Kitchen ADVICE NEEDED ASAP!! LEASE ENDS IN 2 DAYS

Post image
24k Upvotes

Hello Cleaners! I’m currently moving out of my apartment and trying to clean up. I had a magnetic white board on my fridge, it’s been there about 2 years. Upon attempting to remove it, the majority of the magnetic material was still stuck to the fridge door! Tried GOOGONE and I can’t even tell if it’s helping. Got about half off slowly chipping away with a credit card/razor and a lot of elbow grease. If anyone has any tips to get this off more efficiently please share!

Update has been posted!! Final Result

Kitchen We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas.

Hi Reddit.

Despite my partner telling me it was a stupid idea, we've had magnets attached to our seldom used chimney hood* for the last few years and discovered they've left marks.

Any thoughts on how to remove the marks and save me from a lifetime of I-told-you-so's?

Forgive the dust below. That I can manage.

*I'm not completely convinced this the right term.

Kitchen How to remove the lettering from this mug?

Post image
10k Upvotes

Not sure if this belongs here specifically... Sorry if it does not. Hoping to find the answer, please.

I found the perfect coffee mug for myself. I had several criteria and it met every one. Perfect size. Good handle. Good wall thickness. Good heat retention.

Problem is... The phrase printed on it. It's just not the kind of person I am.

The letters are slightly raised, but I can't seem to scratch them off. I don't want to damage the glaze beneath the letters.

Any ideas how to remove the words without damaging the mug?

Kitchen Yikes. Knife fell into heating element in dish washer. Need guidance 😭

Post image

Welp. Had the dishwasher running last night and woke up to the smell of melted plastic (yum). I guess a knife fell under somehow. Tried removing it but seems pretty stuck. Was thinking about adding some external heat like a hair dryer or something. Also how does this affect the other dishes that were in the wash at the time?

Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated.

Kitchen Help! My Fridge Died and I didnt know

Post image
4.4k Upvotes

I was gone for 2 mos. In that time, I didn't realize that my fridge died but it did. Now it has become this absolute mess and I don't know how to clean it. Any tips or is it a goner?

EDIT: It died because my roommate unplugged it (IDK WHY) So! It still "works" but that is what it looks like now.

I want to ask the landlord for a new fridge but I also don't know how to do that since technically it's "our fault".😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Kitchen How I deal with cooking oil splatter

Thumbnail

I use the cardboard from two boxes of the Kirkland organic milk as a fry-splatter shield. They stand up on their own and they curve nicely around my pots and pans. It saves me from scrubbing oil splatter on everything in a three foot radius. When they get gross, I toss them and use new ones. Does anyone else do this?? It only works for induction cooktops since there's no heating element/no risk of fire.

Edit: I have a splatter screen, and it works... less than ideally. I have to lift it to stir, and oil still manages to escape through the mesh. I give it a 2/10 for function.

Kitchen Spilled like 30 oz of caramel sauce inside a kitchen cabinet. I cleaned up everything I could but it’s dripping through the crevices now. 😭

I’m a renter so I’m scared to take anything apart I may not be able to put back together. My building has a roach problem (they were already here when I moved in, I keep my place very clean), and I’m not trying to give them anything to munch on. Any advice before I just cut my losses and burn the whole building down?

EDIT: Oh boy howdy I’m overwhelmed by this. I can’t answer all the comments so I’m just gonna give some info/answer questions here.

-First of all, and most importantly, the cat mug is from either TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. My partner and I collect cat mugs and that’s where most of them are from. :)

-Second, the puddle in the picture was already cleaned up by the time I posted this, but I appreciate all the suggestions. I used a wad of paper towels to kinda shovel as much as possible into a plastic cup, then wiped up the rest with paper towels, then used Dawn powerwash and a barely damp scrub daddy to clean up the stickiness. I had to do this in the cabinet, on the counter, down the side of the oven, all the way to the floor. It seems to have worked. Nothing feels sticky anymore.

-I was actually only asking for suggestions on what to do about it dripping from the joints of the cabinet. However, it only dripped maybe five times from two corners, and that was it. There haven’t been any drips in like 20 hours at this point.

-I don’t know what exactly the cabinets are made of, but knowing my landlords/property managers, it’s the cheapest stuff you could possibly buy. So probably particle board. I can’t remove/replace the cabinet because I rent this place. Also because I’m poor lmao.

-I know it was stupid to store the bottle on its side. It was too tall to stand in the cabinet and I don’t have the counter space to leave it out. Lesson learned.

-This post got so many different answers and people disagreeing that I still don’t know what I’m gonna do lol. Since the dripping seems to be done, I’ll probably try to clean in the cracks as much as I can with rubbing alcohol, paper towels, and a bench scraper, then put silicone caulk over the cracks. Pouring water into the cracks would probably be more effective, but I think that would probably ruin the cabinet. Again, very cheap materials, not mine to replace, very poor.

-Pest control comes to my building monthly to spray something for the roaches. They spray inside the cabinets. Thankfully, they’re scheduled to come next week. I’ll tell them what happened and see if they have any suggestions.

-Finally, I think only one person commented this, but it pissed me off enough that I’m responding. I was upstairs in the shower while the bottle was spilling, so by the time I saw it, it had been spilling for 30+ minutes already. The four seconds it took me to take a picture was not going to make or break the state of my cabinet. The damage was long past done, I assure you.

Kitchen PSA: Dishwasher for Everything

2.8k Upvotes

Hey everyone, if you were raised by OCD parents like me, you might need the following permission:

You can put nearly anything you want in the dishwasher and run it as many times as you like: pots & pans, plastic bins & baskets, cutlery organizers, kids toys etc.

Make things easy for yourself. <3

Brought to you by a former OCD perfectionist that is healing thanks to her extremely easygoing husband.

Dishwasher was 6 years old but in good condition. This is what happened after 6 months of daily uses of eco dishwasher sheets. Livid as I thought I was doing the right thing for my family but it just ended up cresting all these slimy stuff that went into the pump and engine and killed it.

Kitchen What do y'all wear on your feet when you're mopping?

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

UPDATED to answer some of the questions. I have severe physical limitation in my arm (I cannot extend my arm out from my body). Inevitably, I step on the wet floor. I do the best I can, and after 3 years of not being able to mop the floor I'm pretty stoked to be able to do it again. It got mopped during those three years, just not by me.

I do dry the floor immediately after mopping! It's not a matter of footprints, but rather a sensory issue with getting my socks or bare feet wet. I follow the floor manufacturers recommendations for cleaning.

_____________ original post This seems like a dumb question especially since I'm wicked old, but I feel like being vulnerable.

If I wear socks, I get my socks wet, which is objectively gross. If I go with bare naked tootsies, it just seems even ookier. I would wear shoes, but that seems ridiculous since I wear my shoes outside.

I'm not coordinated enough to not step in the wet parts, so anybody got any tips?

I really appreciate everyone suggestions about the foot covers. I think that sounds like a grand idea.

Kitchen Hardboiled eggs (shell removed) exploded in microwave — how do I safely clean yolk trapped behind the holes?

Thumbnail
gallery
1.7k Upvotes

Stupid me who didn't know better microwaved an already hard-boiled, peeled egg, and it exploded. I've cleaned the interior, but I can still see small yolk particles behind the holes on the side wall where the lamp is (circled in red in the photo).

What can I do about it? Should I be worried about ants or mold or subsequent uses with these debris behind the holes?

Edit:

For anybody wondered why I did something that should have been common sense to not do it: our family had never had a microwave and only bought one for the first time more than a year ago or so. Even then, we don't use it regularly since we don't usually leave leftovers after a meal or cook anything that needs a microwave. As for me, I know not to put metals and stuff inside a microwave long before that from watching shows and surfing the web. But not about not microwaving eggs 💔. Mom might already know about it but not me!!! 😭

Anyhow, this morning mom boiled 2 eggs before going to work. I woke up later. She texted me to heat up the leftover foods and rice from last night in the fridge. I did as she told me when I went to have lunch. When I removed the shells and noticed the eggs were cold, I thought, why not also heat them up?

And that was how it came to this. It was definitely a learned lesson.

Kitchen What is growing in my coffee machine?

Post image
16k Upvotes

I noticed a lot of mould in my coffee machine drip tray so I opened up the side of the coffee machine And saw this…

It appears as though there are tiny microscopic bugs moving around but they are too small to tell what they are.

I have no idea how to clean this without taking apart the whole coffee machine!

I’ve never seen mould look like this before, does anyone know what this is or how I can clean it?

I just started using Scrub Mommy and it started falling apart a week ago. I had to look back and we’ve been using this for 6-months. Kinda shocked how durable a sponge could be. At this rate the 10-pack I bought is going to last almost 5 years!

Kitchen How to stop maggots from getting in (again)?

Thumbnail

2.4k Upvotes

Our bins are only removed once every two weeks. We found a bunch of little maggots around our kitchen backdoor and floor and after being COMPLETELY grossed out we cleaned the heck out of it.

It rained all day and now I see them crawling up the doors and windows. The little compost bin outside that's overrun with them was thoroughly washed too.

The sneak in under our door. We have a baby.

I'm so grossed out. Throwing boiling water everywhere isn't exactly possible.

What can I do? Salt along the door? Exterminator?

Edit: the cat's name is Rupert, not maggots.

Kitchen 5YO dumped sugar all over our new flat top range

Post image
2.5k Upvotes

Our aunt just had major surgery and my husband and I asked our 14YO to watch the 5YO so we could go visit her together. We were gone two hours, and clearly no supervision occurred.

He dumped out an entire container of sugar and I'm most worried about how it's piled up in the vents of our new stove.

Any advice at all would be appreciated. 😭

It smells like death, rotting food, and farts in this area. It seems to be coming from right in this corner. We’ve removed all food and other items and wiped down every item and surface. But nothing smelled bad, and we still don’t know where the stink is coming from! Any advice?

Kitchen PLEASE HELP ME NOT GET KICKED OUT

Post image
9.8k Upvotes

I am so dumb and irresponsible. I poured my turmeric drink in the sink without rinsing it and I came back to it this morning and our sink is stained yellow. (I know, I know.. I’m sorry and I promise to never do it again!!!)

I have tried Clorox toilet bowl cleaner with bleaching gel, Bar Keepers Friend, and baking soda and vinegar.

I live with the owner of the home and she is in Italy for the next 10 days. How can I fix this before she comes back? I’m desperate and considering a ceramic sink painting kit from Lowe’s.

Please help!!!!
