their last few games underperformed and given how long ago they originally posted teasers for ME 5, with no new updates, it was just a matter of time.
