Video Extreme load-bearing test to see how much weight a ring of raw chicken eggs can withstand before crushing

The pound conversion calculator is busted

u/Arowhite Sep 17 '26
For Americans that's enough anyway. Anything under 6' is a dwarf, anything above 200lbs is huge.

u/ManWhoIsDrunk Sep 17 '26
anything above 200lbs is huge
Apt, since the average man from USA weighs 800 quarterpounders.

1 kilogram is 2.2 pounds so it was well over a ton at the end

Not mention it stopped at 200 lbs… which is not 100 kg it showed. So it was wrong to begin with, probably best it broke.
Also, I’m skeptical about the weight anyway, did this guy really go and weigh all that garbage he stacked up?!

What's neat about eggs is that they can withstand a huuuuge amount of pressure top to bottom, but side to side they're weak.
323
u/CollinZero Sep 17 '26
My uncle once proved this to us in a demonstration. He was incredibly strong and grabbed an egg in both his hands. He applied a lot of pressure. His face turned red and his arms started to tremble. As kids we were so impressed. But then his hands must have gotten a bit sweaty and the egg moved… and the egg exploded. We all got splattered but he got the majority. And then he started laughing. It was both ridiculous and impressive.

Yeah but if you put a lightbulb up your bottom it’s going to hurt a lot more than an egg would when it breaks.

Have you tried squashing an egg end ways? I tried with a mate and neither of us could do it. If you have anyone close by get them to give it a go. One palm on the little end, the other on the big end and crush

I can usually gently step onto and place my entire weight onto a carton of a dozen eggs without breaking any. I'm not a light person either.

u/Mohitosan_ Sep 17 '26
Eggs really said “I’m fragile, not weak” 🥚
Explainnn : The shell’s curved shape distributes compression surprisingly well, so when the force is applied evenly, an egg can take an absurd amount of weight. The moment that load becomes uneven, though, it's basically overr

u/Cool_Cartographer_39 Sep 17 '26
Plus the weight is distributed evenly over 18 eggs... sort of like a bed of nails

Also important to mention that the weight distribution only works that efficiently as long as the weight is put on the pointy part of the eggs. The sides aren’t as stable.

When I was 13 or so I wanted to show my mom how strong an egg is by squeezing it in my hand. I tried it in a ziploc bag and was amazed how, with equal pressure, I couldn't crush it. So I excitedly took the egg out of the bag, went into her room where she was on the phone, said, "Wanna see a trick?!" and squeezed that egg so damn hard. Naturally, it cracked and egg went EVERYWHERE. All over her bedspread, all over the walls, all over the two of us... For some reason she wasn't thrilled. We moved out of that house a year or so later and when we took the picture down that was hanging over her headboard there was a like footlong line of egg yolk that had dried onto the wall behind the picture. I'm 34 now. Sometimes when I go to visit her I'll grab an egg from her fridge and go up to her and say, "Wanna see a trick?!"

u/ikats116 Sep 17 '26

So roughly 57kg per egg.

5
u/-Kerosun- Sep 17 '26
Not really. It's just to help make sure the weight is distributed evenly. It doesn't reduce the amount of total pressure the eggs are supporting.

I mean it only works with eggs that are the same size, down to the micrometer. Unlikely.
9
u/Logical_Adagio_7100 Sep 17 '26
no, the initial cushion put on the top and bottom mean that they self adjust a bit into the cushion
honestly no clue if the rest of it is real tho - 1.25 tons feels rediculous for eggs
13
u/sergiotheleone Sep 17 '26
Seriously came in expecting explanations and how perfect distribution causes whatever and some sources.
Nope. Reddit is officially dead. Literally 100 comments saying the same joke about 200lbs = whatever and ALL OF THEM are getting upvoted?!
Who the hell is reading 100 comments, EXACT SAME JOKE, and upvoting ALL of them?? You gotta stop after 4-5 what the actual FUCK is going on!!

40cm×40cm×0.8cm of steel are 1280cm³
Density of steel is about 7.85g/cm³
7.85×1280=10048g or 10.048kg

Pretty sure it's been known for centuries that chicken eggs are pretty much a perfect design to resist pressure applied vertically. Laterally, not so much. However, I'm not able to trust the video on face value.
I'll have a look around..
There's a plethora of similar videos on Youtube. I'm forced to accept that at least some of them may be at least partially true.

- They stop updating it after 200lbs
- They covert as if 1kg = 2lbs, which is wrong
Why did they do this?

The weight is distributed to 19 eggs, so this is how much weight 19 eggs can take. We don't even know if the max load is linear or exponential, so this single test tells us almost nothing. Also, the lbs. counter stopped ticking up after 200.
