My grandma was born and raised in the Bronx. She once told me how when she was a kid learning geography in school, she used to think to herself “why am I learning this? I’m never gonna step foot outside the Bronx.” Ultimately she very much did travel once she got older, but it’s got me wondering. In a city of 9M people, I’m sure there are some folks who basically never actually go outside the city limits.

About a month ago I suddenly started experiencing extreme abdominal pain. I have a high pain tolerance and this had me doubled over on the floor screaming. My partner called 911 for an ambulance because it was hard for me to walk. 15 minutes, nothing. She called again. Another 15 minutes, nothing. Finally we call a third time where they can actually hear me screaming on the phone, and they acted like it was the first they've heard of us.
At that point we had already called an uber to the hospital. I won't go into what it was, just that I'm okay now.
It basically shot any faith I have in the city's emergency response. Was this abnormal, or is this just how it is trying to get an ambulance in the city?

Hello everyone from New York,
I'm writing this post in the hopes some of you may help me with a very specific situation.
I'm currently living in Colombia, but my best friend who is from Ecuador had to leave her country and find political asylum in the US.
I can't share the details specifically, but she has been having a really rough time. She's all by herself living in NYC. She has a job and is working legally and she's the kind of person who makes friends easily, but leaving your own country can make you very lonely and she doesn't have any family over there.
Tomorrow (October 22nd) is the anniversary of her mom's death, and I want to send her something that might cheer her up. She loves treats and baked goods and flowers. But since I don't live in the US, and I don't know any places in NYC I was hoping you could help me and suggest some places. Hopefully some places where I can pay online, and maybe not too expensive, since the value of a dollar is 4 times my national coin.
Any suggestions are super welcome and thank you all!

I'm a firm believer of if you've been out (on the subway, running errands etc. ie not just popping down to the downstairs bodega) you shower before getting into bed. You don't want to carry all the filth/germs/grime from the city into bed. My partner completely disagrees and is ok not showering.
I need the NYC hivemind to answer this.

Anyone hear anything about this? Looks cool but I can’t find any reviews or pictures besides their one video…
I am seeking vintage or retro computing groups or places in NYC. Thanks!

I went to NYC a couple of weekends ago and i don't wanna gas y'all up but there were way too many good looking people. I could immediately tell who was a tourist because we all looked like shit. First of all, y'all skin looks great and I'm 90% sure it's because of the water,
But SECOND of all, everybody's outfit was fly! Even the homeless people! I don't know what any of the brands were (besides the occasional super obvious louis, gucci or guess pieces, i think i saw a comme des garcon shoe once) or what they cost but i noticed all the clothes looked like quality and the pieces of everybody's fit had a cohesive style that went with each other and with the person's personality and body shape and everybody wore their clothes in a way that gave them an interesting silhouette and YOU DON'T SEE THAT EVERY DAY WHERE I'M FROM! I don't even wanna say what state, out of love for my state. I know I've never even been in the stores where some of that shit gets sold!
So my question for AskNYC is where do you guys get clothes? I'm sick of shopping at Kohl's, man, I'm serious 😭

National Grid recently shut off our gas/filed a DoB complaint stating:
"New house piping need licensed master plumber and DoB authorization. Left CV off."
We called a Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) to do an initial inspection and estimate. He explained the three tests the DoB will perform, but now he's insisting on getting physical access to all gas piping throughout the whole house—from the basement all the way to the top floor—to inspect everything before doing any work.
We know where the basement lines are, but tracing the top-floor lines would mean opening up walls/ceilings, which feels like a massive (and expensive) job. Honestly, it feels like he might be upselling his services.
1) Is this standard protocol? Does an LMP actually need visual/physical access to every foot of gas line to prep for a DoB test, or can they just pressure-test the existing system first to see if it even holds pressure?
2) How should we get a second opinion? What should we ask another plumber to avoid getting taken for a ride?
Any advice from NYC homeowners or plumbers who have dealt with National Grid / DoB gas sign-offs would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all,
Posting here because I’m unsure what to do about this. As the title states, my old landlord has yet to return our security deposit after almost 2 months. We lived in the apartment in Brooklyn from Sept 2024 to August 2026, and moved out August 31st. At the time that I’m posting this, it’s October 21st. At face value, I believe we’d be within our right to take him to small claims court at this point, but there are some complicated details that make us unsure how to proceed:
I initially emailed him about a week after we moved out asking about the security deposit, but my email bounced back so I texted him directly. He said that he was locked out of his email AND bank accounts so he couldn’t access either of them at that point in time but that he would be figuring out asap. Of course I highly doubt that this would matter when it comes to the legality of returning the security deposit in time, but just providing some context.
The most complicated part is that he now lives in Poland, as he moved there soon after we started our lease 2 years ago. As I understand it, to take him to small claims court, we'd need his current address which we don't have. His brother was our Super, and currently lives in the building.
On October 1st (3 weeks ago), he said that he’d send a check over to our new address (still in NYC) but we’ve never received it and any subsequent messages and questions from me have gone unanswered.
Some extra details that may help:
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

So as I understand it liquor stores in NY can't sell mixers/anything without alcohol, and while they can sell bitters, in practice they tend to not have many on hand and they can be sold in other places.
Has anyone seen Small Hand Foods orgeat for retail sale in NYC? Prefer Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Inner Queens (though I go out towards Flushing and Forest Hills frequently enough that those are options).
Relatedly, are there any good places in the city with a large selection of bitters aside from Kalustyan's and Amor y Amargo?

Something I've always wondered, ever since the Nets moved to Brooklyn they're the only team in the NYC metro area that claim New Jersey instead of NYC. Because of this they seem to be very overlooked by people in the area as a whole period. I'm curious what their relationship is in terms of how other fans in the metro area treat them.

My building in Bedstuy has been having gas issues for over a year now, with National Grid coming to fix mysterious gas leaks every month or so. Two months ago, the owners had someone come to inspect the gas line connecting our dryer, and they failed to reconnect it properly. When we went to use the dryer it smelled strongly of gas. We immediately called National Grid and they got super serious, said it was a carbon monoxide leak and that someone could have died.
There were a few days between the building management fcking up causing the leak and us catching it, meaning that it had been leaking that whole time. Luckily we keep windows open.
Naturally we lost our shit on building management and requested a month’s rent abatement considering how bad it could have been. Originally they said they wouldn’t give us a cent, but when we mentioned taking potential legal action they offered $1k, but still adamantly denied any responsibility for the incident. We stood our ground on requesting one month, and now they have countered our offer to half a month of rent.
My question is: What are our rights in this situation? Clearly the owners know they’re guilty or they wouldn’t have agreed to any abatement. We didn’t pay rent last month as we were waiting on an agreement from then. Should we just take the half month offer or stand our ground? Or, take the spicy third option of getting a lawyer?

What is the name of that sickeningly sweet perfume that is absolutely by far the most popular unisex perfume in the city currently? It smells almost exactly like the “body butter” from Trader Joe’s called “Cacay Oil Body Butter”. It’s driving me insane. I can smell it on someone (young) in virtually every subway car I ride in.

I accidentally went the wrong way on the N today. When I realized it, I got off the train. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a tunnel to get to the other side so I had to cross the street to get back on the N to go the right way. I hopped the turnstile because I didn’t wanna pay again and a cop saw me and gave me a ticket. I tried to explain to him and show him my MTA purchase on my phone but he didn’t care.
The ticket he gave me was a pink ticket that says “criminal court appearance ticket”.
Is there a way to pay the fine so I don’t have to go to court?
Thanks

I live in a substantially under market rate apartment and know for fact that I pay at least 1.5K less than my neighbors in my building. However, I never received the rent stabilized ledger in my rental documents. I requested my rental history from DHCR which confirms my unit’s rent stabilized status until the last 4 years. Im concerned about my rent being destabilized or worse, it comes to light and I face my land lord’s ire. My rental history is included with all identifying info about me or the building blacked out. Does anyone have any advice on next steps?

Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out to see if anyone has had a negative experience with a towing company called The Collision Lab LLC, located in Long Island City, Queens, or has any resources that could help us.
Last night, my girlfriend and I were involved in a three-vehicle collision on the Long Island Expressway. Before NYPD even arrived at the scene, representatives from The Collision Lab showed up and began approaching us about towing our vehicle.
At the time, my girlfriend and I were both injured, shaken up, and not thinking clearly due to the accident. FDNY instructed us to move our vehicle off the expressway, so we drove it ourselves to a nearby gas station.
The towing company continued approaching us about taking our keys, claiming they would handle our vehicle and store it for free. Neither of us signed any paperwork or knowingly authorized the company to tow our vehicle to its storage facility. Everything happened so quickly that we can barely remember the exact conversations. Somehow, the company obtained our keys and took possession of the vehicle.
Today, when we attempted to retrieve the car, the company demanded $800 for towing and storage, despite never providing us with any written authorization or an itemized invoice. The person we spoke with, who we understand to be the business owner, later threatened to increase the charge to $3,000.
We contacted NYPD, but they told us this was a civil matter because it involved a business.
My girlfriend and I were in a vulnerable state following the accident, and we feel that the company took advantage of the situation. We have already filed complaints with NYC311 and the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
Has anyone experienced something similar with this company or another towing business in NYC? Does anyone know of any legal resources, consumer protection agencies, or organizations that could help us recover our vehicle and dispute these charges?
Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Update: NYPD finally arrived, the owner is now trying to charge $2,000+ for the car.
