Yeah, I’ve felt Bethesda is in danger for a long time.

It feels incredibly stupid for any company to not capitalize on a major tv show being made. With the release of the fallout tv series a new game would have generated tons of money.

I think a lot of gamers have been critical on Rockstar for milking GTA Online so much, but maybe stuff like that is what has kept them alive for so long between games. It’s a steady stream of income keeping the shareholders happy while they get to come up with the next big thing.

It’s sad what happened to BioWare, but having the game still in early development after such a long time is ridiculous. Wasting so much time without producing anything substantial is a one way ticket to being closed.

no Elder Scrolls in 15+ years is malpractice. That's longer than GTA V - VI and obviously that's been a long time (and when Rockstar shows their work, we can see why it took so long; I have no confidence in BGS to do the same). No single player Fallout for 11+ years is malpractice.

Bethesda and Bioware were both pretty important to me once upon a time, but that time hasn't been for a while. Obsidian is mediocre as well. These days it's Owlcat, Larian, Warhorse and CDPR for me (and now add Rebel Wolves to the list).

I feel like ES6 has had to revamp a few times because of the shape of modern gaming, and the relative flop of Starfield. I wouldn't be surprised if they're working somewhat backwards of most games -- build a world first, make the story for it second. They probably had a decent "New Skyrim" build around the time of the Xbox One/Ps4, that had to get expanded for Series X/Ps5, and now with Ps6 on the horizon, needs fleshed back out yet again. Probably a similar issue with Fallout 5. Dev teams are probably struggling with the scope that Rockstar has been leading with, both RDR2 and GTA. If you're trying to live up to your reputation as "expansive, open, immersive world-building" as gospel, getting the bar reset so high every 5 years probably hurts.

They wouldn't have to revamp to keep up with modern gaming if they didn't take 15+ years on development

Modern games seem to take about 6 years to develop, if you're not throwing the whole damn kitchen sink at it. Bethesda and Rockstar specifically aim to push boundaries on their releases (except maybe EsO and 76). Trying to extract every detail possible on the available tech has been their expectations for years, and if they dally long enough that the tech advances, I don't fault them for reaching for that new limit.

But that causes new delays and potentially new bugs that cause further delays and suddenly you're waiting for 15 years.
