Discussion Anyone else use smart home reminders for cleaning?

I set reminders on my phone to change AC filters and clean dusty areas. It helps me stay on top of things before they get worse. Such a simple trick, but it's actually pretty useful. does anyone else do this?

General Cleaning Cleaning security camera lense

Hi all, we live in a humid area in Australia and have just had a heap of recent rain. My security camera has been foggy for a little while but in the last week or so has gotten worse. Any ideas on how to clean it? It doesn't appear to be condensation. I have tried a magic eraser and a microfibre cloth. I'll attach some pics.

Edit: when the lense is wet, it is clear and when it dries it goes foggy again.

General Cleaning How can I remove tarnish from cutlery / glassware washed in the dishwasher?

Thumbnail

My cutlery (especially spoons) are tarnished after being washed in the dishwasher.

I live in the Netherlands so I have hard water, but I use dishwasher salt. For washing, I use these tablets, with a store-brand rinse aid.

The dishwasher filter gets cleaner every 2-3 weeks. Every couple of months I run a cleaning cycle with a Finish dishwasher cleaner.

I also have some problems with some glasses, which have stains on them even after washing.

The cutlery tarnish can be removed if I just wipe it thoroughly with a cleaning rag, but I don't understand what it is and how it can be stopped.

I put in the cutlery handles-up, could this be the issue?

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

So I washed this pot but when I was boiling water the water became white or had white particles. The side was also white. Now I put my kitchen towel to soak in it (the next time i used it) and after rinsing it out I saw these in the bottom. What might be the reason? Could it be that the pot needs more cleaning?

Furniture Unsure how to save our couch

⚠️Content warning ahead: feces and bodily fluids.⚠️

I’m not sure if this is the best sub for this or if there is a better one. I have been extremely embarrassed about this subject and am unsure of what to do. I am still pretty sick so forgive me if some of this post is a little off as I’m still sleep deprived and wonky.

Tuesday morning around 5am, I woke up on the couch covered in pure liquid, mucous-y diarrhea. I have never been quite so traumatized before. I had been up all night vomiting and diarrhea, usually simultaneously, and was finally able to sleep for about an hour but lost control of my bowels (I still have not much control and have had to start using diapers) and it was all over the couch.

My poor poor husband was the one unfortunately who had to clean it up. He first went in with gloves and cleaned with paper towels and an all purpose cleaner, but then told me he was worried because even though he got the poop out, the smell was still just emanating in the living room. I ended up getting an enzymatic cleaning solution (Biokleen) and he went in with that and doused the couch with it, let it sit and then put a fan near the couch to help it dry. A few hours later, he could still smell it so he drenched it in even more of the Biokleen and used almost the entire bottle.

This horrifically still wasn’t enough. He went and got rubbing alcohol and went in with a cloth and scrubbed the couch down, but this morning he said there is still a faint odor of feces on the couch when he gets his face near the area. We are at our wits end of what to do and I am still too sick to really do much of anything to help. We are worried we may have to get a new couch entirely which we simply cannot afford right now.

Is there anything else we can do at this point to save our couch? Our cushions unfortunately do not come out from the couch so they are attached directly. I really hope there is something else we can do because truly we cannot afford a new couch right now and I have been feeling incredibly awful about all of it and literally would not be able to live with myself if I destroyed our couch because i got sick and couldn’t control my bowels. I’m so upset with myself and I just can’t figure out what to do.

Should we try more Biokleen and just keep dousing it and hope it will eventually get rid of the smell? Do we call a bio-hazard cleaner to help us at this point? i’m sorry if this sounds ridiculous but i’m genuinely just so broken up about this and don’t know what we would do if we had to get rid of our couch.

Thank you for reading and any help is greatly appreciate

General Cleaning Cleaning painted drywall walls?

I'm moving into a new house and the previous owners had children that clearly liked to smear their hands and faces all over the walls. Doesn't appear to be anything like marker, crayon, or other similar messes, just like dark dirty smudges, mostly in the kids' bedrooms and office/play room.

I wouldn't be so concerned if the walls were painted with glossy or semi-gloss paint since I'm pretty positive those can be washed somewhat without much issue, but these walls are light colors with flat or possibly even matte finish builder paint (the house is only 3 years old and I'm confident the previous owners haven't painted after it was built). I'm concerned that spot cleaning may either rub paint off somewhat or just leave really obvious visible areas where they've been cleaned.

Any recommended products or techniques that will be safe enough to use on these kinds of spots and wall finish, or do I just resign myself to dealing with it until I decide to paint those rooms in a couple years?

BONUS: the baseboards/trim are white painted wood, looks like some kind of glossy finish. Any additional tips on cleaning those in a way where future dust doesn't form a relationship with the paint? Definitely had it happen in the past where new home trim was almost sticky with product residue and was super difficult to clean and keep clean.

Flooring Faint smell in wooden floor after a cat stayed 3 weeks. Comes back every time the floor gets wet. Urine? NSFW

Post image
0 Upvotes

A cat stayed in my apartment for 3 weeks, and now there's a faint smell in three spots on my wooden floor (photo attached) that wasn't there before. One spot is near where the food bowl was, and the other two are around the couch.

When the floor is dry, the smell is faint but noticeable, mostly in the morning after the windows have been closed overnight. As soon as I wet the floor a little with water, it gets much stronger.

What I've tried so far:

Washed the floor with soap 3–4 times

Went over it with wet wipes

Sprayed perfume

None of it helped. There are no visible stains. We also used a cat pheromone spray during the stay, so I wasn't sure if that could be the cause.

I've now ordered an enzyme cleaner (Urine Off) and a UV flashlight to find the spots, but haven't used them yet.

My questions:

Does this sound like cat urine, or could it be something else (pheromone spray, food spills)?

Has anyone gotten rid of this kind of smell from a wooden floor with an enzyme cleaner alone? How many rounds did it take?

Any tips for using enzyme cleaner on wood without damaging the finish? The label says to cover old stains with plastic overnight, and I'm worried that's too much moisture for the floor.

At what point would sanding actually be necessary?

Thanks!

Bathroom Drain/Fruit flies in my university room toilet

Hope this is okay to post, I just moved into uni and living by myself is all very new to me. I noticed there was a small fly or two in my bathroom a few days ago and I ignored it as I thought it might have just drifted in from the kitchen. I don’t keep any food anywhere and I try to scrub my bathroom clean. Just walked in today and there’s 7 of them on my toothbrush and theyre scattered across my sink. Are they originating from the sink?? What are they attracted to?? Can I kill them without getting close to them?? And what’s the cheapest and fastest option to eliminate these.

They’re very small and I thought it was fruit flies but I don’t really see why they’re in my toilet so it might be drain flies? I’m not sure if I’m allowed to pour bleach down my accommodation drain but I might if this is the only solution.
I also try to maximise ventilation by having my bathroom door open and then opening my window wide throughout the day, so hopefully it’s not the humidity.

Any help appreciated thank you so much.

Flooring Cat Dander & Smells

I own two very happy kitties, both have very thick coats. I want to do all I can to at least try and remove most of the smells and dander. It's impossible because I have carpet.

I am not dealing with urine or poo smells! Just a lot of hair.

I know enzyme cleaners do a great job when dealing with smells. But are there any other tricks to help with dealing with this, especially because of carpet. I do own a vacuum and a steam cleaner. Which both I use pretty consistently.

I suppose general cleaning tips would help as well because their hair gets everywhere. I live in an apartment. It's pretty small with one bedroom and one bathroom.

General Cleaning Mixed vinegar and mold cleaner on the same wall

I know there's a lot of topics on this out there already. I used vinegar on the wall in my bedroom to remove mold, but it didn't work well, so I decided to use mold cleaner after that. I know it's not a huge deal, I left to ventilate. Should I wash all my bed sheets, since it was near the spots? And should wash my clothes as well, because I read the chlorine gas would fall down.

Discussion How much of your cleaning routine have you automated? Are you happy with it?

I know more and more people are starting to automate parts of their cleaning routine.

So far I’ve only automated the really basic stuff. A robot vacuum for the floors, the dishwasher for the dishes, and an automatic litter box for the cat cleanup.

How much of your cleaning routine have you automated? What tools or routines have worked well for you, and what chores do you prefer doing by hand?

Flooring Does the cleaning dock actually make floor washers less annoying to maintain?

The annoying part of floor cleaning isn't always the cleaning itself. Sometimes it's what you have to do with the machine afterward. That's why a self-cleaning wet dry vacuum makes sense to me, at least in theory. Tineco's FLOOR ONE STATION S9 Scientist Pro has a station that handles clean-water refills, solution dispensing, and brush cleaning. Pretty useful if you don't want another chore after mopping.

But it doesn't magically make the dirty water disappear. You still have to empty that tank, and I'm guessing the station itself needs attention occasionally too. I'd rather know about that part before getting impressed by all the automatic features.

For people who use these station-type floor washers regularly, how much cleaning and maintenance do you actually do yourself? Is it mostly emptying the dirty tank, or are there other parts that need regular attention?
