I'm pretty sure that there's some softer material surrounding eggs that compresses under pressure

Are the eggs from Vibranium chickens?

Isn’t that cheating?

Not really. It's just to help make sure the weight is distributed evenly. It doesn't reduce the amount of total pressure the eggs are supporting.

Not necessarily cheating but it definitely do need to be explicitly specified. Because it make massive difference at how strong can egg withstand load

Since this is just for entertainment, people don't care. But for any scientific purpose this data is garbage if the soft material is unknown

Interesting!

But it does change the area of the egg that is receiving the pressure which tends to mean brittle items last longer

If that first weight was put on the eggs directly, it wouldn't last long at all because there would be distinct points of contact between the surface imperfections of the egg and the metal plate and also the eggs aren't going to be perfectly matched in height or the angular curve of the bottom/top of them. Using the soft mold gives a better demonstration of the eggs' ability to support evenly distributed pressure. Without it, for example, the tallest egg would be carrying more of the weight than any other egg.

True it shows how strong the shape of the egg is more than the strength of the shell itself. Feels wrong saying that because all of the eggs strength is from the shell 😅.
Also the metal moulding around the egg means that the incompressibility of a liquid takes more of an effect. Even though eggs can have air pockets
