Spider-Ham (Spiderverse): During the final sequence of the first movie, Spider-Ham says the famous phrase ''that's all folks'' which is a callback to another famous pig (Porky Pig from Looney Tunes). One of the producers said that they pondered alot about if it was ok or not to use it, but ultimately having no issues having it on the film.

Dawn Greenwood (Marvel): The Silver Surfer and his companion Dawn Greenwood face off against a bizarre villain powered by pure imagination who summons a massive wave of fictional heroes and main characters to attack them. Dawn gets very close to recognizing them before she pulls back. The whole arc is also full of Doctor Who inspirations, said by the writer Dan Slott himself.

Lore That's not a representation or style choice. That's actually how it is.

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Undertale/Deltarune: Usually in these types of games, the combat scenes are just a way to represent the characters facing off, and in-universe whats going down is what you'd expect a fight to be like. In UT/DR though, we get a lot of examples that shows that what we see on screen is more or less exactly what's happening in-universe. For example, sans' ultimate attack against frisk is to not do anything on his turn, preventing the player from being able to take their own turn, and one fight against Rouxls Kaard has him turn all of the player's commands into ACT, temporarily preventing the player from being able to do anything but dance on their turn

Hi-fi rush: Chai, due to having his music player fused into his heart/power source, perceives the world around him as moving to the beat of the background music and is stronger when he moves and attacks on-beat, while enemies also move on-beat. This is commented on multiple times by other characters as well with his allies also being synced to the beat when Chai swaps with them, implying that the world around chai really is reacting to the music being played instead of it only happening to facilitate rhythm-based gameplay.

Madness combat: All of the characters in madness combat have rayman hands that aren't physically connected to their body and just float nearby. Normally, doing this is just style choice, and it's assumed their hands are connected anyway. However, theres a side episode of madness combat called "an experiment", where we see that it's not just a style choice, their hands really aren't connected, because in the video two scientists trap a grunt's hands in a box and pulls them away from his body.

Characters [loved trope] The Tsundere is a genuinely really loving person with a very good reason for acting that way

Thumbnail
gallery
307 Upvotes

A lot of the time i find that Tsundere's (or attempts at them) are far, far too mean or act this way for no real reason beyond fitting the archetype. Nagatoro is a good example of what im talking about, and in other cases a character is wrongly labeled a tsundere (Asuka from evangelion).

Toph Beifong: Avatar the Last Airbender

Toph is, by a country mile, the meanest member of her team. She's stubborn, sarcastic, and in classic tsundere style, can never really spit out her feelings. Despite her constant rude behavior and her inferiority complex, she is consistently loyal and honorable. Notably, unlike the rest of the Gaang, she has the least personal stake in actually ending the war. Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko all have familial ties binding them to the conflict, while Toph's motivation is largely the selfish (in a good way) desire to self actualize and prove herself more than her disability.

Her more difficult behavior is all coming from a place of needing to be taken seriously, and distancing herself from the image of being a vulnerable little doll her parents have of her. she's been coddled her entire life despite her being (at the time) tied for the greatest earthbender in the world. Her most defining moment of moral fiber, at least in my opinion, is during an event in which she and Appa--the groups flying bison and Aang's beloved pet, remain aboveground so that Toph can keep an underground library from collapsing on the group.

During this time, poachers attack the pair with the intent of kidnapping Appa. Toph responds by trying her absolute heart out to fight them off with TWO handicaps. First, shes spending an immense amount of effort protecting the library, and second, she's standing on sand, thus disrupting her Tremorsense abilities and rendering her even more blind than usual. Protecting both is clearly impossible, but she still digs her heels in and fights until it becomes clear that in order to save Appa she'd have to drop the library. She has to let him go, and spends a large chunk of the following episodes trying to atone for something that wasnt even her fault to begin with.

Toph is a fairly static character, but even she gets growth revolving around her learning to both rely on others and view her own internal strength in a heroic light... still picks on Sokka because she likes him though.

As a final tidbit, when describing one of her kid's fathers in the sequel series, Toph only offers him praise--specifically for his kindness, and the other male characters she crushes on she does so largely because they're kind as well. Despite her struggles to act on it herself, she values kindness (so long as its not condescending) incredibly highly.

Natsuki: Doki Doki Literature Club

Natsuki is first introduced as a stereotypical tsundere. She cant spit out anything nice without getting embarrassed, calls people mean names she clearly doesnt mean, and is all around kind of rude to the unnamed player character. Similar to toph, a lot of this comes from a place of being seen as childish and patronized. Her more simplistic style of poetry (i personally think shes the best poet in the group but i digress) and perceivably childish love of manga have left her very insecure. On a much darker note, her father is abusive and regularly starves her, resulting in her being underweight and (its implied) having a delayed puberty as well, so she looks even younger than she is.

Alongside her desire to be taken seriously, Natsuki heavily values authenticity and sincerity in how she and others present themselves... and the PC is lying about his intentions in joining the club--which Natsuki suspects. He's there to hang out with cute girls and possibly find a girlfriend, and any rudeness she shows to him beyond her baseline insecurity is completely justified.

Despite this, Natsuki is the most authentic member of the group, and is actually incredibly reasonable. As Monika (who is insane for plot reasons) gradually drives the other two girls, Sayori and Yuri increasingly insane by cranking up the dial on their worst traits (Sayori's clinical depression and Yuri's obsessiveness and inclination towards self harm), Natsuki remains relatively stable. She becomes far more cruel in her comments and insults, but even at the group's absolute worst, she desperately pleads with the PC--who she doesnt even trust--to do whatever he can to help Yuri, who at this point has been told Natsuki to off herself to her face. Even when Yuri is at her most hostile and Monika is acting like a psychopath, Natsuki is empathetic enough to know that this isnt who either of them are and that they need help--which displays a staggering amount of maturity from the character who initially seemed the least mature.

Si: Arknights Endfield

Si is effectively an immortal demigod... who happens to be only "well over a century" years old, making her the youngest of her kind by a longshot. the 13th of 12 (dont ask) VERY old siblings, Si is in a very weird place. She's described as a weird mix of a bratty teen and a cranky old lady, which makes a lot of sense in context.

See, Si is too told and too powerful to connect with most normal people, as anyone her mental age will grow out of it almost immediately, and she's already outlived many of her friends. She's also too young to truly relate and connect with other immortals, including her siblings who left her largely to her own devices, leaving her feeling incredibly lonely.

Her Tsundere tendencies come from feeling the need to present herself as a benevolent deific figure, while also having a very, VERY strong need for companionship that is going completely unmet. This combo means she often acts like she's stern and disappointed, demanding others be sufficiently courteous as befitting her station while instantly crumbling the nanosecond she actually upsets anyone she cares about... or suspects she did... or is anxious they might leave.

In terms of the player character, the Endmin, they are the one real connection she has. The Endmin often overexerts themselves, leading to them being in a medical coma for long periods of time, meaning the endmin is the closest in age and lived experience to her. theyre both deified figures who are seen as living legends, while still being people who put their connections with others as a primary motivator.

Well... the last said medical coma left Endmin with amnesia, so theyve completely forgotten Si. Whoops. She's obviously very hurt by this, even if she knows its not really our fault. She still voluntarily helps everyone that asks (and a lot of the time she beats them to the punch) and her little mini arc in 1.6 focuses on her taking the Endmin through a sort of spirit-quest (its complicated) to cure a spiritual wound they suffered. The entire time she is manipulative and dishonest, trying to get the Endmin to abandon their quest.

Her motivation for doing so is twofold. First, this quest poses a genuine threat to her friend's wellbeing (the equivalent of running a diagnostic on them nearly fucking kills the Endmin), but also because... well... we fucking asked her to. This entire quest was Pre-amnesia Endmins idea as both a test of your resolve, and as a chance for you to choose a different path if this wasnt what you wanted.

Si didnt want to put you through this, but does so anyways because both past and present you insist on it.

Even outside of the arc, all of her interactions have her being mildly rude or annoying at worst, and reading between the lines on basically... anything she says to you translates as "You're really important to me; i'm still important to you, right?"

When another character offers his assistance in your quest, she rudely brushes him off despite him approaching with perfect etiquette, writing him off as an "unnecessary nuisance" using even a single synapse will decipher that what she really means is "he's interrupting my time with you."

---

Si's honestly probably my favorite example of a Tsundere because i never once felt like she went too far or was being that way for no reason. She's an awful liar so no matter what she actually says, the player can always see through her like freshly cleaned glass. It keeps her in the territory the game wants her to be in (endearing). obviously everyone measures these things differently but i found her adorable

Characters' Items/Weapons [IRL trope] German Armament Naming Deception

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

If I had a Reichsmark for each historical example of this happening in history, I would have three Reichsmarks. Which certainly isn't much, but it's weird that it happened at least thrice. The Germans seem to have had a thing with weapon names and the circumvention of laws surrounding weaponry. Perhaps they still do. These examples are disputed, but that may make their inclusion even more apt for this subreddit. True or fictional, I enjoy this pattern.

Corrections are welcome.

  1. Kriegsmesser — "War Knife"

If it looks like a sword, swings like a sword, and cuts like a sword, then what is it? A knife, of course. This elegantly curved blade became commonplace amongst mercenaries and other commonborn men of violence in the late medieval HRE. It is its hilt construction that technically makes it not a sword.

The popularity of weapons of this sort is attributed to the demand from non-noble warriors for a weapon that would not violate the prohibition on the civilian use of swords — established symbols of noble rank — whilst filling that same niche.

  1. The Mauser Karabiner

The Treaty of Versailles severely curtailed the military capabilities of the post-WWI German armed forces. Among the restrictions was the prohibition of the use of full-length rifles. The solution? Rename the Mauser rifle. Boom. Meet the Karabiner98b — not technically a carbine, but called one anyway.

  1. The MP44 / STG44

The German leader (yes, that one) during WWII was personally invested in the development of weapons for the war effort. The new intermediate-cartridge, medium-range, full-auto weapon that the Germans cooked up in the latter stages of the war came to revolutionise small arms warfare for decades to come, in no small part because it inspired the development of the now ubiquitous Soviet AK47.

However, this hybrid implement, useful in the roles of machinegun, trench weapon, and carbine, did not neatly fit into any of these categories — and the Big Boss preferred to continue improving on the tried and tested weapon types instead of generalist experiments.

Fearing discontinuation, the engineers then named the project "MP (Machinepistol) 44", marketing it as an improvement on automatic pistol-caliber models such as the MP40. It is said that the Big Boss himself, pleased with the weapon's performance, later proposed the "Sturmgewehr" (assault rifle) designation for it.

Characters' Items/Weapons Guns don't work that way, guys

Any example of firearms being lazily or incorrectly depicted, whether for dramatic effect or simply because the writers didn't bother to check.

Rango (2011): Rango's Single Action Army is depicted with a swing-out cylinder. While extremely common in revolvers nowadays, the SAA used a loading gate, the cylinder was unable to be moved from its position without disassembling the firearm.

Ant-Man (2015): During the mexican stand-off, all of the characters are seen cocking the hammers of their Glock pistols, of which all models have internal hammers.

The Walking Dead S1E1 (2010): Rick tells the new guy to take the safety off his Glock 17, which has no external safety mechanism. Instead, he simply wiggles the slide release.

Grand Theft Auto IV (2008): When reloading the "Carbine Rifle", Niko will yank on an imaginary charging handle and wills 30 new rounds into the magazine with the power of happy thoughts and well wishes. While crouching, he does replace the magazine, however.

Various FPS Games: In many depictions of weapons where the fire selector is visible to the player, more often than not it is set to "Safe", if not completely broken, such as the case of the M16A4 in Modern Warfare 3 (2011).

Works that weren't as scary as people remembered or thought it was from reputation.

Sesame Street: Cracks was thought to be some horrifying cavalcade, but when it was ulpoaded in 2013, it was simply a calm cute short outside of Crackmaster.

About Drssy Sally: When that one guy wrote of his hazy memories of Clockman emerging from the clock, it was thought to be a nightmarish thing along the line of Laika. Nah, it was a cute tale about honesty with not much in the way of actual scares (no more then any of the timw)

Maybe that's the real moral: that what scares you might not be so scary once you see it in person.

2-[One Piece]: Whitebeard stands 6.66 meters tall.

  1. "They keep running" by @ssadev

Recording of family celebrating birthday only to immediately cut to cameraman being in the Backrooms with blood across the floor and the trail leading to the dark hallway, all the while cheerful music plays in the background, before hearing someone's scream and running away Did they all end up in the backrooms and an entity slimed them and the cameraman survived? Who knows. But the fact that you don't see the actual monster makes one shit bricks, and it's also unknown whether a family member screamed or it's the entity like Kane Pixel's bacteria mimicked the voice of its victim

  1. Blair Witch

Too on the nose here but the uncertainty is still here.

Mike leads Heather down the basement to get away from witch before he ends up staring at the corner still, Heather screams in terror seeing the witch (which cannot be seen on cameras or mirrors) in front of her and backs away before she gets instantly knocked out by the entity

Good Times Sloth (Memetic): An image of a sloth doing a thumbs up. Whenever anyone sees it they feel a sudden rush of euphoria and will want to keep looking at it and even praise it. A few hours after seeing the image though, their eyes will start bleeding and they become hyper aggressive, behaving like zombies. They’ll try to have others look at the image. Near the end of the story all the infected pile together into a massive tower of flesh while screaming, which anyone who hears this noise will see the sloth in their head, so not even the blind are safe.

SCP-2774 “Slow Burn Sloth” (SCP Foundation) an image of some sort of person dressed in a sloth suit that appears in many forms of media, usually in the background. It only affects you if it has any hues of red or green. There is a 40% chance of a person that sees it being infected, with the chance growing higher if more people are infected. If someone is infected, after 40-100 of seeing the image they will lose their cognitive function and ability to make decisions, only really acting on muscle memory or simple instructions. Every 24 hours, for 150 they’ll become normal and usually they freak out. Mind you they are still conscious during their infected state but are unable to control their actions or do anything, essentially being in a permanent vegetative state. A person that was infected was asked what it was like during the 150 second window and they described it as “It's like, you're being driven around, and you're in the passenger seat, right? Except, your arms and legs are strapped down so that you can't move. Y-you can't feel anything in your body either. The worst part about it is that you can't hold a thought for more than five seconds. It's fucking hell.”

Alpha (Slotherhouse): I can’t really say much about this movie since I haven’t watched it, but like, Bat themed heroes.

Personality [loved trope] Kind and polite in daily life, complete freak in game

Thumbnail
gallery
2.6k Upvotes

Isagi Yoichi (Blue Lock):
Isagi is a very kind and well-mannered person when he's talking to someone outside of football/soccer. His early interactions with Bachira are so fun and playful. On field, his 'ego' completely absorbs him. This is where you get the "Js pass the ball" and "Two loving parents btw" comments. I love it.

Jabami Yumeko (Kakegurui):
I just recently rewatched Kakegurui and I did not remember how polite and sweet she was. Her interactions outside of gambling and even WHILE gambling she maintains this sweet demeanor. Only when the stakes raise and she experiences true gambling, she truly lets loose.

The reason I love this so much is because it separates the line between daily life and the game. Obviously deviant behavior isn't acceptable in everyday situations, but in game, these are the raw, unadulterated reactions. You really feel how they feel in the moment because of the contrast. If Isagi was perma raging or Yumeko was always like.. that.. it wouldn't really hit the same.

Characters “You thought THIS guy was the main villain? No, the real villain was actually this other guy, and he’s WAY worse!”

Thumbnail
gallery
1.6k Upvotes

Basically the “bait and switch” trope, but with the villain’s identity. The story sets up one person to be the main antagonist, only to reveal that the REAL main antagonist was just biding their time. Maybe they had a plan they wanted to get into motion first, maybe they weren’t involved in the story yet, or maybe they’re just starting to become villainous. A twist villain can also fall into this category, provided that, in their twist, they supplant another lesser villain to become the main threat of the story.

Characters in this trope get bonus points if they beat or kill the previously assumed main villain in a fight.

Examples (SPOILERS BELOW):

Kilmonger from “Black Panther” (2018): the example that inspired this post. Both “Age of Ultron” and the first act of this film set up Ulysses Klaue, the delightfully evil Afrikaner arms dealer played by Andy Serkis, to be the main antagonist. But after evading our heroes, one of his henchmen abruptly kills him, right after revealing his Wakandan heritage. That henchman is Erik “Kilmonger” Stevens, and his evil ambitions far exceed his former boss’s.

Azula from season 2 onward of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” (2006): throughout season 1, the exiled Fire Nation prince Zuko is the most persistent threat to Team Avatar. At the start of season 2, his sister Azula travels to the Earth Kingdom, initially seeming like she wants bring Zuko back into the family. But once her true intentions are revealed, she attacks him, places a bounty on him, and makes his exile seemingly permanent. While Zuko remains in the story and still has moments of antagonism on his path to redemption, Azula becomes a much bigger active threat to Team Avatar than Zuko ever was.

Tetsuo from “Akira” (1988): at first, the main antagonist appears to be Colonel Shikishima. He’s responsible for public order in the corrupt cyberpunk hellscape of Neo-Tokyo, which he maintains with extreme force, and orders the detention of Tetsuo, the best friend of our main protagonist Kaneda. However, Tetsuo was detained for a reason - he starts developing godlike ESP powers, rampages trough the hospital he’s being detained at, confronts Shikishima and the other ESPers, and then leaves to find the remains of Akira, tearing a path of destruction and violence through Neo Tokyo as he goes. Shikishima tries to stop this, throwing everything he as at Tetsuo before eventually being indirectly killed by him.

Tighten from “Megamind” (2010): a rare example of this trope being done with a villain protagonist. After Megamind seemingly kills Metro Man and gets everything he ever wanted, he grows bored and decides to recreate Metro Man so he can have a nemesis again. The person he builds up as this new hero, Hal Stevens Hal Stewart instead acts upon his worst aspects once gaining godlike powers. Donning the name “Tighten,” he demonstrates himself to be far more openly malicious and evil than Megamind ever was, and Megamind completes his heroic turn by stopping Hal.

EDIT: slight mistake: Shikishima doesn’t die. I thought he got killed when Tetso entered his final form, but I just forgot that the ESPers teleport him away. Whoops.

I’ve seen “Akira” tons of times in both English and Japanese. I honestly have no idea how I made this mistake.

EDIT 2: Hal Stewart, not Hal Stevens. God, I need to fix my sleep cycle.

Characters The protagonists have more chemistry with another character than with their primary love interest.

Thumbnail
gallery
6.0k Upvotes

Zuko/Jin - Avatar: The Last Airbender: This was the result of Mai not being very well-liked by a segment of the fandom. Many people adore this character, even though she barely appears on screen. She doesn’t even have an entire episode to herself; her role is limited to a brief segment within an episode that is, in reality, a collection of short stories. However, many people prefer it—perhaps, regrettably—because they feel that Mai was given a rather strange and unpleasant attitude toward Zuko, not only in the series but also in the comics.

Ava Ayala / Peter Parker - Ultimate Spider-Man: This series didn't have romance, but I bring it up because, in the final seasons, there is a strong romantic undertone between Mary Jane and Peter. The problem is... the Mary Jane of this series was an extremely bland character who literally turned into Carnage for some reason I cannot understand. Ava, on the other hand, had a whole episode centered around her—an episode that many consider one of the best in the series. It compared the tragedies of both characters losing the most important person to them and wanting to be better. Additionally, she was the only one of his friends who not only understood his tragedy, but also the one Peter opened up to about what happened with Uncle Ben.

Ester / Ben - Ben 10: Omniverse: They had great chemistry right from their first appearance in Omniverse. Julie only wanted the human side of Ben, while Kai was only interested in his alien side. Ester, being a hybrid herself, cared about both facets of Ben.

Characters (Mixed Trope) Christ-like Figures

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Christ figures are characters that sacrifice for others. Their death’s are usually painful and undeserved, often for the sins of others. There is suppose to be some sort of redemption for the characters or catharsis in the audience, but if authors overuse the trope it can become cliched and heavy-handed.

  1. Ellen Ripley - (Aliens 3) Ripley sacrifices herself when she realizes she has a xenomorph incubating inside her. Her sacrifice is not only to save the lives of others, but to prevent the Weyland-Yutani corporation from acquiring a xenomorph.

  2. Sanguinius (Warhammer 40k) Sanguinius is the Primarch of the Blood Angels chapter of Space Magines. He is a genetic superman created to help in the galactic unification of humanity. He stays loyal to the Emperor when his brother rebels, and Sanguinius forsees his own death at the hands of his brother. It is widely believed that his sacrifice allowed the Emperor to destroy Horus and end the heresy.

  3. Jay Gatsby (The Great Gatsby) Gatsby represented the American Dream, and thus he did not fit in with the social elite, but he also held himself above the common man. He was isolated by his success. His murder was engineered by a rich man who took advantage of a grieving man whose problems were all caused by the wealthy guy manipulating him.

  2. Joker and Akechi, many of us know this one, a phantom thief vs the detective prince, one of those rivalries that tend to be friendly, and yet very self destructive for both.

  3. Batman and Joker, whenever joker dies in batman media, batman feels depressed as if he lost a friend, despite the fact that the one bane of his existence is gone, he feels depressed about it.

  4. Light Yagami and L, a friendship that ends tragically, maybe if they met sooner, they'd be close friends for the rest of their lives, and light wouldnt have picked up that note book.

Tali'Zorah - Mass Effect: She was by far the youngest in Mass Effect 1, and above all, she is a woman of action who was trained for her Pilgrimage. She has a combat drone and prefers using shotguns, which are even said to have high recoil. She also frequently repeats swear words in her own language, like bosh'tet. She is widely recognized as the best engineer the Normandy ever had, and by Mass Effect 2, she becomes its Chief Engineering Officer. And when her friends Shepard or Garrus tease her, she threatens them with her shotgun.

Winry Rockbell - Full Metal Alchemist: Although she lacks alchemical powers and is not part of the military in the series, she is an expert mechanical prosthetic (automail) engineer who possesses impressive physical strength. Due to years of carrying heavy tools, lifting metals, and forging heavy parts, Winry has developed muscles and physical strength well above average. However, unlike Tali, she is not a fighter. She often keeps characters stronger than herself in check, like the Elric brothers, who frequently drive her crazy

  2. The Titan (Deltarune; intentional) - While the trailer didn't exactly make it clear what was going on here, this appears to be a depiction of the reveal of the Sanctuary Titan at the end of Chapter 4.
  3. Literally the title (The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals; intentional) - Realize how the title specifically says "didn't".
  4. The trailer (Abigail; unintentional) - This is a movie that's better to go into blind without the trailer. Why? Because it literally spoils the twist that Abigail is a vampire.

- Behemoth from NIKKE: Goddess of Victory: She is a Heretic whose Dark Matter coating enhances her physical abilities. This liquid is actually made up of nanomachines and during a fight between Behemoth and the Commander's squad the Commander decides to use his special blood because it can interfere with and destroy nanomachines. To do this he comes up with the idea of smearing his blood onto Behemoth by punching her. The punch itself doesn't make a dent but the blood works and causes her great pain while disrupting her Dark Matter to the point where they almost kill her. However later in the arc Behemoth awakens her full Heretic form and the Commander's blood is the main reason behind the transformation. This new form makes her strong enough to start winning against the entire squad in a 1v6.

-The Gremloblin from Gravity Falls: After escaping thanks to Mabel's kindness in leaving it a key so it could leave its cage for a five-minute break, the Gremloblin goes on a rampage. To stop it, Dipper tries to read about its weaknesses in the journal. He reads, "When fighting a Gremloblin, use water..." and Mabel immediately dumps water on it, only for Dipper to finish reading the sentence on the next page: "...only as a last resort, as water will make it much, much scarier." The water causes the Gremloblin to grow bigger and develop spikes, making it even more dangerous.

-Anaconda Virtue from LISA: The Pointless – Scholar of the Wilbur Sin: Anaconda Virtue is a boss who primarily uses fire to attack you, so you might think to use Wet debuffs to extinguish his flames. This actually works, and he simply reignites himself. However, if you extinguish his fire a second time, he gets angry, restores all his health, gains new moves, and can even inflict a permanent debuff. So basically your attempt to exploit his weakness ends up making the fight considerably harder.
