•

I just dont get how it was still in early development. It was announced 6 years ago, Veilguard came out 2 years ago....that game should be getting ready to release next year. WTF were they doing this whole time.
•
u/OlieTom 6h ago
Honestly, I feel like this in general across the industry is a problem and a reason for such lackluster returns (though in probably wrong).
It was what, 10 years ago the teaser for Elder Scrolls 6 popped up, and we are still 3+ years away?
Generations are coming and going without these studios producing much of anything.
People dunk on CoD and in the past Assassin's Creed for yearly entries but man, they stayed relevant.
By the time any of my favorites decide to (if even) come out with a new game, I'll be so over gaming from crap games I won't even care.
I'll get off my soapbox now
•
u/HemaMemes 5h ago edited 4h ago
The gaming industry does have a bad habit of announcing a game before any sort of work is even starting.
CDPR announced Cyberpunk two years before they released Witcher 3, but real development didn't even start until after Blood and Wine.

It was what, 10 years ago the teaser for Elder Scrolls 6 popped up, and we are still 3+ years away?
I feel like people constantly forget that the ES6 announcement was literally just Bethesda saying Elder Scrolls as a franchise wasn't dead, because at the time there was lots of rumors around ES being relegated to the MMO going forward.
Bethesda has always been a single game studio, as in they only make one game at a time. The last ten years have been taken up first by trying to fix Fallout 76 and then making StarField.

u/GliceDidYouSayGlice 7h ago
Agreed. I feel like we were dissecting that poster 5 years ago. And....you'd have to imagine they were another 5+ years away from the game. What a joke.

Honestly...probably nothing. Look at what came out when Halo Studios was gutted: they were working on NOTHING. They had a "working idea" for Halo 7 and a few other "early ideas".
Wouldn't surprise me if it comes out that ME5 hadn't even started any meaningful production.
•
•
u/FacetiousTomato 6h ago edited 6h ago
This is exactly why they're closing down. They did the same thing with Anthem, dicking around for years - then got told they had to release something, and Anthem is what we got.

They never should have announced it. Realistically development didn’t start until two years ago, we know from articles about dragon age that the mass effect team came in and worked on it a lot towards the last few years of development.

The best and only hope is that the Amazon TV show isn’t also canned. If it’s a hit like Fallout, maybe EA would sell the IP to someone else to develop a game.
•
u/Hooch331 7h ago
Even if they did, by the time that happens, those who were working on it will have been scattered to the wind.. whoever picked it up would be starting from scratch again, and I doubt we would get the same feel..
I don't want to believe it, or admit it, but im certain this will be the death of my favorite franchise...
Fuck EA Fuck the Saudis
•
u/ElMike420 7h ago
I hope but damn, I didn’t really expected this to really happen, many people were already saying the TV show was not going well (many delays in production, not a clear concept has been presented to us either)
I honestly believed the game would come out and the tv show would be shelved.
Now I don’t know:l

u/tyehyll 7h ago
6 years since the Mass Effect announcement and still in early development. What the fuck are these companies doing???
•
u/EDF1919 N7 7h ago
Nothing, that's why they're being shut. Look at Halo, 6 years and they were still in concept stages.
•
u/tyehyll 7h ago
Yeah the "let em cook" thing gamers used to say between long dev cycles was certainly abused by many studios for years. Yes, put out the best game you can but you eventually have to put a game out, sorry.
•
u/starcell9000 6h ago
"let em cook" is what you say when a reputable developer like Fromsoft is taking a long time on the DLC for elden ring. That does not apply to Bioware, and hasn't for a long time now.
These things require a bit of brain power, which the average person, sadly, does not possess.
→ More replies (2)•
u/Hailfire9 7h ago
Devs need to earn our trust to let them cook. Rockstar has a very large amount of trust-- let them cook. Larian has a good amount of trust -- let them cook, conditionally.
Bioware has been tainted by EA for long enough that "let them cook" was more "hey guys, prove to use you ARE cooking, k?" Turns out they weren't. They were getting drunk in the kitchen talking about food the whole time.
→ More replies (2)•
u/Hailfire9 7h ago
That's probably why Bioware got shuttered, and why I almost don't even care. It feels more like 6 years milking a paycheck than it does 6 years of being a dev studio.
•
u/EDF1919 N7 7h ago
Exactly. Big dev companies have gotten way too comfy sitting on their ass and producing nothing. Bethesda is next unless Todd shows some real progress.
→ More replies (5)•
u/neortje 5h ago
Yeah, I’ve felt Bethesda is in danger for a long time.
It feels incredibly stupid for any company to not capitalize on a major tv show being made. With the release of the fallout tv series a new game would have generated tons of money.
I think a lot of gamers have been critical on Rockstar for milking GTA Online so much, but maybe stuff like that is what has kept them alive for so long between games. It’s a steady stream of income keeping the shareholders happy while they get to come up with the next big thing.
It’s sad what happened to BioWare, but having the game still in early development after such a long time is ridiculous. Wasting so much time without producing anything substantial is a one way ticket to being closed.

•
u/Main-Cheesecake3287 7h ago
Idk why they wouldn’t have just sold off BioWare and its IP. Msft straight up released studios and their IP when they were money pits.
•
u/AsgeirVanirson 7h ago
They might very well still sell it.
Cancelling the game and closing the studio makes it easier to sell the IP.
As it stands anyone interested in making a game that might make good use of the Mass Effect IP now looks at a product with no expectations attached and no company/staff attached.
This way they can also 'put it on the market' without it continuing to cost them money, and anyone who might want to make a Mass Effect game can start completely fresh. By being 'dead' IP it's also going to be cheaper.
•
u/CaleanKnight 5h ago
And who would buy that?
BioWare was done... they haven't done anything remotely acceptable in more than a decade, more likely is that they saw that BW hasn't done shit for ME, tried to shop it around with nobody biting and this is the last step.

EA is a cancer to the gaming industry and has been. Here is a list of the franchises they ran into the ground (either killed or worsened):
Command and Conquer
Ultima
Dead Space
Medal of Honor
Need for Speed
Titanfall
Skate
Star Wars Battlefront
Burnout
Sim City
Battlefield
Dragon Age
And now let's add Mass Effect to the list
There is no gaming company I hate or resent more than EA

u/NewFaded 5h ago
They don't care because the same people keep dumping thousands into ultimate team every year and stuff. I used to play sports games back before that stuff ruined them and they stopped iterating on other modes. Now you look at something like NBA 25 getting shut down two years after it released, bricking single player.
They do not care about anything but high revenue return for low output, and people eat it up. They sell a 70 dollar roster update and some buzzwords and some digital trading cards that you can use one game and rebuy the next.

Been seeing comments on posts about this on normal gaming subs saying “rest in piss” and the like. Feels like total revisionism as if BW didn’t make some of the best single player games of all time. Sucks to see them go out like this and never get an ME5.
•
•
u/HUNAcean 5h ago
Too long ago, sadly. A good portion of people active in gaming subs today are simply too young to have play much of the catalouge before Inqusition.

Let's be real, games like Mass Effect, these days, take talent, time & money.
While I don't doubt of the talent @ Bioware, I doubt EA would have given them the time and money to make a Mass Effect worthy of the name.
A new Mass Effect would be awesome, but it needs the proper working environment. And EA wasn't that.
•
u/matthieuC 5h ago
> While I don't doubt of the talent @ Bioware, I doubt EA would have given them the time and money to make a Mass Effect worthy of the name.
They haven't made a successful game in 12 years and ME5 was still in pre production 7 years after the announcement.
I won't deny that EA fucked them repeatedly and that's the consequences of their actions.
But there was no point keeping the husk going any longer. They were given more chances that any studio and they apparently had not got their shit together.→ More replies (1)•

While I don't doubt of the talent @ Bioware
After Inquisition, Andromeda, Anthem, and Veilguard, I have doubts about BioWare’s talent. Even earlier as seen with Dragon Age 2 and certain parts of Mass Effect 3 it was already becoming apparent that BioWare was getting out of shape. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is very mediocre remaster too that is mostly worth to play only because of mods.

It seems like Bioware got more of a chance than most floundering EA studios, but there's only so long you can tread water. I'm guessing the new ownership decided it wasn't worth keeping them around, and didn't believe the new Mass Effect would actually turn things around for them.

Beyond all the other reasons they had to axe this, EA was recently acquired by a Saudi private equity firm. Their sole purpose is buying stuff, trimming “fat” and doing other shitty stuff to boost profits.
This was inevitable since that sale. Expect more shit like this happening to studios connected to EA. Another BioWare game was far from an easy cash grab so it got cut, and anything not fitting the bill of “easy money” will also be scrapped to make sure EA will be performing better than it did before they acquired it, so that it can be resold for a profit.

Look, we all knew this was coming. It's sad, but not unexpected.
And look, we really don't need a Mass Effect 4. This is coming from someone who has obsessively played it throughout my life, named my dog Shepard (also my username), etc.
I was terrified it would get the treatment so many of these franchises get when the suits in charge decide they want to make more money. I fully believe whatever they did would have most likely tarnished the legacy of the trilogy. It might have added or changed some really dumb stuff, and made everything even worse.
Would I love to return to that universe for new adventures with the characters I love? Sure. But I think we'd all just be chasing something unobtainable from a time that no longer exists. It's like trying to capture lightning in a bottle. The fact is, we have a complete trilogy, and it's ok to appreciate the closure that provides.
Let the masterpiece rest with dignity, you know?
•
u/doc_nano 7h ago edited 6h ago
Yep. As they say: don't be sad it's ending -- be glad that it happened.
Looking at all the colossal blunders made on costly AAA projects, it's a miracle that the ME trilogy came into being at all, and that it's as good as it is. It was truly a lightning-in-a-bottle situation in terms of how everything came together.
I'd have loved spending more time in that universe, but eventually all good things must end.

It hurts, but yeah, I agree with this. The trilogy they made is genuinely amazing. They had a specific story they wanted to tell, and they told it. The trilogy achieved a good amount of what they were after. For me, and maybe this is cope, I feel like it's better to let the series rest as well.

EA holding onto the IP costs them nothing. If they keep the IP, they can license it out or have one of their satellite studios make another Mass Effect later down the road. If they sell the IP, then they miss out on any profit that a future Mass Effect might accrue.
So the "safe" strategy is to just hoard the IP indefinitely.
